Not a whole lot to choose from around here, however, this is a great place for food and drinks. Husband had chicken sandwich and enjoyed it. I had chicken fried mash and I could only eat half; could've used more chicken and less potatoes; but was tasty. We will be back while we're here. read more

Double date night with our daughter and her fiancée while visiting the area for the holidays. Wanted a place with good food and atmosphere so we decided on Downunder. Getting here it was weirde that it is set up behind the motel with the signage by the road. Plenty of parking and tables in a Saturday night, we were seated by the bar. Decor is sporty as well as retro with the chrome stools at the tall top tables. We were seated in a booth which was pretty tight for my 6'6 husband but we made due. Yummy drink specials and a full bar for all. Drinks ordered it took awhile to decide on what to have, lots of options to choose from. Chicken wings are highly recommended so we ordered the jalapeño and mango boneless which were awesome!! We all enjoyed our meals which were wings for two, a burger, and the teriyaki bowl. The bowl was so big there were left overs to bring home. A fridge Oreo sundae completed our meal. Excellent music throughout and ended with live music! Definitely will be back when we visit again! read more

We were up there Wed night to celebrate Sharon's birthday. WHAT a great setting and food. Loved it. Honestly made me think of being on vacation in a resort town. Food choices were great, presentation fabulous and outdoor eating! Marty Gervais and crew hit this one out of the park. The food served in the newsprint paper, fries in the old fashioned tin cup. All was great. All this here in little ole Houlton Maine. Covid won't ruin us here in Aroostook County. read more

This is a hidden gem on Rte 1 just off 95 in Houlton ME. We just moved to metropolitan Houlton and Downunder is our go-to Thirsty Thursday venue. New England sports-themed venue with tons of big screens (go Sox/Pats/Celts/Bruins!) with great country and classic rock loops. Food is fab - a tasty, inventive menu with so many options. Primarily bar food but many great entrees (burgers, bowls. pastas. salads with protein extras). Waitstaff is wonderful - tip them extra in this COVID era. They work hard and everyone deserves a boost these days. Overheard patrons at one table complaining about food temp - cannot speak to their food issues - it's not been our experience. Definitely worth a try - opens at 4pm. read more

So disappointed tonight. Husband and I went with our 2 adult children. Ordered fried haddock..came out baked. Rice was cold. Husband got shrimp..very small portion. Kids had steak. They each told waiter VERY RARE several times. Came out over done and tough. Use to be so much better. Last time my daughter went there she said same thing happened with her steak,which is why they both said very rare several times. Prices aren't bad for a good dinner, but way too high for EVER order to be a disappointment. There is also no handicapped accessibility!!!! read more

Very Friendly neighborhood casual pub (Restaurant and full bar). Lots of locals of all ages "where everybody knows your name" but visitors to the community will feel comfy. My husband and I felt very welcome. We visited first on a busy Saturday night, 8pm, with live entertainment. Great covers of pop, rock and country. We visited again on a Thursday evening, 6 pm, less busy but the staff was just as attentive. Our waitress was great! Krista I think. Had the White Chicken Chili, a rare find, and Perfect Chicken Tenders. The owner and manager were very attentive! Can't wait to come back the next time we visit Houlton, Maine! read more

Surprisingly good wings and tenders here. I only say surprisingly because they don't have much competition in Houlton. I had a little time to kill on my way back to Bangor and I'm always down for trying some wings. The bone in were really crispy and the "spicy garlic parmesan" sauce was perfect. The bad reviews for this place are from 5 and 6 years ago. All the recent reviews are positive. They've obviously got they're stuff together these days. I'll be back next time I'm in Houlton. read more

I stayed at the motel that this pub is attached to and since there's limited food options in the area, this was an easy choice. I was pleasantly surprised by the food and the decor. Tried the poutine app. and was impressed. There were excellent local beer choices too. Not sure I'll be back in the area any time soon but I recommend anyone in the area to stop in. There aren't a whole lot of options up this way but this place is a great find. The staff is very friendly, good selection of drafts and the margaritas are great. There are daily specials and live entertainment on certain days. It's attached to the Shiretown Inn (which is a nice place to stay if you're in the area.) For someone who just moved to the area I am glad that there is a local restaurant with yummy food close by. Would highly recommend if you're in the area. read more

Had to walk to the bar and order my own drinks, when I did get food it was cold and the waitress didn't seem to know what to do. My opinion people, there are better options in Houlton stay away. read more

Located at the back of the Shiretown Inn. The downunder lives up to its name. Limited menu, far less than other sports pubs, the food was disappointing for the price. We were first met by stares from the locals who apparently frequent the place, making you wonder why you are there. Everything is just loaded with grease, even a turkey sandwich. The fries were limp due to overloading with overused fryolator oil. We didn't want to even finish the meal. We noticed other tables where people left nearly full plates for good reason as the food was barely palatable. Service was slow even though the place was not that full. Save your money. The Irving Station across the street has better food. read more

Never again. I got a salad and the lettuce was limp. The waitress pulled it out of a refrigerator right in front of me. We are in Aroostook County. Fresh greens are available! Tons of onions, one tomato, not much else. Boyfriend ordered a steak. He sent three quarters of it back. I wanted to like it, just could not. read more

My guest and I dined there on an evening when business was slow. He had a cheeseburger that he said was "good," except that he requested medium and they cooked it to well done. He sent it back and they promptly cooked it properly. I ordered a salad, being a vegetarian, fully knowing that this was a bar and they likely would not have many vegetarian options. It was no problem at all. Salad is fine for me. But... right in front of me, just ten minutes after I ordered it, the waitress went to a small drink cooler and pulled out a small garden salad that was wrapped with plastic wrap. The lettuce was plain iceberg (with some rusty, red pieces,) half a tomato, a few cucumbers, an onion slice. I expected they would make the salad fresh, and most places now have a variety of lettuces, some spinach, watercress, etc. Why would they pull a salad out of a cooler that has surely been sitting there since the morning shift, right in front of a customer. It doesn't take that long to make a fresh salad. After hours in the cooler, the salad was limp. Not a good experience for every diner. read more

Three other tables were already seated and had their food, we sat and waited 25 minutes to just order our drinks. During this time two people came in and sat at one table. They actually received their drinks before we did. We did not have any bar order drinks, only soda and water. We ordered our food at the same time as we ordered our drinks. When our drinks did arrive the order was wrong and one of the drink cups was on filled three-quarters of the way full. We continued to wait for our food, by the time it arrived it was over an hour and half after ordering. Prior to it arriving I finally tracked down the waitress and asked her if it would be coming out soon, she proceeded with quite a tone of voice to tell me that the kitchen was backed up and it should be out soon. I called into question the kitchen being backed up as the only other tables with people when we arrived had already been served before our order was placed. Shortly after our food arrived a man at a table began to very loudly play a plastic kazoo, after he began his second "song" I went to ask the waitress if he could be asked to stop interrupting the rest of the diners, I was told after insisting that we could not even hear our own conversation at our table across the room that I would need to speak to the manager, I asked for him to be called and instead the bartender made excuses for it, refused to call the manager when I explained the multiple issues during our visit he said with a very rude tone of voice that he could discount our food and that the kazoo player should be leaving shortly (he was never asked to stop playing at all). When I finally received our check no discount was made on the bill at all. The service was extremely slow and the servers were very rude and unapologetic. I will NEVER set food in this establishment again and as it is located on the same property as the Shiretown Inn I will be directing any company to the area to Ivy's across the street instead.
