It's…read morejust down the road from the Riverview Cemetery, and considerably smaller and perhaps a bit more private. My interest is a combination of being on an historical cemetery board in Genoa Nevada and my position as a Board member at Temple Bat Yam in South Lake Tahoe. This visit (and my Shul service) also gave me the chance to catch up on the various Jewish burial and morning rituals. So for those interested in that, here's my related "Guide for the Perplexed": Chevra Kadisha - A sacred burial society (usually connected with the cemetery or synagogue) tasked with preparing a bode for burial, performing a ritual purification (tahara) and dressing the body in shrouds. Jewish funerals generally take place as soon after death as possible. Aninut - The period from the moment of death until the burial. Shiva - Meaning "seven" in Hebrew, is the week of mourning following the funeral. Shloshim - Meaning "thirty" in Hebrew, is the first month of mourning following the funeral. Visits to the Gravesite - Some family and friends find it meaningful and/or comforting to visit the graves of loved ones before the High Holidays and at other times during the year. Small stones are often placed on the gravestone to mark the visitor's presence. Unveiling/Memorial - A formal ceremony following the placement of the matzevah (gravestone) at the cemetery. Customs differ, but the unveiling is generally held any time after shloshim and up to a year after burial. Mourner's Kaddish - Version of the Kaddish, praising God, that mourners recite during the bereavement period and to mark the anniversary of a death of a loved one. Yahrzeit - The yearly anniversary of a loved one's death. Yizkor - As part of the synagogue service on the final day of Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot, and on Yom Kippur, special yizkor (memorial) prayers for deceased relatives are recited.

If you have family here I strongly urge that you visit them and help the volunteers in their work on repairing headstones and maintaining the records If you're a punk kid looking to kick some headstones over...stay away. There are regular police patrols as well as visitors like myself who are present all hours of the night and all days of the week protecting this beautiful space.

The Willamette National Cemetery is a resting place for deceased military and their spouses…read more The administrative building is near the entrance. You can pick up a map here and get information on where your loved ones are buried. It is also the starting point for setting up services. We were here on a Monday morning for military funeral honors for recently deceased Air Force Lt Col Keith McCormick. His remains had been cremated, so the ceremony was slightly different than what you might have seen on television since there was no casket. We were given a map and directed to drive to a staging point sign where we were to remain in our cars until the director showed up. Once there, he guided the car procession to a covered pavilion where the ceremony took place. The wood pavilion was on a steep hill. This was challenging for some friends and family who used canes and walkers. We were told to be sure to have individuals with walking limitations ride in the first few cars so they wouldn't have as far to walk. November in Oregon is beautiful with the changing colors of the tree leaves. The pavilion was surrounded in gold and red trees. It was a cool, clear day, but the covered pavilion would have offered us shelter from the rain and the cold had we needed it. There were a few benches for the primary family members to sit on. The rest of us squeezed into the structure lining the back wall and beyond. In front was a small table where Keith's remains sat. Two airmen (both women actually) walked in formation to the front of the pavilion where they did the unfurling, folding, and presentation of the US flag. Off in the distance about 50 yards to the left of the structure, there were 3 airmen dressed in ceremonial uniform. They held their rifles in the air, discharged them and did the final gun salute. An airman also played taps on the bugle. It was a very quick, dignified ceremony that took less than 30 minutes. Apparently this is provided for FREE to all active military and veterans. This is a valuable benefit and only take a small bit of preparation and completion of forms to reserve ones plot, to have a headstone made, and to organize the military honors ceremony.

Every time I pay visits I get greeted by very knowledgeable staff, they answer to all of your…read morequestions and inquiries and go above and beyond and beyond when helping you find information about your loved ones. The value of services are highly appreciated and recommended. Unlike other national cemeteries, this one by far are very organized and if issues come up, they try to work with your requests or try to follow up with you they don't have all the answers.

We often don't think about all of the meticulous details required to organize funerals and memorial services, but these folks handle everything with precision and grace. The facility is tucked away in a hidden corner of Portland on Taylor's Ferry Road, and rises out of the forrested hillside suddenly - making it very easy to miss! The building boasts a large parking lot that covers two levels, and there are accessibility features throughout the property for those in need of them. Though the mausoleaum is an expansive space filled with light, it feels quiet and intimate. I'm very impressed that a facility dating back to 1916 is able to sparkle and shine like it was built yesterday. I very much appreciate the management and staff's dedication to maintaining this important place that is special to so many families.

We dealt primarily with Tim (funeral director) who was patient, kind, and took it upon himself to educate us on the process and held our hand the entire way as we navigated our way through the logistics of it all. There's a small sign up right when you turn in about it being private property, but it seems that notice pertains just to the truly private property right along NW Dixie Mountain. If you drive up the one-lane road past the house and barns you'll pass through the cemetery gates and reach the parking lot. Graves here go back to the early 19th century. You can look online for records that genealogists and historians have put together of the cemetery's burials. Just as its comments mention, there were a couple of friendly horses ready to say hello to us as we left. The place was peaceful and there was a bit of a view to the south/east.
