So, my experience with Dr. Gupta was actually quite opposite of what most reviews claim here. I had extensive gallstone damage and Dr. Gupta was great at diagnosing and treating. I am very satisfied with his service. He was always nice and took me seriously so thats awesome. During my last appointment he was five minutes and apologized profusely. HOWEVER, after my most recent experience with the office I will certainly NOT be going back. I was referred to him in the ER in 2020. I was in surgery for about 9 months (every 6 weeks). I have been trying to get in touch with him since Nov 2020 (exactly 3 years) and so far I have only been able to get connected to the office twice. I give up. Plenty of other qualified doctors in the area. There's no way he is this bad at maintaining a competent office staff and phone line department in 2023. A pigeon would have successfully arrived in 3 years with my request but not his office staff. Sidenote, I referred him to my husband who got through to his office on the first attempt (miracle) and scheduled a tele-appointment in 2021. We waited for 30 mins for him to get on the line just to find out that the office never informed us that he had decided to cancel appointments and go on a vacation. According to them, they had called us but we had never answered. read more

My GI for several years even though it's a drive from Ashburn to Bethesda. Located in what looks like a house , parking can be a challenge but the next house over allows you to park. Have to call ahead and most likely wait in the car . Dr Gupta has done several procedures and always treated me well, listening to issues and developing medical plans to get me back whole. Please hear me out. There has to be some kind of miscommunication with the office and the doctor, and he wouldn't even let me explain our situation, which is unfair, unprofessional, and RUDE. My dad went into the ER beginning of the last month (12/4) and then was recommended to Dr. Gupta for a consult and colonoscopy procedure. We called and was scheduled to talk to him on 12/11. Everything was fine and he said we'd get a phone call soon from the office to schedule the procedure. Days later we haven't heard anything? I tried calling again on 12/21 and the front desk told me someone will call that day and if not to call back on 12/23. Uh... no one reached out. So I called on the 23rd, and the line hung up on me. I called at 12:30pm and was hoping to leave a Voicemail, but the line cut and said goodbye?? I understand that it's Christmas week, but my dad is in pain... They finally called back on 1/5 in the morning (wow it took 4 weeks to schedule an appt for a patient that's literally on the verge of dying, yknow?) and scheduled for the 1/13 but I told them to hold it off. They just scheduled him anyway. And then I tried calling back few minutes later cuz I found out from my dad that he already scheduled with another specialist because he was in so much pain and he couldn't wait any longer (which is understandable). I call them and their line did the same thing before and cut to say goodbye?? Fast forward to today, the front desk called to confirm but I told them to cancel because my dad is seeing someone else. NOW, I WOULD ASSUME this is when they should let the doctor know about this, because he called me at 4pm and left a message assuming that were still seeing him tomorrow? I called him back, and said we cancelled the appointment and he got all sassy with a bad attitude on me, saying "So do you think this is appropriate and professional of you to just cancel the day before of the appointment?" I responded back, "I've tried calling before but your office wouldn't pick up--" "No no no, our office line always picks up, and because you're canceling last minute we're gonna send a bill home, OKAY!" I tried explaining how it took too long for my dad and he would just cut me off and pretty much said that it was MY fault for calling last minute to cancel. I mean, it's just not fair. He came off being super rude and inconsiderate? Please don't go see him. Or that office in general. I don't want any more new patients coming to him, only to be emotionally abused. From the first appointment I thought he would be understanding and considerate, but I take that all back. read more

I wanted to update my earlier review because of something that had happened with Dr. Gupta that still sticks with me to this day. Ten years ago I was going through breast cancer, surgery and radiation and I had an appt with Dr. Gupta and he asked how I was doing and I told him that Im tired all the time due to the stress and radiation treatment. He smugly looked at me and said "radiation treatment doesn't cause fatigue". I was so shocked by his dismissiveness and I truly regret not saying to him "Oh yeah, have you had cancer and treatment before". and giving him my middle finger and walking out....which is what I should have done. read more

