Went horseback riding in April with my husband and 2 kids ages 7 and 10. It was my kids first time on a horse. The staff and owners were amazing with the kids, we came in the middle of an intense thunderstorm and they let the kids help feed the horses and explained about their personalities while we waited for the weather to clear. My husband ended up being a last minute addition and they accommodated us without any issue. It was a great experience and it was a nice quiet ride since they are at the other end of the national park from the main entrance. Rocky is fantastic. We took our Girl Scout troop and she helped us earn our Badge. She talked to and showed the girls and had them try taking care of the horses. Then we went for a beautiful ride in the park. The facilities are clean and well kept, the horses well cared for, and on top of it all my daughter left her coat and Rocky went through the extra trouble if mailing it back to us. Visited for an impromptu Sunday summer trail ride. Dave and Rocky are the coolest cowpeople we've EVER met, our guide Naiya was so sweet and friendly, and we met fellow horse loving travelers. The route was beautiful, my horse loved eating leaves but I eventually learned how to keep her away from the tree buffet. Come a little early to meet the chickens and pet all the horses! Great fun! We were afraid of getting lost so arrived way too early. Rocky graciously checked us in, introduced us to the team and welcomed us to go meet and greet the horses and take a look around. Dave came and introduced himself, shared their story of how Double J came to be and gave us a tour. We hadn't ridden horses in over 50 years. Sarah was our guide and took our group out for a 2 hour tour. The weather looked "iffy" before we left and about 1/2 way through it started to rain but we were under the canopy of the forest so we didn't get very wet and the horses weren't bothered at all. I was perfectly paired with Squirt and my husband rode Fritz (which was my grandpa's nickname-cool, huh?). We truly enjoyed the whole experience! read more

Had a great experience riding with this stable and their wonderful horses. From the time we got there to the time we left, everything was very professional, but also VERY fun. Definitely a light-hearted experience, but there was no nonsense. We didn't waste any time at all. By the time we finished some paperwork we went outside and the horses were already set up and ready to go. The trail was very peaceful and we even had a deer run out on the trail maybe 15 yards in front of us. Be sure to swat the GIANT horse flies away from your horse to show them appreciation for carrying you around! Haha The horses are very good, and for a first-time rider, I wasn't nervous at all. I cannot tell you how great Double J was! Everyone was amazingly friendly. The horses were top notch, each with their own personality. Went for a 1.5 hour trail ride and it was the best thing about Mammoth Cave trip. We were two total newbs, but they explained everything we needed to know. Fantastic! The prices cannot be beat, the horses are healthy and friendly, the owners rock (we were given fresh blackberries to taste), and the trails/scenery are gorgeous. I hadn't ridden in 20 years and nothing about this experience made feel out of practice. Call a day ahead to get a reservation because the group sizes are small (ours was 5) and they fill up fast. If you're an advanced rider the 2 hour trip may be a bit dull (they offer longer trips, too) but if you're a novice or beginner, it is absolutely perfect! We had a wide range of skill levels, from an 8 and 10 year old with minimal experience to adults with several years of experience, and we all enjoyed the ride! Wyatt was a great guide and kept the kids engaged as they rode up front. He calmly talked my daughter through how to get her horse to turn around and rejoin the group when it tried to go its own way. Very disappointed in the attitude of the owner Dave. He is rude and condescending. We stayed in the campground with our horses, it seems like all the good reviews are of the trail riding business they have which seems to be tan by the wife. The husband who is a very small man believes he is a large man who has a chip on his shoulder. Don't waste your money with these people they have no business interacting with the public on any level. Go somewhere else and spend your money with people who are appreciative to have you there and want you to have a good experience. If I could rate them as a zero star I would. read more

