His program for kids' karate is fantastic in simplicity, accessibility, functionality and martial arts education. The first thing Mr. Wally did was have my son come in for a free class. It was a joy to watch the kids, all happy and focused and really responsive to Mr. Wally's firm but kind instruction. He played games with them, designed to help them learn the strikes, blocks, kicks and focus they need to more further. Even the seemingly "spirited" kids responded SO well to Mr.Wally...it was really amazing. Next, he signed us up for a very inexpensive 2 week trial which included unlimited classes and a FREE uniform! He assured us that by the end of that period we would collectively know if this was going to be an activity our son would enjoy. So far, he absolutely loves it and he's become a calmer, happier, more focused child. He adores Mr. Wally and has made great friends there at the dojo. I couldn't recommend this more to people interested in martial arts. We're signing our teenage son at the end of the month, also.

I was so excited about attending my first class, as my life is so incredibly busy and I was thrilled to think that I had potentially found a wonderful place to relax. My first class was setup by Kerri, who was an employee at American Martial Arts. We had been in contact for months, but my schedule was so busy that I simply didn't have time to connect. When I realized that there was finally an opening in my otherwise hectic schedule, I immediately reached out to Kerri. We were able to schedule a class, and I was beyond excited. On the day of the class, I nervously entered their facility and was immediately impressed by the size. There was a lot of activity all around, but I found what I thought to be the Reception desk and waited while the woman behind the desk finished with a group that was there. I observed a upbeat and friendly conversation amongst them, and waited patiently for them to finish. Once done, I stepped up to a smiling woman who, upon seeing me, suddenly looked surprised, if not shocked. I was a bit thrown off by her sudden change in demeanor, with her smile completely leaving her face and that smile becoming what could best be described as a scowl. The energy in that space and in that moment became negative and unbalanced, in a way that was uncomfortable. What came next should not have surprised me as the woman's facial expressions were absolutely leading up to it. The now "smile-less" woman looked at me and said "do you need something"? No hello, no niceties, just "do you need something"? I barely knew how to respond, but one thing was abundantly clear, this wasn't a place where I was welcome and I felt an overwhelming need to leave immediately. I attempted to respond with a full sentence, but I was too taken aback to even think, I asked the woman if she could please let Kerri know that I had stopped by, as I had absolutely no intention of spending even another minute there. I then began to leave, but of course this exchange would not be complete without the requisite sarcasm that is to be expected from someone who greets a potential customer in such a manner. No surprise here. When I went home and told my husband what happened, he calmly and quietly explained that I did the right thing by leaving immediately. He said "babe, that wasn't a place for you, and that woman at the front desk was making sure you understood that you were not welcome.". Of course I understood exactly what he meant, but it still saddens me to my very core that people of color are not always welcome. I never, ever, ever pull the race card, but something went very wrong at this place of business, and that woman seeing my face in person ignited it. There was no hiding her contempt and obvious disdain for me, she didn't even try, and I am guessing that she behaves this way because someone has set the tone for that behavior within this place of business.

They work very hard to teach the kids respect, discipline and technique while helping build their self esteem. Previously both of my children had taken karate classes at the YMCA and while they enjoyed it, didn't learn very much. The children's classes are taught Sensei Candace, Coach Robin and Coach Victor, Candace's son Sensei Jacob, as well as a few others but I don't remember all the names. Classes are Co-Ed and ages range from 3-13. Typically younger, smaller children are paired up for grappling. Kids classes are held Monday's and Wednesday's 5:00-6:00 and Saturdays 10:00-11:00 am. My younger and older son participates in this class but my older one participates in the adult class as well. The adult classes are held Mon and Wed 6:15-8:15, Thurs 6:00-8:00, Friday 7:00-9:00pm and Saturday 11:30-1:00pm. Women's only self defense classes, anti-bullying classes, and stress management seminars are offered as well. Coach Robin is a licensed massage therapist and offers shiatsu massage, deep tissue, Thai, reflexology and Swedish massage. Sensei Candace is also a Reiki Master and does sessions by appointment only. She has really great positive energy. They also offer children's birthday parties. Prices are very reasonable and you can attend as many classes as you would like. My oldest sometimes goes as much as 5 times a week. He has grown very much in only a year here and is currently preparing to compete in the Naga Tournament in May.

Sensei Candace is one of the kindest people I've ever met. The patience she demonstrates with these kids is amazing. Her calm energy seems to keep them focused and on track. She has a way that makes them want to make her proud of them. She's everyone's ninja mother, lol. Both my kids take classes here. My oldest takes adult and kid classes. They work on strength training, grappling and moves. At first I wasn't sure he was ready for the adult class but Sensei Candace reassured me that he would do great. He has a background in wrestling and is able to use his grappling skills acquired from that. He's learned a lot from the adults and has a lot of respect for them. He struggles with ADHD and this has really helped him with self control and focus. Her prices are extremely reasonable considering how many people she has on staff and how frequently you can attend classes. It's a great jiu jitsu school for adults and children.
