Located on Castro Valley Blvd, Crush Comics has a nice mix of new comics, and back issues. You'll find most new comics and current issues (past year) organized neatly on the left as you enter the store. If you need help finding anything, just ask the staff behind the counter. They're really helpful. They have a few long boxes set up in the front with 1 dollar comics and 5 dollar graphic novels in the front of the store. Singles are kept in the 1$ long boxes which include a lot Marvel, Image, Valiant, Ultraverse comics from the 90s, you'll also find some DC and vertigo titles as well. Sifting through these boxes gave me flashbacks of when I was a comic collector in the 90s. Towards the back left and back wall of the store, you'll find shelves of graphic novels, omnibus, and other collected editions. Back issues are set up on a large table in the back. You can find a mixed selection of different titles from Silver age to modern. I found surprising inventory of certain title runs. I have a bit more exploring to do in this store. Crush carries good comic storage stuff - boxes, bags and boards (BCW brand) on the right side of the store. read more

Nice little shop located at a T intersection of a busy street. There's a medium sized parking lot next door for your convenience. It's probably been twenty plus years since my last visit. Clean store with mainly new and modern books but they do have some long boxes of 80s and 90s back issues. I needed one larger Mylar and board to fit a pulp magazine and the store manager/employee kindly measured out the dimensions and let me take a single poly bag and board at no charge. Great gesture. 've been coming to this comic store since 2016 and have always received amazing service from the entire team each time I've gone in. They have a large collection of comics (Single issues, trades, HC & omnibus) The team is very knowledgeable on all things comics and the store also sells trading cards (Pokemon), funko pops and some manga. If there is something they dont have in stock, they can order it for you and will give you a call once it's come in. Crush Comics is conveniently located in my city. It's a heavily comic book focused store. I saw a wide selection of new issues to pick from. The TCG selection was limited to the most current selection from what I seen, but that's ok with me. We were greeted upon entrance and offered service right when we stopped at the counter. The service is bad I was buying a pack of cards and the employee was freaking out of me buying them. I did told the employee that I'm going to use the cards for art. He was freaking out about it saying some of the cards are rare and valuable. Why sell it to me then. I'm never buying anything there ever again. Crush is a fantastic comic shop. One of the friendliest shops I've ever frequented in my decades of going to comic shops. For anyone who's been to a few, you know some owners who can be unwelcoming or unfriendly or insular. It's the exact opposite at Crush. Josh and Andrea and everyone who works there (I used to see Cole all the time and now I run into Tyler too) is immediately welcoming and easygoing. Their positive attitude and inclusive atmosphere reflects in who shops there too. I've seen every kind of fan shop here and it makes me happy to see. They have a great selection of new books every Wednesday, a huge stock of graphic novels, single issues, and wall books. They just started carrying Games Workshop / Warhammer 40k / Age of Sigmar stuff too! Really excited to be able to pick up comics and hobby stuff in the same trip now. I picked up the new 9th ed Core book and there was a line to get Indomitus before the store opened today. If you're looking for a box, give them a call though- they might still have some. Visited yesterday and had a fantastic experience. They had a large number of old trades in stock, which was perfect since that's exactly what I was in the mood to pick up. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to get and the employees there were super helpful in talking about my taste in comics and what I've already read and pointing me in the right direction. To top it off, I was very impressed with their setup as far as Covid precautions. They greeted me with hand sanitizer at the door, their aisles were moved far apart enough to allow for lots of space, and there were very clear markings on the floor to keep appropriate distance from others. As a customer, it felt great to go to a business that takes our safety seriously. It was a great experience and I left with a new graphic novel that was exactly what I was looking for! read more

My 5 year old son who is all about Fortnite right now was really wanting the new Zeropoint comic. Since this mom is a procrastinator at times and his birthday is this weekend I needed to get my hand on a copy. I called around and most were sold out and not holding which I totally understand. Josh from Crush Comics messaged me back they had it in stock and was going to be opened at 1pm. I made the drive over and got my hand on a copy for him. Due to Covid they are taking precautions and limiting people going in. Cant wait to go back and look at more comics! I think I have a love/hate thing going on with this place. This has been my go to comic store since I was 14 and where I got my giant squishable panda too (when they carried them a long time ago). There are rows of comics and the more popular ones displayed in the front. If you ever want some funko pops, there's a giant display with them (a few exclusive ones too!) When I was younger, I didn't notice the customer service much and only cared about the comics and stuff... nowadays, the younger guy at the register is amazing and super helpful but the owner makes me feel like I'm trespassing his store. I'm not a diehard comic fan but I do like my occasional dose of Gambit or Marvel comics (especially with the new tsum tsum covers on them). The owner pretty much only glares unless it's a super frequent diehard customer that he knows well. There are no "hi" or "welcome" from him whatsoever and I'd actually prefer not to go in the store if he's in the front. As for calling/messaging the store, I think personally think it's best to call since they don't seem too active on their Facebook page. Final Thoughts: Aside from the customer service "glare" from the owner, I love this shop to death! I'm sure I'm not the only once since I've seen a mom grab her kid out of the store after getting stared down by the owner. read more

