We were in the market for a small pied a terre in Manhattan. A busy and seasoned agent referred us to Claudia Hason at Douglas Elliman. As a former New Yorker I was out-of-touch with local real estate, and followed through with the referral. My first impression of Claudia was that she's young, not as experienced as her older colleagues. With that said, she did a great job as our agent. Claudia is responsive, recommending studio apartments that met our budget and criteria; she actually pre-screened a few units and was readily available on our limited trips to NY. (We're based in Pennsylvania.) Claudia is part of the successful Stanica team at Douglas Elliman. When there were contractual questions and issues germane to our purchase, Claudia got sage advice from Simona Stanica and other members of the team. We were in good hands. Your agent Jacob Lewis gave me a snarky & rude response when I informed him I no longer wanted to view an apartment which I mistakenly thought was a 1 bedroom. I explained that I mistakenly thought it was a 1 bedroom and that the price was way too high for a studio in that neighborhood. I was expecting a response along the lines of understanding of a simple mistake, accompanied by suggestions for other 1 bedrooms in a neighborhood that could be in my price range. Instead he said "You should probably try reading the description next time." What the ****? I replied to let him know my thoughts on his response but I also want the public to know. You know, you should always be kind to people because you really never know what they're going through. I'm going through some intense personal hardships including the death of a pet today & caretaking for my former partner who is going blind. Jacob Lewis's rudeness was not at all ok and made an already tough day just a little bit worse. Grace took all of her personal information and said she would be back to her the next day. She then totally ghosted her - no response to phone calls, emails, anything. Finally after contacting the CORPORATE office, who contacted Grace - she reached back out and said they selected another applicant without a guarantor. She still has the listing posted as active. I found a listing not directly from this realtor's website. It was for an apartment in the same neighborhood and the price range was about $400 more than my current place. I requested to view the apartment. The listing didn't mention any sort of income minimum or any details. I called the agent and he asked questions so I provided the details and my situation under receiving public assistance from the state/city. He was fine with the situation. Not a single problem mentioned the whole day. He then tells me to call him back because there may be a schedule for viewing the next day. I call him back and he has more info to ask. I spent my time consolidating paperwork to prove my income, my savings, my credit score, my ability to pay rent. He asked if anyone else is living with me. I told him my S/O. He doesn't have to sign the lease. My S/O made only $10k last year and is a recent graduate therefore he didn't work full time but he does now. I made this clear. However, my income on my own was way more than 40x the rent. After I spent time providing all this information, that schedule viewing or "appointment" he said he'll set up with me then became a sleazy "the owner doesn't find that your combined income is prospective for rent". What? Not only did I not get to look at the apartment after wasting my time, but making over 40x the rent in legal income isn't enough? Might I also note that legally, 2 adults are allowed to live in a 1-bedroom apartment so as long as the income is sufficient enough for rent. In fact, no utilities were included so it's not like the owner pays more. If you never provided an income requirement from the start, and then ask later on and I tell you I make an income over 40x the rent, why was I denied simply for VIEWING this apartment? I suspect this owner or this broker is discriminating or lying about something regarding the rental. The biggest frustration and waste of time I've faced. I also saved the texts and emails in case I need evidence to further escalate this case. This broker should NOT have worked with an owner/landlord that discriminates and that's what I feel. The broker interchanged types of phrases and source of incomes and asked me to separate them on purpose so he could see where it's coming from instead of just basing it on a whole number. He also calculated my supposed current combined income that is non-existent to him because I never told it to him. He kept baiting and switching words around and asked for income from last year, then this year, then last year. Then tells me it doesn't qualify. He had no numbers to work with and I had no context of what he was calculating. 1. It's illegal to deny someone's lawful income just because it's not from one source. 2. Two adults can live in a 1-bedroom so as long as the income is sufficient. It's illegal to discriminate because the other person makes less or didn't work. 3. It's also discrimination to treat potential renters differently. Telling me my income isn't sufficient without providing any sort of minimum doesn't tell me anything. I could make $100k with 2 kids and be denied, while another potential renter could make $50k and single, and be approved. As an update: I had someone call this broker to pretend to be interested in this apartment. The person told me the broker didn't ask for any specific details, only mentioned open house on a certain day/time, and said "landlord checks income, credit history, and background". So if that's not prejudice then I don't know what is. Moral of the story: Being honest gets you nowhere. Like the housing crisis in NYC isn't bad enough already now you have people false advertising, holding you hostage to your right to housing, etc. I also looked up this agent and he's supposedly a VP of Douglas Elliman Real Estate in NYC. This guy was probably breaking laws and ripping clients off to get to the top. It's insane. read more

