We stopped in at Crazy Dog Grill in Chillicothe today and I'm so glad we did! From the moment we…read morewalked in, we were greeted by the owner, Debbie, who couldn't have been more welcoming. She took the time to walk us through the menu and even shared how she cashed in her retirement to follow her dream of owning this place. You can tell her heart is in every bite. The menu covers all the good stuff--burgers, fried bologna, chicken tenders--but as the name suggests, the real stars are the loaded hot dogs. They start with a big locally sourced 6-to-1 all-beef dog and then pile on some wild toppings. I went with the Mactastic Dog--two strips of grilled bacon, creamy housemade mac & cheese, and a drizzle of sweet and tangy BBQ sauce, all on a perfectly steamed bun. Absolute perfection. I also couldn't resist trying the Bologna Coney, which was a thick grilled slice of bologna (cut in half) topped with Debbie's "almost famous" homemade coney sauce, a hit of stadium mustard, diced onions, and a generous handful of shredded cheese. I made it a combo with fries and a drink, and it did not disappoint. My wife ordered the Slaw Dog and loved every bite. As a former chef, I've got a soft spot for simple food done right--and that's exactly what Crazy Dog Grill delivers. The place itself has a fun, casual vibe with tables on two levels and some great classic rock playing in the background. If you're anywhere near Chillicothe, run, don't walk to Crazy Dog Grill. Ask for Debbie's "almost famous" coney sauce (I'm trying to make it officially famous!), and if you're a mac and cheese lover--trust me--get the Mactastic Dog. You'll thank me later. Tell Debbie Brian and Candi said hello!!

I ordered the Jr. Slaw dog which is a regular size hotdog with brown mustard and a heaping amount of slaw. My side was the in house made chips. They were fresh and crisp. The ambiance was a very clean at home experience. Nothing fancy but clean and well cared for. I highly recommend this hidden gem.

The set up is hilariously insane, worth the stop alone. The cashier was fun and friendly, and the graffiti in the women's room was inspiring! I have a basic bitch stomach, so got the "Puppy" with just ketchup. Sproßling got the Mothman, garnished with I believe onion rings and 1000 Island. Husband got his smothered in jalapeños. We split a full size onion rings, which were hot and tasty. We all had Gold Peak tea. The dogs tasted great, if I had a normal stomach I would have gotten a second one. As it was, we were in and out and back on the road quick as a wink!

Tucked away just a few minutes off I-64 in Barboursville, WV, this place offers eccentric hot dogs at a reasonable price. Using all beef dogs they create some wild and crazy options as well as the basics. Surprisingly they have non-dog choices and some vegetarian options too. Look, truth be told the dogs themselves are average, but you're not here just for the food. You're here for the experience. The place is decorated - every square inch of it - with stuff that looks like it came right off the Clampett's jalopy. (Look it up kids.) Bring your aw shucks attitude, because the punny signs are everywhere. And with a little planning ahead, apparently you can actually get married in the Weddin' Chapel. It's tacky and corny and therefore the perfect roadside stop. We arrived around 11:30 on a Sunday and had a short wait. When we left under an hour later, the line was creeping towards the street. Our line moved quickly in part to the friendly staff. The wait for our food wasn't long either. There was plenty of outdoor shady seating, but you can also sit inside in their "renovated" school bus. Is it a 5-star dining experience? No. Is it a 5-star road trip destination. You bet yer britches!

But come on! The sweet and savory combinations is hard to beat! The fries and tots are cooked to perfection every time. I like mine loaded with chili, cheese & onions. Dranks...HELL YEAH! They have a delicious Red Lady that I make dangerous with a shot or two of vodka. My husband enjoys the various liquors and German beers they have. Service...this Army Veteran kid Dave is amazing at shaking and pouring. My husband and I love his ability to suggest something on the fly, and serve awesome dranks and service. He made breakfast shots that did not disappoint. Ambiance...we prefer the bar, but this place has plenty of indoor seating AND they have outdoor seating as well. What does all this mean? It means we can ALL meet up there after work and have a great West Virginia day!!!! Breakfast to dinner and day drankin'!!!
