Walking around the Gateway District in downtown Salt Lake City when we came across this comic book/hobby store. We actually found this place unexpectedly right after parking the car in the nearby parking garage and my LTP, who enjoys collecting comic books, wanted to pop in and see what they had here. If you're a comic book nerd, then this is the place for you. They have a lot of awesome stuff in here. All their comic book selections that they have available are in boxes located in the back of the store and are listed in alphabetic order for easy browsing. They also have comic books that are permanently sealed and can't be opened. When I was little, I was a huge, huge fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, and seeing some of those here brought me back to my childhood. Along with comic books, they also have puzzles, trading cards, board games, and a collection of the world's smallest things, like the world's smallest Godzilla and the world's smallest Barbie doll. They had the world's smallest Magic 8 ball as well and I tested one while it was in the package. It was so small that I couldn't read the text after I shook it. We love working on puzzles in our free time and we would've bought one if we weren't working on one back at home right now. This was a cool place to step into. Very spacious and lots to choose from, you could spend hours and hours in here. read more

I happened to stop in on my way to get "dessert" after dinner at D&B last weekend. I was amazed at how big the store was! I was excited to see all the manga and anime figures they had available as well. The guy on staff was helpful with recommendations of manga that I was looking at, and he was patient as I knocked some of them over. I look forward to going back and seeing what they have in stock. I ended up getting a Muzak QPosket. :) read more

Got a scam pack of Pokémon 151 cards. Make sure to check the back of your cards before they give them to you. They will slide them into a bag without you looking at them when you buy them. If you flip them over you will see that there is a shrinkage and that the packages have been pre-opened. read more

We first came for their halloween trick or treating event to get a free comic book and it was pretty cool. Not too busy, and in a strip mall situation on a fairly busy road. I've been a loyal patron of the good Dr. for many years. I have recently started to get back into comic books, perhaps this is symptomatic of my 6 year old's infectious enthusiasm for all things superhero. Either way I cannot think of any other place I could go to satiate my comic book and collectible fix. Dr. Volts is kind of hidden inside a small and somewhat seedy shopping mall on 33rd south. However, if you are looking for it, it is easy to spot - the life-sized superman in the doorway along with the myriad of comic book posters on the windows are a surefire giveaway. The inside is small and clean, a lot of shelves chuck full of comic books, graphic novels, trade paperbacks, toys, and collectibles. However, despite being small it does not feel claustrophobic. It is quite easy to find what it is you're looking for, the comic books themselves are organized by publisher and then alphabetized by title. However, should you have any questions the staff is always ready and willing to help. If you know little about comics but have had a hankering to get into the "funny books" they will also offer recommendations in a non-elitist, non-judgmental manner. Another great feature is the "hold" option. You specify which books you would like held month to month and as shipments come in the staff will pull your books and hold them for you. You do not have to be there in person to add books to your hold either. I have called in many times to add a certain book to my hold list. All you have to do is verify your name and give your hold # and voila, book added. Dr. Volt's also sells some apparel. And there is also a room in the back where the geeks can come in to play board/card games in the evenings and on the weekend. All in all this is an awesome store and a favorite place of mine to visit when I am feeling nostalgic about my by-gone days as a comic book collector. I prefer Doctor Volts over Night Flight as it's less crowded and the staff seems more willing to help and answer questions and not view you as a "noob." Come and check it out! read more

Dr Volt's is a comic book store, and that's its main focus. But whenever there is a new product that comes out for trading card games, I can always count of them to have the most competitive prices, even in comparison to big box stores. I recently bought a draft box from them on pre order and I was absolutely blown away at the price they have kept it at. I know a lot of other stores have cancelled peoples' pre orders for this newest set coming out and just cranking up the prices, but Dr Volt's has kept its promise at the price I bought it for. On top of all of that, there are premium products that are now months old and out of print selling for tens of dollars higher at other stores, and Dr Volts continues to keep the prices low. I know they're not a local game store, but their prices keep me coming back and I will continue treat them like my local game store for sealed products. read more