Really unprofessional. Our agent was GABRIEL LEIBOWITZ and he basically did almost nothing. When we wanted to see a property he'd send a colleague who had no idea what we were looking for, so most of that time was wasted getting her up to speed. He randomly showed up to our home inspection and left within five minutes. Getting basic information from him was like pulling teeth. Despite his own incompetence Gabe's one saving grace is he seemed to know competent people. Nothing but bad things to say about this firm. As a big company, you'd think you'd hold your agents to a higher standard - but here's the experience I had with Ali Sayed. I originally reached out about a listing on StreetEasy that seemed too good to be true. It was listed as a No-Fee 1000 sq/ft 1BR with a private backyard and washer/dryer access for a price well under market value. It was also listed by the "owner". Upon reaching out about the apartment - we come to find that it is not in fact listed by the owner, but by Ali, who works for Douglass Elliman. Not a deal breaker, but not as advertised. Then comes the next news... Advertised as No-Fee, but he wants to collect a broker fee on this. Ok...for the price and square footage, we can still consider this. We schedule an appointment. I show up to the unit, it is at most 400 sq/ft. And the private backyard? Actually, it's a private space for the tenants occupying the rest of the building. I'd need permission from them to even access it. So this No-Fee 1000 sq ft apartment with a private backyard? Yeah, none of this true. But it's still an OK deal so I decide to apply. Then I get a phone call from Ali saying that the landlord will probably ask me to pay more months upfront, or extra security to consider my application. I would probably buckle in a pinch, but this is illegal. This guy is not only exposing the landlord to lawsuits over this, but he is putting both the company and himself at risk of fines for false advertisement and not following the current rent laws. I never filled out any disclosures required by the state, no Covid forms, no commission agreements. Is he a tenants agent? A landlords agent? A dual agent? Who knows. I don't... This whole experience shows gross negligence on all accounts. 1) False Advertising (subject to fines) 2) Failure to disclose Agent affiliation. This is a review for the agent Peco (Pete) Angjeleski who wasted my time and money, and I still don't have an apartment. My first meeting with him was in-person and he was initially attentive and on top of things. However, I live out of state, and when my apartment search continued virtually that's when things went down hill. He did a FaceTime tour of an apartment that I liked and I said I would sign a lease based on this virtual tour. That is when things went off the rails and Pete failed to shield me from a predatory real estate company and wasted my time and money: - After some back and forth the listing agent said the management company would allow a Sept. 1 move-in, but I would have to pay a $1000 deposit via venmo to hold the apartment and I would have to personally come up and see the apartment. These requirements were asked even though I said I would sign a lease sight unseen. - Pete reassured me this was a legitimate arrangement even though I had my suspicions about the deposit requirement and the listing agency not saying if my application would be approved even though they had all of my application materials. - In the meantime, Pete was not able to arrange virtual tours of other available units, even though I could see some of them had open houses. He claimed the listing agents for the other units never got back to him. - Last week Pete reassured me that my application for the apartment was the strongest the listing agency had received so far and the unit was mine as long as I came up to tour it in person. - Based on Pete's reassurances that he would never ask me to come up to NYC (I live out of state) without guarantees that the apartment was mine, I made an 8 hour round trip via car on a Saturday to view the apartment. - When I arrived the apartment was LOCKED and the listing agent and building super who had the keys were not responding to calls or text messages. - Pete apologized for the situation and offered to reimburse me for my travel expenses (screenshot attached). He never reimbursed me and as of yesterday the apartment is in contract with another person. He also asked me to stay an extra night to view the apartment the next day even though he had no assurances it would be available to view. - I am glad I never paid the deposit for this place as I believe the listing agency and agent were never serious about my application and they were stringing me along the whole time. - As my agent Pete should have looked out for my interests and protected me from shady business practices. Since I started working with Pete I have missed potential listings because he "failed" to hear back from other agents, and he's wasted my time and money. Pete tried to blame me for the situation because of my "changing" travel dates, even though he was the one pressuring me to come up and reassuring me this was a done deal. read more

