I first encountered Dr. Boyd about 4 years ago when my eldest daughter needed an emergency root canal. She was in the middle of finals at OSU when her tooth pain became unbearable. After being told to wait by another endodontist (she's waited this long, she can wait until Monday), Dr. Boyd saw her that day and did a painless root canal that fixed my daughter right up. Pain gone. Not being squeamish, I asked Dr. Boyd if I could sit in an watch the process. He let me and I was amazed at how he professionally and quickly performed the therapy on my daughter. He's clearly done thousands of root canals, and he explained to me in clear down-to-earth language what he was doing as he went along, completely demystifying the process for me. So when my dentist determined that I needed root canal therapy late last week (I'd been feeling pressure and temperature sensitivity in a tooth for a couple of weeks - best to get these things looked at - they never get better on their own), I asked for a referral to Dr. Boyd. He saw me the following Monday; I could wait a couple of days as the pain was still bearable and manageable by chewing on the other side of my mouth. After an evaluation, Dr. Boyd explained my options to me, taking into account my insurance and available benefits. I decided to go ahead with the treatment. Again, Dr. Boyd did a professional and painless job, leaving me with a temporary filling in the crown he had to drill through to get to the tooth's innards. I can again chew on that side using that tooth. Recovery has been smooth and virtually painless. He also used what seemed to me to be some newer technology on me that I don't remember being available when my daughter had her root canal a few years ago. His staff is quite business like and professional, making sure that they get paid. A root canal is not a warm and fuzzy experience and, hey, its a business. They offered me a 5% discount for payment by check or cash. I hadn't brought my check book and don't carry that kind of cash around, but they offered to take my credit card and not charge if I sent them a check within a week which included the 5% discount. I sent the check. This is not my first root canal. In the past, they have required two visits. Dr. Boyd did the whole job in one session, which makes an unpleasant necessity a bit more bearable. One thing common to all root canals is the gratitude for the relief from pain, and Dr. Boyd has provided that to both me and my daughter. I had to have a root canal and Dr. Boyd was highly recommended. I was not thrilled at the pain and cost of having this procedure done. The following is what I experienced. First of all, the staff was quite professional and friendly, I would guess that they were likely long term employees as they worked well as a team from the assistants to the bookkeeper. I (completely) hate shots however I never even felt the shots. I believe that they gelled (numb) the exact area before they injected their shots so I felt virtually nothing, with zero discomfort or pain. That in itself felt like a miracle. I do recall that they took their time in assuring a painless experience. Then Dr. Boyd came in and started his procedure. It was evident to me that he is very passionate about his work. It seemed to go very quickly and it took longer to get the shots then the procedure itself. The main reason that I am writing this because I have read a few negative reviews which I am certain that they are coming from pure delusion. I have a few friends that are dentist and they refer their root canal patients to Dr. Boyd because of his highly skilled and experienced practice, I also have learned that a large percentage of Dr. Boyd's work is fixing other dentist bad work. If you need a root canal...he's the one to call! I have already had more root canals in my life than I can accurately remember. Some of them were not as easy as they were recently with Dr. Boyd and his lovely staff. Here are the reasons I will return to him when the time comes: 1) Ease of scheduling an appointment that worked out with my availability. 2) Location was not hard to find, even though I am not familiar with Milwaukie, the directions I was given over the phone took me straight there without trouble. 3) Pleasant and professional welcome and check-in. 4) Kind and pleasant dental assistants who give virtually painless numbing shots. 5) Dr. Boyd himself is warm, concerned and has a great sense of humor. He kept asking how I was doing during the procedure -- and truth was I was just fine and didn't feel a thing. He talked me through the procedure to let me know what he was doing. Not necessary, but it showed that he cared about how I was feeling and did everything he could to put me at ease. 6) Follow-up. Dr. Boyd called me at home a couple of days later to see how I was doing. That was unexpected and appreciated. He clearly cares about the quality of his practice from every possible angle. Nobody wants a root canal, but when you need one it sure helps to go where they will treat you kindly and they really seem to know what they're doing. What more could anyone ask? read more

I took my elderly aunt in for a root canal last week. Dr. Boyd and his staff were outstanding. The office staff was courteous and professional. Auntie had light anesthesia and no pain following the procedure other than that evening - expected, slight tenderness. He saved her crown in the process so she didn't have to follow up with her general dentist for that additional expense. Dr. Boyd came out to the waiting room after he got the anesthesia started and reassured me that she was doing fine. After the procedure, he came out and spoke to me and explained in detail, exactly how the root canal went, and what to expect for her discharge instructions. He and his staff made sure she was comfortably seated in their wheel chair and had me drive my car around. They even loaded her into the car!! She was very pleased about their "top notch" (her words) service. The service was on a Friday morning, and he called Friday evening to check up on her. He also followed up Sunday with a phone call. I mean, how many physicians really do that these days?! At Dr. Boyd's request, she is to follow up in 6 months for an xray to check the status. This is at no additional expense. We saw NO evidence of the complaints posted here. Perhaps he took care of any staff that were an issue. All we experienced was caring professionalism. read more

