That's their food now, I guess ‍. Convenient location: Centrally located and close to where I needed to be. Friendly staff: Everyone I interacted with was kind, helpful, and welcoming. Hotel condition: I get that this region doesn't offer many 4-star hotels, but even by 3-star standards, this place felt a bit aged and run down. Breakfast spread: Surprisingly solid. Good variety and quality for a complimentary breakfast. Bottom line: Staff and breakfast were the highlights, but the ant situation and overall wear-and-tear of the hotel made this a disappointing stay. I stayed at this hotel while working in McAllen for 3 weeks. I love the layout of the building where all of the rooms line the 4 sides of the structure and in the center is a kind of hub where the restaurant, bar, and social areas are. They have a great indoor pool with a small connected outdoor seating patio. They have a hot tub and the pool is slightly warmed so its great in all weather! The down sides are that there is no free breakfast and most of the food onsite is quite expensive. I would definitely stay here again! read more

I'll start with the good - decent breakfast and friendly customer service. All staff were friendly and accommodating. The rest of the stay was marred by a bedbug scare, a room that smelled like cigarette smoke, and a lot of garbage. The rooms are poorly lit. Only one window which is hogged by the bedroom, and the area for the living room/work space is dark. Could use more light. The rooms are large, but not in great shape. The fridge in my room reaked of the last guest's smelly take out. The common areas constantly had guests' takeout containers discarded on the carpet, I guess because the rooms are not cleaned every day? Not sure why but this was constant. See my pictures. There was dirt and rust stains on the walls and ceilings, especially in the bathrooms. Worst of all - I woke up at about 4:30am because I was in pain from a prior exercise accident, and my partner noticed a bedbug crawling near my head on the pillow when he turned on the light! Truly awful. We checked the rest of our things and thankfully no other bedbugs made their way into our items, so it seems like it was left by a previous guest. The mattresses have no protection underneath, so this was a very scary moment! The only person at the desk at that time of night quickly found me another room, but that room smelled like cigarettes. She kindly moved us again, to a room that smelled fine but was a bit dirty - see the pictures of the mold stains on the wall. I figure most of the hotel is in a bit of disrepair, so I stayed the rest of the night there until I could leave the next day. The staff were appropriately apologetic and seemed genuinely surprised, as if it is not a common occurrence for a bed bug. So perhaps it was something left by a prior guest. But I had to review as the rest of the hotel is in need of some TLC! I expect a bit more comfort and hygiene for a Hilton. read more

My last review here was 4 years ago and I wanted to update and say it's still a great spot. This and embassy suites are in my option the best hotels in McAllen. Some of the furniture in the bedroom is really dated and doubletrees are hot or miss, some are great some are really run down but this is definitely one of the better ones. read more

I've stayed here multiple times. This was my first time back since COVID. Nothing seems to have changed. (That's a good thing.) I believe this used to be an Embassy Suites. It definitely has that interior vibe: all suites, open atrium in the middle. The rooms, especially the living rooms, are incredibly dark, though. Where my suite was positioned, I got no light from the atrium--not that it was very bright either. If they could brighten the room up, I'd consider the fifth star. The fifth star would also be considered if there was an omelet chef. I do appreciate the shuttle service from the airport. Currently, it runs 0600-2300. That barely worked for me, but it worked. So, I was happy. There's nothing spectacular about the hotel, but there's also nothing terribly bad about it either. I'll likely stay here next time I'm in town. read more