I have previously written a review of Crush Comics when I was just starting out my comic collection. Now that it's been a few years, I need to re-visit and also recommend once again Crush Comics here in Castro Valley. Back in March, the whole world shut down due to the COVID pandemic. As a comic collector, we come to expect those weekly Wednesday releases of our favorite titles. Many businesses suffered tremendously and even had to close up shop for good. I'm not sure how exactly Crush was affected by COVID, but I will say this much. Crush has a vibrant presence on social media. Their Instagram LIVE videos of comic book auctions, in-shop shenanigans (e.g.; hot sauce taste testing with Tyler, primarily, and others - Josh can handle the spicy spicy from what I've seen), and other email contact really kept us regular customers in the loop. As soon as they were allowed, we were able to start curbside pick-up each week. Ultimately, Crush re-opened their doors to a limited number of customers at a time, and I've always observed all safety protocols in the shop from administering hand sanitizer to friendly reminders about social distancing. The Instagram videos still pop up and the owners - Josh and Andrea - speak to their regulars like family. The comic book industry has roared back to life and you ought to do yourself a favor and bring your teenage son over to the shop to check out a few titles. I'm a teacher of 20 years in Castro Valley and one thing I'm told often by the families that I teach, girls AND boys, is that it's tough to find something for their child to read. Well, comic books are an AMAZING gateway to cultivate a lifelong love of reading. Crush has something for all tastes and backgrounds and cultures and reading levels. I am also pleased with the emails Crush sends out to those on the mailing list of new releases each week. I haven't made it a foot into the shop before I'm being presented with my requested comics. They're ON IT and I'd like to personally send a shout out to Tyler who is a human encyclopedia and is up-to-date on every book, TV show, movie, and mini-series that has been, is currently, or will be released. Great family run store with excellent service and expertise. Their staff is great with recommendations. Comic collection wise, they regularly submit stuff for grading and can carry the occasional eye opening key comic. I've submitted many comics through Crush and have been happy with the results. Crush Comics recently added board games, War Hammer miniatures and paints to their stock. Josh gives painting advice and helped me start up a new hobby to fill up my slow season. read more

Let me first preface this by stating that I am a teacher and have only come to this store with a ton of students, not for myself really. Today, we did a field trip to the Chabot Theater and then over to Crush. 13 children ranging from 7 - 14 years old, marched into the store and spent a good hour perusing the shelves, searching for comics, playing at the vending machines, and opening their packs of Yu-Gi-Oh cards in front of their All-ages section. In general, my kids are super well behaved, but that amount of kiddos can be taxing on even the most patient of person. The three employees took it all in stride; answering the myriad of questions, helping them find the perfect comic or graphic novel, and waiting patiently as they dished out their dollars and cents. All of the staff were so helpful and I couldn't have appreciated it more. The atmosphere is laid back and it seemed that almost every customer that walked in there either knew the employees or the owner- which says a lot about how they treat their clientele. The store was clean and very well organized. All-age readers were easy to find and many of my students were able to take a deep dive into more comics in the back. The kids loved it too. One said she would give it a "ten star" (Which I am assuming is a very high honor). The rest are stoked that we get to come back again. Cheers! read more

I stopped by here on my vacation to CA and had a wonderful visit! They have you sanitize your hands before entering and make sure you're wearing a mask, which made me feel safe to browse. Both people working greeted me in a friendly manner and were helpful but not overbearing. The store itself is very clean and well organized, and even has a half off trade paperback shelf. There's a solid selection ranging from standard mainstream stuff to lesser known indie titles, plus OGNs and young adult & kids sections. If I was local, I'd definitely go back! read more

