I grabbed a spot at a very small bar and ordered a new IPA and 10 inch pepperoni and pineapple pizza. The bartender/server was very friendly and knowledgeable of the local beer scene. Cool place that's a surprise to find in Decatur. It's not the expected little pizza parlor, but a cool bar and restaurant. Donnie's has some hip vibes going on, with cool old music and fun employees. For sure it's like nothing else around here. There's also lots of plant based options. A very different pizza place than we thought it would be. I assumed this was just going to be like a dumpy place and you order at a counter. This turned out to be a place with a full bar, and has a lot more going on. Basically it has a kind of classic hard rock theme with cool artwork. The food rocked too. It has more than just pizza. There's also plenty of appetizers and salads. We got an appetizer to share. It was the Vegan Antipasto. It's about $9 for a bowl full of good stuff. There was hummus along with giardiniera, olives, onions, pitas, spinach, and tomatoes. For the pizza, they have vegan topping choices. They happened to be out of these. Has lots of interesting things to try here. It's certainly the most unique restaurant in town. This is one of me and my son's favorite places to eat. It is not only the food but the people that work there that truly make it special. They make a great crust by itself and you can customize your pizza with so many toppings. Get in there on the weekend for the donuts or muffins. Tell them OZZFestAmy sent you. In town for the weekend and wanted to find a local place to dine with the family. It was a little awkward but it was a good experience. The person who served us at first forgot about us for a little while after bringing drinks but eventually another waiter came around and got our order. The pizza was good but wasn't cooked all the way through and was really doughy. I personally ate a bite of the pizza and then ate the cheese and toppings because I was afraid of food poisoning. The pizza is great but the Mac's donuts they sell in the morning are horrible! The raised yeast donuts are chewy and have a bad oily after-taste that lingers, and the cost of the donuts is an insult to customers... $13.00 for 6 donuts and $23.00 for a dozen!! I do not know where to start.... So MANY things happened and went wrong that it isn't worth my time to write ALL of them down in this review. New ownership isn't working and it shows. I feel for the previous owner who built this business up in Decatur to watch it go awry. SO SAD! We will never return. We were there for 30 minutes and never received our drinks. The server split them all over my son then moved us to another table and never returned. The drinks that didn't spill sat on our previous table until we walked out. It was not only my family that was disappointed, other tables walked out with us! One lady looked at me and said we are getting ours to go to get out of here. And the biggest disappointment of all was watching the 2 men behind the counter sit there and laugh, talk to one another, and DID NOT help/assist the servers with ANYTHING! Ordered delivery through grub hub on a Saturday. Delivery went smooth. One of our pizzas was the complete wrong pizza. They said to call back tomorrow since they had no more pizza cheese. I live in Indy, but my daughter goes to Millikin (FROSH) so I will be in Decatur several times a year. I'm giving this Pizza 5 stars as it represents probably the best deep-dish crust I've ever had. Think Gino's East of Chicago deep dish but with bread that looks and tastes like a heavy loaf of French bread. IMHO, the only way you can eat their pizza upon delivery to your table is with a knife and fork. It's just too hot. I'm a Pizza purest but it's impossible to use your hand unless you sit there and wait for 5 minutes. And that would be even more impossible. It was perfectly cooked and I was very disappointed to find out that my wife gave our leftovers to my daughter and her roommate. I mean, they have plenty of food, they can walk to a buffet a practically any time. Virtually every dorm room has a mini fridge. They don't need this pizza in their life like I do. I knew I would be craving leftover pizza at the tail end of our 3-hour drive home and sure enough I was! Pizza flavored combos ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE! The restaurant itself is a bit dicey, but their restrooms were in surprisingly good shape. So it is a charming kind of dive. They support local artists be selling their creations on the wall, but trust me, they'll be there for a while. They also have a jukebox you can control with an iPhone app, which is great because they play the music loud so it's hopping, but not so much that you can't hear anything. Donnie's is about as good as it gets in terms of value and creativity for a Decatur restaurant. If this were review site that measured only Decatur establishments, it would have to receive a 5 just to set the theoretical upper limits of the curve. Donnie's is the only place in town to get a few craft beers on tap, and they have a small cooler with a decent selection of craft beer in bottles as well. Its selection is dwarfed by anywhere in say, downtown Champaign, but it's a lifesaver as far as Decatur is concerned. The sandwiches and calzones are fantastic. I especially enjoy the Fat Philly. On a weird note, the same menu item can look totally different on different days, depending on who is in the kitchen, but they are uniformly tasty. They also