They provide a stellar education while teaching students the importance of being a contributing member of society, taking care of themselves while also looking out for and caring about others. Community service is a graduation requirement. Students not only learn about problems Facing today's society,, they are encourage to develop and apply solutions. We were assured that she could and were encouraged to enroll. Unfortunately, our experience was very different. We repeatedly tried to contact our daughter's teacher, Françoise Coulon Lantz, to ask how we could support a beginner French learner at home. Communication did not occur until I showed up in-person requesting a meeting. During that meeting, she described our daughter as not knowing her purpose at school and acting "goofy." She then said many students had French-speaking parents, grandparents, or connections to France and asked, "What do you have?" As multilingual immigrants, this was surprising. I speak four languages and my husband speaks seven. We have never been asked to justify learning a language based on ancestry or cultural ties. We believe language education should be open to all children. Our daughter became afraid to ask questions, felt singled out at snack time, and excluded from classroom activities shared with parents in group chat. She was also expected to request restroom permission in French despite being a beginner, which often left her afraid to speak up! We also had concerning interactions with Pierre Burthey, who said families typically attend ILA due to French cultural ties or the ability to afford private school, then asked which applied to us. He also suggested our daughter might be better suited for public school. The impact on our daughter was significant. By the end of the fall term, she was anxious about attending school and often resisted going. We withdrew her. After winter break, the school created an individualized plan with other teacher replacing Françoise, and she thrived--regaining confidence and enjoying learning again. After three month, we were told by Pierre of his decision: our daughter is required to return to Françoise's class despite her distress. When we raised concerns, we felt dismissed and withdrew her that day. We are grateful to Valentin Raclot, Scott Murphy, Beatriz Ruiz, Valérie Rogers, Daour Mboup, Marc Bescond, Bayel Sarr, and Colin Labelle for their professionalism, kindness, and support. However, our overall experience at the 3rd-5th grade level was overwhelmingly negative. Families with children entering French immersion without prior experience should carefully consider whether this environment is the right fit. For our family, it was a nightmare!

In the grade we were in, we knew of three children that were expelled in that year... When there are 40 kids in that grade, and three are expelled, that is a serious and crazy rate. It really hurts the kids, their self-esteem, to think that they're not worthy of being there. There is definitely racism, bias, and preferential treatment. If you do get into trouble, there is no room for talking through said things- they decide and that's it. As an aside, the uniforms are awfully ugly. The principal is extremely strict. If you like a school ruled by authoritarianism and emotion (vice principal's mode of action) then this is the school for your child.

Then, we began to inquire further around preschool policies, such as discipline and toilet independence. In retrospect, we should have dug deeper much earlier on in the process. The director of the preschool explained the toilet independence expectation, and here is a direct quote from the email we received: "Potty Training, We are completely hands off for any potty training assistance. I would take time before fall to work on wiping to grow this skill as we at school are unable to help. Regarding potty accidents that happen when asleep, we encourage working on this over summer. We do a potty break right before nap to ensure we do not have potty accidents when sleeping, however other than the occasional accident, students should be able to sleep without an accident. With that said if he does have an accident he will need to change his clothes 100% on his own." This policy is rigid and developmentally inappropriate for the age of three. Anyone with an early childhood background would immediately agree. Perhaps there was an incident that occurred at the school that caused them to become so rigid with this policy? It is not a common policy across programs in this area for this age. Before you enroll, make sure to ask about this and their discipline policy, to ensure your toddler is safe and supported both academically and psychologically at this tender age.

In a world where education puts kids in a box, The Catlin Gabel School is a refreshing tangent. I am so impressed with the students who have attended this school. They are the most mature kids who have been educated in a way that brings out the best of their gifts and abilities. Last year I had a student intern from Catlin at my place of business and I was so impressed. She was able to produce a professional video that reached the heart of my acupuncture practice and business. The first thought for most is that they cannot afford the school, but they have a complete system for financial grants and scholarships based on what you can realistically afford. According to the website: "More than one-quarter of the student body receives financial assistance through need-based grants and special scholarships. Grant and scholarship awards are not loans and do not have to be paid back. In 2013-14, we allocated over $3.4 million in financial aid to families with annual household incomes primarily in the range of $15,650 to $170,000. Award grants ranged from $1,830 to $25,750 and averaged $16,235." We hope our boys can attend this school next year or in the future and we applying for the 2014-15 school year. When there's a conflict or a mean‑kid moment, the staff actually handle it fairly instead of brushing it off, and they always loop us in immediately if our daughter isn't feeling well. She's also grown so much academically here. She can now fully read books and do basic math and she's almost done with their kindergarten class.
