I've only been to Cape & Cowl once , I don't live in the area. But I definitely plan to return. It's one of the best comic shops I've ever been in, run by exceptional people. Very easy to see they've won an Eisner- a highly prestigious Comic Book industry award. They understand marketing, promotions, the store is well organized, well stocked, well lit, roomy and friendly. The service from the staff I get each time I walk in the store is superb! I came with my toddler(3 year old) and the staff was extremely welcoming locking and helpful; really made us feel like we belonged there and gave us some good suggestions. I bought two pins which was of interest The City and Dub Nation pins which were unique cause I don't think no else sells them. Well stocked store, great organization, helpful staff. I bought a few items for my older kids based on the recommendations of staff and the kids were so happy. I like there's a variety of genres, a few merchandise items like pops, and even a baby and kids section. There's plenty of paid parking around the shop. We haven't been to Cape and Cowl since the pandemic. When we stopped by today, it was a great surprise! They have expanded the comic book store! More displays, more comics and more figures. As a family, we all have different interests and we were helped by the wonderful staff. How do you know if it's a legit comic book store? You can talk shop about DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, and even Pokémon cards. What I love about this place is the service, the staff, the comics that I can't find anywhere including Amazon (which I had some bad deliveries of damaged goods). It's in my hand and I can take it home and enjoy it. The best part is that it reminds me of the comic book store I went to growing up as a kid. Where the owner and the people that worked there have knowledge of the products. We found everything we needed for this run and we definitely have some idea what to get on our next visit here. BEST COMIC STORE IN THE EAST BAY - This is about as good as it gets. Not only do they look a cut above most comic book stores (many look like they are still out the back end of a garage), but they do comics right! PRODUCTS: They have a great selection of books for every age. Nice kid selection up in front for both younger kids and kids who want something a little different than your average action comic book. Good but not overwhelming selection of graphic novels (some stores you have to swim through the graphic novels to find the monthly books). Nice selection of back issues. Great section of current books. SERVICE: Awesome! Everyone there is happy to help. They really know their comics. And they are friendly and attentive. I love they post staff recommendations (got me hooked on The Magic Order) and summarize good books to offer guests a chance to explore something different. ARRANGEMENT: Believe me this is a thing. So many comic stores arrange their books in some haphazard way and expect you to guess how it's laid out. Or they have floor to ceiling graphic novels and the comics are kind of forgotten. Not here. It's very easy to find new and recent books (they are labeled as such). It's organized logically (alphabetical). And comics are the focus. A great place to go. This is my store of choice even though others are closer. Parking can be a challenge in Oakland but it's worth it. read more

On a business trip? Staying in Old Oakland? Make sure to stop by Cape & Cowl Comics. It's easy walking distance from the major hotels (0.03 miles from The Marriot). That's about a 10 minute walk, but if you skip, you'll get there in 8! I happen to be in town for the Boys & Girls Club of Oakland - 28th Annual Salute to Youth Luncheon and Benefit Auction and since I didn't win the Draymond Green signed jersey, I found the next best thing. A local comic shop within walking distance. They have a personal relationship with Black Mask so they have exclusive covers. My local shops in Yolo/Sacramento County only got a total of 2 copies of Flash 22 (Lenticular - Finale of the Button Storyline). I went to 5 shops on new comic Wednesday to find a copy. My visit to C&C Comics was on Friday and they still had some copies available and the reason why ... they were only allowing people to purchase one copy. Super-cool! Today's pickups: - Flash 22 (Lenticular Cover) - Kevin Durant Collectible Figure (saved me about $5-7 on shipping and avoiding "Feebay") THE GOOD: - Walking distance from major hotels - Huge selection of silver age back issues and found some 12-centers too - "This Week" and "Last Week" books easily identified - Huge Funko POP! collection - Super-friendly guy when I was there and helpful. I was skimming the long boxes that were at floor level and he came over and gave me a small chair and said "save your back!" I'm gonna start this review off by saying, if I could give this business more than 5 stars, I would. I started reading/collecting comics around the beginning of the year and Cape & Cowl was the first store I bought comics from. The employees are super friendly and into what they do. It seems like they have read every comic they have at the store. They have great recommendations on comics and they are really great people. Cape & Cowl has new comics, old comics, comics in between, Funko POPs, Figurines, Action Figures, Mystery Minis, Graphic Novels, and anything else a comic fan could want. I've been here about a dozen times and I've had a wonderful experience every time. I've been to multiple other comic stores (even out of state!) and none of them have compared to Cape & Cowl. If you are a new or old comic book collector, Cape & Cowl is my number one recommendation! read more

