This review is hard to write. I do not recommend Dr. Lawler. He is a pro-life catholic who did not appropriately disclose my options for non-invasive prenatal genetic testing. I was high risk for chromosomal abnormalities due to my advanced maternal age. He is a caring doctor, yes, but he failed me as a patient. If an OBGYN chooses to bring their religion to their practice then they MUST be upfront about it to expectant mothers. If this was California, he could've lost his license. Thankfully I found a different OBGYN during my 2nd trimester and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. read more

Dr. Lawlor epitomizes professionalism, care, empathy, bedside manners, and love. He is a wonderful man of God who places the importance of pro-life values in his work. As a woman who is pregnant with her first child, it was very difficult for me to find a doctor who had the same morals and values as I. It was very important for me to find someone who is against abortion because I I want my child and myself to be cared by someone who values life. I am so happy I found dr. Dr. Lawler is an outstanding OB/GYN -- friendly, knowledgeable, caring, and genuinely kind. He is a doctor you can trust who is also personable and compassionate. The staff is also fantastic. From the warm welcome at the desk to the smiling nurses to the peaceful and beautiful interior of the suite itself, it's by far the best practice I've visited. Dr. Lawler recently delivered my sixth baby. I have had different doctors and visited different practices for almost each baby due to moving or insurance changes, so I've been through the routine enough times to know what to expect. It's something to say that this practice is in a class by itself. Patients should know that Dr. Lawler is a practicing, faithful Catholic, and that makes a difference in his practice. The interior reflects his faith as well as his belief that children are a blessing and a gift from God. This also means that he does not prescribe artificial birth control. Requesting contraception here is as absurd as trying to order tacos at the Olive Garden. Don't visit demanding something that simply is not offered at this practice. What you'll find instead is answers to medical questions, a genuine desire to discover and treat medical problems instead of mask the symptoms, and information about safe, effective, and morally harmonious solutions. You'll find a cheerful and friendly staff and a practice where patients are more than just numbers and are made to feel welcome and respected. I highly recommend this practice. read more

I went into Dr. Lawler to have an IUD removed due to nine months of bleeding and to explore other options since I'd reacted so badly to the IUD. I had had a life-threatening first pregnancy (extremely severe hyperemesis gravidarum and intrahepatic cholestasis, as well as the inability to keep down much-needed prescription medication due to the HG). Dr. Lawler removed the IUD and then convinced me that he would be able to treat a case of HG perfectly well -- that I'd be totally healthy during a second pregnancy. He was slick and smooth in convincing me of this. He manipulated me. So I got pregnant a second time. I was so terrified, more terrified than I'd ever been of anything in my entire life. I was violently ill before I even had a positive pregnancy test, just like in my first pregnancy. Dr. Lawler insisted that that was impossible and that I was being melodramatic. He did finally, reluctantly prescribe some prescription B6 and unisom, which was less than useless. I insisted that I needed to get Zofran, Phenergan, and Reglan started very quickly. I reminded him that I'd had heart, liver, and brain damage from my first pregnancy and that he'd promised to treat my HG effectively this time. He said I'd be fine. He told me to pray. I found myself on the phone with Planned Parenthood. I went in for an ultrasound at six weeks in part because I was so incredibly sick. There was a very weak heartbeat. I went in a week later, starting to feel much better, and there was no heartbeat. I got all kinds of sympathy and talk in the office about how sometimes Jesus had plans for this and that. What Dr. Lawler didn't have plans for was adequately treating my HG like he'd promised. I was so grateful to have miscarried. That pregnancy could have killed me. Within three weeks of the miscarriage, I was on oral hormonal birth control, and I have been for almost two years now. I would not recommend this hack to my worst enemy. He is dangerous, plain and simple. He lets his personal religious beliefs undermine the health and well-being of the victims he lures into his office. read more

I've been to this practice twice in the past few weeks since it recently opened to see Dr. Anthony Caruso, and it's wonderful to receive such individualized attention and expertise. Both doctors, Anthony Caruso and Robert Lawler, are considered leaders in their field, and I've been to both of them. Their office waiting area is very comfortable and feels like your living room, their staff greets you warmly and is very helpful, the nurses truly take an interest in you, and the doctors give a lot of individual attention to each patient. This is so different from the "you're just a number" approach that I've had at many (ok, most) other practices. I have a history of failed pregnancies, including ectopic pregnancy, and have seen other fertility specialists, but I wanted to try a new approach and am so pleased that this practice has opened. Dr. Caruso is a Reproductive Endocrinologist in addition to being an OB/GYN. He is extremely thorough in working to get to the bottom of my issues, rather than just stating that I have unexplained infertility and suggesting a lucrative procedure like IVF, which we aren't interested in pursuing. In my first appointment, he came up with a strategy to thoroughly map out my cycle using a variety of data, and got started right away with an ultrasound and setting up labs that day. He is honest in sharing his assessment with me and makes sure I see and understand what is shown on my ultrasounds as he's doing them. Oh, and he did the least painful pap test I've ever had. Dr. Lawler is a wonderful physician and person as well - he was my doctor in his prior practice, and is undergoing training to assist couples with fertility issues. Several of my friends have had Dr. Lawler deliver their babies. It is often physically and emotionally difficult to pursue these issues, but going to this office is a pleasure, and worth the drive. I highly recommend them for all women - for regular gynecological care, obstetrics, and fertility issues. read more

