We had a great time shopping for my daughter's first pair of shoes (See Kai Run) as she's learning to walk! The owner immediately pointed out the shoes that would be relevant, and she made sure our daughter had the right size. What a relief! Super fantastic! With all the Nordstrom's shut down in the city, we needed to pick up a dress shirt for my eight-year-old son at the last minute, and because of Dottie Doolittle's excellent web presence, I was able to find the store, understand that they had dress shirts for little boys, and shoot over to pick one up. And a belt, and a tie! I was really pleased by how extensive their assortment was in addition to little boys clothing, and Elena was super helpful. Will be back in the future! read more

We were visiting the neighborhood and decided to stop in. This store has a broad range of items and brands are high quality. What was upsetting to me was when we got home noticed that we had been overcharged by $10 for almost every item we purchased (3 of 5 items). They advertised a sale of 40% off as well and we not only got no discounts but were overcharged for already quite expensive clothes. I was also annoyed by how highly gendered the boys toddler clothes were (options of camouflage or fierce tigers for what we were looking for). Don't think we'll be hurrying back anytime soon. read more

I needed a last minute christening outfit for my son, and called here to check if they had something that might work. The woman on the phone (the owner I think) said they 'usually had a couple things' so I had hope but not high expectations. Boy was I wrong. They had a ton of options, including traditional formal gowns made of dupioni silk or cotton, for both girls and boys. They also had a good selection of white infant clothes (onesies, sweaters, hats, etc.) that I could have used in a pinch. Their selection is amazing. That said, this is a place to buy heirloom quality children's clothes. The prices are not cheap. There are some affordable things that have Baby Gap prices (e.g. $40-60 for a sweater, although I do think Baby Gap is very overpriced, but that's another thing). So you either go here to buy special, once-in-a-blue-moon clothes for your kids, like me, or you get everyday clothes here because you have $. Oh, and I found the owner to be so so helpful - she pulled several pieces that could work for me, knew where everything was, entertained my irritated infant and, when I needed a sweater as an afterthought, she brought me one off the sale rack, which I appreciated. I can see how some might find her sharp or even rude - she has a no-nonsense demeanor and is very frank. She's a businesswoman, and that takes a lot of persistence and grit. If she were a male business owner who occasionally barked at customers, I think most people would think she was eccentric rather than a B I Trans Canada Highway, if you get my drift. BEWARE!! HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. OWNER IS AWFUL. AWFUL! I went to Dottie Doolittle today. I was shopping, and about to check out with a few items, asked a store worker if they gift wrapped. The worker said yes. I then purchased some sale items. After I purchased, the owner walks down, and put the articles in a bag. I said, "oh, I would like these items gift wrapped?" She told me that sale items are not available for gift wrap. I explained that one of her workers told me that they would gift wrap, and that she didn't qualify that statement, sale items, vs regular priced items.....I asked her to honor and please gift wrap? She wouldn't budge. Was very rude. Maybe they have a minimum to gift wrap, and typically sale items don't hit that threshold? I pressed again, because I made the purchase based on her employee's assertion that they gift wrapped. I was looking for an easy gift wrap option, and may have made a different decision purchasing, but now was stuck because all sales were final regarding marked down items. The owner could have made an exception, for her hired worker's mistake...instead, she took a stand, and would not gift wrap my items, that totaled close to $90. Very frustrating, and not a way to do business, in my opinion. I would stay clear from this place, customer service is not a priority, and they are downright rude! They have no business being small business owners. Please do not give them your business. read more

My experience with Dottie Doolittle started at infancy. As a tiny premature baby, it was one of the few spots in town the stocked things in my size. Fast forward to 6 years old... Saturday mornings at I. Magnin and saturday afternoons at Dottie Doolittle. They had the best European smocked dresses EVER. And still do, for that matter. Hit Dottie Doolittle and you'll have the most impressive gift outfit at your friend's baby shower. For the new babies, they carry easy wash cotton stuff (and let's face it, that's what moms want) by Zutano, Kissy Kissy and Petit Bateau, along with fancy christening gowns, hand knit sweaters and those fancy outfits they wear one time before they grown out of 'em. Great toddler stuff too. Babies up to sz 16 for girls and 12 for boys. Too bad they don't make smocked dresses in my size. My favorite one was pink. With ice cream cones. read more

