It was built by Harvard University in 1940 and given to the city. In 2004 it was restored by the University to make the area more welcoming to families. Though considerably dwarfed by it's more popular cousin, the Commonwealth Mall, it is still a lovely place to pass through on one's way to Main Street, the Navy Yard, or Bunker Hill. Walled and entirely paved in red brick (some of the bricks have been dislodged, so take caution), it is perhaps not be the most ideal place for a picnic (I would head over to nearby City Square for that). Still I find it to be a very peaceful spot. There are several benches for sitting and there are also some lovely trees which provide ample shade in the summer months. In the evening the area is enchantingly lit by Charlestown's ubiquitous gas lamps. On the top level of the mall there is a playground complete with a swing-set and drinking fountain which appears to be a lot less hectic than the one located on Union and Rutherford, though not quite as well equipped. It's a beautiful place during any season and it has a certain draw to it. I often find myself going a little out of my way to pass through it while running errands. If you're in the area you may feel compelled to do the same.

What a great playground! The only reason that I give it four stars instead of five is because the…read morerubber surface squares that cover the entirety of the playground are coming apart, leaving gaps that kids can trip on. However, this is a perfect playground for all ages, from age 2 on up. There are four different sections: a wooden play set for older kids, a toddler section, another wooden play set for toddlers and older kids, and a climbing structure off to the side for older kids. The wooden playground equipment in the middle is perfect for playing chase, because there are lots of bridges to run on and spaces to hide under. Climbers will love all of the things to climb on, including a wall with a rope to help you scale. There are slides galore, bridges, monkey bars, fireman poles, ropes, tunnels and steps. The only thing: There are no swings here! But there are so many other things to do that you don't even miss them. One of the best things about the playground in this park is the view. You can see the Charles River from this playground, as well as all of the beautiful buildings and bridges around Boston.

It's fenced in, which is a plus. There is no parking, which is a minus. But it's walkable from the green line. Stroll over to the nearby Lee Memorial Wading pool to make a whole day of it with your little ones. ETA: there actually is parking, over by the wading pool, but you have to put your life at risk by slowing down enough on Storrow drive to turn into it. Then you have to try to get back on... obviously this outrages everyone else on Storrow to the point of lewd gestures and angry horns, since they're so busy with their important lives.

The park is HUGE, When you first walk in (I came in from the far end side behind the Baseball Diamonds - where you wouldnt even know it was a park if someone didnt tell you)... There are possibly 4 Baseball Diamonds... Huge Full length basket ball courts & then if you walk down behind the school there are 2 playgrounds... One playground is tiny & probably meant for littler children and it would have been great for my son except it was packed and there are no benches which is awkward... So I noticed another little playground up the ramp so I went up there & that one is bigger in size, but it wasnt really that advanced where I wouldnt let my 2 yo explore... and there were TONS of benches... So we are sitting & playing & when all of a sudden the School Doors open up & about 300 kids run out, It was pandemonium... The school houses Summer Camp & kids were everywhere, My son went nuts, he loves running crazy kids... As fast as they were all there they were gone, they went up to all the baseball/basketball fields.... So after a good hour of playing & running up & down slides, we went to watch all the kids play kickball (which made me realize camp counsellors are rude & have no patience with little kids - but thats a whole other story)... The park is HUGE & from what Im told they have all the city Little League games there... I would def recommend for a morning out! Just drive around and park on the street side, the way I entered was scary & there are LOTS or trucks delivering to the businesses there!

This is especially dangerous for someone who hopes to walk safely with a dog reactive dog on a leash in this general area. Additionally, like any neighborhood dog park, there seems to be a community of people who frequent this one regularly, at least before work hours. One, with a larger breed dog, was completely indifferent when his dog escalated playtime with my dog and tried to bite him, definitely scaring him. Given that I have encountered dogs that are not necessarily well behaved coupled with the fact that this area is often full of awful leash dogs running where they should not be (recently, I had been going there again because there is a fence limiting pedestrian traffic on the fields, possibly due to some landscaping work). I could not report this incident animal control because my dog was not bitten/had his skin broken, but the rude face the other owner made to me and his dismissive nature of my concern was alarming. There are absolutely some dog parks people go to to just ignore their dogs when they have too much energy, and unfortunately this, like the one on Putnam Street, is becoming that.

Across from the kiddie playground, there is a second playground for older kids (simple obstacle course kind). When you look across the field, you will find a fantastic play area with long slides and ninja type obstacle course. I want to be a kid again! I think I saw about 20 parking spaces? I also saw a mini splash pad/water area but it was not turned on when I was there. Basketball court is available too.
