Our rude front desk girl
Chad C.

Customer service is not at all a priority. Front desk girl was rude. I guess we don't fit the criteria here . Definitely wouldn't recommend this place for a stay. I'd definitely look for someplace else . Strong odor of chlorine as soon as you walk in . Headache status

Black mold
Matthew G.

After driving 10 hours we checked into our room 312 and upon going into the rest room we noticed black mold all over the ceiling tiles, and covering the walls and under the sink. There were also what looks to be food stains on the walls and a water leak above the sink. We brought it to the manager (Sabine) attention she stated we could just check out snce this property is not owned by Hilton & she couldn't offer anything else or honor the price at another Hilton property nearby! We had to call HHONORS whom was able to get us a room at another location for a higher rate! Beware Black mold is extremely dangerous and if its this bad in one room its definitely throughout the property!

Someone swimming laps in the pool, going along the diagonal to get the longest possible laps.

One of the quieter hotels I've stayed in, plus the staff are super helpful & friendly, and the fitness center is pretty nice. I've been traveling for a week and this is the quietest hotel I've stayed in all week. If you have a room that faces into the lobby, the lobby is pretty quiet, and if you have a room that faces out, most of the rest of the rooms face out into a quiet back lot. The gym is huge for a hotel gym. Unfortunately, the space is mostly empty, but they still have treadmills, ellipticals, a spin bike, a recumbent bike, a dip/hip flexor rack, and two benches with dumbells going up to 50 lbs. Also, the saltwater pool is long enough to be used as a short lap pool. It's weirdly shaped, so you have to swim on the diagonal, which makes one of the turns against a 45 degree wall, but it still beats the pool in most hotels. BTW, this hotel is old, and it shows. A lot of the finishes and furnishings show serious signs of wear and tear. I don't care about that kind of thing, but if you want a nice, shiny, polished, hotel, this is definitely not it.

Looking down on the indoor pool from my room.

Got to be the worst doubltree I've stayed at. The smell is absolutely awful. Its dark walls are rotting everywhere...

This trip so far has been the extreme opposite. We came to the hotel at 12:30 hoping to be able to check in a little early. We stood at the front desk for almost five minutes before a woman came out and said, "do you need something"? She asked our name and said, "we have nothing available right now". We had hoped to change clothes and freshen up before a meeting with University of Kansas officials and a subsequent dinner with them. There is no school going on at KU as commencement was the previous week. There were only six cars in the hotel garage. We have never been treated so rudely by a hotel's front desk personnel. I also asked when the room might be available and was told 4:00. She made no effort to look anything up or accommodate us in any way. Very disappointing.

The room I stayed in had plaster and paint peeling off of the wall in the bathroom. It also just felt very sparse--no carpet, no rug. The bed was only half made. Other reviewers have mentioned odd noises at night, which I also experienced. The service at the restaurant is absolutely terrible. I waited about 50 minutes after ordering breakfast. My order included a cup of coffee. After about 25 minutes, the lone server came over and explained that she had many things to do before she'd get to the coffee order and could I just get some coffee from the lobby instead? What?? You're serving breakfast and you can't just pour me a cup of coffee?? I would never, ever go back to this hotel. It's truly terrible.

Holiday inn Express Lawrence,  KS…read more My husband,  daughter  and I decided to stay at this hotel because  my husband has stayed at several other HIE hotels  on business in other cities  and liked them. Not so here. In fact, it was truly awful.  We booked a week here. Not a brief visit. We arrived late on a Friday night and had conveyed we'd be late due to a long drive. When I went to check in about 9:30pm a male, Asian front desk clerk said 'oh good. You're the last one I'm waiting for.'  OK ... we got our keys and went up to our Room 202. Immediately noticed a strong, stale, moldy mildew smell. The bathroom had wallpaper peeling off and a lot of mold in the shower crevices. The next morning, we went down to the grab and go breakfast. If you enjoy high sugar,  prepackaged gas station food...this one's for you.  I asked if there were any hard boiled eggs.  No. Coffee had no nondairy creamer and tasted like dirty water. We told the front desk  girl about the smell in our room and also requested additional towels.   When we used the keurig in our room, it was no better than the lobby coffee.  Headed to  IHOP disappointed. Upon returning that evening,  the smell in the room was no better. We ran the air conditioner  24/7. No extra towels....but there were dirty, wet ones in the wardrobe from the previous person. Gross. By the third morning, my husband and I were feeling terrible. Headaches,  congestion, generally  awful. That morning, we told the front desk they needed to resolve the smell and, by the way, still no extra towels and trash is overflowing.  That evening, we could tell something had been sprayed to cover the odor but the problem was not solved. My husband  went down to the front desk to  insist on a new room while my daughter and I packed up our stuff...including  the towels and wash cloths we finally got the  previous evening. Still trash and wet towels in the room. We moved to Room 224. Thankfully,  this room had no smell and was in good condition.  It is apparent that housekeeping and  maintenance  staff desperately need training. Our second room was never turned either. We saw the manager on 3 separate occasions,  including checkout,  and were never asked how our stay was. We noticed he was in his office and wondered how it's possible to manage a hotel from behind a desk? Hopefully,  the corporate owner and/or Holiday  Inn will realize this facility  requires desperate help so other customers will not be subjected to these issues in the future.

So, I made an on the fly reservation and hit the road. If you have ever driven from Denver to Lawrence for a KU CU game you know it's a legit drive. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. For being a mid-price point option it exceeded my expectations. The room was spacious and had a mini fridge for my Starbucks Cold Brew. The color scheme and the vibe of this property have a more youthful spirit, which aligns with my tastes and spirit. It has a pool table, a big TV for the Stanley Cup, a great room, and a place to purchase snacks. The room didn't have a dresser but had an area to hang my clothing. I left the dresser items in my carry-on bag. And stacked T-shirts and shorts on the bench area. There is also a work station that I used in the morning for news and emails. Strategic plug ins for charging overnight were also available. The bed was super comfortable and the climate control was perfect. The shades can go dark or can also allow for an outside view while keeping curios eyes blocked. The walk-in shower includes body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Lotion is also provided. The lemon body wash was amazing and I liked it better than my everyday brand. All in all, my experience made it an excellent stop for the first leg of my trip, so I looked for other Tru locations in every city I visited. Also, I'm looking to spend 5 nights at a Tru in Miami, FL, to watch Messi play in a few months.

They may have been washed but I couldn't tell since it wasn't a fresh smell. The bathroom door knob was loose and about to fall off. The breakfast was sub par. Curdled yogurt, no biscuit's and gravy that I could find. The frosting on the cake was when I went to take a shower and the shower knob wouldn't budge. Called the front desk to see if maybe I missed something. He implied I didn't know how to turn the knob correctly. He ( I assume mgr since he was training a new employee) said he would send a maintenance man, but, it was 10Pm. We were in our night gowns. So I said no not now, the time to fix it was when and if the housekeeper had reported it, which in my opinion would have been when she cleaned it. He handed the phone off to a trainee and left. I told the trainee to let him know I would meet him in the morning to discuss the matter. Of course, he wasn't there. This only happened 2 days ago so I'm still a bit miffed. We still enjoyed our bowling tourny, just won't stay here again.
