Walked in today for literally 4 seconds. Staff was incredibly rude they repeatedly told me to put my nearly empty drink in the cup section. I couldn't hear them because I was talking to someone. They proceeded to be snarky and make some jokes about it to themselves, really unprofessional and not necessary! I kindly said "oh sorry I didn't hear u the first time" they eased dropped on all of our conversations and had something to say then but nothing nice before that?? Righhhhttt rightttt. A welcoming, affordable, and cool comic store like this is such a rare gem these days! I'm so glad to be able to stop in occasionally for a new $1 comic, children's book, or rare music inspired comics anthology like I have lately. The staff have always been pleasant to speak with and knowledgable. If you're looking for a new comic and on a budget, there are rows of $1 comic boxes to look through. I've found some out of Marvel. And local creator ones too. If you're looking for a surprise gift for your four year old nephew, there are several sections of the store offering a variety of children's books. Friendly staff & still had so many free comics available from yesterday's First Saturday comic day so was able to grab some for my lil patients at work. Daughter loves her Manga books & collectibles & she's perusing until I said let's go!! lol. There was a 20 volume set for $180 although she already had 1-10 & was looking for the in next series which unfortunately they were out. Mid sized Figurines were $20-$45 and up. Bought a few board games here based off some of the employees and patrons recommendations. The staff here are so nice; not to mention this place is dog friendly which is a plus! They feed the pups and even have shop pups hanging around behind the counter! :3 The manga and other comics store collection is pretty massive on top of the board game collections they have. Dr. Comics has been a regular stop for me since my family moved to Oakland. I actually went so many times that my dad got me a gift card for Christmas. Staff are always so friendly and excited to share their tips and knowledge with you. In addition to a huge selection of comics, they have a great variety of board games and toys and figurines. Great Comics store on Piedmont Ave!! Going into this store brought me back to my youth, I was a big comic book reader. And they have stacks and stacks of everything thing Comics related. Books, figures, all types of memorabilia, they even have a life sized SpiderMan statue in here. Upon entering, they always greet you. And besides comics, they have games, videos, dvds, just a lot. I went here with my friend recently to pick up a chess board. They have a few different types of chess boards and the one we picked up was a travel board. It was quite alright with nice pieces and board that folds in half with a clasp. I love chess and was once a chess coach in Portland, OR. Friendly service. I wish we would have had more time to look yet they were closing when we arrived so only time to pick up the chess board before leaving. Had a fantastic experience yesterday in the shop; the gentleman who assisted us was super friendly, knowledgeable and helped us find perfect options for what we were looking for. The store was well stocked with very reasonable prices, we ended up finding some holiday gifts and will definitely return next time we are in Oakland. We had stopped into another game shop earlier in the day that was not friendly, lacking in stock and very expensive for the items they did have - not only did Dr. Comics actually have the items we wanted at a better price, the clerk that helped us could not have been better. Highly recommend for all your card, board game and puzzle needs! Huge graphic novel selection as well, although I didn't have time to really peruse it. read more

One of my favorite yearly traditions is Free Comic Book Day. For the past 6 years, my kid and I would line up waiting for our turn into said comic book store for a chance to get some comics and patronize our local businesses. But last year with Covid turning everyone's world upside down, the tradition was suspended and our favorite comic book store in Berkeley closed its doors after decades of being in business. I didn't know if i'd ever see another Free Comic Book day again. Fast forward to August 14, 2021, we're driving down Piedmont Ave and noticed a long line outside of Dr. Comics and Mr. Games. So I pulled over and we rushed over to see what was going on. The little kid in me leaped for joy when I discovered that Free Comic books day had returned. We took our place in line. The staff at Dr. Comics and Mr. Games were letting people in three at a time so when our turn came we walked in wide-eyed. Each person was allowed 6 comics and there was a separate section for adult comics. Admittedly, this was my first time in Dr. Comics and Mr. Games and the staff were all very helpful with helping my son to find some comics that met his interest. We are both suckers for anything that's Star Wars, Teen Titans, or Batman related comics. This store also had an assortment of board games. My ten year old loves to read but when it comes to comic book reading he can read for hours on end. Thanks to Dr. Comics and Mr. Games for bringing back the time honored tradition that is Free Comic Book Day and catering to the 10 year old in all of us. While Cape & Cowl is my go to for comics - given they are like 3 blocks away from me, whenever I am in Piedmont, I have to stop in Dr Comics & Mr Games. One of the oldest comic shops and game stores in Oakland/Piedmont, the displays will help remind you they are there, and of course when you walk in it's a situation of this place being far bigger on the inside than the outside. When you enter, you will most likely be greeted by one of the many