I have never stayed a Tru by Hilton but after reaching Hays, KS. I was sure I could make it to Lawrence for the third period of game one of the Stanley Cup. So, I made an on the fly reservation and hit the road. If you have ever driven from Denver to Lawrence for a KU CU game you know it's a legit drive. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. For being a mid-price point option it exceeded my expectations. The room was spacious and had a mini fridge for my Starbucks Cold Brew. The color scheme and the vibe of this property have a more youthful spirit, which aligns with my tastes and spirit. It has a pool table, a big TV for the Stanley Cup, a great room, and a place to purchase snacks. The room didn't have a dresser but had an area to hang my clothing. I left the dresser items in my carry-on bag. And stacked T-shirts and shorts on the bench area. There is also a work station that I used in the morning for news and emails. Strategic plug ins for charging overnight were also available. The bed was super comfortable and the climate control was perfect. The shades can go dark or can also allow for an outside view while keeping curios eyes blocked. The walk-in shower includes body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Lotion is also provided. The lemon body wash was amazing and I liked it better than my everyday brand. All in all, my experience made it an excellent stop for the first leg of my trip, so I looked for other Tru locations in every city I visited. Also, I'm looking to spend 5 nights at a Tru in Miami, FL, to watch Messi play in a few months. read more

not many hotel options in lawrence, picked tru based on the hilton label...usually have good success with the various hilton brands. not great. *very* minimal, no-frills room. housekeeping (every other day, which, fine. whatever) didn't clean the sink or shower. we don't usually do the free breakfast thing in hotels, but this one looked particularly crappy. probably will not do tru in the future. read more

I had a very good experience here the first time I stayed, so I decided to visit again during Thanksgiving weekend, 2024. Well, this time it was not so good. Walked into the room and saw this in the shower drain (see image). It was obvious the room had not been cleaned for us. I told the front desk and the employee changed my room, but I was also told that I would get a partial refund, but that did not happen. I haven't stayed at a Tru hotel in such a long time and wanted to take advantage of the great price they had to stay the night here for a couple of days. This place is gorgeous! Has a pool table, a beautiful hangout area and an exercise room. Great presentation. The room is a bit odd, the room is huge, it feels half empty and really lacks storage. No microwave either. Part of the blinds didn't work, the door was already opened before I even walked into the room, there was no "do not disturb" sign, broken hangers too. Breakfast was okay but nothing crazy. Parking lot was mostly empty. There's great things to do in walking distance which makes this hotel a prime location. It's an okay place worth checking out. read more

Made a reservation with the Tru by Hilton in Lawrence, Kansas through the Hilton Honors app. The reservation was confirmed, and my credit card was charged. Upon arriving to check in, the desk clerk told me they had no rooms. I asked that the room charge be refunded, and the desk clerk said she could do nothing about it. Though this is a Hilton property, she referred to Hilton Honors as a third party and said I would have to pursue reimbursement from them. I called Hilton Honors Customer Care who disputed the desk clerk's claim that they were a third party. The Customer Care representative tried to contact the hotel, but no one would answer the phone. The credit card charge has still not been reversed, and no one in Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. has taken ownership of the issue, so I've turned the dispute over to my credit card company. read more

My first visit to "Tru" branded Hilton property. It is Hilton's hipster value brand. This property is new and the design motif is a blend of modern, hipster island vibe meets Playskool ... and generally succeeds. Lots of pastels and big prints. The staff is upbeat, knowledgeable and attentive. The room is (almost) fully equipped ... iron & ironing board, refrigerator, small desk surface and a 55" flat screen TV. Plenty of electrical outlets are located high off the floor for easy access and each outlets include a pair of integrated USB ports. What is missing? Coffeemaker. Grrrr. Worthy of a 1-star demerit. Many nearby restaurants. Also a terrific, upscale market with a wide selection of prepared foods is located in the plaza next door. Will I return? Yes, but I am bring a large travel mug to minimize my trips to the lobby for coffee. read more

We have been coming to Tru since right after they opened a few years ago. I was so disappointed this time seeing the shower is such bad shape, wallpaper with stuff smeared all over in the restroom. They don't have all the amenities that normal Hilton brands but it was close and a little less in cost(not much) I always plan out track and field season when schedules are posted so I had this hotel booked a few times they May of next year. After seeing the room in the mess, the mold in the showe or whatever black growth it is..I went and canceled all my stays for next year. I'll stay somewhere else since they are not taking care of the property. read more