After having dr Lawler recently deliver my first child, I can honestly say I trust this man 100%. He took excellent prenatal care of me and always answered all of my questions and addressed my concerns. I knew he was the real deal after he phoned me one day to discuss results and our conversation wasn't rushed. We had prob a 15 minute phone call just talking about results/next steps- which might not seem like a big deal but I always find that doctors are in a hurry and usually are quick to end a call like that. When a physician actually listens to you and makes you feel that you are their priority, you begin to trust that doctor. Dr Lawler has an excellent reputation and is well respected in his field. Several of my friends/colleagues had him deliver their children and they all have had great experiences. I also had a great experience. My husband is not an easy one to impress, but even he was very pleased and trusting of Dr Lawler. As far as his beliefs, they do not have any bearing on the care I receive from him. But people need to do their research on a doctor before seeing them- then you will know what to expect and won't have to blast their practice unfairly on yelp. Lastly, the ladies that work in the office are all genuinely awesome. Always friendly, always helpful. Dr. Lawler and the staff at Downers Grove OBGYN are absolutely amazing. I have had nothing but great experiences at every appointment. Currently I have two children, and Dr. Lawler delivered my second. My first pregnancy was with a practice with 6 doctors and I never felt like I was being listened to or appreciated. My latest pregnancy was completely different. Dr. Lawler helped with my fertility issues prior to my second pregnancy and helped talk about and prescribe medication that I believe allowed me to have a second child. Every appointment was wonderful and I felt like he cared about my questions and concerns. He was also an amazing doctor to have in the delivery room! He was patient and kind and I felt like I was on my baby's schedule.. Not his.. Which is hard to come by with many doctors! His practice is wonderful and they truly care for all women and children! There were many appointments I had to bring my toddler along and they had special toys and friendly faces to make me feel at home! There were also a few times that I had to make "emergency" appointments and was able to get in right away. If I had a pregnancy concern they never hesitated to say "come on in" if it would make me feel more at ease! I currently live about an hour away, and although it makes appointments a little harder to get to, Dr. Lawler and his staff are well worth the drive!!! I never write good reviews, I only write reviews when I am not happy with the service. This is one of these times I am making an exception. Doctor Caruso is an amazing doctor. When most doctors do it for money, dr. Caruso really tries to help his patients. Dr Caruso has been my doctor for a long time, and I have recently told him about my 5 year old daughter who has had health issues . In the last year, I took my daughter to about 15 different doctors . None of the doctors helped us. Dr Caruso suggested that my doctor should see pediatric surgeon. I listened to his advice, and I took my daughter to a surgeon who recommended surgery. My daughter had surgery 2 days ago , and she is finally fine. I recommend dr Caruso to everyone. read more

Avoid this place like the plague! I went here for a follow up on a hospital ER diagnosis of Endometriosis. I had all of the paperwork and a disc containing the results from a cat scan and an ultrasound. I've had this condition for a long time and the birth control pill alleviates the symptoms. Well, lo and behold, not only did Dr. Lawler refuse to prescribe me birth control, but he also tried telling me that couldn't understand how they could diagnose me with Endometriosis without examining me after I told him several times that the results, being the disc and paperwork were in his hand! I understand that if he had some Christian beliefs to why he couldn't prescribe me the pill, that's fine, but not even examining me, refusing to view the disc and papers FROM A HOSPITAL, or offering me any alternatives to the pill is purely unprofessional and unacceptable! read more

For the first time in my life, I can't wait to go back to the gynecologist! Hahaha! Dr. Lawler is incredibly kind and is knowledgeable about issues that "mainstream" OB/GYNs are unaware of. I've had difficulty finding a practitioner who takes me seriously (which really shouldn't be that hard) and who not only tolerates NFP but in fact encourages, supports, and works alongside its use. If you're looking for a doctor who lights up at the sight of an NFP chart, this is your guy. Even if NFP isn't your thing, Dr. Lawler can help solve gynecologic issues without the Pill! The office staff are very friendly as well--I couldn't have imagined a better experience. I highly recommend Dr. Lawler and his practice. read more

