We drove to Fredonia Ks on our way to Olathe from Las Vegas NV. Absolutely worth the effort. Great staff and friendly customers. If you don't try the Rory Burger you're a vegan. The house made Ron's Carolina Style BBQ sauce is a great addition to the Rory. read more

Fresh food, great service. The place is literally 8 feet wide and like a hallway but pull up a stool. The staff can't miss you as it is so small but they check on you a lot which is nice. They all seem to know the locals but interact w everyone. We got some salads and some burgers. The burgers were fresh and hot. The fries were not crisp but were ok. The cokes were crazy laden in crushed ice but they kept topping them off so was all good. Cute town and decent business. read more

This is an oasis in a Desert! Though small and intimate, it is a welcoming and friendly place! Food and service is wonderful! Highly recommend! Traveling through town stopped for lunch. I had a Ruben with cheese curds very good. I have eaten Reuben sandwiches in many places. This ranks in the top of the list. Service was great waitress Susan was very friendly. Along with the dine counter atmosphere this was a great stop. read more

Love this place. Nicest people, all! This, paired with delicious food and great service made this the perfect place to stop for lunch on a hot summer day as we head across southeast Kansas. As a special bonus, we sampled then purchased a quart of the most delicious homemade bread and butter pickles. The lady that puts them up grows the cucumbers and spices herself. This is an old school little diner where you sit right at the counter and watch Rory prepare your meal. We ordered the philly cheese steak and the Reuben, with the hand cut fries. The food was delicious and so was the hospitality. The Downtown Grill is located on the town square next to a museum, so it's a nice road trip stop...much better than fast food at an exit. Great family stop! At first glance I was afraid such a small building couldn't handle our family of seven, but there was plenty of room. We also didn't notice the specials and thought it was just a burger diner until the owner chef came out to welcome us and explain the specials. Such a quaint true definition of a diner. It was packed at 1:30 on New Year's Eve, with people also eating at picnic tables outside. Yet, we were seated at the bar within minutes and served an amazing bacon cheeseburger with the works and chicken strips. Any place that has honey and Country Bob's in addition to ketchup and mustard on the counter gets my vote for knowing flavor. The thin, fresh cut fries were heavenly drizzled with honey. Love this cafe and it's my go to place when I'm visiting. Rory and his staff are extremely friendly and provide excellent service. The fries are MUST!!!! During our most recent road trip we found this little grill. What a great experience is was eating local. We heard about farming and local goings on as well as having a great hamburger and fries. If you're driving across Kansas on highway 400, this is a short detour (less than 5 minutes off the highway) that is well worth it. Very reasonable prices on great food- Philly cheesesteak with onion rings were delicious! The smoked turkey, bacon and Swiss sandwich special was super high quality and also really yummy. And the service was really good- as others noted, very friendly folks here. Note that they do not take credit cards, do not serve alcohol, and are open M-F, 6:30AM- 2:00 PM. If you are driving to or from the Branson area, it's about 3 hours from there, the perfect time to stop for lunch on your trip! read more

Traveling through eastern Kansas looking for food, there is not a lot to choose from. Found this very tiny diner in a small little town of Fredonia. Was surprised that everything we ordered was delicious. Lots of fresh smoky meat on Smoked pork loin sandwich. Hubby and I both also had a salad that was very fresh and the homemade balsamic dressing was really good! Husband enjoyed the blackened chicken he had on his salad. Brewed ice tea was good too .