I don't quite understand what Hilton is going for with this "brand" of hotel. Getting back to basics? Bare minimum amenities? The lobby's Nickelodeon gameshow decor screams "we're trying to save a buck and profit while you pay a regular rate". The room had basement vibe with its linoleum faux wood flooring, metal pipe shelf in place of a closet, metal grate table over the AC/heater, minimalist desk chair (only chair in the room). Thin mattress upon a platform bed, chintzy mattress topper as your comforter? With a paper thin duvet thrown atop. Cheap cheap cheap. I mean, it's a place to lay your head for the night and it wasn't filthy. read more

If you like a modern minimalist hotel this one's for you. Rooms are clean but not your normal rooms: no carpet, no dresser, no coffee maker, no cups (except bathroom), no microwave, and the smallest refrigerator possible with no settings to keep your food cold. The bathroom has a nightlight so if you don't close the door it keeps the room lit up. The door has multiple holes underneath the door (assuming for safety) which lets the hallway light in all night. The blackout blinds worked perfectly but pointless since there were so many other light sources coming into the room. The lobby was unique if you plan to hang out there as opposed to your room. The only water and ice available is outside the gym. Breakfast: Don't eat the oatmeal unless you like it hard as a rock. The toasting option leaves your bread little more than warm toast with no visible way to adjust the settings, I'm assuming you would need to send your bread through 2x if you like it even slightly toasted, 3x if you like color and crunch. Don't stay at this hotel!!! I would have given them less than one (1) star on this review, but that was not an option. I checked in on September 8, 2023 and immediately did not have a good feeling as the staff at the front desk were rude. When they told me what my room was, I asked if I could get a room on a lower floor and they said no, that if I had wanted to change my room, I should have asked for it when I saw the room number on my confirmation email, first mistake, that was not "TRU," there is no room number given when you get a confirmation email. Second mistake, my confirmation email, did show that I would have a king bed, I did not. As I was preparing to eat my dinner, in my room, I noticed something on the counter by the TV, it was a ROACH. I captured it in a napkin and took it to the front desk to tell the staff, now they would need to find me another room. I mistakenly thought I had squished the roach in the napkin, but I was wrong, when I opened the napkin to show them the dead roach, it jumped onto the counter, they both screamed and said, "take it outside," which I immediately did and apologized letting them know I thought it was dead. Third, fourth, and fifth mistakes: they gave me another room, no one offered to help me move my stuff; they did not offer me any discount on my room; and again, I did not get a king bed. Last mistake: I sent an email to Hilton Corporate and although they said they would respond in three (3) days, it's been one (1) week and I have heard nothing from them. The actually facility was nice but it was the "little things" that left a lot to be desired. It was Graduation weekend at the University of Kansas and the hotel charged accordingly...$400/night for two nights and we needed two rooms...$1600 total. This is a typical travel tactic for high volume dates; it is what it is. The issues surfaced at check-in; we arrived at 2:40pm and they wouldn't let anyone check in until 3pm. Again, this is common practice, however, a little flexibility would've gone a long way because our family along with 6 others were on a tight time schedule due to preset Graduation ceremonies, etc. It's not like we wanted 10am check-in, but 20 minutes early? It sounds trivial but was a huge inconvenience. Once we checked in, the room was FRIGID. I like cool, but it was crazy cold. We asked at the front desk and they had no idea why the thermostat wasn't working and didn't know how to fix it. The end. When we turned on the TV, we were unable to get most stations and when we inquired at the front desk, we were told to play around with the wires behind the TV...what???? We're not TV repair people. We watched Netflix on my iPad. We asked for more towels and we were allowed one more....there were two of us in the room. The oatmeal at breakfast was cold, there were barely any utensils to use and no one seemed to care. Obviously they knew they were going to be busy but didn't prepare for the situation. Absolutely ridiculous; I realize that none of this was life threatening but for $1600, i expected courteous, knowledgeable and efficient service. Ugh read more

