First and foremost I did a LOT of pre research. It paid off. Captn Dean and his Deck Hand first mate all around great guy Billy are totally serious fisherman and charter team. Lots of other charters look good, sound good and probably advertise flashier and better. But the bottom line is, if you want to catch fish rather than just saying you went out fishing, then THIS is the charter boat to take. Why this ranks as a 4 Star is rediculous, and if your doing a half day charter then that's a mistake IF your serious about cathing fish. They WILL put you on fish! We booked for two days during Memorial Day Weekend and caught a boatload both days! We were freaking physically sore both days from catching fish. Blackfin tuna, Barracuda, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Bonita, Skipjacks, Kingfish and a couple of seaweed monsters. We did two days of Full day charters. I recommend you do a full day IF your serious about cathing fish. If you do half days with anyone, your likely not serious and depending on weather, etc you may miss the bite if you're out there for only 3.5 hours. If I was going to book half day it would definitely only be Double D because he gets you on the fish. When we returned on both days, we were the ONLY boat cleaning fish! We are definitely coming back and want to do his overnight Bahama trips. He's good with all sorts of anglers, my daughters husband had never fished before, my daughter had fished a lot of freshwater and I had done both but it had been years. read more

We had booked a 9 hour trip and started off strong with 7 mahi in the first hour. After that, all they did was put the boat on auto pilot trolling until all of us were motion sick and throwing up asking to leave early. Felt like a slight scam to do the 9 hour. read more

I have fished with Dean several times and I have referred him to a family member and a few friends. He is always professional, knows his waters well. We fished for two days and extremely happy with what we caught. I brought my 12 year old this time and he had a blast. First mate Billy is great, and really knows his stuff. read more

Captain Dean is a no nonsense serious fisherman. He fishes over 300 days a year and all the big sailfish tournaments with 30 years of charter experience. He fishes out of 34ft Sea Vee with twin 300 Mercury Verados, awesome fishing boat. My six year old son and I chartered him for a three quarter day charter. We left the dock at exactly 7:00 am and headed to get bait. The usual routine for live bait kite fishing in south Florida is to get fresh bait on your way out. We bought goggle eyes and pilchards from the bait boat. We then caught our own threadfin herring. This takes time but is well worth it to get fresh live bait. Since Dean had fished a tournament the day before(his team took third), he had a good line on where the hot bite was happening. We ran far south down near Fowery Light. This is why half day trips are not really a good idea for this type of fishing. We caught a double header of sailfish, a double of Mahi, several Bonita, and a pig blackfin tuna. We also had a couple other knock downs of sails and kingfish that didn't get the hook.(that's fishing) We had a great time. The captain and mate worked their butts off to put us on the fish. If your looking for super entertaining jolly captain, Dean is not the guy. He is a serious hard working captain who wants to catch fish. I would recommend doing a full day charter. We did a three quarter day since I didn't know how my son would do on the blue water. My son was asking when we could fish with them again by the time we pulled out of the marina. read more

I have been around fishing a while and fished with many charter captains before. Capt Dean (Double D) is the best there is. He puts you on the fish. He is an expert on the fishing grounds. His professionalism, safety, reliability and knowledge is second to none. Having fished with him a few times I can truly say he makes every fishing experience great. Perhaps what is most impressive about Capt Dean is that after being a charter Capt for 30 years, he makes every fish you catch exciting! It's rare you see a guy like Capt Dean who not only treats you catching fish as his top priority but can teach the way he teaches. I travel from NJ just to fish w him. Wouldn't even consider another charter. Tight lines! read more

Double D is not the boat for newbies. As Todd C said, Captain Dean is a serious fisherman but I also think that's code for saying he's an ass. If I say this is new for me, teach me, DON'T make fun of my rookie mistakes. If I'm paying for the trip, don't hand most of the Sailfish off to the one other guy, while handing me the Bonita's and sharks. You know what is on the line, and it was obvious what you were doing. If you say 3/4 of a day means we dock at 2:30 don't change it to 1:30 and say you never said it and I must be confused. I would not go back out with this guy as other's would appreciate it more and not be as big of an ass. I almost ate the 2nd days deposit to book with another boat. You are not required to be nice, but it helps keep customers. I wish I had read other reviews on other sites before I booked as others have said the same thing about his being an ass or prick. read more

Despite the rough weather we caught a few sailfish. One was just over 90 inches. I'd love to see what he could do without a six foot chop!

3 friends and I went on a half day charter. Since its a half day charter I would think the charter would already have bait provided, but we went to catch our own bait for about an hour or more, then whet back in to a bait boat to buy more bait for the target species (Goggle eyes for Sailfish). Since we did not already have bait and had to go back in to buy more, we did not have time left to go out to the gulf stream at least according to Dean, the owner and operator. Dean was not helpful or talkative at all. When he did speak it was rude or snappy, or sarcastic. He seemed to be in a hungover mood. I checked the fishing report, excited to go on my first charter, and dolphin were biting in the stream and we would have had time to go out there if it wasn't for the bait fishing. Ive fished enough on friends boats out of Fort Lauderdale to know this guy wasn't really even trying especially for the price we paid. $600. When we got back to the marina he became talkative like he was anxious to get us off of his boat so he could go to the Bahamas himself. Not only that, but another boat that left the dock at the same time as us in the morning, were already back and were cleaning mahi mahi at the dock. AVOID THIS CHARTER!!! read more

Fished with dean on double d today. It was just the two of us on the boat and we had epic fishing - went 9 for 13 on sails to 75lbs (the first two misses were my screw ups). Also had two nice kingfish and two mahi. Dean worked his tail off to make sure we caught as many fish as possible and was an enjoyable guy to spend the day with. Very fish able, new boat too. Look forward to fishing with him again. read more