Everyone here is so friendly and they go out of their way to help you. They have a huge inventory of amazing clothes for all ages. They even do special holiday events for the kids. The store has a very intimate feel which is very welcoming. We bought a few outfits for our daughter and just mentioned a toy we had been looking for. They found it in a second and brought it out to us. I have a feeling that we will be coming here often and checking back for the Easter Bunny and Santa. read more

The selection is huge and it's made up of probably some of the cutest things I've ever saw & this is coming from a dude. The staff was cool and not overly friendly. This is so much better than Baby Gap/Gymboree or the other corporate baby/kids clothing chains. @the same time the prices are HOLY BABY JESUS high but this is a San Francisco boutique in Laurel Heights....so it's expected. Great selection but the store is quite disorganized, expensive and the service was very off-putting - staff ignored us except for when my husband went to the upstairs part of the store. A woman asked him in an odd (not warm) tone "Can I help you???" and when he explained that he was looking for newborn clothing she said in a snide tone "Well you're not going to find THAT up here." and offered no further help. The same woman also said she's not allowed to talk to customers in front of a group of .. customers. Awkward. The rest of the staff, despite there being at least 3 of them, ignored us. Honestly after the experience and seeing the prices I wanted to walk out the store, but we were in a pinch (needed something before the holidays) and ended up spending $130 on two sweaters. It's a really cute shop for all the preppy (sometimes slightly hip) needs of the spawn of the well-heeled set. The selection of girls clothing far out strips the boys selection. It's like that everywhere really. It's not cheap in any sense of the word. But it's one of the few places that regularly stocks neckties for under 2 boys. What? I needed one for an event. From party to play clothes and a very small assortment of toys, it's not a bad place to hit if you've no idea what to get a young kid. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. We were so excited to buy our (eight) flower girl dresses at Dottie Doolittle. I was told they were $100 a piece and this was exactly our budget. After giving them my credit card and asking for an invoice or total before charging my card, they "forgot" and overcharged my credit card by $450! They said the dresses are suddenly $50 more a piece and now final sale - which they never told me before charging my card. Maggie, the owner said there's nothing she is willing to do for me even after admitting their mistake. Not even 10% off. She was even rude to me by saying, the vendor isn't giving me a discount, why should I give you one? This was YOUR mistake. How do you not verify the price of an item before charging your customer and then up the price?! I'm appalled that this shop runs like this, I am such a supporter of small business but this would have never happened at Nordstrom. I have worked in retail my whole life and I would never imagine treating a customer like this. Would never give this store my business even if she did the right thing. Luckily I got my money back and am happily ordering through another boutique who deserves it. read more

We had the worst experience here today. They have some necklaces in glass vials at the cash register. My son asked the clerk what it was, and she said to him in a condescending tone - "they're really fragile so don't touch it". He hadn't touched it, wasn't even contemplating touching it - so the warning really came out of left field. It's also bizarre because this is a kid store - so why stock things that kids can't touch? They made us feel really unwelcome and needless to say we won't be coming back. read more

I brought a pregnant girl friend here who needed to get inspired after finding out she's having a boy... and then I couldn't resist the sales rack in the back to get some more gifts for other friends who's recently had babies or are expecting (yes I am at that stage in my life). This store is out of this world! I was looking for a cute Christmas dress for my daughter and ended up finding that and so much more! The selection is incredible. They have a beautiful layette selection, everyday outfits, and fabulous dresses and formal wear. There are also shoes, bows, and other accessories to go with everything. I'm completely a fan of this baby/children clothing boutique! For the first time, I've finally come across a store which carries as many clothing items for boys as it does for girls:) They also have a full collection of Petit Bateau which I find is essential in dressing any little boy. They carry all the same brands that you would find at Nordstroms or Bloomingdales, but without the hassle of being in Union Square. The pricing is also about the same as the larger stores, but the staff is completely knowledgeable and helpful in all their brands they carry. I'm looking forward to going back to see what is new and thank you to the staff for letting me know when new stock is due. Love this place! read more

From the minute it opened, I always wanted to be able to buy things for a little girl at Dottie Doolittle. My sister had two boys, so shopped at Young Man's Fancy. Once in a while one of of my pals' little girls had a birthday party to which we were invited, and I always went to Dottie Doolittle. Now nephews are grown; one has a little girl whose first birthday is next week. I've been to the store twice this week -- too many marvelous things to decide. Am going back tomorrow to make the final decision. Can hardly wait -- not just for this birthday, but for many more. Great clothes, beautifully made. Expensive?