On Thanksgiving, my morning started out with some pretty intense pain in my mouth. I was unable to reach my dentist until the following Monday, which totally sucked! On Monday, I was immediately referred to Dr. Boyd for a root canal. Dr. Boyd's office was able to get me in that day! I was pleased to know that I would be out of pain soon; however, I was extremely nervous to get a root canal. Sounds scary! When I got there, I was greeted by the receptionist and almost immediately brought back to the dreaded chair! As I was being prepped for my root canal, I started to panic a bit. I told the assistant that I didn't do well with procedures of this nature, so she started to help calm me. She told me it was going to be ok and that root canals aren't as bad as they sound. At this point Dr. Boyd came in and started to get to work. I was amazed at how fast, efficient and caring Dr. Boyd was! The guy could probably do a root canal in his sleep, he's that good!! This procedure was better than any filling I've ever had done! Why was I so nervous!! If you are afraid of the dentist or get worked up during a procedure of this nature, I would definitely recommend Dr. Boyd and his staff. Three things I really liked about my experience at Doctor Boyds office: 1. Dr. Boyd takes the time to explain everything to his patients. He answers any questions you might have about the procedures. You will feel reassured to know that you are in the hands of someone who has mastered the art of root canals. 2. The staff is very professional. They are able to give you an immediate and accurate quote for exactly how much the procedure will cost. I think this is VERY important. In the past, I have gone to a dentist who end up mailing a surprise bill two weeks later. And of course the bill seemed more expensive than I thought. This won't happen here. This office will let you know exactly what is going to be done, and exactly what it will cost. It is a very efficient and professional process. 3. The dental chairs face giant picture windows looking out to a very small lagoon. It is very peaceful to watch the ducks swimming by while you are getting drilled. It's a very unique office. So, if you need a root canal, go see Dr. Boyd. I was worried at first that his prices would be higher because he is a specialist. However his prices seem very competitive. Nobody wants to get a bad root canal. Do yourself a favor and have it done by the best. read more

It is hard to believe that a root canal should achieve "as good as it gets" status, but if you must have a root canal, then this is the place. I am PHOBIC (I cannot emphasize this enough) in the dental chair and my General Dentist sent me to Dr. Boyd for a root canal. Sitting in the lobby, I noticed a book of thank you cards that have been received over time; thicker than a phone book. I thought, "who sends a thank you card to their dentist?" Turns out, I do. Dr. Boyd has a very reassuring bedside manner; not only was I given instructions on how to alert his team to stop, he asked me how I was doing several times during the procedure. His team operates like a well oiled machine; the efficient use of their time keeps the whole process moving along and doesn't let you sit, wait and worry. They are not stingy on the locals either, so it really is quite a painless process. Dr. Boyd is also quite attentive about calling to follow up and insure that everything is healing nicely. He called me on the weekend, in fact, just to make sure I was healing alright. I hope I never have to see him again but if I need a root canal, I will insist on going back. read more

I am sorry to see some negative reviews here, because my experience this week was exactly the opposite. I came into the office with a difficult medical condition on top of a complex root canal condition. To make matters worse, I was on a time frame for my other medical condition. Dr. Boyd was reassuring on the phone before I even got there, was reassuring during the appointment, and called me today to see how I was doing. He made short work of what was otherwise a very painful and worrisome condition that had to be taken care of before I undergo treatment for the other condition. I have absolutely no residual pain, and the entire problem has been beautifully resolved. Moreover, I was treated with full courtesy by the staff; every question was answered, and I was more than impressed by the efficiency of the team. Every person knew what to do when, and there were no delays whatsoever. I am extremely grateful for the treatment I received, the speed with which it was provided, and the care evidenced by every member of the staff. Douglas Boyd, DMD and his staff completed a root canal and other related work in one, highly satisfactory visit yesterday. He was committed to getting a difficult job done correctly, the first time around. Dr. Boyd found the canals which another dentist could not, repaired a perforation caused by the other dentist and did all this in a manner which inspired confidence and trust. I appreciated the relaxing humor of Enid who competently administered the anesthetic for a pain free root canal and the steady work of Julie, Dr. Boyd's assistant. The office staff, Christina and Elki were warm and friendly, setting a positive tone for this visit. After the procedure, Dr. Boyd took the time to discuss what he had done and why. He even called at 8:30 last evening to find out how I was doing. Tooth #30 is doing well today with little swelling and only minor discomfort. When its neighbors require similiar attention, I will without doubt have that work done by Douglas Boyd, DMD and his staff. read more