I have seen Dr. Caruso twice in the last four weeks at this practice and have been very impressed with his care. I had previous pre-term labor and premature births with both of my kids, so I was happy to find a doctor willing to help me address these issues in the first trimester of this third pregnancy. Dr. Caruso cares for not only me as a patient, but also treats my unborn child as a patient from day 1 and that's not the case with other docs I've seen at other practices!! He has incredible knowledge about his field and a true gift in teaching and explaining it in a gentle and clear manner in the doctor office. I would highly recommend this practice. I am a new patient of Dr. Lawler and he has been incredible. I don't know why I went to a Dr. I wasn't comfortable with for so long; should have made this switch years ago. I've never felt more safe or secure in an OBGYN appointment. My husband and I went off the pill to practice NFP. What a wonderful decision it was, and thanks to the kind support of Dr. Lawler and his practice, we have never felt more at home. I had my first visit when I was 3 weeks pregnant. The fetus was too small to hear the heartbeat but doctor insisted I needed an USG. Of course it didn't show much except for a tiny black dot. I was charged $560 being told it was a missed period. Then he sent me for a blood work but only to measure the level of my progesterone that was normal. He prescribed super expensive vaginal progesterone $300 for 10 day. I checked at another pharmacy and you can get vaginal progesterone for $30. But that is the only brand he "advertises". He wanted to see me every week taking USG - but my baby is still too small! I have insurance , but the first visit only with the blood test and pills costed me $1,000 out of pocket. I find it a fraudulent business. He never gave me an USG picture instead he drew a picture on a piece of paper saying this is a size of your baby today comparing to last week. I didn't receive any kind of support. Mr. Lawler didn't spend any time with me going over the essentials that first time mother should know. The visited usually lasted around 5-10 min max. The only question I would get was if I felt pregnant? When I asked some questions regarding diet he said I can eat and drink everything and exercise until I am exhausted. That was the only advice I got from him. Ridiculous! After 2 visits I rejected to come so often and I communicated that. But I would get calls on Wednesdays telling me that my appointment is on the next day. After 2 months I had a miscarriage. I started bleeding in a morning so I rushed to the doctor. He just said that this is a miscarriage and I will have a heavy bleeding. I didn't get any details, what should I do, if I should go to the hospital, take medication. The pain was unbearable. I was heavily bleeding and didn't know what to do. It lasted for a week. Nobody even called me to see how I am doing. I delivered my fetus but I didn't know what to do with it. When I called dr Lawler - the Catholic man how he calls himself, he told me to bury my baby under the tree! Insane. It was against my believes. For a check up I went to a woman doctor who was very friendly, spent a lot of time with me going over the details what is happening to my body, when can we conceive again, done my comprehensive blood work. It turned out that I had servious vit D deficiency that could lead to miscarriage. She couldn't believe that any doctor would do an USG before 3 months. She said she never heard of it. Maybe if the doctor would pay attention to the patients and follow the same rules that other doctors do, he could help his patients and perhaps save some lifes. she Doctor who didn't spend 5 minutes with me talking to me about pregnancy and giving me tips or asking if I take any medication isn't a person I would trust. read more

Dr. Lawler is nice and friendly and so is his staff. I love the fact that it is a faith based practice . I am not big on birth control not only because of my religion but because my body doesn't do well with artificial chemicals in medicine. So I am happy he did not push for that. However, there were some things that I didn't really like. I came in for irregular periods, he did a pep smear and on the spot told me things were normal. I would assume the results take a few days to process before telling a patient things are normal? For irregularity he wanted me to to Chaste Berry and recommended products from a company he works with. He tried selling me products from the company he works with in my previous year. I decided to get a second opinion. The second place I went to did an ultrasound and blood work , turned out I had a mild case of anemia! No wonder I was feeling tired a lot! I'm very petite so the anemia affected my body in various ways. I wish he would have done something like that instead of just having take a herbal supplement without truly knowing why my periods were irregular. overall, he is a great person but that experience left me a bit iffy. On the plus side, I over heard his staff praying for someone and I thought that was very sweet! read more

I'm 55 years old and going through the change. I saw Dr Lawler for issues with hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and painful intercourse, which are very common for this age and stage of my life. He recommended Estrovera which is expensive, not guaranteed to work, takes 12 weeks to see if it does work, and the reviews stated that it didn't really relieve the menopausal symptoms, but had negative side effects of stomach pain, constipation/diarrhea depending on the person, and even kidney failure with some people. When asking what I could do in the meantime (12 weeks) for the painful intercourse, he didn't have any suggestions other than changing sexual positions, which to me were awkward and a bit too personal. I wanted to know of a safe vaginal lubricant that could be placed internally because that's where my issues were. When the subject of vaginal estrogen came up, I asked him if this would be safe for my husband because the research I had done said that men would absorb the estrogen during intercourse and it was not good. His response to me was "he's not going to grow breast." I found this response very sarcastic, unprofessional, rude, immature, and if he was trying to be funny, it wasn't that either. I'm going to him for professional advise and THAT is how he responds to me? I paid money to see this man? NEVER AGAIN! I will be seeing a woman OBGYN from now on. Let's face it ladies, no matter how much a man has studied, he will NEVER know what we are going through like a lady will. By that sarcastic response, he also showed me that he couldn't care less about the health of me or my husband. On another note, he recommended that I get a flu shot, FROM HIM, because HIS shots have no preservatives. I took his advise. Got the shot on Friday, started feeling bad on Saturday, today is Tuesday and I'm still feeling horrible.Thank you Dr. Lawler for not only your sarcasm, but also for giving me the flu. I will never be getting HIS flu shot again. read more
