The teachers are all very friendly and make themselves available for their students. Once you become part of the academy it's like you become part of the Garnish family for life (if you choose to keep that connection!) The class sizes are small and the curriculum has recently been revised to optimize productivity. They also do additional courses on beat-making, film scoring and vocal recording. She has endless little tricks and techniques to help resolve problems and difficulties. I really valued that she always had feedback on my performance on musical and technical levels, yet in an encouraging fashion, which really helps in making progress, as you feel there is always a goal to reach for. Nadeen is a very charming person and I really loved working with her and unreservedly recommend her as a teacher.

I have some musical background from playing piano growing up, but am a complete beginner on the kit. For a couple months I tried to teach myself to play using YouTube videos (hopefully if you are reading this you have already disabused yourself of this idea), which helped me quickly come to understand the value of live instruction. I started browsing for a teacher reading Craigslist ads and websites, trying to get a sense for teaching styles and what lessons would be like. One resource I found particularly helpful was this video of Jake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a-dhGt0-3Q) teaching in Italy. Despite the language issues, I think this is very representative of how Jake approaches teaching - he is very good at explaining concepts in plain English and building my understanding of music theory conversationally. My lesson time with Jake is spent in a very different way than I have experienced with other music teachers. Rather than 1) watching him play in hopes that I might learn through osmosis, or 2) having lessons serve as a sort of supervised practice time, my lessons are engaging sessions where Jake explains the concepts we are trying to master and most importantly gives me ideas and tools for how to practice and incorporate these concepts into my playing. This makes my practice time so much more valuable and I believe has really accelerated my learning. I really look forward to my weekly lessons, and my lessons get me fired up to practice during the week. This virtuous cycle has definitely driven improvement in my playing, but most importantly my enjoyment of the instrument and the learning process. What more can you ask of a teacher?

All teachers are or have been in the industry for years. The way they teach is very hands on. It's probably one of the very few schools that gives you this much Hands on experience. You learn at class and get to do it in real life the same week. It's very nice that while all the information fresh you get to experience it and really learn how it works. All lectures are connected in a way that help you become a good storyteller. We are learning a lot at New York Film Academy. I'm so happy that I decide to attend here for my BFA in film diploma. Have no regrets. It's so great to be surrounded by creative and passionate people.

It's mostly private music lessons, so I'll concentrate on that. These are not cheap, but the teachers are all of an extremely high caliber. I've seen half a dozen Y teachers at work, and I can say that not only are they all top-notch professional musicians, but extraordinary teachers. I'm in awe of their ability to communicate musical ideas to children, even very young ones. Their patience and positivity (is that a word?) are mind-boggling. The administration is responsive and friendly, although I believe the director will be leaving shortly. Minus half a star for the condition of the Steinway grands in all the practice rooms. Really, these teachers deserve better.

If I could give six stars, I would! I had decided to take piano lessons a little over a year ago. My first teacher started me off learning 15-second melodies spontaneously written on napkins. After a week, he had me playing three-note chords in one hand to accompany a guitarist he was simultaneously teaching. In summary, this was a pretty horrible experience and I started Googling for a new teacher - one of the first places that popped up was Piano Lessons NYC. I spent my first month learning with an instructor no longer with the school, who seemed to be a natural educator and was extremely supportive. From day one, she had a standardized plan (with an actual curriculum) that worked wonders; I was playing with both hands together pretty quickly. Due to an inability to meet at the same location, I had to switch from her to Mayuko Yamashita, who founded and runs the school. Everything is so organized; we work off a few different books simultaneously. Lessons are once a week, and meaningful homework assignments are given (at present, this typically consists of a brief piece or two, and various hand exercises). No didactic choice Mayuko makes is without a clear purpose. She scans through books deliberately picking specific pieces/exercises like tesserae in a mosaic, and everything is selected to advance some specific technical component. Moreover, she's totally open to whatever pieces you want to learn. I tend to strive for the very challenging Romantic Period stuff (one day!) - Mayuko will honestly let you know what you can and cannot presently begin learning, and what it will take to get there. If a piece is within reach, we go for it and learn it extremely thoroughly. During lessons, no nuances escape her. She'll point out so many seemingly little things - wrist and elbow motions, which part of the fingertip is contacting the keys, downward velocity, etc. - that just add up to developing a highly efficient and graceful technical foundation. Any and all judgment is purely objective and sessions are totally free of pressure; when mess-ups happen, we laugh them off, figure out why they happened, and progress. Every few months, the school sends invitations to perform at recitals and attend concerts hosted by professional musicians, and these have been wonderful experiences (although I haven't performed!). Earlier this month, I listened to Mayuko play some beautiful contemporary classical pieces. It gives you a tremendous confidence boost and sense of pride when you see a supremely talented concert pianist in action and know it's your teacher! In conclusion, if you're serious about learning piano, then look no further. If you're on the fence, then I say go for it! To become proficient in any instrument isn't easy, but in my brief experience, two things have proven critical: (1) your will to work hard, and (2) an excellent teacher. Listen to your instructor, learn to enjoy the little triumphs along the way, and you'll cultivate a skill that will give you a lifetime of joy.