I'm floored at the lack of professionalism from a broker we went through for an apartment application in Brooklyn. My partner and I were one of three applicants to a listing, with solid credit and combined income well over 40x the rent (actually 60x the rent). We scheduled a time slot at the open house with the broker, Alicia Guzzone, who failed to mention she was out of the state on vacation and wouldn't be physically present at the appointment. That was the first of many red flags. After we submitted our application and related documents, Alicia then badgered us on Christmas Eve and hassled us for additional financial records such as our investments...seemed very unnecessary and invasive seeing as she already had our last two years of tax records, recent payment stubs, and bank statements. But we acted quickly and provided the additional info about our net worth. Again, for a relatively inexpensive no-fee apartment. Alicia then collected our application fee and ghosted us for 11 days. Every time we followed up, she promised an update in the next day or two...which never came. The apartment is still listed, and last we heard one of the other two applicants dropped out, yet still no word from Alicia. NYC brokers are notoriously shady, but this one takes the cake. Don't waste your time on any Douglas Elliman listings, and DEFINITELY don't waste time or money on Alicia. read more

I was very patient with her unusually slow pace for two months, but yesterday I needed to start demanding some answers and specifics, as yet another business week was about to end without any tangible progress. Week after week, I sent gentle reminders that I still need to fill out paperwork, create a lease, provide security and first months rent, etc. I've never felt anxious NOT paying someone thousands of dollars before in my life. But I knew her lack of accountability or direction was very bad news. I have worked with multiple realtors in the past for NY apartments and this experience was incomparable for my sister and I. The initial apartment viewing did not totally meet our needs so Tom quickly suggested another option in our desired location. We immediately started the application per his instructions and he was very helpful in answering any questions regarding the process. Post signing he scheduled a time to meet with our new landlord and super to ensure the transition was smooth. Additionally, he has followed up to make sure we were satisfied in our new place. Scheduled an APT viewing with Zachary Geeraerts and emailed him once to tell him I was there early, then another 10 minutes after our agreed upon meeting time to tell him I was leaving. Didn't get a response from him until 10 minutes afterwards in which he accused me of standing him up and lying about being there. Refused to reschedule afterwards too. Terrible responsiveness from this office, its no wonder their review score is so low on here. The timeline: Online inquiry for 1 or 2br at The Leonard(101 Leonard St)--immediate email from Iman Bacodari asking buy or rent--informed rental and that was the last I heard from him. My fiancé had a similar experience- spoke with Iman on the phone, sent an unanswered text and two unanswered emails. Iman did not know that we were associated with each other either! Following suit with Iman's outstanding customer service practices is associate Lisa (last name unknown). Left her a voicemail 6/13 explaining our motivation (7/1 move-in), budget ($8,000), and issues with Iman. Still haven't heard back from her either. The receptionist is the most proactive person in this office! We called BOND and had an awesome broker meet us same day 6/15 to show us over 20 apartments in 7 different buildings. We're seeing our 2br hopeful at The Leonard on Monday. She will also be our first choice when looking to buy next summer. read more

William Mattias was one of the worst brokers I've ever worked with. He was renting on behalf of my landlord and was rude, unhelpful, unknowledgeable about the property and gave insufficient and inaccurate information about the lease. Specific to realtor Keyan Sanai. Please be advised before working with this agent! The most concerning issue with Keyan is his lack of consideration for the people who come to Keyan for finding a home. Keyan, although rated highly by others, fails to have the values of respect, consideration and honor to his word. Keyan vibrantly projects a sense of carelessness for his clients as a result of ego. In further detail, we discussed with Keyan for nearly a whole month about the opening of a unit and when the unit became available, we scheduled a showing for the earliest time upon his confirmation. After traveling multiple hours, upon our arrival, Keyan told us that he rented it to someone who just texted him a picture of a check. This was after confirming the previous night at midnight that there would be no issues because he was not showing it! His response was simply just telling us to call his manager if we have a problem with him! He is entirely unreliable and you should not trust him if you seek RELIABILITY and SECURITY; two very crucial things in today's world and market. If this is how he treats his clients, you shouldn't expect anything other than manipulation and rapacity with further complications or transactions involved with him. I encourage those looking for rentals or ownership to work with the many of the other fantastic realtors in nyc who stay true to their word and are PASSIONATE about finding you a place that you can call home. At first, the agents were responsive and wanted to help. They ended up showing us two apartments and forced us to move very quick and pressured us into signing a lease. Shortly after (and having to pay 3 months security), our situation changed, my girlfriend got sick, and we were not able to take the place. My agent, Michael Camacho, refused to give us back even partially the fee, which was $5200 after showing us only TWO apartments. It was a sleazy move and he showed ZERO integrity. I would never suggest dealing with this guy, ever, unless you want to get screwed over. read more