I was admitted to suburban hospital on Saturday at 5 AM and this doctor was one of the two gastroenterologist... I have seen him before and he is horrible! I actually had forgotten just how bad he was until I had him yesterday. So dr. Gupta (gastroenterologist) came in for literally 35 seconds and then left. So I got up doubled over in pain went out to the nurses station and insisted he comes back and gives me more time. So he came back in with two nurses, one of which was with the first doctor that came in this morning who had said that I had a dilated bile duct. dr. Gupta said no I do not have a dilated bile duct, to which I said "wouldn't that be concerning to you that doctors are spreading misinformation to your patient?" his response was "I can't tell you anything about him I can only speak to myself."Quite honestly none of them act like they care about the patients at all. And I told that to all three of them. Tuesday, April 13 If you ever are in a situation and need a gastroenterologist do not let Gupta be your doctor... He has the worst bedside manner I have ever seen... he is very cavalier and dismissive in his tone... and I have executed a request that only Dr. Bakhshi, his partner, touch me. This is not the first second or third time I have heard complaints about Gupta. I think I need an ERCP I know this pain... But Gupta said "well we've already been through this and you know that's not what you need and even if you did need that, we couldn't do it here... ". He is just so rude. So I have been here for four days and literally nothing has been done to help resolve this pain. I am not the first not even the third patient who has had problems with Gupta... You do not ever want him in charge of your medical records. Bakhshi is the ONLY one you want Dr. Gupta lied straight to my face because they absolutely do ERCP's at suburban hospital I found that out because I ended up back in suburban Wednesday evening and they did an ERCP on Thursday. Okay, so this is a preliminary review based on my initial visit: After years of half-fast doctor's farms to manage my Crohn's disease, I found myself in suburban ER with bad pain and symptoms. I was in between gastros, and getting pretty hopeless. The ER doc told me if he had to see a gastro, dr Gupta is who hed want. Called the next day and was seen by the end of the week. Right away I felt comfortable. He and a partner work out of a house on old Georgetown. It's not fancy, but you don't feel like you're care is being assembled in a factory! He himself escorted me to his office where we TALKED for 45 minutes. He wanted to know everything, and was nonjudgmental and receptive to opinions and anecdotes. I actually felt like a human collaborator to my treatment!!!! He was very kind. I go in for a colonoscopy tomorrow and am cheered by his use of modern prep methods (seems like if a doctor is willing to try the latest colon prep, he'd probably be willing to try the latest crohns meds!). read more

Not my first rodeo, but definitely my first wretched experience. This is my third time in the hospital for Ulcers. The most unpleasant part of my painful and lurid episode that lead me to Suburban Hospital, was dealing with doctor Gupta. Im fine with having a doctor without any level of empathy, however I am not fine having it translate to complete unprofessionalism. Chain of events went down like this: 1- Threw up over half my body blood supply at once, landed in the hospital. 2- Dr. Gupta came in with a smile, but without his doctors hat. Saw me for about 2 minutes max and walked out leaving me clueless and with a bunch of questions. I'm at a point where I need a blood transfusion to stay alive and this guy comes in talking with me all casual while giving me no medical substance. Mind you I have not ate one thing all day and they put me on a fast starting around 12 pm when I came in, till 1pm next day. The purpose of my fast was to prepare me for a procedure in the AM which was confirmed by other doctors and nurses. I was cool until 11am next day where I had to ask, what happened to my procedure. This is when the doctor starts getting offensive, defensive, exceedingly unprofessional, and furthermore oblivious to the details of my hospitalization which he should have been informed about. 3- Dr. Bakhshi, who doctors named as his "assistant", or "partner", or whatever the relation, came to pay me a visit in the hospital and tell me that we will be doing the operation the next morning. So I am sitting here thinking, what the hell was the point of fasting for 24 hours???? Obviously me and my mother were curious and concerned. My mom started asking Bakhshi a bunch of questions which were followed by very vague answers. He gave me the number for Gupta. 4- I called Gupta to ask him some simple questions to find out what is going on. I did not call yelling or accusing or anything. And oh my god. Gupta turned into something similar to a demonic figure blasting me with outrageous comments and not allowing me to talk or ask a question without cutting me off. The way he was talking to me sounded like he wanted to come into the hospital and have a fist fight with me. Spent extreme verbal abuse to my end, and mind you im already stressed enough. Trying to argue with me and not taking responsibility for any of his actions. Additionally, he began to insult my mother to me, and also said that I was representing my mother. Well despite what he may thing, I am the ill one in bed here, im not representing anyone but myself. My mother was representing me. And I am the only one who has authority to discuss these matters with the doctors. Therefore even if my mother was running around screaming at everyone, which she was not (was very calm and respectful), Gupta should not be treating his patients and family with disrespect. He proceeded to pass the buck onto Bakhshi about scheduling and said he didn't know what was going on or when anything was going to happen. He was playing stupid or he really has no idea what goes on with his patients. Either way he portrayed himself to me as an illogical, unethical, disorganized, greedy, and impulsive person. I don't know why people say he has a good reputation because he did not show himself to be someone of high caliber stature to me. On the phone he sounded like a punk jock of high-school age. Would never thought this guy has a medical degree from his conveyance. Furthermore, he concluded our conversation by telling me he didn't feel like talking about this, then hung up on me. 5- Finally got my procedure done and left. It doesn't end there.... After my procedure the doctor didn't come see me to tell me what was going on or what he saw. Its been over a week and I still didn't get a follow-up call or any communications. There is NO CARE for patients to any extent other than milking that commission. I sense a lot of greed and lack of pride in craftsmanship. I see the other bad reviews on here and can fully relate. I see the good reviews and cannot see why there is a great deal of variance other than the fact they must be friends and family members leaving reviews. Believe me I consolidated these events with a family friend who is a Gastro and other close friends that are high level medical professionals that are retired and teaching at med school; who agree with the issues we had with all of the above. My advice to Gupta and team. Do your job. You don't have to like it anymore, and its ok to be greedy, but don't let it show through practice. You don't have to kill us with kindness, but at least respect us. And finally, mistakes and miscommunications happen, but take responsibility for them and be humble. You are dealing with lives, not machines. read more