This hotel definitely needs a renovation, everything is rusty and old. The ceilings are falling down, the wall paper is coming off. Very sad cause the staff is nice but Hilton should really do something about this location. Shut it down and renovate. Pics attached are just a few. I will not be staying here anymore. Not a bad property, overall. Its slightly dated, and could use some TLC in a few areas. I was here for a couple of days in The Valley for business, and gave the DoubleTree a try. Here's my take: PROS: The customer service here is very good, from the front desk agent, room service agent, and morning breakfast staff. My 6th floor room was clean throughout, as well as quiet. The atrium area by the bar is lively on some nights with live concerts, which isn't all bad (they usually end around 8-9:00 PM. The property does have an ambiance to it with its atrium furnishings, as well as a building style that seems to convey that it used to be an Embassy Suites prior (not that there is anything wrong with that). Starbucks is downstairs adjacent next to the bar. Let me repeat that in case you skimmed over it- STARBUCKS IS DOWNSTAIRS NEXT TO THE BAR!!! What's not to love about that arrangement? CONS: Parking here is confusing. There is a garage, yet I wasn't sure if it was from the hotel, or other businesses within the area. No signage to indicate that it belonged to the DoubleTree, only to say that some parking spaces were deemed "private business." The parking around the front of the hotel is also tight, and slightly limited. Breakfast at any hotel is a pretty good value (between $12-15, depending on where you go). At this property, it was so-so. Too spicy with the sausage & omelettes, and too bland with the potatoes and eggs. All depends on the chef that day, like anywhere else. While the room service agent was professional, the margarita or Italian-thin crust pizza that I ordered was anything but. More like chewing gum with pepperoni, sausage & onion, given how chewy and under-baked the dough was. Just not very good in-house pizza, in my opinion. Also, the elevators on this property run at a ridiculously stupid slow pace. I feel that I aged a year every time that I get off. I also found the property to be slightly on the dark side with its lighting in some areas. It may be good for the honeymooners and other romantics, yet if wanting to read something? Slightly hard on the eyes. Altogether, this is a good property that could use a small bit of work done to it, but not much. I tend to think that the best hotels in The Valley are in Mission, McAllen, South Padre Island, and maybe Edinburg. McAllen seems to have always something going on in close proximity to this hotel, so there is a bit of value in staying here. read more

The employees make this hotel!! Anytime there is an issue they are quick to fix. The beds are super comfortable, the rooms are large and the shower pressure is great! What absolutely makes this hotel is Ruben, he is one of the ones assisting with breakfast. He is always smiling, eager to help with friendly service.. He consistently goes above and beyond. I had not been here in 8 months and he still remembered my name! He remembers that I like my coffee in a mg not a paper cup. Do not hesitate to stay here and tell Ruben Cynthia said hello when you see him. read more

This Hotel is in a great location and the facility is very nice and clean. The bartender was attentive and in great spirits! The not so great part started at checkin. Checking in the young girl at the desk was very friendly, but had a question about our reservation that required the Manager. The answer included us being reprimanded for incorrectly making reservations. (Explaining the government discount) I use my husband's discount regularly. It was warm in the room, the air conditioner did not go lower than 67. Finally after we ate breakfast checked out, come to find out the breakfast wasn't free. I've stayed in hotels in my life time and breakfast is usually included. If not there is a sign. Hilton has such wonderful hotels, disappointed that this was one of them. read more

We stayed here for a work trip while traveling. The reason I am giving this hotel 5 stars is because of the incredible customer service we received. We stayed here for the week and one night, after a fabulous dinner nearby at Salome on Main, and we ended up purchasing pints of mole to take home. The hotel was so nice to let us store the mole in their freezer for our departure day. On the day we were leaving we asked for the mole, but the hotel staff couldn't find it. There is a barista that works in the Starbucks area of this hotel and she had been pleasure to chat with while getting our coffee each morning, her name is Beatriz. She knew that we were disappointed to have lost the mole. Fast forward to 30 mins later, I noticed a few missed calls on my phone. When I answered, it was Beatriz "Julie, I am in my car driving to the airport. Where are you, I have found the mole!" Any other person would've moved on and not thought twice about the lost mole, but she not only searched after we left and found the mole, she got in her car to hand deliver it before we flew out to go home to California and Florida. I honestly cannot remember a time we received such kindness and amazing customer service. This will be our go to hotel when we stay at the Valley. Everyone in the hotel was lovely, but Beatriz went above and beyond! Thank you again. read more