This complaint is against Mary Ann Clark, a real estate broker at Douglas Elliman. We purchased a flipped house, for which she was the selling agent. First and foremost, Mary Ann had an interest in the home, which she did not disclose to us at any time. At the initial viewing of the house (which was not yet finished), she said the buyer would have a lot of options on the finishes of the home e.g. great room painted, hardware for the kitchen, flooring for the basement. None of which proved to be true. After our offer was accepted, we chose our attorney, and Mary Ann said to our broker "if they go with that attorney, we'll go with a different offer." So we were forced to either lose the house or choose a different attorney. After the contract was signed, we tried to arrange to see the house for 1 of our 2 house visits (which we were contractually obligated to), Mary Ann refused to schedule until the appraisal was received (which was not in the contract). Even after the appraisal was received, she would not agree to let us see the house on the day we wanted (which we had notified her about 2 weeks prior) - instead choosing a weekday for which I had to take time off. When we tried to arrange our 2nd visit, to which we confirmed we would bring our inspector to give us his professional opinion on the outstanding items (and NOT an official inspection), Mary Ann yelled at our broker and said "that man is not allowed back in the house, after his erroneous and inaccurate findings." Our attorney confirmed she did not have the authority to decide who can and cannot come with us to the house. We confirmed the time with Mary Ann, and went to the house with our inspector, handy man and broker, and when Mary Ann pulled up to the house and saw our inspector, she backed out of the driveway and never came back. At the final walkthrough of the home, Mary Ann followed us around making comments at every turn, even locking us out of the house at one point. If you see her listed as the selling agent for a home, RUN! Our entire experience was horrific because of her dishonest, difficult, illegal behavior. And although the Managing Broker of Douglas Elliman was notified of her behavior, she was not held accountable. Disappointing. read more

STAY AWAY!!!!If I could not give any stars at all I would . THE worst company ever!!! The most unprofessional realtors in the world. I don't even know where to begin.!!! My husband and I found this beautiful property. When we met with the agent, right off the back he lied to us about the purchase price. It was listed for 1.7m. but during the two weeks of us trying to close the deal he kept changing the price of the condo. It's unheard of!!!! Come to find out the property was only 1.6. And there were some HOA fees unpaid by the sellers, which we were never told about to begin with. Apparently he wanted to try and cut a deal on the side with the sellers. We actually had to contact a lawyer, because it became a nightmare. I contacted the management asking to assign another broker, which they did. She was just as unprofessional as the other one was. We ended up dropping the deal altogether. Such a shame that property wasn't represented by a different agency . Never had we experienced such a unprofessional and sneaky treatment. Do yourself a favor and stay away . Go with a different agency and avoid the headache and the loss of potential property. I was hesitant to write a review about this for a long time, but finally decided it was so appalling that it was worth sharing. I signed a lease agreement in April for a one bedroom apartment on the UES. The landlord was aware that I was studying for the bar exam and wanted to get things settled early. In July, less than two weeks before I was supposed to move in, the landlord told me she had sold the apartment and she was breaking the lease. She offered for her Douglas Elliman broker to help me find a new apartment. The broker sent his assistant to help me look for apartments, only after me calling him constantly to set something up. The assistant told me that the landlord had wanted to tell me about the sale weeks prior but the broker convinced her not to in case it eventually fell through. One of the replacement apartments he showed me had a large broker's fee. After I expressed interest in putting in an application, they informed me that I would need to pay the broker's fee myself. I was appalled! The apartment I initially signed the lease for did not have a fee, so why would I want to pay one for the replacement apartment that Douglas Elliman was finding for me? The worst part of this story comes next. When I protested, the broker told me that the landlord's lawyers were prepared to deal with this issue if I did not give in. I then had my attorney call the broker and speak to the "landlord's lawyer." The landlord then found out that all of this was going on and informed me that she didn't even have a lawyer! Apparently the broker had pretended to be an attorney in order to scare me! Little did he know that I happened to have my own attorney who could jump in to help. At this point the landlord had no choice but to pay for my additional expenses. Beware of these broker's because not all of them are as morally upright as they will represent themselves to be! read more