Dr. Gupta is a great Gastroenterologist. He spent time to answer all of my questions and really made me feel comfortable. He is very smart and explained things thoroughly in a way that I could understand. His office staff was very nice as well. They explained the time line of when I would hear back to schedule my colonoscopy and they even offer covid testing. I have many friends and family members who go to Dr. Gupta and they are also very satisfied! I question those who have left a bad review here! read more

Dr. Gupta follows my mother's care after an admission to Holy Cross. He is wonderful, has an excellent bedside manner, is very calm and friendly. During the work-up process for my mother he communicated with me several times on the phone within hours of my leaving a message. He has exhibited genuine concern for our situation and I would definitely recommend him. His office is small (located near the NIH) but the staff has been very helpful obtaining records and getting messages to him. I appreciate their kindness, as dealing with a sick parent is stress enough. I'm sorry to see the other poor reviews. My experience with Dr. Gupta has been a good one. read more

On January 24th I had my first consult meeting with Dr. Naveen Gupta. He reassured me that it most likely was an infection but ordered a stool test anyways just to examine if anything else may have been wrong.I was given a clear container with a white top that looked like it could be used for a urine same and sent on my way.My next scheduled appointment was set for February 3rd. On Thursday,February 2nd, I went to LabCorp to get my stool examined as he ordered. However when LabCorp examined his orders they were confused. They understood all his orders except for one, the Cidifacil order. They exclaimed that for my stool tests I was given the wrong containers. They proceeded to fax over my information to Dr. Naveen Gupta in inquiry for him to disclose what exactly he wanted. I'm not quite clear on the confusion. I believe they were wondering if it was Cidifacil A or B. A series of calls were made to the receptionist who proceeded to act confused on the matter. I was told the doctor was not supposed to be in till about 1. Which means I waited from 10:30 to about 2 o'clock to resolve matters. Even after 1, the receptionist claimed that the doctor simply was not in and would try to assist us by faxing over the information as soon as possible. LabCorp suspected that she did not know what the test was or the correct containers to hold the stool in. This is information that as a receptionist for a gastroenterologist should have known. Four hours and about 7 calls later, I was sent on my way with the supposed proper materials from LabCorp. This included two tubes with solution in it two tubes without solution and a nice container to ensure that the process was as comfortable and hygienic as possible. Upon leaving LabCorp, I called to let the receptionist at Dr. Naveen Gupta's office know that I would not be able to maybe my appointment set for February 3rd because I still had no information on what exact stool test I was supposed to be taking. The new appointment was then set for February 8th. The day after my LabCorp fiasco,February 3rd, (which also happened to be the day I was to head in for my followup appointment before it was canceled) I called LabCorp to see if they had heard anything from Dr. Naveen Gupta's office. They regrettably informed me that they hadn't. After getting off the phone with them, I called Dr. Naveen's office again. I knew that he would be in. The receptionist then proceeded to tell me that he was in with a patient and could not come to the phone. I told her I would wait till he wasn't with a patient anymore, afterall the information that I needed would have only taken a literal minute to correct. After waiting 20 minutes on the phone, I was told again that Dr. Naveen was with a patient and to have a good day. They never followed up with what tests I was to take. Although my initial meeting with him was friendly, they are terrible at getting back to you about important tests. Seeing that health is a very important matter I'd suggest not going to this Dr if you would like to get a diagnosis in a timely manner. read more

