I loved the cold roast beef sandwich.. the philly was not as good ...seemed to be missing onions and mushrooms which are in the description. it was a bit boring just meat and provolone cheese basically. didn't like that the only bathroom is behind the counter ... had a long drive but didn't want to bother people working there so did not use it but should have ... the inside reminds me of a cafeteria in Texas. unique and cool. loved the soft sourdough roll. can't wait to get the cold roast beef again one day . read more

Dons is an old school sandwich shop. You can tell it's been there a long time. I had the French dip (my go to) with green chile, pepper jack, and horseradish. Side of potato salad, and a Dr pepper. Great sandwich, nice soft bread, everything tasted fresh, and plenty of it. I could have ordered a half and been plenty. The ladies making the food were so pleasant and welcoming. The fam and I were feeling up to having sandwiches for lunch and being new to Redding, I wasn't sure what was around so I did a quick google search and noticed Don's sandwich shop and deli and am I glad I looked it up!! I ordered four sandwiches, the Addi aka the Reuben, fried pastrami with turkey, turkey sandwich with sourdough and avocado and the Cali was the last sandwich. I can tell you that the Reuben I ordered was fantastic. It was very flavorful and savory. They slow cook the meat in the crockpot for the Reuben. We also ordered some potato and macaroni salad to try. I'm extremely impressed with their food and the homey vibe this place produces. There's definitely a level of love in their food. Philly was so big we took 1/2 of it to go. Both our meats were juicy and everything fresh. My whole wheat bread was so n the soft so might get soggy if you saved for later. So we left San Francisco Deli because they did not have light rye or corned beef for our sandwiches. Don's did not have light rye either so I opted for the sour dough bread (which is a kosher no no) and I was sorry I settled. The Ruban came on marbled "rye", which is more pumpernickel than rye, but the corned beef was good. My pastrami was not soft and was quite fatty and the sour dough was a bad decision I will never make again. I also had the potato salad which was edible, but nondescript. So yet another place to add to the list of no return. I'm from LA where Canters, The Hat and Langers are the industry standard for delicatessen fare and it seems that there are too many "delis" that are unaware of this. Sad. read more

Finally got the chance to stop by Don's Deli whose been feeding me for years lol. Etched in Elegance has been catering our luncheons, celebrations, retirements and other events for years. I travel to Redding for these events but could never wrap my day before the deli closes for the day. I vowed as soon as I got the opportunity, I'd go meet the people behind the magic, besides the beloved Robin Lentz whom I adore so much (she's beyond special y'all, just a one-of-a-kind, amazing person). So yesterday was the big day! I arrived at the deli, excited to personally thank the staff for years of amazing food (I always get a kick out of the ooohs and ahhhs and people trying to guess what's in the salad, the desserts, etc.). I walk in the deli and stop at the door, taking it all in. Don's reminds me of the kind of deli that's clearly loved by the community (there was non-stop foot traffic from the time I arrived and when I left several cars were pulling in), the gem of the town, with pictures of family, funny, nostalgic, inspirational messages on the wood paneled walls. I felt like I was five years old again, on a cross country road trip with my parents as we stopped for lunch. To my added delight, Robin was at the deli and not away catering an event. I immediately began thanking the staff for the amazing food they always prepare and while smiling and saying thank you, you could see the "Who is this lady (lol)" look on their faces. Robin pipes in an tells them who I am and who I work for and they all responded when I collective, "Oh hi!" Lol I stayed more time than I allotted (needed to arrive back home by a certain time), talking with the staff and having a rough time deciding on what I wanted for lunch. I opted for a chef salad with desert (life is all about balance, right?!). The salad was huge, I'll have the rest today lol and the desserts were house-made as I've come to appreciate over the years. The desserts managed to make it home (lol) for my husband and I to share. The apple pie was flaky, rich and sweet (apples weren't tart...thank you!). The butterfinger blonde tasted like gramma's peanut butter cookies on steroids. So glad I finally got to experience Don's in real time! Can't wait for my travel schedule to allow me to stop by and say hello to my friends again and try something else on the menu. We go to a lot of the local Sandwich locations. Redding has a lot of good Hamburger and Sandwich shops. I finally tried Don's and was very impressed. I like to order the same thing for lunch that way I can have an honest assessment of the food. FYI they are heads and shoulders above the rest. The best caterer EVER!- Etched in Elegance. Robin and Becky did the Rehearsal Dinner, Brunch and Wedding meal for my daughter's large wedding last weekend. The venue was a remote location with lots of challenges. They were so flexible, creative and easy to work with! The food was fantastic! They easily worked with our dietary restrictions and fun, quirky preferences of the bride and groom. It was 110 degrees and everything was outside. They kept the food safe as well as appetizing . The staff was awesome and even in the extreme heat were professional and pitched to help when we had logistical issues. Robin and Becky were my saving grace as I planned this remotely from Fairfield.
