First is that they are based in Richardson and did not require a trip to the design district for many of those resources. Second is the fact that both of the principals are very involved in the community. Serving as an Arts commissioner with Curtis Dorian and getting to know him made a big difference in developing our design working relationship. As a former decorative buyer for Neiman Marcus, our home is filled with items of the past and has a settled, drowsy air of unhurried occupation. We like to take things slowly and let the smaller touches evolve. For example, we needed sensitive suggestions for the recovering of our 14 dining chairs in three differing styles. As doyens of textiles, Dorian-Bahr delivered exactly what we needed. There is a curious alchemy of putting together rooms and we both felt that the design firm understood what we were about and that our relationship would continue. Dorian Bahr did an absolutely outstanding job of designing my mid century modern kitchen. I'm a graphic designer by trade - and I even came to them with 'ideas'. Curtis and Michael were extremely kind in entertaining my suggestions, but came up with concepts, thoughts and looks that I never would have dreamed of. Lesson learned to just let the guys do their jobs. From surface textures to colors, lighting fixtures to cabinet hardware, everything is really super retro cool. The kitchen also functions as an art gallery for artwork I've been collecting over the years with creative shelving mixed in to really give the kitchen a 'wow' look. The finished kitchen never fails to start a conversation - it's eye-popping, different - and it just feels like home (yet like I'm living in a magazine). I was referred to Dorian Bahr by my former client to get my kitchen remodeled. He sent over some of their past work for me to review. The photos were just simply stunning. I had to have them for my dream kitchen. I didn't even bother to get bids from other GC's. I didn't know a single thing about the reno process going into my first project. When I found DB, we had just bought our first home - a 1920's fixer upper in desperate need of some TLC. Finding the right GC for the job was difficult; I watch too much HGTV.... Needless to say, I felt a certain sense of relief after my consultation and walkthrough with their rep. I knew I had found the GC of my dreams. We went to there show room to make sure we made the right choice. Michael showed us some amazing backsplash ideas in his showroom for our kitchen that we had not seen any where else. He had such a beautiful variety of choices that you don't find in other showrooms. With Michael's expert design abilities, he helped us pick the perfect backsplash that matched beautifully in our style home. We love it so much more than the plain backsplash we almost chose. I am currently a student from Berkner High School and I had the opportunity to intern at an architecture, interior design, engineering and a design-build firm. During my internship at Dorian Bahr Company, I learned what it will take to become an architect. During my stay of four months, I learned how to use various websites in order to produce plans for renovations and new builds.