d like to take a moment to share our unbelievable experience staying at the Tru by Hilton in Lawrence, KS from 6/15/23-6/18/23 with you. Unfortunately, this hotel's name couldn't further misrepresent the quality of stay our softball family experienced from the moment we arrived on Thursday, 6/15/23, until the moment we walked out of the door on Sunday, 6/18/23, shortly before 10:00 AM. Being a Hilton rewards member, we were able to check in on the app on Thursday morning; however, when we arrived shortly after 3:00 pm, we were told our room wasn't ready. While waiting for our room to become available, we noted on the app that our room rate was wrongly charged. The reservation confirmation we received on 2/25/23 and 5/31/23 showed that we would be charged $117 on 6/15/23 and $161 for 6/16-6/17/23; however, the rate on the app on 6/15/23 showed we would be charged $175 for 6/15/23, $209 for 6/16/23, and $229 for 6/17/23. This was brought to the manager, Elizabeth Craft's, attention and corrected once she saw our reservation confirmation; however, we still have a pending charge on our credit card for $818.37. We will continue to monitor our credit card to ensure we are only charged what our reservation confirmation shows. Unfortunately, this was the case for all 9 of our families. There was a 10th family that had reservations but didn't arrive until after 11:00 pm after driving for 9 hours and was told the hotel was overbooked and there were no rooms available for the remainder of the weekend. Fortunately, they were able to stay with another family and got a reservation at the DoubleTree on Friday for the weekend. Unfortunately, this wasn't the only issue we had during our stay. Thursday night, we noticed our sink faucet was loose and not tightened down. Friday morning it was warm and humid in our room and we noticed our air conditioning wasn't working properly. The thermostat was set to 62 and the room temperature was 74. My husband informed the front desk about the issues and was told that they didn't know if maintenance would be in but if they were, they would have them look at it. We later discovered that we weren't the only ones that were without properly functioning air conditioning. Another family in 207 and 307 were without as well. Friday night when we returned to our room from being outside for 10 hours in 87+ degree weather, we noticed the air was still not working properly and the faucet hadn't been fixed. My husband went down to request new bedding and towels and to let them know that nothing had been fixed. He was offered a fan. The family staying in 307 checked in on Friday and was informed that the air conditioning being down had been a known issue. When questioned why they weren't informing guests at the time of booking or checking in, they were told that they didn't think it would be that warm outside. Each of us, along with other hotel guests, was offered a small Lasko fan as a resolution because there was no telling whether maintenance would be in or not. The family in 307 was moved to another room. Management was not available or on-site all weekend when asked, which is unacceptable for an establishment that is fully booked for a weekend. In addition, there were times when only one staff member was working during shifts, which is completely unsafe. On Sunday morning, our family went down for breakfast at 8:00 am and they were out of bagels, English muffins, and orange juice. We were told that someone forgot to take the bagels out of the freezer so they were currently thawing. At 8:20, one of the softball girls went to make pancakes, the machine had a sign on it and was told they were out of batter. This is unacceptable with a hotel full of people and 2 hours of breakfast left. When the young lady at the front desk was asked when the manager would be in, we were told she "didn't know." The manager, Elizabeth Craft, arrived shortly before 9:00 AM. Most of our families went to speak with her about their dissatisfaction with our stay. Never once did management take accountability or responsibility for any of the issues, instead, she placed the blame on everyone else and told our families we were liars. She stated that she was never informed of the issue with the air conditioning through the weekend but she didn't believe us because the units were all brand new and there was "no way they weren't working." She went to check our rooms with another employee. When she came back down, she claimed the air was working but that the wall unit was broken and not correct. Again, telling us we were lying. Fortunately, our visit was so dysfunctional that I took time and date-stamped pictures of our room before we left, which included the thermostat and faucet. I am more than happy to share them with you and anyone else that would like to see them. At one point, she offered to comp part of our stay for the faucet but not the air that she claimed was working. Continues in photos. read more

We needed a couple nights while house repairs were done. I'm not impressed. Registration staff was not welcoming or very helpful. Room was clean if you didn't look in the corners. our faucet was not attached to the sink but did work. The entire property looked and felt cheap and unimaginative. Free breakfast was worth every penny- pancake maker and milk pitcher didn't work. No staff. Front desk staff hiding. No eggs in the bin marked eggs, plain cheerios in honey nut bin. It's modern, funky, and clean. It's also very small for a guest room in the Hilton brand. I can understand that for maybe a Tru in a city but this is clearly a newer hotel with a modern floor plan that was just designed to save space and make you wonder why the room is so tiny. Love that they have the digital key so I don't have to interact with humans. But if I did have to, they seem friendly enough. Free parking and decent food options around the hotel. Second time we have tried this place. First time they couldn't Even let us in the room not even with the master key so at 2 AM we had to go find another hotel room that was the first experience. The second experience was July 30th. We Checked in and left we didn't go check the room which we should've we got to hotel late Only to find a rattling air conditioner all night long and the door would not shut unless you lift it up on it and literally pushed as hard as you can to shut it I can't believe that nobody had told them prior about the door. The floors are so thin you can hear people walking above you. If you want a good nights sleep this is NOT the hotel for you. Upon check out I wanted to use a different credit card the gentleman behind the desk didn't know how to do that so he called the manager the manager try to teach him how to do it I was standing there for 10 minutes and they still could not give me a receipt with my new credit card on it so I told her to send it via email I got home today check my email and they still have the wrong card on the receipt and they have three authorizations two on the wrong credit card one on the correct credit card I will not be staying there again they have no clue as to what they're doing and they've been in business for at least two years now. read more