This is hands down one of the best comic shops in the valley! Everyone who works there is super nice and they never talk down to you or gatekeep. Every time I've asked them about a book or series they've always been really cool and never condescending like some other stores. Ask some of the folks who work there for a recommendation. They'll point you towards something new or weird or crazy that you never thought you'd like. It's a little pricey, but hey, it's comics. Shit ain't cheap sometimes. I figured I should update this to mention some changes. Most of what I said in the prior review stands, but this is by far my favorite comic shop, to the point where it is perhaps becoming more of a regular haunt. I need more of those and this has been a welcome aid in my triumphant(?) return back into comic books with a fervor that is, if not equaling my younger self, at least is well on the way. As regular readers know, I am a convenience whore and so when I say that, while I'm fairly close now, this is the kind of place I would drive across the valley (or further) to regularly visit. I couldn't ask for more. I've been in about 5 times now.. I nearly filled my first short box. I've become quite addicted. Every single time I've come in, the staff has been friendly and helpful. I set up a hold box so that every time I come in, this week's new releases are set aside and waiting for me. There was no deposit or commitment required to set this up. They even offered to put the comic back out on the shelf if I no longer want to buy it. Good business practice I say. They've ordered back issues for me so that I can get caught up on storylines, but they also have a huge selection of trade paperbacks if you decide to go that route. I've been a customer at Dr. Volt's for roughly ten (10) years; the store has been my go-to connection for everything from comics to figures to game supplies. Let's start with the tangibles: The store is clean and well-kept. The shelves are stocked with current and back issues, trade paperbacks and graphic novels. You can also find statues, figures, knick-knacks, and other collectibles. They also stock games (Magic, HeroClix, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Attack Wing, to name a few) and game supplies. Can't find what you're looking for? Ask one of the staff and, if it's available, they can order it for you. As far as intangibles go, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. (Almost dangerously so.) Want to know when a character first appeared? Ask. What titles does an item appear in? Ask. In all, I've found Dr. Volt's to be a one-stop shopping source for my comics, gaming and collectible needs. I am an avid comic book collector and I have found that each comic book shop has its own personality. Dr. Volt's is a great place to pick up your current comic books, however I have found the majority of their foot traffic to be the regular magic the gathering and Hero Clix as well as other table top or card game players. While Dr. Volts does have a large number of current books available to pick up, sadly they do not bag and board their books, and use wire racks which really can destroy books. As customers looks for through the books for a recent issue it sadly bends the spine of the other books in the rack and ultimately destroys their collectability. That being said, they offer a large selection of current books, and if you set up a hold box you can be assured that your books will be in stellar shape. Dr. Volt's does not have a large selection of back issues, but they do have a few hundred to look through. They have a large selection of graphic novels, as well as collectible figures and statues. Dr. Volt's also has a nice selection of golden, silver and bronze age books up on the wall when you are looking to spend just a bit more for something special. In addition to comics and graphic novels, they also have a large selection of collectible non-sports cards, some original art, some snack food and a small refrigerator selling some cold drinks. Dr. Volt's also host's tournaments for their game playing regulars which sets them apart from some of the other local shops. Lastly they have some collecting supplies as well, such as bags, boards, hard cases, boxes, card boxes, deck boxes and other collectible supplies. The location feels like a traditional comic store, halogen lit with very little natural light and it could use a little style, however, the killer selection of books, games and collectables with such an incredibly friendly, knowledgeable staff make up for the lack of visual esthetic. It feels like a community hang out for comic book geeks and RPG nerds alike with out any pretentiousness. This review is predominantly for the high end, long time collector, as I didn't actually look at much else. They have about 6 long boxes of silver and Bronze Age. Prices were about 15% above market value vs. grade from what I could tell. They also have roughly 20 boxes of Copper-Modern books to flip through. You'll have your best luck flipping through these, at least I did. The wall comics were ok, but 30 or so "filler/non-key" comics doesn't make a wall. A few earlier Avengers, Fantastic Four, Flash, the usual suspects. Nothing stellar. Shop seems fine, but the fellow at the register didn't seem to enjoy some of the obviously terrible questions people were calling him with. Welcome to the comic biz! He was nice enough to us though! Incredibly friendly group of people. My interest in Comic books comes and goes so They pull all of the one title that I like to buy regularly for free. I can call them or email them to pull things for me and they'll even order items if they don't have it in stock. Whenever I talk to them they are very friendly. I even sent them a list of items that my brother wanted for his birthday and they helped me out with a smile. They are also very helpful in making recommendations. Dr Volts is far and away the best comic store experience available. I can't speak to volume or special orders but I do know the people are great. I only go there a few times a year but I always feel welcome. My son has a sizable hold box and wouldn't go anywhere else again. It's Free Comic Book day that made me write. Limit 5 and that's generous given the lines. I have been in after FCB the last few years and when I told them I was a teacher they have loaded me up with leftover books. Over the years hundreds of students have benefited. Many of them have no resources or ability to get even free comics so this is big for them. Thanks for letting me bring Free Comic Day to them. I've come in a few times over the past few years, and every time the staff have been extremely friendly and helpful, and the selection is better than any in Utah. I'm always very impressed by the fantastic series they keep in stock like a lot of the pre-new52 DC stuff, as well as things like Matt Fraction's Iron Man or most of the collected editions of Powers. I could be lost for days in the selection of awesome reading available there. Highly recommend. read more

To be brutally honest, quite possibly the worst shop in town. I used to frequent them when I was younger and I thought, "Hey this place is pretty awesome!" But a few years have passed and I have been to other similar shops like Oasis Games and Family Game Night as well as Black Cat Comics. I HIGHLY recommend those business over this rundown, dirty, cluttered mess of a shop. While the other businesses I mentioned always have a clean and family friendly environment, whenever I have recently gone into Volt's, while the staff is VERY friendly and knowledgeable, the store itself just feels old, run down, and forgotten. Then the regulars they have, while this is out of the staff's control, are rude, loud, curse constantly, and quite honestly reek of weed and beer (which I find odd because most of them are minors....). This is NOT an indictment of the staff because they ALWAYS do their best to make sure I find what I come in for and they tell when they are expecting their next shipment of whatever I am searching for if it is not currently in stock. While I do not read or collect comic books, I do love playing Magic: The Gathering and the Pokemon Trading Card Game and this is a decent place to find packs and boxes, but their single card selection leaves a lot to be desired. In summary I would recommend other shops that are just a little bit more of a drive but well worth the trip. Avoid this place like the plague on Friday Night Magic and Sundays if you want to keep your sense of smell and not feel filthy leaving this shop. read more

As far as I can tell from older photos, this place has grown and improved a lot.