I've been a customer with Cape & Cowl Comics off and on during the 4 years I've been in Oakland. Since we know have the lockdown in California, the store has a setup online with Comic Hub where you're able to pay for comics to be shipped or picked up. (Note: This is in addition to the official Cape & Cowl website where you could also pay for items to be shipped or picked up). Well, my spending money with the shop came to an end today with a bad customer service phone call with one of the employees and a follow-up with the manager where I definitely got a 'don't care' attitude (i.e. I'm just someone giving them money). At around 11:49 today I called the store to add to items that were ready to be picked up. I've done this a few times previously; I'm able to pay for the items online at my residence then pick them up when I pass by the store doing errands downtown. Yet, today I didn't speak with Kevin (who usually helps me with no problem) or even the manager/owner Eitan. It was an employee I've spoken in-person with as well as on the phone. He seemed confused and not really engaged as he couldn't comprehend that the official site doesn't allow one to log back in once the passwords or changed. Hence, the reason I call in to have items put into the 'other' site Comic Hub. He seemed to have taken down the first item, but then he wonders if said items are attainable or available since they had construction going on and there was plastic over items. I made it clear, over the phone, that I can pay for the items and pick them up later. Also, if the items are on the official website, I would THINK they would be available; it wouldn't make much sense to put items on a site for sale and they're NOT available. I've even told him about the issues (pun not intended) I've had where I've pre-ordered something on Comic Hub and never got them. (So now: I've run into problems with the official site as well as Comic Hub). He was insistent I go on the official site to buy the items I wanted even though I voiced my issues about not being able to log on. So while he may or may not have taken the comic (one of four items I wanted to add to items I already paid for) he then just tells me he's busy. A tone that could have been so much better, no matter if you're multitasking. (I've worked in customer service, myself. I even can understand if a person is overworked and doing the best they can -- this guy wasn't professional). I emailed the store and told them they lost a customer. This was followed up with a phone call around 1:01 pm where I spoke to the manager/owner Eitan to see about a refund with comics I already paid for. His reply to the email and phone call was simply to the effect: 'We're sorry about your experience and sorry to see you go.' I followed up with the email to see if I can get confirmation of the refund, but no answer. However, just as I posted this review, I noticed I got a refund via Paypal. read more

...New business in Downtown Oakland... Eitan is the owner, and just sold me an awesome piece of art! Clockwork Orange type of piece if youre in the know. This store looks pretty cool and is brand new as of 10 am today. They are still putting things up and out. The store has comic books, figurines, collectible cards, comic character piggy banks, and art to name some of the stuff I saw while browsing. I got a pair of sunglasses with my purchase and the owner was really cool and engaging with everyone the whole time. I will have to come back when they have placed all their merchandise and art work out for our viewing pleasure :) Cheers to comics and art! read more

Harris State Building and walking to our parked car two doors away from this business, my husband and I noticed Cape & Cowl Comics. The last time we were in this area almost six months ago, we did not notice Cape & Cowl. Reason: it was not opened for business at that time. According to the owner, Eitan Manhoff, Cape & Cowl Comics opened five months ago. Eitan is cool, friendly and personable. While talking to him, I mentioned a woman by the name of Patti who has a sports cards and comics in Alameda and is somewhat grumpy and moody when I go there. He has heard about her. I guess her reputation precedes her. Although I am not an enthusiastic collector of comic books, still the place has quite a set up of a vast collection of superheroes comic books, some action figures, magnets, pins, cards, limited selection of tee shirts and toys. The ambiance is pretty rad and comfortable. The inventory of comic books is very organized. The store is well lit and quite spacious. The location of Cape & Cowl Comics is on the corner of 16th & Clay, which is about 1/2 block away from the State Building. I can just imagine there is a likely possibility that some of the male state employees coming in here during lunch break getting comic relief. It's a great place to browse and hang out. Having a bad day at work? Stressed out because the boss is breathing down your back? Take a break, come on down to Cape & Cowl, howl with laughter and then get back to work. With me, if I decide to return to Cape & Cowl, I don't have to go back to work. I am retired from the labor market, so I get to enjoy and have fun. read more

