I have been studying martial arts intermittently for about 20 years, with a focus on northern style kung fu. I started training tai chi a few months ago at Dragon Phoenix. The instructor here is the total package. He combines the meditative aspects of traditional Chinese martial arts with the martial, and is excellent at giving students what they need from the tai chi form. He integrates chi kung (energy work) into every class, and shows you how the tai chi is simply an extension of the moves and principles present within the chi kung exercises (or perhaps the other way around). If you are looking for legit tai chi in the Asheville area, this is it! read more

History

Established in 2014.

Prior to opening this school, Mr. Dison worked as an elementary school teacher for six and a half years. His goal as a teacher continues to be, "Helping students to make wise decisions and to grow into kind people who have a passion for learning and growing." Mr. Dison began his study of martial arts in 1998 and through his travels has been able to study many places beginning with external styles and then moving into internal styles. Dragon Phoenix was established as a way to share the wisdom and skills gained through many years of hard work and dedication with others, so that they may benefit from all that Kung Fu has to offer.

Meet the Business Owner: Aaron D.

Mr. Dison began his studies in martial arts in 1998. He started in Taekwondo under Kevin Heckert (5th deg.), earned his blackbelt, and became an instructor. After moving to college he got the opportunity to work with other blackbelts from different systems and explored some new styles, such as Hapkido, Shotokan, and Jeet Quan Do. Later he moved to Memphis where he studied under Chris Wiley (5th deg.) learning PasaRyu, as well as Yin Baguazhang. In 2006 he moved to Asheville and began studying Chen Tai Chi under Sifu Frank Paolillo. In the time that followed, he learned the styles of Dragon Baguazhang, Pao Choi, Praying Mantis, and Tao. Mr. Dison continues to train and explore new material. As a martial artist one can always grow. There are no limits, and mastery has infinite depths.

We ate lunch at the nearby Twisted Laurel, which was excellent. Things to know: Parking is not free. There are a couple of metered spaces nearby and there's a pay to park lot across the street. There are no bathrooms or changing rooms close by (that I could see). On their website it says there is a public bathroom, but I couldn't find it. There isn't a lot of shade except under the trees and on the amphitheater stage. These are really too far away to keep a good eye on a small child. Bring your sunscreen! There are no benches nearby to sit on, but there are concrete blocks so bring a towel for parents to sit on. It's a public fountain, so we were glad to have our water shoes. The fountain is advertised to have a lot of features and lights, but we didn't see any of that while we were there. The water shoots up out of the ground and doesn't change. That's enough for my preK kid, but might get boring for older ones. We brought some water toys and those were a big hit. While we were there a summer camp or daycare came through with 50 kids who were well-behaved, but they took over the amphitheater area and most of the fountain. We ended up leaving because it was just too crowded.

My son is hooked on Kung-fu and we love Mr. Dison! I've been so impressed with his knowledge of internal martial arts & it shows in his teaching style. Since my son started taking Kung-fu with him, he has exhibited a strong mind-body connection and cooperation with other kids and grown up's alike. I love that it takes mainstream ideas that my kids are obsessed with (such as Ninja Turtles and Kung-fu Panda) and puts them into a more thoughtful and traditional context. Aaron's presence is grounding, strong, and peaceful. He is an awesome role model for kids! Now I just have to find time to try out Tai Chi or Qi Gong for myself. read more
