This is the most organized comic store I've ever been to in my life. More importantly, the pricing on back issues as well as new issue incentive variants is the lowest I've seen, especially visiting from Chicago. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a good accounting of their inventory and are able to fish out something if you ask quite efficiently. When you walk in you will notice the huge selection of comics esp in the middle area with daily discounted price. The staff here is super friendly and would totally nerd out with you about anything. It seem like they've read every single comic book in the store. Their action figures collection isn't bad as well. Totally love it. One think about this is to be prepare to search till your heart content in regards to getting a specific comic book. It is nicely arranged alphabetically, but there is so many under that certain character that you might need to search a while. An example would be if you want a specific spider man comic book...there are so many universe that you might need to search the whole Spider-Man section to even find it. Not hyperbole: Black Cat Comics is the best comic shop I've stepped foot in. First and foremost the staff is welcoming. I was helped by Taylor. She knows the shop like the back of her hand. She knew exactly where every back issue I requested was. Even though she was super busy, she was accommodating and prompt in searching for the books I inquired about. Had a nice convo with the owner. We talked about music, comcis, life with kids. Very easy to talk to. Secondly HOLY SHIT the back issue selection is remarkable. This is a collectors dream shop. I have a list of back issues I search for to complete various series that I've collected over the years. Some, I can't even find on the big retail comic sites but low and behold I found them here. Not only is the back issue selection diverse; but the comics are in great shape. It's obvious that Black Cat has high standards when it comes to buying comics and they are selling at a bargain. Which I appreciate. Lastly the music selection here is kick ass! to hear some Fugazi and shit like that is just a cherry on top of an already great experience. This place is a gem. Decent little store. I went in and immediately asked where the high end books were. He seemed a bit caught off guard, but pointed me to the glass case on the front wall. Inside, a 1st Hobgoblin, 1st Crimson Dynamo & Mandarin (wrecked), an early Walking Dead (#11?), Sandman #1, Machine Man #1, and a couple others. Not exactly what I had in mind when I said high end, but apparently thats all they had. I went to work looking through the 30+ long boxes on the floor, and found some decent books for below current market value. All and all, a good trip really. If you're looking for comics in Salt Lake, this is probably your best bet. Realistically, SLC needs to step up its Comic game! I would have loved to go through the back room, which looked like 80 boxes packed full. Ah well! read more

I'd say one of the best shops around. Good size and great selection too. Say this place passing by and turned around to check it out. I was impressed with the selection inside, how open and organized it was. The owner was very nice, talkative and generally helpful. I liked that everything wasn't crammed in the space, which wasn't too big or too small. The place had lots of comics in the boxes alphabetized. He had a lot of different ones to choose from. Some priced high like for an original no 1 Swamp Thing or low for a new no. 1 Robocop. I thought it was great that he had a nice selection of classic comics and comics from shows like Adventure Time, Simpsons, and Garfield. I enjoyed seeing all the comics on the shelves from their covers, instead of being partially behind other comics like another shop does, where you can't see the full cover. He also allows you to see the comic, instead of a "staff only" handling which another shop does. He also had a selection of collectible toys. Great place, great selection and friendly service. People always reference "Black Cat" first when talking about SLC comic book stores, so it's easy to go in there with high expectations. It's a decent store with a nice location, but the few times I've been there the selection wasn't very impressive, which I expected for more obscure comic book series, but there wasn't even much of a Batman selection! Maybe I was just not shopping on the right days? (I don't really know much about comic book distribution.) As for the staff, I've had good encounters probably once or twice. They're friendly when they greet you and it's nice that they don't really bother you, but when I need to ask for some help they've been pretty condescending, which is a definite turn-off (being a female reader, I've had not-so-great experiences at comic book stores in the past, so I'm always a little wary going into these places already). For example, one time in Black Cat I asked if/when they might receive the 2nd volume of New-52 Birds of Prey and the employee just snapped back "They cancelled that series" and turned back around to continue sorting comics. His response indicated that either A. he didn't understand my question (the 2nd volume was already released and I'd seen it in other stores), or B. he didn't "approve" of my reading that series. Either way, he wasn't helpful, and his tone and demeanor were definitely off-putting. Another, friendlier employee had to interject and answer my question. Another example: Once while checking out a book the employee expressed his strong dislike of it. It rubbed me the wrong way, because obviously I was interested in it and wanted to buy it. It was unsolicited advice. I didn't ask for his opinion on the book, and I just don't think that a book store vendor should try to discourage anyone from reading anything. I chose to buy that book on my own, and I chose to buy it in that store rather than online or at Barnes&Noble. I just don't get why he had to voice a negative opinion when everyone has different tastes. But my experiences were probably unique, seeing how this store is so popular and gets so many good reviews. read more

I've been into more than 50 different comic book stores nationwide as a comic book collector, and I can definitely say that Black Cat Comics is one of the best! There are some very simple but extremely important best practices that all comic book stores should follow, such as bagging and boarding all comic books, not storing books in wire racks that encourage customers to bend comics thus ruining their collectability, having a clear organization method for new books that come out every week as well as any older issues you might have in the long boxes. On that subject, I also believe that any great comic book store should have a significant offering of back issues, and Black Cat certainly excels in this department! I know that we are moving into the digital age, but for collector's, digital comic's will never do. In addition to following these best practices Black Cat's owner has a huge reach into the comic book community nation wide and has an absolute passion for both comic books and collectors. He does not like to take advantage of his customer base by marking books up beyond their grade or Overstreet Guide price. Some other local comic shops charge Ebay prices, thus hurting the very customers that they depend on. Black Cat also has a huge selection of graphic novels, some action figures, posters and T-shirts, however their primary business is comic books. In addition to retail sales, Black Cat also offers a hold box option for their regulars which requires a $10 deposit which you get back after six months, and as a hold box customer you also receive 10% off of your purchases. They also have quarterly promotional events offering great deals on back issues and trade paperbacks. If that wasn't enough, they also invite comic book writers, and artists to visit his store for signing's and promotional events from time to time! While the store is pretty busy typically, if you catch them in a quiet moment they are always up for some great comic book discussions and recommendations as well! I have always had a very positive experience at Black Cat's. As soon as I walked into the place, I was in heaven due to how many comics they had available, and you can tell that the people there love their job. Although a smaller shop, they have a vast collection and are very adamant about trying to help you find what you are looking for. The employees always try to engage you in conversation, and have proved to have an extensive knowledge on all types of comics, including Manga, which I was extremely impressed with. This is probably better than the 3 I gave it before...it is definitely much more comic-oriented. This is good for things like back issues, of which they have a fairly hefty collection and which takes up the majority of the space. Staff is generally pretty fun and friendly (and perhaps more than a touch snarky) and visits are enjoyable. Parking is still poop and this can frequently be a touch difficult to move around in, but the first is not the fault of this place and the second kind of comes with the territory for the majority of shops in this category.