have one of the wider selections of veggie and vegan-friendly food in town. A sandwich with chips or a calzone will cost you around $8--more expensive than a sub shop, but of markedly higher quality. The calzones come two at a time, and I find that one is plenty for lunch, so it actually becomes two meals, which makes the value higher. The inside is very attractive and decorated with a lot of local art. It is the only establishment in Decatur that has the feel of a liberal college coffeeshop. The owner is a friendly hippie who would enjoy talking with you. Donnie's has also quickly become the best place in town for non-mainstream music. They allow anything (literally, anything) to play on stage, and it's all to their credit. In general, there's a lot to like about the place. It's something Decatur desperately needs. EDIT: Yelp asks if Donnie's is "good for groups." I don't want to put "no," but they don't have a ton of room and can't fit a very large group at any one table, except maybe outside. read more

My favorite go-to spot in Decatur. The food is consistently fabulous and the only reason I elected to drop the fifth star is the inconsistent service. I've never experienced anything but very friendly staff, but at times it doesn't compensate for the lack of experience. Most of the waitresses are very young and really don't know how to wait tables. With that being said, I have eaten every veggie-friendly and fish item on the menu and every one of them is great. I especially recommend the tilapia-dill pita wrap, the vegan sweet potato pita wrap, and the grilled cheese on jalapeno cornbread. All sandwiches are served with organic blue corn chips and their delicious house-made hummus. Hands-down best beer selection you will find in Decatur. They carry a nice variety of local brews and some downright delicious craft beers. Great atmosphere, excellent outdoor seating area, and they frequently host live music as well as an open mic night on Wednesdays. Good pizza, incompetent service. I went there a few days ago while visiting my family. It was winter break for the nearby university, so I think they assumed they wouldn't get busy. Because of this, the management assigned their most incompetent staff for the evening. When they got "slammed" (maybe 80% full, but that's the term I heard staff members use), everything fell apart. We waited ten minutes to get any kind of service (though my stepfather spoke to a server upon walking into the restaurant). This consisted of dropping menus on our table. Fifteen minutes after that, my stepfather went to the bar to place our order, as our server was nowhere to be seen. Our drinks were delivered, so we assumed our pizza order was also delivered to the kitchen (big mistake!). We waited...and waited...and waited. A large family came in. They had reservations. The staff failed to reserve tables for them. The family was forced to leave and find another restaurant that could seat them even though Donnie's took their reservation in good faith. Almost an hour into our adventure, I went up to the bar to inquire about our order. Everyone behind the counter pointed fingers at each other as to who was responsible for our order. One server (who had been called in because they had been "slammed") offered to take responsibility for our table. She checked the kitchen and informed us that our pizza would be ready in five minutes. Fifteen minutes after that, I approached the counter again. I asked (more loudly this time) what was going on with our order. The same server offered to check. She came back to our table and told us it would be about ten minutes. Obviously, we found this answer pretty unacceptable. A manager-type (who had also been called in when the place was "slammed") came to our table and explained that the wait was normal, as deep-dish pizzas take 30-35 minutes. WE HAD ORDERED THIN CRUST. Our server returned soon. She offered to comp our entire meal. They had completely lost our order and lied to us about it for over an hour. At this point my mother's blood sugar was plummeting. The server asked us to stay and said that we would receive no bill for the meal if we stayed. We agreed. Fifteen minutes after that (about an hour and 45 minutes after we arrived), the pizza arrived. It was pretty good. We received no bill, and I tipped the competent server who brought it to us. This place is capable of serving good food, but you'd better be sure you have the time to gamble. If they place gets anywhere close to capacity it would seem that any ability it has to serve customers completely crumbles. If it had service I could trust I would be happy to go back. They were out of beer cheese, so we ordered nachos that were served burnt. Beer and soda were flat. No attempt made by staff to acknowledge these discrepancies and adjust price for them. Donnies is extremely deee-licious pizza. Definitely one of the best pizzas...especially for a very central Midwestern town. After moving to Champaign, Donnies is on my list of places that I miss about Decatur. Not to be directly compared to New York Pizza but definitely can register in at a very strong 2nd; the only issue that Donnies really has is...non-consistency. Great pizza! I love to order the "Dank Veggie" because it is covered in lots of delicious vegetables. The crust and sauce are very tasty. I ordered the grilled cheese on jalapeno cornbread once, and it was also good, though the bread wasn't what I expected when I read "cornbread." The sandwiches are served with chips and hummus.