helpful staff. To the left will be the counter, with Magic cards, dice, and other gaming supplies, while to your right will be board games, card games, and role playing games. A bit further will be the manga and Japanese toy section. If you need help, talk to the staff, but do browse. Past that in the middle will be the western toys: action figures, specialty statues, collectibles. And along the right side, to the back, and next to the stairs are the comics themselves. A few spots to note: the current and recent issues, as well as trades are against the right wall, but they do have back issue boxes. You may have to ask for help accessing them though. Likewise, in the back there is always an employee and they are usually the go to for asking for specific issues. Also in the far back is the discount center: trade paper backs, games, toys significantly marked down. Sometimes you can find a treasure or two back there. It used to be the adult section, but glad they've moved past that. Good selection of comics, great selection of games. If looking to whet your geeky thirst, hard to beat here. I subscribe to a few different titles here and have over the last 11 years. They also have the most cute gudetama squishies and keytai as well as sooooo many pop vinyls. They also host comic author and game creator events, and Free Comic Book Day each year. I'll list some of their sections off the top of my head to help people out. GAMES & ASSORTED (I'm not as familiar with this section)-- RPG die, RPG manuals, comic and game pins, D&D action figures, assorted action figures, board games (new, old, popular, and obscure), puzzles, card games, extension packs, and the clearence section (with games, comics, and assorted other things). COMICS/GRAPHIC NOVELS (when I say comics, I'm reffering to the classic stapeled paper thin comics; when I say graphic novels I'm refferring to longer comics that are bound in a book-like way)-- Classic newspaper comics collected, graphic novels for all ages, graphic novels for 8-12, graphic novels 12+, graphic novels 13+, Marvel & DC classic superhero comics/graphic novels, biography & non-fiction graphic novels, literature graphic novels (books turned into comics), on the right wall (when you walk in) a bunch of assorted comics, manga section, Staff Picks section, European comics section, one wall on the left (when you walk in, next to the manga section) that's like every graphic novel that didn't fit anywhere else, a section of comics/graphic novels collected, an 18+ section, an LGBTQ+ section within the 18+ section, a couple shelves (in the back) with graphic novels written by the classic comics writers (like once they had Neil Gaiman comics), a section of graphic novels about/understanding/how to make comics, a section of vintage comics (in the back left of the store, in catagorized boxes), graphic novels/comics by local authors, anthology graphic novels, a zine section (very cool, hidden in between the anthalogy/local authors shelf and clearence section), and the clearence section (with games, comics, and assorted other things). This is absolutely my favorite comic book store. Here are some of the things I really like about them: - Massive collection. They have tons of books - Great staff of comic lovers. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. After you walk in the staff treats you like your part of their big family of friends. If you want a recommendation they are very good at that. More importantly they are more focused on helping you find what you want, rather than trying to upsell you. - They have small label and alternative comics. They don't only carry the newest fad (they do have that) but they also include indie labels, LGBT, European artists, over 18, manga and much else. Some of everything here. - They have a whole section for local artists. They don't have a token handful of local artists, they have an entire section for them. - They have a very large discount section including great titles for half price and usually a decent selection of $1 books and magazines. I absolutely love this place. My only complaint is their lack of an online presence - I think a limited Facebook and small about.me page is about it. What a great comic book store. I and my oldest child came for a book signing by Disney animator Alex Hirsch, the creator of Gravity Falls. I particularly liked the mix of comics (graphic novels). My specialties are political/activist comics by illustrators like Joe Sacco. His book Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt was great. I also loved the unique board games. Btw, parking is free! I love that there's a comic book store walking distance from where I live. It really helps whenever I have money or time to look for back issues. Speaking of back issues, really love the helpful staff. They cater to everyone, from those who know nothing about comics and are looking for a gift to those who know what they want and are looking for back issues. They keep most of the good stuff upstairs but will GLADLY go find stuff for you. They also price the books very reasonably and I commend them for that. A lot of places like to price things on eBay sales, which isn't very realistic, and also pricing things off CGC sales also is unrealistic and unfair (Dr. Comics does not do that) They have a great selection of toys, houseware, pins, shirts, manga, and other collectibles. Located near a cvs, I like to come here on a Sunday afternoon when I need to go to cvs and the bf wants to look at board games. I can't tell you how many he has in his collection now. This place has all the board games that you would ever need. They also sell trading card holders which is what he likes to buy a lot. I love the layout of the place where you can just roam around and find new games to play. read more
