i discovered Vilma because she lectured at my college and i later found out that she had her own…read morepractice in town close to where i live. of course i had to go check her out :) if you read my other reviews of medical places, i generally tend to pick places based on convenience because i'm lazy :) it's actually really dumb luck that i've found so many great practitioners in dublin. or maybe ireland is just full of amazing people, i dunno. i went to Vilma initially for cranio-sacral therapy, and then eventually for some herbal medicine. she has a well-rounded holistic approach to health and she's extremely knowledgeable. she's not afraid to explain things to you in simple terms that you can understand and really relate to your own health. according to her web site, she does cranio-sacral therapy, naturopathy, herbal medicine, and nutrition among other things. when i went to her for cranio, i really had zero idea what it was all about aside from the few things friends had told me about it. but really, all i knew was that some people had deep emotional responses and some just came out of it feeling very relaxed. and i have to admit, i went into it with a healthy dose of skepticism. i also went there after a good healthy dose of cappuccino. heh. so suffice it to say, i didn't actually expect to be able to calm down as much as i eventually ended up doing. in fact it was such a distinct change in my disposition that at the end when we were talking about it, she said she "saw" a point at which my body started accepting the treatment and released a blockage. i completely felt that! it was so bizarre and almost surreal to me to be told by someone else what i had physically felt. especially when all that had been going on for an hour was me lying on my back and her with her hands places under my bum and on my chest. she also asked me if there was something going on with my thyroid or throat or if i had something i needed to talk about. i wasn't sure then, but i later found out that in fact there was something going on there. so color me a believer! i think Vilma is one of those very intuitive people which i completely appreciate because it shows that she's willing to connect with her patients and listen to them, even if they aren't actually speaking in words. i've had a handful of treatments with her and every single time i go in there frazzled like a chewed up electrical cord, i come out feeling calm, happy and on a few occasions positively giddy. and on a more physical level, she fixed a headache i'd had for days on one visit; on another, she made my sciatica go away (at least til i messed up my back again).

I went to the Rafters for 3 years first to Dr Yvonne Rafter who showed absolutely no signs of any interest in my presence or of being a GP. Then to Dr Dermot Rafter. Though he was more compassionate or caring, I had a bad experience when I went in for travel vaccinations. You'd think when your GP advertises that they provide these vaccinations they would know what you need. Imagine my surprise when he started consulting a chart and then the Internet (right there in front of me!). On one of my followups he didn't even have the vaccination required! If this wasn't bad enough, the vaccinations ended up costing over 100 euro more than what was quoted in the beginning. This was the final straw for me and I have not been back since. When you're paying a premium, as I did in the Rafter office, you would expect the doctor to at least have done his homework before you arrive. For this reason, I must give a bad review.

As well as her real medical qualification, Ms. Lennon is also a "trained" homeopath and acupuncturist. Now, some of you may have heard a lot of pros and cons about this whole homeopathy lark: it's just water, and homeopaths themselves admit as much. Only they think that it's magical water. It's pretty weird. Herbal medicine has been around a very long time, it's advocates point out. Yes it has. The stuff that works becomes "medicine", without the herbal prefix, and the stuff that doesn't work is just bits of twigs and such. My Dad goes to see this lady every couple of months. The usual diagnosis he receives is "You're intolerant to wheat". Now, I'd like to point out that in any of the previous fifty-odd years of my father's life, no actual real doctors have ever noticed this intolerance to wheat, and that Ms. Lennon is no way qualified to make this diagnosis. Nor has she ever cured this alleged intolerance to wheat, so I don't see why he keeps going to her. But every couple of months he does, and writes a nice cheque at the end, too. He brought me there once, and she pricked with little needles that had been rubbed with wheat and milk and cat fur and such. I seem to remember the results were inconclusive, but I don't think that I'm bothered by wheat or dairy or cat fur, and if I was, you can bet your arse that I'd go to see a real doctor who'd been through medical school and not some kooky lady peddling woo to gullible members of the middle classes. Phew, that feels better.
