Amazing hot Yoga Studio! starting with the staff: the instructions are great (Heidi and Amanda) are some of the best yoga instructors in the valley with fun and upbeat classes. The studio is very hot (the way I prefer it), the lay out of the room is great with sufficient space so it never feels crowded. Also the locker rooms are very nice and always clean. I am glad they offer a 6pm evening classes and 4pm weekend classes too. I am thankful for the studio and cant wait to practice again read more

The special programming is fantastic. Down Dog has planned trips to the beach for yoga and have partnered with local breweries to offer yoga classes with a pint afterward. I took a partner yoga class once and had a lot of fun. Along with yoga, the studio offers massage therapy and a sauna. Lots of variety in their class offerings - teachers and styles - you'll find something for you with a little effort. Two studios mean there's lots to choose from. Particular standouts are Cynthia Hoss - who teaches every minute and is very experienced. Just started taking with Kate Kalmbach, whose hands-on, Iyengar-based focus I really appreciate, having started out with Iyengar many many years ago in Chicago. I will say that there is a difference between leading a class and teaching a class, and some of the younger teachers do the former. read more

I can't highly enough recommend trying out their introductory two-week package ($20 for unlimited classes for first-time customers to try out the wide range of classes available at this beautiful studio). They also offer cash discounts so it's easier for those on a budget than some of the other offerings locally. While they aren't bikram focused like some of the other local studios, they do offer a hot class as the last class of the day most days, so it's available while keeping the studio at a cooler temperature the rest of the time. I enjoyed trying the gamut of what they had available from relaxation-focused classes and the deeply held positions of yin to the zippy pace of their flow classes (although I find those the hardest to keep up with). They also have prenatal yoga, do occasional partner yoga programs, have advance classes for pro yogis (giggle -- just noticed that sounds like pierogis!) and occasionally will partner with the neighboring juice bar for three-day detox programs in which participants get three days of meals/juices and yoga for a set price (what a way to start the New Year off right). Every instructor I had there was fantastic and the business seems to have a real commitment to community, which is important to me. In addition to the space itself being absolutely beautiful, you also get to walk past an art gallery on your way in and can grab some fresh juice on the way out from the neighboring juice bar. They offer massage and a chiropractor as well but I haven't had a chance to try them out yet. Overall, just a great spot for healing and meditation. read more

I've been going to Down Dog Yoga for about 9 months. I take the Slow Flow class on Wednesday evenings with Pat. I love this class and I love the facility. Pat is a great yoga teacher. She is very calming and creates a wonderful atmosphere after a normally stressful day for me. Down Dog's yoga studio is beautiful decorated, clean, and has an awesome front desk staff. Great new place. Down Dog has an open, unintimidating style. The classes I've taken -- yoga for athletes, heated flow, campus flow -- strike at beginner/intermediate with options to make it more advanced. The focus on the physicality lets you largely guide your own thought experience. Most of the teachers are engaging and responsive. The rooms are a good size and not crowded. Super clean gym-quality shower space is helpful, in particular after hot yoga (at 85 degrees). I bring my own mat, but the free ones to borrow seem pretty good. Comparing it to places I know in DC and New York, Down Dog is a bit less advanced, but looks like it'll get there. The classes definitely strike at the right price point. That the space is windowless threw me a bit at first, but it's designed in a way that makes it feel like a sanctuary. Down Dog is very different from Sangha Yoga down the street, which has windows and distracting noise, plus the staff at Sangha had way too much attitude. My only quibble at Down Dog is that sound bounces a bit in the rooms. read more

This has a nice atmosphere and is set up like a sanctuary retreat. It's clean and provides a nice practice. Instructors are friendly and welcoming. I've tried a few different classes and prefer faster moving flows so haven't found a class here that I absolutely love. That being said, the classes I have tried I like and have had good relaxing practices. My only complaint is the time commitment- every class I've tried has gone over the time stated, be sure to allow an extra 30-40 minutes in addition to the time allotted so it's difficult for someone who has a busy schedule. read more

I was in Kalamazoo for the day and didn't want to skip yoga (I typically go 5-6 days a week in the Detroit area), so I hit the 6 am Morning Flow with Jen. I should note in advance that I don't prefer to practice that early in the morning, especially on cooler days, since my joints tend to tighten up overnight, but this was the only class that worked with my schedule. Down Dog still has a more varied class schedule than almost all of the other Kalamazoo yoga studios I looked into, which is favorable for others like me who have odd schedules and need daytime class options. Their use of the MindBody app is also helpful. The studio is in the heart of downtown and was an easy walk from my hotel, a plus for me but maybe inconvenient from a parking perspective. When I arrived, the doors were still locked and the instructor hadn't arrived yet. Fortunately, another student was already there to assure me that this happened with early classes sometimes and we could chill and stretch a little, since at least we were able to access the entryway to the building (we weren't left out in the cold). Down Dog offers assorted blocks, bolsters, blankets, and other props for students to use, as well as having showers and spa services on site - to make yoga a little more convenient. I was surprised that the instructor asked everyone why they were there at the start of class, but I suppose since there were only four or five people, the small touches are nice, and in a 75 minute class, there's time to chat a little. They held the studio at room temperature, which I was disappointed at for a morning class on a cool day - warming it up a little would have helped to counter the tight joints I came in with. There also were a lot more seated poses than I'm used to, and a lot less flowing than the name of the class implied. The stretches were pretty good but I wouldn't say that there was much of an aerobic or cardio element to the class, so I don't know that I would classify it as a workout. Of course there are lots of different philosophical and physical approaches to yoga. I'm partial to alignment-based classes with a strong focus on learning through proper execution of the pose (as in, I'm clumsy/awkward and need direction so that I don't hurt myself). Jen was in the middle of the pack in terms of explaining how poses should work, which was okay for me since I've had a fair amount of experience, but if I were newer I might have been a bit frustrated on some of the more complicated positions. I'm also accustomed to instructors physically correcting me if they see me making poor alignment choices, or at least verbally offering adjustments. Jen kind of did this but since she didn't use my name or come around individually (as I mentioned, there weren't very many of us in the class, so she could have), it felt like she was passive aggressively making an announcement to the whole group when I was pretty sure she was intending it for me. That's a positive for people who don't want to be singled out, but to me it was a bit distracting, especially at times she was suggesting something based on her philosophy of yoga that was just a different interpretation than mine. I probably wouldn't go back to this specific class, but if I'm back in town, I'll look into other classes. Given the number of options here, I'm sure I could find an instructor I'd like. read more

He took the time to ask everyone what they were hoping to gain from the class, and somehow worked shoulders, wrists, hips and core poses into his sequence! Found this studio while unexpectedly in Kalamazoo for 2 weeks. Went to several classes everyday and all were fantastic. Beautiful space, great teachers and a variety of classes from restorative to heated vinyasa. Personal attention in each class, Uplifting and inspirational words offered after each class. No pressure --students encouraged to move at their own level. Nice community of students--friendly and welcoming. read more
