Donostia has been on the London restaurant scene for a while, but it wasn't until the opening of its new sister restaurant Lurra and my recent trip to San Sebastian that it came across my radar. I don't know what expectations I had, but the restaurant is surprisingly small and cozy, and the menu is also very slimmed down compared to what I am used to. We were a party of 4, and we ordered pretty much everything that caught our eye. To start, we got bread and olive oil, and while they charge extra for a refill, the olive oil is top notch. It doesn't come with vinegar, apparently. We then got the crispy creamy croquettas with jamon, which were amazing. I would have those over and over again; they are definitely not kidding about the creamy! We also got the Salchichon Iberico, which was actually salami rather than the Iberico ham I expected. They gave us about 20 slices. Cheese wasn't on the starter side of the menu, so we turned over the page and ordered it off the dessert side, because in our minds cheese and hams were definitely always made to go together. It was nice that it came as a platter with 4-5 different types, and it would have been nice to get a selection of hams as a platter too, rather than 20 pieces of the same thing. We also got the octopus, and there were a lot of pieces (like 12ish), but it is not nearly as nice as octopus when served warm. I would give that a miss. For tapas, we got the scallops, two orders of lamb chops, and Padron peppers. I thought these were all fantastic. It was a bit funny when our plate of Padron peppers contained nearly all green peppers save one orange one. I'd never seen an orange one before! I would happily have all the tapas plates again. But having tried nearly everything that appealed to us on the short menu, I'd probably be inclined to give Lurra a try for next time. read more