Go someplace else. I was treated to this stay for a business interview. They knew I was coming with my husband and 2 small children. I was told it was great for families. The room itself needs work. The wallpaper is peeling everywhere. There is rust. The drawers were dirty. The furniture was chipped. There was only an office chair available making putting a booster seat anywhere for the baby to eat very difficult. They wouldn't give us any other chairs. The doors are SO LOUD. Going in an out of any room wakes the kids up. They didn't have cribs available unlike just about every other hotel. It's supposed to be good for families but there wasn't a bathtub just a shower. Again, 2 small children. They need baths. The worst part: We found a dead cricket under the table with a USB cable that I can only assume belonged to whoever stated here before us, which means they didn't vacuum. I complained. They came up and vacuumed. And then my baby was crawling around and ended up with a pill in his mouth that he found on the floor. We're not on any medications. So even after complaining, they didn't vacuum well. And this is with covid. So who knows if they actually cleaned anything. Scary. The staff seemed nice. Offered snacks from the gift shop in lieu of the cookies since we have gluten allergies. I ordered 2 well done burgers from the 2nd street bistro and they arrived PINK on the inside. Last I checked, that's not well done. Overall a bad experience. If I paid for this stay, I'd be demanding a refund. But since it was company dollars, I just know I'll never come back. read more

This is a decent hotel if you're needing to stay in the area. They have a small lobby area when you walk in. If you go past that it opens to a giant atrium where there's a bar and restaurant. There's 3 elevators to take you up to rooms which helps because they move really slow. The rooms are a good size. There's a small livingroom with a kitchen/bar area. The tv in our livingroom area never worked the entire time we stayed. The bedrooms have two double beds in them. They're actually pretty comfy! The pillows however were not. They were the kind that look really fluffy and soft but the minute you lay down on them they flatten like a pancake. The bathrooms are tiny. No more than one person can stand at the sink at a time. There is a shower with a sliding door and it's a tight squeeze to step over the toilet to get into the shower. The restaurant serves a bed dry breakfast that had a good mix of items. It doesn't open till 7am though. So if you have an early flight you may just need to grab food elsewhere. Overall this was a nice place to stay. Nothing overly exciting but not overly priced and comfy. read more

The rooms were kind of musty and my carpet was almost damp or something. Dishes were in the hall for our entire 3day stay. Service was excellent otherwise. Would say one of the better hotels that serve breakfast. Loved the view coming down the elevator. Not sure if I would stay again or not. read more

Couldn't have had a better stay! The rooms were always so clean. The restaurant food was always amazing. The customer service was phenomenal! The pool was nice! The workout area could use a few weights but other than that it was fine. I took the shuttle many many times to and from work and the ride was always so pleasant. From Don Elizeo, Eddie, Carlos, Johnny, Beatriz, Marcos, all the ladies at the reception area, literally everyone was so sweet and welcoming. HOTEL: 3 stars I had to travel to the Rio Grande Valley for work recently. My colleagues and I stayed at this hotel. It has the usual lay out with an open lobby all the way to the ceiling several stories up, with suites on the perimeter. The suites are not fancy, but are functional for work travel. The front half of the suite is a small living space with a desk, lamp, and chair, along with a television, microwave, and a small refrigerator. The second half of the suite contains the bathroom with a stand up shower, and the bedroom. This hotel is showing signs of age, but was clean and comfortable. HOTEL STAFF: 5 stars People in the Rio Grande Valley are just lovely. So not surprisingly, the hotel employees I encountered at check-in and at check-out were very friendly and efficient. We were also given a shuttle ride to a nearby local restaurant by a very friendly driver. The highlight of staying in this hotel was getting coffee in the morning. There is a small coffee station in the lobby that serves Starbucks products. The lady who was running the counter that day (10/30/18), I believe her name was Beatriz, was a true delight. She was attentive, friendly, and competent. She absolutely kicked my day off the right way, and DoubleTree should be proud to have an employee like her. read more

