Take this review how you want, just know that I have no reason to lie about this place. Johnny Buck (main instructor/owner the way he explained it) makes fun of the mentally ill with a lot of maliciousness. 7 months into my BJJ journey and taking my training very seriously; I saw a student go up to Johnny and say (referring to one of the mentally Ill students who would train with us) "I was worried about hurting him" in which Johnny responded with "Oh no, they're really strong, they can handle a lot, and uh don't worry if you hurt em because they're not even human so..." Racism is prevalent here, don't be fooled by their kindness at first. Johnny used to call me mutt before I confronted him on that. There's plenty of cops that go to this gym so if the "leader" is encouraging making fun of mentally ill people and racism then you have a cycle that will continue throughout the community. This "gym" pushes a 12 month commitment for new members. They speak under their breath about you here if you don't submit to their culture or their way of thinking. It's almost like a cult in a way. The main reason why I wrote this review is because I felt it was my civic duty to let anybody who's innocently trying to learn self defense to protect others, are not taken advantage of like I was. My advice to new and potential future customers is to please stay away from that place but if you do want to check it out then I suggest you listen to your gut, stay true to who you are, and if you believe in God stay close to him because this guy and his ilk aren't good people. -Message to Johnny: What you teach is a perversion of what real humans naturally feel. Went for the free class they offered. Super comfortable and clean environment. Absolutely loved it. I was wore out after class but I loved it. Instructor was knowledgeable and it was easy to learn from him. The people in the class were very welcoming and helpful. The moment I put my information on the website requesting for information they reached out maybe 30 mins to an hour later. They were very supportive in my goals and very helpful. It was a very smooth and personal process when contacted by them. The day of my class I was sent a video from one of the ladies explaining where they are located and even where to park. This made the process easy and it also helped take away any nerves or jitters that I had following up to the class. The gentlemen that I first spoke to gave me a free t-shirt and a tour of the facility. People when I say the gym is clean I mean it is clean you can tell that the owner takes pride in the cleanliness of the gym and that the employees take it very series. This is for sure one of Asheville's top facilities that house Jiu-jitsu and it shows the moment you step into the door. Better yet it shows the moment you reach out for information. With all that said ultimately I did not sign up. The reason for this is that I could not justify or afford their prices. This is also why I gave 4 stars. The gym was everything I was looking for and more but the prices were not. However I will say that it is kind of one of those "you get what you pay for" situations. I can absolutely see the price point because like I said it is for sure one of Asheville's top tier facilities. It was just not what I was ready to sign up for financially. I will add also that it has been a little less than a week after turning them down and I have not been hounded with phone calls or text. That is a good thing to me because normally gyms will not leave you alone after turning them down. I am looking to join something like this for a weight loss journey with no interest in earning any type of belt. You can tell that this gym would absolutely put you on the path to become excellent at the sport. I in no way regret going and checking it out. I do not feel as if I wasted my time. I joined Rogue to learn how to defend myself against SA. Every time I had experienced SA, I would freeze up. I wanted to change that response. I liked the club until 3 months in, when I was sexually assaulted during one of the classes. My grappling partner grabbed both of my breasts and squeezed. I froze. I left that class in shock, not fully being able to process what had happened. I kept trying to make sense of it. Maybe it was an accident? But he had grabbed and held on for seconds. This was an experienced member. Who had grappled many times. I went to the instructors a couple sessions later and explained what had happened. They told me that I was misinterpreting what had occurred and that this was an accident. I said no, it appeared to be rather intentional. They then asked me if I had a history of sexual assault. I did not understand the purpose behind that question. It made me feel like him grabbing me was somehow my fault. They promised me that they would talk to this individual. But every time I would ask for an update, they would tell me they hadn't gotten to it, or give me other excuses. They treated me like I was being problematic. A couple months after this incident, I was grappling again with another individual. He grabbed my butt and squeezed. During an exercise that did not require hands to be anywhere near that area.. Based on how this had gone last time, I didn't bother bringing this up to the leadership. I did not attend any further classes. I am now hesitant to attend martial arts classes. This club was suppose to be a safe place to learn how to defend myself, not to get sexually assaulted. Not to mention they keep deleting my google maps review. read more

But after training for just a short time, my coaches and training partners helped me to find new goals that they continue to help me work toward. This gym is great for beginners and experienced combat athletes alike. Johnny is a very experienced wrestler and mma fighter, but he is friendly and an easy guy to get along with. If you come from different styles (such as gracie jiu jitsu,) you'll find Johnny's catch wrestling game to be a great addition to your jiu jitsu. The jiu jitsu curriculum is based around 10th Planet material so the wrestling and jj blend together into a really practical and effective style. Also very solid muay thai instruction. The other students are welcoming and happy to help you grow. Very cool place. read more