This is probably my favorite comic book shop in the Bay Area, The crew working always has my pull-list ready and are very friendly to talk to. Debate comic books, movies and TV shows related to the genre. Not every comic book shop will put in the effort that Crush Comics does. As a customer who just wants to buy comics books quickly became a regular at this location. The shop is always clean, welcoming, and organized. It always a joy to see what gem made it's way into the shop that day of the week. Usually a CGC certified variant of some kind. You can also have your books CGC certified from this location witch is convenient. I recently went back with my kids after watching a movie next door. The people working their were a lot more helpful and very friendly. Looks like the new ownership has made a strong effort to work on customer service. The shop itself looks good and it seems like they have and are trying to clear out some stuff that may have been sitting around. Looking forward to going back with my kiddos. I've gone here many times in the last few years with my kids. Usually before or after a movie since it is right next door. I usually buy a couple of comics because I know my kids are reading the comics and it is a business. The younger guy(s) that is usually their never say a thing and is real nice. We just went recently before a matinee. We were there for less than minutes when this older guy (owner?) told my 11yo "this isn't a library". I heard this as I was looking for a couple of comics to buy. He was a d!ck so I told my kids to put down their books and we left. A wonderful family-owned comic shop. They have a great selection of back issues. Every person that works here is happy to talk comics and help you find what you're looking for. My boyfriend and I both have our boxes here and pick up our comics weekly. If they receive a shipment of comics from a local collector they'll always let us know sometimes before they're even priced. They always give us a deal/competitive pricing on their comics. Neither of us live in Castro Valley and have comic shops in our own towns but go those extra miles to pick up our weekly comics at Crush, have a nice chat, and hopefully come home with a few cool back issues to fill in our collection! This comic shop is one of my favorite places to (if not my absolute favorite place) to frequent in the Bay area. Josh and Andrea Hunter (the owners and proprietors of Crush Comics) along with their merry band of comic peddlers (Tyler, Cole and Billy...I'm looking at you) are among some of the most amazing, knowledgeable, friendly, delightfully nerdy, compassionate, considerate, lovable, and hilarious community building people that I have ever known. Since taking over the shop a few years ago they have quickly turned this brick and mortar comic shop into an indispensable neighborhood community gathering place. They have made an enthusiastic commitment to encouraging and promoting childhood literacy and stewarding a love for the comic book art form and storytelling. Josh and Andrea have also welcomed new and future aspiring talents from the community to be seen and heard and have given them a place to showcase their art and tell their stories. My 13 year old son is among those kids who have a comic book that adorns a place on the shelves at Crush as do I myself have art on their walls and have been welcome to share my art not just as part of their shop but also at their events. Crush also, of course, is a place where you can keep up with all the fantastical things happening in the world of comics; gods becoming cosmic heralds, alien invasions, the ongoing adventures of a certain dark protector who given the time to plan can overcome any foe (just ask his fans, they WILL defend the pointy eared vigilante to their graves). Pick these stories up at Crush now and in a few years when that story hits the silver screen, you can be amongst us lucky nerds who can say with pride "I've read that" and then turn around and have a conversation with the folks at Crush that could potentially last forever but ultimately feel like no time has passed at all. You'll be talking about that one time Cap lifted the hammer during Endgame, or arguing the merits of the original Star Wars trilogy over the prequel trilogy, or contemplating what happened to poor little broom boy on Canto Bight at the end of the Last Jedi and before you know it 2 hours have passed. It's an awesome feeling, I assure you. And if you're thinking to yourself, "I'm not really a comic book reader, I have no reason to go to Crush", I would argue that there is a comic book out there for everyone. There is so much more to comics than just capes and tights and pointy eared emo billionaires. Do you like ghosts? There's a comic for you. Fascinated by serial killers or true crime stories? Comics, toys, and comics oh my! There's really not much to say about comic book shops. You could either say, "place was great" or "they didn't have the book I wanted" or "their toy selection was fantastic". I am going to say that this place is a SOLID comic book shop. Period. Plenty of copies of the new releases and a ton of back stock on the old stuff as well. They had a wide variety of toys for collectors. That's a definite plus. Major kudos to the staff. Super friendly and easy to talk to and they were definitely very knowledgable. I'm a bit on the late side of things, and I had asked them about a certain book and they were spot on to it. Also, they provide bags and boards next to the new releases so you can wrap them up as soon as you pick them up. That's definitely a major plus! My one draw back and it's totally not a huge thing to drop a star on them for is that parking kinda sucks. Street parking on CV Blvd isn't the best and kindest. But I'm ok with it.
