first time in had major repair done on my toro zero turn got home and ran it a few times and it started to back fire when I turned it off and had a very rough idle he had his driver pick it up called me 2 weeks later and asked if I could come in he said he needed to replace valve cover gasket showed me a bad one but I new I had used one of the caulk ones from a tube (but still charged me an extra 200.00 dollars to replace paid him cash and put a 100 dollar bill back in my pocket dropping it to the ground (on purpose ) walked out to my truck and then right back in he denied that they found it on the ground I ended up spending a little more than 14 hundred dollars and then he didn't even feel bad about taking a 100 dollars more from me no wonder he has no commercial business and should have residential customers either read more

Needed some parts for my Snapper snowblower. Don's is only 5 minutes away and we bought the snowblower there so I drove up. They had them in stock and were pretty confident i could put them in myself. Got home and went to work. Bad news was that there were no instructions with the parts. Good news was that things seemed self explanatory. Only issue was resolved with a quick trip back to the shop to get a visual helpful hint . All in all everything went just fine. today I had the pleasure of dealing with Dons small engine repair. Took my 40 year old Honda hs35 snowthrower in for an opinion. Jeff said-sure we can repair it. Had previously went to wayne lawn and garden on mi. ave .Paid $50 for an evaluation . They said it could not be repaired due to no compression. $50 was gone ! Don's did the repair in 2 days. Runs better than new and I bought it from Saxtons in 1979. These guys are so honest at Don's. How refreshing to deal with honest people in this day when you have to be careful. I had the occasion to go back to yesterday to have some repairs done to my weed whip and Jeff was right there opening up some new equipment. They're a small shop at the SW corner of Ann Arbor Trail and Lillie in Plymouth Michigan. But don't let that smallness fool you.They are a well-equipped, very professional and extremely personable business. I dropped off a mower to replace a broken drive cable. The shop took 3.5 weeks (vs a 2 week estimate) to tell me that I needed a new transmission for $250, or I could leave the mower there (for scrap?) and buy a $750 mower with the same features. This "information" cost me a $30 diagnostic fee (non-refundable). As I could see for myself that the cable was broken, I took it home and repaired it myself (new cable = $30). I have been using it since with no issue. I informed the business about the above via email and requested a refund of the diagnositc fee, but recieved no response. I also opened up a complaint with the BBB. Obviously, I would never use this business again, I can't say strongly enough that no one else should either. read more

I bought a weed whipper here around 2011 and it has run excellent. I recently had a leak in the fuel tank. I brought it in and he fix the connectors to the fuel tank in one minute and refused to charge me anything. They filled The whole tank with gas to test the leak, and still wouldn't take anything from me. If I could give him -4 stars I would, because outright dishonesty can't be rated in the positive. I dropped off my snowblower to fix a small leak as the machine ran fine. They told me it was something simple but I would have to pay $34 just to have it checked and it would go towards the total bill if it was bigger. ok fine. Some time later they called me with the news they had replaced a Bowl gasket ($2) a float bowl ($3) and a spark plug ($3) but it took them "an hour" so $70 (??) when I came in I verified the parts and objected to the price. It took me 5 seconds to unscrew the bowl and gasket when at home, and the spark plug takes 2-3 minutes, 5 minutes if you are lazy. How in the world did they justify an hour ?? I also asked why are you charging as much as a car mechanic to fix 100 year old simple technology, my snow blower is not fuel injected, or turbo charged, nor do their mechanics have to be yearly certified to keep up with technology as it is in cars (hence their higher hourly rate). No real response. The hourly rate is my fault, I should have asked before hand, he is free to charge a million if he wants to, if we are stupid enough to pay it. But the DISHONESTY and outright lying how long it took to replace a part I did myself in seconds before hand is simple an basic "thievery". I can't believe this guy goes to church. What a miserable, lying bastard. I will definitely NEVER come back to this place. Shameful, no morals. Family owned and operated shop, very experienced and knowledgeable owner and staff. Fair prices and reasonable lead time just do yourself a favor and don't bring in your snowblower 24 hours before the first snowfall of the year (or your lawn mower in the spring when your grass is already 6" high). Like all other shops they get bombarded with a bunch of last-minute customers and it takes a while to catch up. So, just do yourself a favor and anticipate your needs. Oh, and drain or preserve your gas at the end of every season! I know this is a good shop and I worked there during a very heavy spring season. I already had an old lawn mower, but it was awkward to use, difficult to start and mangled the grass as much as cut it, so I went to Don's in search of a lawn mower to get me through the 2015 season. He sold me an old one for $100; got it ready to go within 20 minutes. It always starts first pull, runs perfectly and cuts clean. It's the best lawn mower I've ever had. read more

Dropped off a power washer with a bad pump. Engine ran fine but no water pressure. When I dropped it off they gave me a 2 week wait time for service, which was reasonable given the season. I heard nothing at 2 weeks and waited until 3 weeks to check on the status. At that time, they told me that it was "near the top of the list" and I would hear back within a few days. So.... I waited another week and again heard nothing. When I called back after a week, they said they hadn't looked at it yet but they would definitely give me a call back tomorrow. So... I waited 3 more days again and then, having heard nothing after the (3rd) inaccurate time estimate, went to pick up the pump. When I got there they said the pump was not serviceable and needed to be replaced, which we already knew when I dropped it off. After askin to just take the pump back, I requested a refund of the $30 fee, which they refused, saying "we don't work for free".... After having done nothing at all for 4.5 weeks! read more

Very poor customer service! I called ahead before driving 20 to see if they had two parts for my weed eater. the person I spoke to said yes, they have it. when I got to the place, not only did the woman at the counter seem pre-occupied and definitely not courteous, she seemed irritated that I was asking her to find the parts that they had said was in stock. After checking, the young man from the back told me he had to order the part!!!!! I could have ordered the part online, which is what I eventually had to do. read more

I dropped off a small gasoline-engine implement that failed to start. I was told it would be 2 weeks because they were quite busy, which was understandable. After three weeks I called them back to make sure they had not lost my contact information as I had not heard anything. I was told it was near the "top of the pile." It was indeed done shortly after. The problem turned out to be a carburetor that needed cleaning due to bad/old gas. What I'm about to state is totally subjective, however the manner in which this news was delivered to me felt a bit belittling - as if them having work to do/my patronage was something of an inconvenience. As I know very little about engines, I would have preferred a "this is what you can do next time" tone instead of "this is what you did wrong." All this aside, I will likely use them again as the work was done well. read more