I should have written this years ago. My dentist recommended Dr. Boyd for an extraction I needed to have. It was a back molar that had had a root canal a couple of decades prior. The dentist who did the root canal had left a broken piece of tool in the root. He then filled the canal and put on a crown. It was fine for a long time, but eventually I guess the foreign material corroded and leaked out the bottom of the root where it caused infection. Dr. Boyd agreed that the tooth had to come out. Then he shocked me by telling me that for an extra fee he could attempt to remove the tooth, quickly clean it up, and then put it back before the gum could close up the space. He said it may or may not work. He said he would guarantee the replacement for six months and provide free checkups of it over that time. It did last. Many are amazed when I tell them about this. He actually has provided additional follow up without charge. He is an amazingly talented and generous person. read more

I had a root Canal done at another establishment and I was having horrible after pain. I was referred to Dr Boyd. From my entrance to the waiting area I was greeted by the most courteous , helpful and happy staff. I got a same day appointment for a procedure. I was a nervous wreck as I hate the Dentist office. The Hygienist and Dental assistant were very caring, understanding and very reassuring. I am forty six years old and always dreaded that needle that is used to numb the area and this is the first time in my life I never felt it all " awesome job" ....Dr Boyd was very thorough and explained the procedure , he constantly asked if I was okay during the procedure if I was okay. I wish I could have given them 100 stars instead of five. I relaxed through the procedure The Doctor personally called me the next day to ensure I was okay and informed me , to feel free to call them if I had any further issues. My regular dentist referred me to Dr. Boyd, who squeezed me into his schedule the same day I lost a front tooth. Having had a root canal on that tooth 40 years prior, the area needed something other than a regular root canal. After the procedure, I was to return to my regular dentist a few days later for a temporary crown, but the tissue reacted adversely causing complications. Once again Dr. Boyd saw me immediately and fixed the problem. He has been a concerned, caring dentist, calling me to see how I was doing, had me do periodic check-ups to make sure the tissue was healing properly before and after the crown placement. His staff was fabulous, from the front desk to all the attending assistants who were gentle and caring, which is huge when you're having that kind of work done. I had an emergency root canal done and they were able to get me into their office within two days. Every single employee that was working was extremely kind, patient and empathetic. The dental assistants were very friendly and checked in consistently to see if I was ok throughout the procedure. Dr Boyd also consistently checked in with me to see if I was in any pain. As soon as I was done they gave me water and ibuprofen and explained everything carefully so I understood what to expect. He did request a follow up on six months that they do free of charge so they can make sure that everything is still going as planned. Two days after the procedure Dr Boyd personally called me and asked how I was doing and to not hesitate to ask if I had any additional questions and this wS also on a Sunday. I was referred to Dr. Boyd for evaluation of possible root fracture in tooth underlying a temporary crown when bite sensitivity would not calm down. I was extremely anxious..OK, flat scared...walking back to dental chair. His staff was very friendly and responsive to my concerns. To my great surprise, except for some inevitable discomfort during injections they managed to create a pain free experience. As soon as Dr. Boyd determined the tooth was not recoverable he limited his process which limited the costs. Then, his staff did a fantastic job of helping me move forward to the next phase in my dental treatment, fielding questions and relaying information back to my primary provider. I even got a courteous, professional follow up call from Dr. Boyd himself, rare in my experience for a specialist in the medical industry to take the time to make such a call personally! read more

GREAT JOB!!! OVERLY HAPPY PATIENT/CUSTOMER: I had a tooth (hot tooth) that was So Painful, I couldn't stand it. The intense pain went up into my head. I was referred to Dr. Douglas C Boyd, DMD, Endodontic, and I cannot tell you in words how great Dr. Boyd, his dental asst, and Dental Hygienists were, other than to say they were GREEEE.......AT, FANTASSSS.....TIC, TERRIFIC... etc. Dr. Boyd, DMD was very gentle, and skillful; his assistants were part of a great team whose sole focus was to get me out of extreme pain and better, WHICH THEY DID with Flying colors. Dr. Boyd (the miracle worker), You did a root canal on my tooth number 14 in June 2017. Willamette Dental had already attempted a root canal and preformed a surgery to snip off part of the root. Willamette Dental refused to attempt another root canal and said the tooth was cracked, the roots calcified beyond access, could not be saved, advised me to have it pulled and get an implant. I was referred to you for my friend Dr. Harry Chambers who told me you have success with difficult cases. When meeting with you, I was told me the tooth was not cracked and that you would be willing to do another root canal on the tooth. Over the course of four visits, Dr. Boyd expertly repaired the botched root canal of another. My pain was so severe on the first visit that Dr. Boyd quickly determined the source of my abscess, and then with perfect precision, drained the infection, prescribed antibiotics and set up successive appointments. He called me that night to see how I was. By the end of the following week, my tooth was re-treated and for the first time in two years, I have no pain or pressure in that area. The office sits next to a wetland and allows fascinating views of ducks and geese feeding on the vegetation right outside the treatment rooms. This is my second time seeing Dr Boyd and I am very happy with his work. His staff is very busy, but not so busy they forget you might just be a little nervous. Dr. Boyd told me what needed to be done and about how long it would take. He was true to his word and I really feel he cares about how you feel. He gave me a followup call the next day and after talking, he told me to come in and he would handle a small problem. About 5 minutes in chair and I left very happy.
