I've stayed at this hotel once, but I've frequented their bar and spa quite a few times. The room…read moreis excellent, lovely furnished with a great flatscreen lcd on the wall; although, I did have trouble with their shoddy remote control. The bathroom was sweet with a lovely shower; but, I did miss having body lotion. Frankly, with an amazing Spa in the hotel, I think more luxury products would be given to entice guests to the Spa. This hotel would get FIVE STARS if not for a few mistakes, that can only be chalked up to mediocre hotel management, excluding their elevator that makes a horrible noise as if it's going to detach and plunge me to my death (please fix that). First of all, there is no access to ice machines, or ice bucket in your room. You must visit the bar for both. You could probably call it up, but that is always a hassle. People at the bar seem like they're forced to be nice to you, but if could have been a bad day. I'd stay at this hotel again and again. I highly recommend it, if not for the tiny fixes to make it a FIVE STAR. The towel warming rack in the bathroom is a nice touch. Please fix the elevator. Lastly, the worst trait of this hotel is the waiter staff during breakfast in the restaurant. My girlfriend and I waited so long for our coffee, tea, and toast that it had to be reordered. Suddenly the reorder comes to our table with black tea instead of green tea. Within seconds later, after a half hour of waiting our original order comes. The waitress is completely confused. In this time, we already ate the self-serve part of our breakfast. Completely and utterly ruined. Still, I would return.

There are loads of bars and restaurants nearby, and it's a 15 minute walk to the city centre (there is also a Quayside electric bus which takes you to the centre, or you can take a taxi from outside the hotel). Now on to the interior...I just love it! It's dark and sensual with a lot of purples. The rooms are spacious, and the suites are fantastic: luxurious comfort is how I would describe it. And those beds?! Amazing night's sleep. My husband is American and it's traditional to host a Rehearsal Dinner before your wedding. We held this is a private dining area in the brasserie and from all the planning to the actual event, I could not have had better service. The food is all made on site by the chef and his/her team, and it was delicious. The spa is really adorable, and a lovely place to come and relax. We had a couple's massage. The staff were extremely professional and I loved chilling out in the relaxation room. 5/5 for everything about this place. We had such a great experience from start to finish.

We had a lovely experience at the Hotel du Vin. On our first visit to Newcastle upon Tyne, this…read morehotel was a short walk from The Cluny Music Hall, where our friends Noddy's Puncture Tribute to ELP was playing. Each room is named for a vintage of wine, which was really cute. The rooms were beautifully appointed and comfortable. We didn't set up for the breakfasts in advance, but we opted for them anyway on the fly. The bar and lounge area are particularly comfortable. After spending the day walking around Newcastle, we brought our party of 6 into the lounge, rearranged the overstuffed leather chairs and coffee tables for our group (the couches were all occupied by couples taking up way more space than they needed) - but put everything back in its proper spot afterward - for a nice nightcap before retiring. The staff was great, the young man tending bar obviously had several duties, but he was there when we went to sleep, and helping out with the breakfast service when we woke up. Even the woman on chamber-maid duties was cheery and friendly. It was a great stay and we highly recommend Hotel du Vin to any staying in the Newcastle area. We'll definitely be back again in the future. One side note to the hotel - you might want to find someplace less prominent to park the big blue cherrypicker.....it kinda detracts from the ambiance of the place.

Bath in the main room, open shower etc. Couldn't have been nicer. If I'm ever in Newcastle again this is where I'll stay.

There were only 2 redeeming features of the Caledonian Hotel. One - the friendly night duy manager…read morewho helped me get into my room (dodgy swipe card) and two - fantastic shower that acted like a massage. Otherwise, this is a terrible hotel. I got the room for half price - the original price being three figures for a mid week stay - and I can't see how it is justified. The foyer to the hotel smelled... really really bad. Enough to make me decide very quickly there was no danger I would eat anything from the attached restaurant (BillaBong). The pictures I saw online looked a lot better than the room I stayed in. Pictures are on here are a more accurate reflection. I had a double room and it was pretty cramped. Bathroom was extremely dated, and yup, there was mould around the shower. The table and chairs were all worn, stained and chipped. The heat was stifling - think more care home than hotel. I left the windows open during the day to cool the room down - I couldn't adjust the heat. The first evening, the wifi didn't work, and upon calling down to reception I was informed that wifi must be working, else people would be calling to complain...errr, hello? After convincing the receptionist that the wifi may not be working, the duty manager came up to test and confirmed that yup, it was down, and it wasn't the first time that day. Bang went my hopes of working that night. The second night fared better - wifi up for a start, so that was good. However what wasn't so good was the 540 fire alarm because another guest had left a shower running all night. Finally, breakfast. I think I paid an addition 6 quid for continental, which was effecticaly some tinned grapefruit, dry bread for toasting, cereal or some soggy value croissants. For 11 quid I could have had some overcooked hash browns from a buffet. Given that my previous hotel stay was cheaper, comfier and fresh home cooked food... there is no comparison. How hotels like this stay in business I have no idea, but I certainly won't be back. Awful.