And they had an adorable chicken coop too. Horses were beautiful, and healthy. Horses very well trained, and did great on the trails. We had Tina as our tour guide, she was great, very helpful. Really a outstanding experience for my girls. The owners could not have been friendlier. We took a 2 hour trail ride thru Mammoth Cave NP. Went on a trail ride with my wife and 2 kids (ages 6 and 8) on June 16th. This was a great experience and the kids absolutely loved it...they can't stop talking about the ride and their horse. Don't think you can beat the location and the fact that the trail goes through the Mammoth Cave National Park creating some great scenery. All the folks at Double J Stables are so friendly and accommodating. They took the time to explain everything to my kids making sure they understood and were comfortable with riding. At the end of the ride each kid got a horseshoe and it's now one of their prized possessions. You can tell that Dave and Rocky and all the folks at Double J Stables love what they're doing and I think that makes for a much more enjoyable experience. I'm not sure when we'll be back in the area, but when we are, I would without a doubt go for another ride at the Double J. I wouldn't even have to ask my kids twice. When we checked into the Mammoth Cave Hotel, we were given a brochure for the Double J Stables, advertising a campground and horse back riding. I'd done some research online here at TripAdvisor and was a bit concerned with the other stables ratings. The Double J reviews were good, so we went with them. I called on a Monday, not knowing that they are closed. I left a message about a possible Tuesday reservation and got a call back on Monday night. We decided to do an hour and a half ride on Tuesday due to the ages of the grandkids (6 and 9) and the fact that the rest of the party wasn't very experienced either. When we arrived on Tuesday we were greeted by the owner Dave and our guide, Krchelle. Both were friendly and after we filled out the required paperwork and paid, our party of 6 were matched to our horses. We ran the gamut from incredibly tame (Casper which the 6 year old rode) to Coco, who I think was a little more spirited. All in all, though they were all gentle and followed one another closely, it was still exactly what I wanted. I wanted my grandkids to experience the fun of riding drama-free, so that will want to go again and again till they can enjoy a more spirited journey. The trail entered the north side of Mammoth Park and that was awesome - we got to see part of the park that we would never have seen otherwise. I'm not sure, but I believe if you are more experienced, there were other trails in the park and possibly more lively horses to ride. I'm sure you could contact the stable and get that information. I found them to be very approachable and kind. We had a good long ride, but in retrospect I should have only chosen an hour ride - some of the older members of the party were fine, but the kids became a little bored at about the hour mark. We came only for the trail rides. We got the 2 hour ride and had a great time. If you are looking for a more authentic ride, not the commercialized version this is a great choice. Trails are in Mammoth Caves National Park with beautiful views. The horses have great and varied personalities . The staff was friendly and down to earth. You will need cash payment. We happened upon Double J on a road trip. We were only going to be in the Louisville/Lexington area for half a day, and our other plans fell through, so we were looking for something for our horse-loving 9 year old to do. We reached out to Double J and they booked us on a 2 hour ride later that day. Everyone there was incredibly friendly and welcoming. They brought my daughter right into the stables and encouraged her to get to know the horses and showed her around the place. When it came time to mount our horses, they walked around to each rider and told them the important things to know about their individual horse, made sure they were comfortable, and answered any questions. The ride itself was beautiful, and our trail guide was wonderful. She was very personable and interactive with the three kids in our group, and she shared great information about the area. What a super gem near Mammoth Cave. My wife and I had been to Nolin Lake for a weekend getaway and saw a brochure for horseback riding at Double J. I called and made reservations for a 2 hour trail ride. We were welcomed by Rocky, an owner, and expertly guided by Bo (sp?). The horses were all friendly and needed no assistance from us to guide them along the trails thru Mammoth Cave N.P. we couldn't have been more pleased and will definitely return to ride again. When we first arrived on site, we were greeted warmly by Dave, one of the owners. We were early, so he said we were welcome to look around. He told us where everything was, and when to meet back to get started. The property is beautiful and peaceful, and includes a playground for the kids. We didn't camp there this time, but will next time, after seeing it. All the horses are very relaxed and friendly, well cared for and very easy riding. Before the ride, we registered & paid, they also sell bottled water if you forget to bring some, they provide a horn bag for the saddle so you can hold the water & a camera or other small items. 3 of our group were fine with riding, but the young one was very nervous- that faded before we even reached the trail head though, and she was already smiling and enjoying herself. Tina was our trail guide, and is a master at handling nervous kids. At the end of the ride we met up with Rocky, the other owner, who was happy to answer all our questions. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. All of us want to go back, with our young one wanting to go again the same day. I highly recommend these lovely folk to anyone who wants a nice trail ride at reasonable rates with great people. read more

I called yesterday and was told you had to be there by 5. I was 4 hours away. So we stayed at a different campground for one night and I called the next day and asked if any sites were available for two nights. He said yes and then he proceeded to say he remembered me calling the day before and I explained again that it was not possible to be there at 5pm. He told me at that moment that no sites were available. So not only was he extremely rude but he also lied. I wouldn't want to give my money to a business who treats people in an unkind and deceitful way. We are going to Spring Hill campground and the owner was so understanding and kind. I will leave a review about them but just in the phone call I can tell he knows how to treat his customers! read more