In a sea of dismissive, accusatory doctors, he is a rare example of a true professional - knowledgable, communicative and friendly are words I would use to describe him. I'm appalled by some of the descriptions of others experiences. I wish all my doctors would be as wonderful as Dr. Gupta. I've been seeing him for over 2 years. He takes my concerns seriously, and managed to diagnose problems that my prior gastroenterologist did not. I've found his office staff to be the best - very professional and responsive. Worst office "bedside manner" visit ever - regardless of whether the diagnosis is right or wrong. Walked into the office and - without examination but after some poor Asian "assistant" kid who wants to be a doctor sometimes takes a half hour of useless information into a laptop - ushered into the office with Gupta immediately saying "You won't like me when you leave this office, but you'll be dead in 6 months." Nice, huh. Proceed to rattle off rapid fire instructions about getting bloodwork this coming Monday, seeing a couple of other doctors for various (referral) reasons. One of his orders was "if you don't do everything I tell you to do (reminds me of Hitler) then I don't want to see you again." So then, despite the fact that he says I'm dead in 6 months unless I completely change my lifestyle (and become a home bound hermit) he STLL wants to do a colonoscopy and endoscopy. Think it through; this is just pure money grabbing greed to feed his pocket. Why do this if I'm dead in 6 months? Only for his self monetary benefit. This guys a rip off. Avoid at all costs. Hands down Dr Naveen Gupta has been outstanding to work with and the level of care provided our loved one has been exceptional. He is easy to understand, knowledgeable, patient and kind. In fact I truly believe that had it not been for his willingness to connect with the patient and the family and to take the extra time needed to help us understand the complexities of my aunt's ongoing conditions and complications, that she would not have made it thru each and every challenge she has faced in a year long struggle to recover from surgery. This has been ESPECIALLY complicated during Covid where no one could see doctors and many patients were left stranded. Dr Gupta not only filled in the gaps but he enabled us to understand everything happening each step of the way so we could be proactive. He is extremely patient and his bedside manner is top notch. He is one of the kindest yet smartest doctor's I've encountered in nearly 5 decades. As a result of his ongoing and tireless devotion to his patients and his profession I am excited to say that my Aunt will soon be coming home after having beat the odds due to post surgery complications that Dr Gupta inherited (meaning he did not do the original surgery but did help nurse her back to health). I am so happy that my Aunt will soon be heading home but I will miss Dr Gupta's genuinely nice and kind demeanor, guidance, perseverance and medical skills getting our loved one healthy again. I'm not going to comment on such things as call-backs, receptionists, location, etc. I was referred to Dr. Gupta with abdominal pain. He performed an endoscopy which revealed minor ulcerations that could account for the pain. He prescribed an antacid which I began taking. At this point, many docs would determine this a minor case and send me on my way. Dr. Gupta, however, was not satisfied that this diagnosis was conclusive, so he ordered a CAT scan. This revealed a dilation of my pancreatic canal. He ordered an MRI and this detected a mass in my pancreas. A distal pancreatectomy was immediately performed at GTU hospital and a PET (pancreatic endocrine tumor) along with my spleen and 2/3 of my pancreas was removed. This was 3 years ago, and today there is no sign of remission. Bottom line - his perseverance may well have saved my life. read more

Dr. Gupta is an excellent physician. I was referred to him by a Primary Care Physician, Dr. M. Linda M Thompson, who was covering for my primary care. She called his office and made an appointment for me for 2-3 days later, and also asked the person to request Dr. Gupta to call her. He called in 10-15 minutes while I was still there (Dr. Thompson spend almost an hour going over all my history, calling and getting blood work that was ordered by my primary care physician). Dr. Gupta took the time to talk to Dr. Thompson to go over my tests and clinical observations by Dr. Thompson. While there was a wait (beyond my appointment time) before I could see him. However, Dr. Gupta took the time to have a conversation both about my problem and general conversation and made me comfortable. Operating facility was great and he was really nice talking to me before the procedure (endoscopy and colonoscopy). He had also given his cell phone number if I had any question before the procedure. He also followed up after the procedure. I was so happy with the experience with him that I suggested him to my wife as well. read more

After starting with a different dr. who only communicated online and was slow to answer questions it was fantastic to see a doctor who would sit and talk with me and answer my questions about my care. He has called me results to me early in the morning to ensure I wasn't worried and had the information right away. I feel very lucky to have found Dr. Gupta! read more

PLEASE DO NOT LET THE POST BY Guiliana F. CHANGE YOUR DECISION TO GO TO Dr. Gupta! I drive from Shenandoah Valley to Bethesda,Md to see him. Being a Nurse for 23 yrs, and working w/ many Doctors... I could only wish that the Dr.s @ Inova Alexandria,and Fairfax Hospital had 1/4 of the Compassion, Empathy, and Bedside Manner that Dr.Gupta has. I know many GI Dr.s in Northern Va. that I could go to, and have, but they could not figure what is wrong w/ me so ALL of them would just give the Diagnosis of IBS or Crohns.Dr.Gupta has done more for me in 4 visits than all the other Physicians put together. It's rare to find a Good Dr. that is also kind, and empathetic. If that is what your looking for in a GI Physician, Dr.Gupta is all they above. read more

Though Dr. Gupta was never my physician, I did have the opportunity to work with him as a nurse quite often. He was easily accessible, and was always eager to address the needs and concerns of his patients.