Steer clear. I don't like the agents and feel bullied by Michael and Matthew. The owner is selling and as a tenant I feel frustrated when I make an effort to be out of the apartment for open houses and showings, but no agent turns up. When they are in the apartment they move my things around. They send emails that I find rude and unprofessional and have asked to show with only a few hours notice. They do not keep open houses open for the full duration and cancel when more people could have turned up. They sent me an email saying they were finishing an open house early because the apartment was a mess. This was rude, upsetting and inappropriate. I am currently moving, so things are out of place, but it is hardly in a state to warrant such an email - especially given I was not outside of my rights as a tenant. I have posted a picture of the apartment as it was and the email that Matthew sent. I find both him and Michael unprofessional and mean. I would not sell using either of these men, I would not buy using either of these men. I would recommend avoiding given there are other great realtors in the city who are friendly, professional and good at what they do. read more

My parents hired Douglas Elliman to buy their first house. We had Gene Zemel act as if he is the property owner and telling us that its no longer available, but later we saw it posted by the owner, and asked the owner about our name, owners never heard of us and our offer. Very shady practice, I wish I had time to deal with this experience, I'm just disgusted and want to move on, its already a crazy market as is without realtors like this one. read more

Hello! I am rating this company so high because of our broker. Charles Beda was a god-send. He took us to very nice places within our budget. Charles did not try to push us to a higher price range like other brokers did. The places that we saw were truly the best bang for our buck. Everywhere we saw was clean, well lit, and exactly the kind of places we had envisioned ourselves in. Even when other brokers had discouraged us, saying that there would be NOTHING in our price range, Charles was reassuring and found us the perfect apartment. It really felt like Charles was working on our side. My roommate and I sent Charles an email every five minutes (this is not an exaggeration). Charles was very patient and understanding with us... we were the most annoying and worst people to show around, but Charles did not complain (at least to our faces!). Would I use Charles Beda again? ABSOLUTELY. Would I recommend him to everyone I know? I already have... and will continue to do so. The broker fee varied from apartment to apartment and Charles was definitely flexible in working with us. Unlike other brokers, Charles Beda was WORTH EVERY PENNY. Happy Hunting! read more

Useless and unprofessional agents..I read all these reviews while waiting for my application for an apartment in Murray hill to be approved. I was positive about the approvals and wasted a week and half of my precious time.. .. Then shit hit the fan!! They are the single most unprofessional company brokering company I have dealt with till date!! ( I have lived in 3 countries till date). my useless agent from Douglas Elliman wasted a week and half of mine trying to assure me that the apartment will get approved!! I missed applying to many many genuine ones. When an expat moves to your city how do u expect him to show the perfect credit score?? I expect the real estate agent to be professional enough to set my expectations right. Soo much drama!!! They first came back saying I have to pay 2 months rent and 2 months advance.. I agreed and they backed out and again revised the numbers to 1 yr rent in advance and 1 month deposit.. It's all a joke to me .. I guess they cannot think of the reverse math ...Why would I trust you with my money and pay a years rent upfront??? Do they need a week and half to guess that management company will most likely reject an application???? Don't waste your time and there are tons of decent apartments out there!! There tons of decent agents trying to make a genuine living out of this business out there!! read more

Fresh in the city as a young professional moving with my equally young girlfriend, I needed quick turnaround and a creative solution to a unique rental need (limited credit history). Jordan Shea was the first (and thankfully only) broker I reached out to at PDE, having stumbled upon his contact information on their website. What he pulled off was next to a miracle, getting us a prime unit in a prime luxury building in our neighborhood of choice UNDER budget with our credit complications. Obviously this was a joint effort between Jordan and the rental agent for the building, but where most brokers would have said "tough luck" and stuck us somewhere we didn't want to be, Jordan persevered and called in every professional favor he could to do the deal. We were absolutely shocked at how persistent and responsive he was. Jordan is the second NYC broker I've ever worked with. I had taken a job in the city for a year in 2008 and was promptly introduced to a senior VP broker with the Corcoran Group who sent me out with a "shower", and only showed up when I'd settled on a place and met with him at the property manager's office (reminding me to "remember my fee check" from his cab on the way there, even though he couldn't remember my name). Jordan was completely, night and day, different. Bottom line--if you need a broker to work with you tirelessly, set reasonable expectations, work to find a good fit, and most importantly see the deal through to your move in day, call Jordan. I can't recommend him enough. read more
