We ate Thursday evening at Smokey D's BBQ on Main St. in Chanute. Our waitress was helpful, cordial and attentive; and our food was on the table quickly. My husband and I both had the Thursday special: A burger covered with brisket, topped with cheese, then topped with either coleslaw or baked beans. Potato salad for the side. The brisket was delicious and tender, and the hamburger was very flavorful. Add a slathering of BBQ sauce, and you know this is worth a second trip to SE Kansas. I enjoyed the classic potato salad, but I do like how my husband makes it with a little Worcesterchire Sauce to kick it up a notch. We talked with the owner, Mark Davidson, and his wife. We also sampled the sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. We really need some of that when you get it in a bottle! We must come back to try other menu items. This restaurant is a jewel --- tasty food at a great price.

Don't pass up the Jalapeño Pickles! I had the potato salad and beans, both I thought leaned sweet as well, however, the Jalapeño Pickles may have thrown off my taste buds. Pay attention on your way back to the highway, because if you stay on the main road, you will be headed in the opposite direction.

Toward the end of our meal we were informed by the waitress the slaw was bad and all remaining slaw was thrown away. We were offered no alternative side order nor offered any kind of discount for a side that was over salted. No manager talked to us. Also, I ordered a take-out meal that was the same menu item I ordered for dine-in. I had ordered Cole Slaw on this order. The waitress said nothing about the slaw until I opened the sack and found a sauce tub of potato salad which I did not order. At that point she informed us the slaw in the kitchen had been thrown away and my order was substituted with potato salad. I was not informed nor asked if I wanted a different side order since the slaw was bad. In fact, it was at this point we were informed about the slaw being thrown away. There was at most two small bites of potato salad which was smaller than the dine-in portion. It appears ordering take-out gets you smaller portions of some items. I suggest you check your order before leaving and I wouldn't expect any kind of discount for bad food. To be fair, I did not complain to the waitress other than to question the small portion of potato salad. I did not ask for a manager. I suggest if anything happens to you talk to a manager, then I will be happy to see a review of how that turns out. However, looking at other reviews it doesn't appear this place gives discounts. To review the quality and taste of the food I'll simply say it was good enough except salty in certain bites. I return to eating establishments that provide good food and service and takes care of their customers. This place doesn't qualify so I don't plan on ever returning.
