Had a great time looking for comics again. This was the first store we stopped at and by far a favorite. The guy that rang us up was super friendly and helpful. The store is packed with comics, memorabilia, posters, books, and toys.

Dr Volts has always been my favorite SLC comic store. I've been out of state for seven years and stopped in today. Total remodel inside. Clean, organized, and awesome people. Go check it out.

A welcome bastion from the wind and snow

I've been a loyal patron of the good Dr. for many years. I have recently started to get back into comic books, perhaps this is symptomatic of my 6 year old's infectious enthusiasm for all things superhero. Either way I cannot think of any other place I could go to satiate my comic book and collectible fix. Dr. Volts is kind of hidden inside a small and somewhat seedy shopping mall on 33rd south. However, if you are looking for it, it is easy to spot - the life-sized superman in the doorway along with the myriad of comic book posters on the windows are a surefire giveaway. The inside is small and clean, a lot of shelves chuck full of comic books, graphic novels, trade paperbacks, toys, and collectibles. However, despite being small it does not feel claustrophobic. It is quite easy to find what it is you're looking for, the comic books themselves are organized by publisher and then alphabetized by title. However, should you have any questions the staff is always ready and willing to help. If you know little about comics but have had a hankering to get into the "funny books" they will also offer recommendations in a non-elitist, non-judgmental manner. Another great feature is the "hold" option. You specify which books you would like held month to month and as shipments come in the staff will pull your books and hold them for you. You do not have to be there in person to add books to your hold either. I have called in many times to add a certain book to my hold list. All you have to do is verify your name and give your hold # and voila, book added. Dr. Volt's also sells some apparel. And there is also a room in the back where the geeks can come in to play board/card games in the evenings and on the weekend. All in all this is an awesome store and a favorite place of mine to visit when I am feeling nostalgic about my by-gone days as a comic book collector. I prefer Doctor Volts over Night Flight as it's less crowded and the staff seems more willing to help and answer questions and not view you as a "noob." Come and check it out!

The entire time I was there, the store owners were yelling at each other and the woman would not stop cursing the man the entire time she walked around the store fixing stuff. After a while, I ended up finding a book that I wanted to give my niece when the woman came by, fixed some random book on the shelf behind me and said, "Don't touch the books if you aren't going to put them back correctly." Excuse me? I didn't even touch that book. I immediately put the book I was going to buy back and walked out the store. Incredibly rude to each other and their customers. Many shelves are bending and I wouldn't be surprised if they broke and books came crashing down on someone's head. Stay away from here!

The moment you enter, you're engulfed by the smell of old books - what would you expect! The store had a tremendous collection but it was hard to navigate or just browse. The store owner was very knowledgeable and is able to tell you where things are located, if you know what you're looking for (such as specific author and title). I didn't spend too much time in the store. I was just accompanying a friend who wanted to browse Downtown Salt Lake City. It's definitely a place to find unique trinkets/gift.

The ungraded higher end books, however, were sort of scattered about the store, on various walls, or even stacked (unstoppable) in a glass case. The back room ha 25 or so long boxes to look through. A note on the prices of the raw books: WAY over market. I mean, astronomically so. Prime example, Daredevil #181 in NM is a $5-15 book all day. This store had it at $55. That's just one example. I've never Said to a store owner/employee "how on earth are you pricing these?!" But I did today. The owners wife? Was super sweet though, and took my complaining in stride. I bought all of two comics unfortunately, but I was looking to spend far far more. I would come back, if only to score a nice CGC book or three.

There is also a solid selection of action figures, including some older ones, so worth a look in that respect. Prices are also excellent, which gives it the push I was thinking from 3.5 stars, but this would be something I'd look into only occasionally, as it's debatable how worth the fight to get in during the limited hours is. For me, this will be something I'll check in maybe 2 or 3 times a year...

In a nut shell, Game Haven is a phenomenal, local business and community…read more This store has just about everything a nerd could want. If you want to find people to play Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh with, every Saturday they have tournaments. You like magic cards, there is almost always someone in the store playing magic but every Friday they always have some magic event happening. You like painting figurines and playing war hammer, they have a section set up for you and every Monday is night where people come to paint there figurines. Outside of this they have a great cafe. They have your standard coffees but my favorite thing is they have a ever changing specialty drinks special that changes season to season or if their is a big nerdy event happening. On of my favorite drinks I had was when they made drinks inspired by and to celebrated "Detective Pikachu". The biggest item for me this store offers is their board games. They have a ton of demos you can play in the store and cafe or rent to take home. Every Tuesday night and Sunday their is a community that comes together to play some board games. If their is a game you want to play and not sure you want to buy it yet, come to these events. If you go often enough and I am sure someone will bring your game in and you will get to play it. For me, these events are like a midweek Christmas, always looking forward to them. As for their events, what I have said does not even scratch the surface. Game Have always seems to have something coming down the pipeline. They have Mini-Cons, Halloween events, psychic and fortune-telling events and so so much more. They support local vendors and artists and just as a ridiculously amazing community. Not to get to personal but Game Haven's community is very inviting and accepting. From their customers, to their employees, to the owner himself. I was very anti-social and depressed a few years ago but Game Havens community accepted me, and I have met some outstanding people and made some life long friendships. A lot of these events have been suspended due to the pandemic but once everything is over, I encourage you to come to this location if this is a community you want to be a part of. Come to one of the events, have a cup of coffee or tea, sit down and as long as you come with a positive outlook and are understanding and respectful, you will have a fun and outstanding time that you will not soon forget!