If I could give no stars today I would ! I have never had as bad of service as today and I eat out daily ! I was visiting Mc Allen today for work so I stayed at the doubletree hotel near the La Plaza mall. I decided to eat dinner at The hotel bar around 7:45 tonight . There were 4 girls working behind the bar they were dressed festively with st party's day gear since today is st Patrick's day . I sat down at the bar and was not even approached or greeted once , I started to time it and it took almost 10 minutes for someone to approach me and when she did she just slammed a napkin down in front of me and walked away . I finally wave someone down to order a drink and was never approach after that . I literally sat there from 7:45 to 8:30 empty glass and all still no one checked up on me ... To me this makes no sense considering how small the bars is and there are 4 girls working behind it . 8:35 I ask for a menu to order food and one of the girls gives me a menu 9:00 no one has come back by to take my order 9:05 - I wave one of the girls down again to order food and another drink . 9:30 the food comes out and the girl just throws it on the counter and walks away 9:40 I wave someone down again and ask for the check . THIS WAS THE ABSOLUTE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD EVER AT A HILTON HOTEL ! I stay in hiltons on a weekly bases and it's very disappointing to see that this hotel could care less about the customers experience ! I travel here weekly for work but don't think I will stay at this hotel ever again , I'd rather go to Hilton garden inn than to come here ! This is a great place to stay for business travel. The building is a little dated, but had a great vibe and charm. The girls that run the bar were all friendly, the front desk staff was always great about helping me with any requests I had, and the beds & comforters were heavenly. I'm going back in a week and may shove one in my bag on my way home. (I'm just kidding to anyone who actually pays attention to these). And the cookie!! You can never be upset while nibbling one of those double tree cookies! The menu is pretty good too. I ended up having to eat at the hotel more than I normally would have liked to, but everything I had was great or at the very least didn't make me regret eating at the hotel like the Hyatt San Antonio I went to after. The only complaint I had is they are not super clear about when your breakfast is included in the rate and sometimes the restaurant staff just didn't charge you for it. I get they are trying to be nice, but it's kind of annoying if you don't get charged for breakfast most of your stay, then one day get a $17 bill because someone else is working that day. The breakfast is actually pretty good most of the time as far as hotel buffets go, but definitely not worth that much, and even especiallier not in McAllen where you can go to any taqueria nearby and get a good breakfast for $5-10. Having said that, I'm looking forward to my next visit there. :) read more

Terrible hotel. Very disappointed in the service and the run down rooms. Upon checking in the front desk employee gave no direction as to location of elevators and did not provide the famous cookies and seemed rushed and dismissive. He made no mention that room housekeeping was "by request only." We got back to our room in the evening and the room had not been cleaned, we had no fresh towels, and our bed had not been made. We were referred to a note stapled to the hotel key cardholder regarding the housekeeping by request only policy. Who reads the keycard holder??? Will NEVER stay here again. Does NOT meet Doubletree Hotel standards. read more

Pros and cons Pros: Atrium is large- great space for meetings. Food and bar at the "Bistro" is actually pretty good. Great happy hour prices. Hotel is large. Located near the medical center as well as the airport. Had an issue during the stay and the customer service was great. Manager followed up immediately to try and resolve the issue. Customer service like that is hard to find. Cons: Rooms are not upgraded. Very loud- both from noise inside the atrium as well as loud road noise. Bathrooms are tiny. Sheets and pillows have a mildew smell- rooms just seem very old. Overall- for the price Id rather stay at the new Embassy Suites by the convention center. read more

Just got back from a 4 night stay here. Bed was very comfortable, the balcony to the room was a nice touch. My room was very spacious. I'd likely stay here again if I was in the area and the price was right. Breakfast was alright since the eggs were not bagged or powdered. The bathroom in the room was the size of a restroom stall in a truck stop! I'm was awful how small the bathrooms were in the hotel room. I couldn't shut the door without straddling the commode. The Starbucks lady is the morning was amazingly friendly! I'm tempted to give 2 stars cause the bathroom situation. Other than that it's a little dated but decent. read more