Really nice shop with good selection, might have to park a block or two away sometimes. Too bad the staff are obnoxious hipster jerks though ( specifically owner Eitan, the young guy that looks a like younger version of Eitan and the woman with pink reddish hair.) I've come into the store 4 or 5 times this year. I understand their desire to greet people and look at people when they come into the store especially since they are located in oakland and we are living in the golden age of age of retail theft that is supposedly causing the downfall of society. But what they are doing to me is different. They have engaged in ageism towards me and judge me based on my old haggard appearance( in mid 30s but look at least 10 years older bc of hair loss, lines and circles around eyes and bad lines around mouth) They either look at me like i'm a homeless weirdo criminal that just stumbled in from the street or an old guy that doesn't know anything about comics and is definitely not shopping for myself. Their obnoxious tone, questions, and looks gives it away. They engaged in the same borderline rude behavior when i when i browsed their stand at the brewery con. There is no way i could be someone that has had a casual interest in comics for 10 years, comes to this store all the way from concord or goes out my way to stop by when I accompany my 73 yr old mother when she has business affairs in the city. It becomes much harder to enjoy the comics and divorce the nice store from the staff. So basically to be treated with respect in the store You have to be a hipster cool young person or a person in his 30s to 40s that looks his age or younger than his age. If you fit that criteria you could go in this store one time, browse casually and be treated with more respect than me, a old homeless weirdo that has gone to the store 4 or 5 times already and spent at least 20 dollars every time. (one of these days I'll have to finally get someone at a store to explain to me how someones facial structure and aged appearance makes them "look homeless".) read more

Downtown Oakland finally has a legit comic book store! Great selection of old and new comic books with even a section for children's comic books. They have a good selection of blind boxes along with Marvel pop figures and Justice League action figures. If you don't see what you're looking for they can special order it for you. The back wall has a lot of discounted older comics. (the new avengers, black widow, batgirl, batman and variety of Marvel, DC as well. The owner is very friendly and knowledgeable. they sell resealed pokemon boosters for twice MSRP. its just so awful because holorare pokemon cards are really inexpensive but despite this they still lift em and fill every overpriced and glue resealed pack with nonholo trash. kids are looking to get something special and you take that away from them. good comic selection, though. read more

I was very impressed at how organized and clean the store is. I also loved the interior layout. Went in for the first time yesterday and was well worth the trip. I went to others in the Bay, which was rated on yelp as 4.5 stars or above but frankly not as impressed as I was with Cape and Cowl. Back issues-- had a great mix and priced fairly OG editions--reasonably priced, especially the Spiderman copies Graphic Novels-huge selection Wished they would sell the skateboards that had the original art...they rocked!! Great comic book store. Nicely designed. Not in a huge place, but doesn't feel cluttered. Good selection of new and exciting editions out front. Employees were all quite nice. Great selection of Adventure Time editions in the kid section. Excited to read the new Batman White Knight and Adventure Time edition I got. Pin selection was worth noting for its epicness. I will definitely be coming back to this spot. I've been a regular at 6 different local comic stores across the past decade (I move a lot...). None of them have been anywhere near as amazing as Cape & Cowl. They are knowledgeable; friendly; enthusiastic; committed to the Oakland community; and just generally feel more like a civic institution than a business. I love dropping by here. The only negative thing I can say is they're so friendly that sometimes you can wait in line longer than you might in other stores because they're chatting up the people ahead of you. Support your local comic shops! Cape and Cowl has been my go to since a majority of my local shops have left, closed down or relocated. They have everything you need as far as titles and selections of graphic novels. They have a great selection of toys, related apparel and more. They've teamed up with Comic Hub for preordering your books and needs. When your items come in, you are notified, pre-pay and should be ready for pick up in an hour. I long for the day I can walk back in and pick up a random book or issue on whim just to try out. The arrangement now, is you have to know what you're looking for. But the owners and staff are super helpful and are willing to accommodate and go the extra mile to help you out. What I also love about this place is that they promote local indie and creator owned material. Even DIY books made by kids, just like Comic Relief back in the days. And even more, they are deeply rooted in the community and work with local business to help each other out. I can't wait for businesses to be fully open again.