Rooms are not huge but not small. Showers have awesome pressure and they use refillable shampoo, soap and conditioner. No throw away plastic bottles. Beds are firm and AC works really well. Breakfast is included. Standard Hilton breakfast with waffles, eggs sausage and cereal. Very family friendly with a pool table and kid games offered in a large open area behind the front desk. Staff is friendly and handled any issue we had promptly. read more

We usually stay at Tru Hilton's when we are on the road. The one in Lawrence KS was good except the floors of the elevator were filthy. The rooms we have no complaint at all. But the elevator had old spills that had dirt and sticky on them. The thing that got me was that it was like that at night when we checked in and the same when we left in the morning. Took them 4 hours to put me in a room after they had "lost my reservation".. didn't end up getting into my room until 11:30 pm when I had to be up at 5:00am!!! after asking multiple times if they had rooms and being told no, I complained to customer service who told me that they had plenty of rooms available. I was then told to make another reservation 2 hours after the start of all this and AMAZINGLY A ROOM WAS AVAILABLE!! But not after charging me 40$ more than me first agreed upon price.. a heavy brotha at the front was completely unhelpful and actually stopped helping me multiple times throughout the process. Next morning I asked for a late checkout, as I was running a camp across the street. And it wouldn't be done until 2 o clock. I half expected them to meet me somewhere in the middle and let me have a late checkout due to how awful my experience was to just get into a room. And due to "house cleaning issues" I was unable to have a late checkout as well. All in all an awful experience . Just because you have a pool table and nice chairs doesn't mean you get to completely lack customer service. I would choose anywhere over this place purely for how they treat people. If I could give them a 0 I would. They are lucky to have such a location or they wouldn't be open for very long. read more

I love this property and I love that is is clean, great bedding, cool lobby and EXCELLENT work out room. But most best is staff-- Brandon served up some great LAVAZZA coffee and breakfast. He is the front desk/manager and runs a great ship. There are fun happy murals on the walls and THERE ARE DOGS! that stay here. HOW FREAKIN FUN!!! I take advantage of the Lawrence aquatic center right behind the property too. Good quick swim ($5) helps when I am driving across the GREAT AMERICAN MIDDLE-WEST! This hotel was pretty nice. Easy check in, Covid protocols were followed, for the most part. However, and this didn't really bother me but might bother others, they normally put up the sticker to indicate the room is clean, etc. I was told on the app that the room was ready. When I went upstairs, there was no sticker. I went back downstairs and asked if the room was truly ready. They said their system indicated the room had been cleaned the day before. Came a couple a days early for Graduation.. stayed 5 days total and never once had an issue that wasn't resolved with in seconds. Extremely clean, staff very friendly,courteous. Eco friendly. We travel usually twice per month stay in a real mix of hotels so I can be picky. This is a simple hotel with fewer bells and whistles ie no closets in room but ample hanging space. No mints or turn down service but clearly met our needs. Buffet breakfast with killer waffles. Rooms were quiet. read more

A Tru by Hilton hotel. Not a typical Hilton experience, but more like a youth hostel. Yes the hotel is brand new and very modern, but the wow stops there. The rooms are tiny! And when I say tiny, I mean dorm tiny. There is hardly any room around the bed, no place to put your luggage, let alone your clothes, and aside from a tiny refrigerator, there aren't even pictures on the walls. There are no dressers or drawers for your clothes and they only offer a curved rod in a corner for you to hang your items up. If you are to open up your luggage, not that there is anywhere to put it other than the bed, you would have no place to walk. The bathroom is big compared to the room and very clean, but there again stops the wow. It was glacial in my bathroom this morning and I discover that there is no heat or a/c heating or cooling the bathroom; just a fan. The beds are comfortable though basic, and the linens are some kind of weird microfiber, not cotton. There is an option of feather pillows or lumpy foam pillows. Opt here for the feather, if I were you. My son and I stayed here for a meet, and we found the room cramped and constraining for the two of us in one room. There are wall mounted soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotions. What kind? Who knows. They smell like dish soap, so maybe that's what's in them. So now on to the breakfast. Because of the watery eggs, bizarre chicken maple breakfast sausage, even more bizarre malted vanilla waffles shaped like boats and with nothing to fill the boat, I would pick another place to have breakfast. Again, this had the feel of a youth hostel or dorm situation, not a Hilton Hotel. I have has better breakfasts at Super 8 motels. I really so believe this hotel is better suited to a single man or single woman, but definitely not a family. I would also limit my stay here to one to two nights, owning to the fact that there is absolutely nowhere to put clothing and there is so little room in the room all together. The hotel is pet friendly, though I don't know where you would put your pet or a kennel and the floors in every room are hard surfaced. Yep, there is no carpets, except in the halls. All in all it is clean and new, but I personally will not stay here or at a Tru by Hilton again. read more