I try not to rate certain establishments like hotels if I can on my first visit because I understand sometimes things can happen and I feel like it would be unfair to just rate them in that one bad experience. Well I've now stayed here a few times and each time I have been thoroughly disappointed. I'll start with the positives. 1. It's one of the higher end hotels in McAllen of the Hilton brand. Well supposedly. 2. Very close to the airport, mall and food attractions. 3. Breakfast is decent and free if you are a diamond member. 4. Decent pool/ hot tub and an "ok" gym. 5. All suite like rooms. Cons: 1. Older and not updated 2. Furniture never looks clean in the rooms Now my experiences, which is why I will not stay here again: 1. My first stay the room had a funny smell and I couldn't figure it out. The sink looked like it hadn't been cleaned either. Turned out to be a plumbing issue because the next morning as I was getting ready I saw the black yuck spilling into the sink from the pipes. Gross! 2. Second time, my suite had a large, thick 5inch roach in it! 3. My third room made a lot of noise from the plumbing. Those are enough for me. I won't come back. I use to previously stay at the Homewood suites every time I came and never had a problem there. Not to mention it was only like 80 something a night. This hotel is always around 100 something a night and is suppose to be a better one, well its not. Get it together double tree. read more

Very dirty and worn Hotel, including ketchup on walls, smeared dead bugs on restroom walls. Carpet in room was damp and sticky with gum stained. Couch had unknown white colored stain. Towels had brown stains. Advertised lunch, but when we went to eat, they weren't serving lunch. Balcony area full of cigarette butts. We will not return next year. read more

Stayed here and arranged a block of rooms for close friends and family for a surprise wedding. They arranged and kept track of everything perfectly! Fastest check-in around, friendly service. Food was surprisingly good (but I am super picky on hotel food, in general). For me, the service and cleanliness was most important and they nailed them. Thanks again! Hotel may not be newest, but it was serviced well and had zero issues with anything WRT rooms and such. read more

Had a very bad experience. Good thing we only booked one night. First of all, I am not sure why they call themselves a 4 star hotel. This is not what you expect from a 4 star hotel. This hotel is so outdated. The rooms look old. The wallpaper is peeling, the bathrooms are tiny and there are stains on the walls. Also, the customer service is not accommodating. The ladies in the front desk, including the manager seem to not care, they are not helpful, and make you feel unwelcome. Look some place else. You are better off looking for a 3 star hotel in the area. I have stayed in 3 star hotels that are much better than this so called "4 star". read more

This is one of the best hotels to stay at in the Valley. The staff is super friendly and they make you feel at home. After three months, the breakfast was getting too consistent being the same everyday. I spoke to the head Chef and asked if he could incorporate a few different items just to change it up. He surprised me with new items everyday. The breakfast is different each and every day. It just took asking the Chef one time and he went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. This is true customer service. They really take care of the frequent guests because this is our home away from home. The front desk staff as well as the management are super and top notch. I really enjoyed staying here. Every place will have its ups and downs, but ultimately it comes down to service and comfort that make all the difference. This is a must stay hotel. read more

Management has yet to contact me. They do not answer the phone. I stayed over Labor Day weekend in a dirty room. What did they offer me? A thin sheet to cover myself because they stated they didn't have any extra comforters. The lady who came to replace the sheets was embarrassed and stated she was sorry and it wasn't her and she wouldn't risk losing her job by not cleaning the room. This is disgusting and I would not recommend staying here. read more

I was at the hotel for a conference last week and am a nursing mother. I was very disappointed that they were unable to accommodate my request for a place to pump. The front desk clerk was nice, but said she could only offer the staff restroom. Granted, this was better than the public restroom, but come on Doubletree...you can do better! I'm at a different Doubletree this week in Austin for a conference and was pleased to be offered a private office and given a sign to post outside indicating "Nursing mother, please knock". If the hotel is going to be hosting conferences, especially those attended by female physicians who are big proponents of breastfeeding, then you need to be equipped with such requests! Unacceptable, do better please! The staff at Starbucks was incredible though and helped negate my frustrations. read more
