The ER doctor diagnosed pancreatitis and accused him of being an alcoholic. This couldn't be further from the truth. The nurse was rude as well and threw some papers at him for prescriptions that were never explained to him. He was then given some morphine, discharged, and sent out of the hospital with no shoes on, on morphine, and no ride lined up due to the lack of communication. He has been home in horrendous pain and life threatening dehydration. We are having an IV van go to his house to hydrate him because he refuses to go to the hospital or doctor due to the traumatic experience he had. If you have an emergency, go to Little River!

While there, I was seen by Dr. Pangia who did not do an exam. So I requested to have a nurse come to my room explained to them how I felt neglected and requested a patient advocate. Next thing I know, the doctor comes back in extremely aggravated and accuses me, while on video call with my mother, of being pissed because he wouldn't give me IV pain medication. Mind you, something that was NEVER mentioned. I continuously try to explain to him what I was actually upset with only to be met with being cut off and not allowed to speak as he is raising his voice at me. I walk out of the room and yell for someone to come help as he's following me and still raising his voice at me. The charge nurse then comes in, allows me to speak freely, and gives me the contact information for the patient advocate. Considering the situation was recorded and I have evidence of the interaction, I will be obtaining an attorney for medical negligence.

The Practice office manager (Cathy) proceeded to come into the waiting room and inform me that I could not swap doctors (which was originally Catherine Bourne-NP} Particularly upsetting was that this conversation took place in the waiting room, in front of other patients who were sitting and waiting to be called, rather than in a private office setting. I felt this situation lacked professionalism and sensitivity. Additionally, I felt insulted by the repeated statement that "we do not swap patients." The wording itself felt inappropriate and demeaning. Patients are individuals seeking medical care, not objects to be swapped or traded. Throughout the conversation, the office manager repeatedly emphasized that Catherine Bourne, NP, had received many accolades. My concern, however, was never about credentials or accolades. Unfortunately, our experience with Catherine Bourne, NP, was not a positive one, and a previous letter had already been submitted regarding our first visit. At that time, my husband was undergoing both radiation and chemotherapy, and we were already dealing with an overwhelming and emotionally difficult situation. All I wanted was for my husband to see a neurologist who could better understand his condition and provide care that was more compatible with his needs. My husband was experiencing aggressive dementia symptoms, which require patience, understanding, and compassionate care. I understand that physicians may have the right to decline taking on a patient if necessary. However, I do not understand why a patient should not have the opportunity to seek another provider who may be a better fit for their medical and emotional needs.

I came in with worsening symptoms that I knew were not normal. Despite clearly communicating how my condition was progressing, I felt as though I was being medically gaslit. Because my lab values, MRIs, and echocardiograms appeared "normal," my very real and escalating symptoms were repeatedly minimized and ultimately labeled as psychosomatic. What made this even more troubling was the apparent bias I experienced due to my mental health history. I was open about having bipolar disorder, yet instead of being treated with thoughtful, comprehensive care, it felt like my concerns were filtered through that diagnosis--used as a reason to discredit rather than to better support me. When I expressed serious concerns about continuing my pregnancy--considering both my physical health and mental well-being, as well as the safety of my child--I was not met with compassion or proactive care. Instead, I was essentially told that I would need to "stick it out" for several more weeks, or wait until my condition, specifically preeclampsia, became severe enough to warrant intervention. Being told, in so many words, that I would only be taken seriously once my health took a dangerous turn is unacceptable. No patient should feel like they have to get sicker to be believed. Healthcare is supposed to be built on trust, listening, and early intervention--not dismissal and delay. I hope this review serves as a wake-up call to examine how patients--especially those with mental health histories--are treated when they advocate for themselves. I deserved to be heard. I deserved better care.
