Went in to get a partial sleeve finished up as my previous artist has his books closed. I went in for a consult with John C and he was extremely accommodating to what I wanted and was looking to get. He also was very knowledgeable about my piece as well. He also was very open to any changes and tweaks that I wanted incorporated. The session took about 6.5 hours and John made sure we took a decent amount of breaks. He was very meticulous and overall, I was extremely satisfied with the completed art piece. The tattoo shop was also very clean and everyone was professional and very friendly. 10/10 and I will definitely be going back for more work! read more

Today was one of those aimless adventure days where we didn't really know what was on the agenda. It started off with running to the gas station to get firewood and then we headed to Downtown Hopkins to get ice cream at Cold Stone. On the way we passed by Dragonland Tattoo and decided to walk in and see what it's like. As soon as we walked in you could tell it was a reputable shop. The wall was covered in Best Of and NTA awards. I've been wanting to get a star tattoo for a few years now and was surprised to find that they could get me in pretty much right away, so I figured what the heck let's do it! I got a quarter size outline of a star on my right wrist and it took all of 30 minutes from when we walked in just to check it out to walking out with my tat exactly how I had imagined :) My niece's boyfriend got a rose tattoo on his forearm and was able to get in right after me. Our artist Dustin was awesome and eased my tattoo anxiety, making my experience go much more smoothly than my overthinking brain expected. I would encourage an appointment and consultation for most tattoos as we got small, simple ones that didn't really require one. I will definitely be back if I work up the courage to start the sleeve tattoo I've been thinking about getting. I would highly recommend Dragonland Tattoo, 5 stars from us!!! read more

This review is for my tattoo experience at Dragonland with artist, Kelli Fury. I did my research for this tattoo - found a place with a great reputation and great artists. Reviewed artist work, chose Kelli, and met with her a few months before my actual tattoo application appointment. I brought sample pictures, inspiration pictures, and a few bullet points about what I wanted. Kelli assured me she would come up with a design and we would tweak it on application day. Months later at my appt, Kelli gruffly presented me with a single design that was VERY basic. As she talked, she eventually said she had drawn it late the night before. The design reflected this. I asked how it would be shaded (the design was just a simple outline). She wasn't able to really say. I asked about resizing, but Kelli said it couldn't be resized (didn't offer to adjust the design itself). She was VERY off-putting/gruff during this whole exchange - presumably to make me compliant. Sadly, it worked. I figured, "she knows best." As she started to apply the tattoo and add shading, I reminded her that we had talked about more of a "light touch" on shading. She said "this IS light" and continued with how she was doing it. It's been a full year. I don't love this tattoo. And what's more, I'm annoyed that I think of her when I look at it. I'm disappointed in Dragonland for employing someone with such bad bedside manner. She could use some mentorship, but I'm not sure you can "train" out such an oil-and-water personality. As a former photographer, I know how hard it is to merge your own art and talent with others' desires. But that's the name of the game if you want a successful business. read more

John is awesome. I have been going to this shop since the early 2000's. It's clean, professional, and the artists are talented.

Don't use John Chamberlain! He doesn't charge for just Tattoo time. He will charge you from the second. You walk in even though he won't start tattooing for 30 to 40 minutes later then at the end when you try to pay when you're finished tattooing he won't let you pay then either he'll make you go around and show everyone your tattoo and then he'll start talking and singing and dancing. Having a good time, but when you get your bill, he will charge you from the second. You walked in till right before you walk out so it's a fraud. You also notice that his table won't be set up. Nothing will be ready. he's just trying to pad the time in his bill, oh and don't miss an appointment because I missed one due to a family emergency and he told me that it's Dragon Land Tattoo policy that they cancel your next appointment if you miss one even though he'll keep your security deposit oh and also make sure he tells you how much she's gonna charge you per hour because he told me $200 an hour then he told me 175 an hour and then he charged me 150 an hour and then started charging me 175 an hour and he never even had a discussion with me about it. I tried to have a discussion with Sean the owner. I left a message, but he never returned my call. I've been to a tattoo place that didn't charge Simply for Tattoo time only when I went back and looked at all my bills he charged me for the second I walked in the second. I walked out every single time so edit $150 an hour I must've paid , an extra thousand dollars It's not the way I would do business or the way I would allow my employees to do their business. I guess John is desperate and really needs money. It's sad that he really ruined that whole experience for me because he's greedy. read more

I couldn't have had a better experience. I got my first tattoo on my 25th birthday at some random shop in Miami. The next day, like a natural addict, I went back to that same shop for another tattoo on my back, upper right shoulder. I didn't think too long about what I wanted the second time around. It was a fairly small tattoo, but I quickly realized I made a mistake on the second one. Kinda like when you go for a second or third serving at a buffet. You know you shouldn't, but you already go for it, and then you're like "oh so that happened...oh well." 5 years later, I decided it was time for a coverup. I did my research of all the big shops in MN, and made visits to check out artist portfolios. When I got to Shahn's shop I knew this was it. I scheduled a consultation. I wanted a 7-headed cobra coming out of a lotus flower. I knew it was going to be big, and it was going to be difficult because my current tattoo was basically a black blob with scar tissue. It was raised and quite ugly looking. Shahn took notes of what I wanted, showed me references in books he had, and took some photos. I put a deposit down knowing it would be about year before I would get my appointment. It was like waiting to be tortured. One year later, I go in to see the drawing before my first appointment. I absolutely loved it. Shahn did an amazing job of designing the Cobras, each head has different expressions, and the details were very sharp. One week later. 4 hours later. My first session was completed. I wanted to cry, and pass out. I've discovered I'm a big wuss. That shit hurt. Once I hit the 3rd hour, it was like my skin was being peeled off. Shahn was super nice about helping me get relaxed. I was tense and holding my breath when we started. He talked me through the first 5 minutes and took it easy until my body adjusted to the needle. He checked on me throughout and really made it a great experience. One month later I came back to finish. Once the buzzing started I was freaking out internally again, but the last session was definitely easier. Still hurt like hell, but at least it wasn't 4 hours this time. My finished product turned out even better than I imagined. Shahn gave me lots of suggestions on design and executed perfectly. I can't even find where my old tattoo was anymore, the scar tissue even went down. The studio is bright and clean. They were remodeling the upstairs when I was in, and it looked awesome. All of the artists there are super friendly. I highly recommend getting your first, next, or coverup tattoo done here. They are top notch!! read more

Electric Dragonland just got remodeled and it looks fabulous! You won't find any flash tattoos displayed in this studio because everything they do is custom. EDL is a very clean shop. I've been tattooed many times. Nine to be exact. I've gotten OK, good, and great tattoos. But nothing compares to my ninth tattoo, when I found Thaddeus. He is so knowledgeable and has ideas on top of ideas. He will help you make decisions on exactly what to do and explain why and will guide you in the right direction. Thad did sweet pea flowers and lily of the valley as a piece on my upper arm. The colors are incredible, bright, and pastel. He explained he would leave the edges open in case I wanted to add to it in the future. Sure enough, six months later, I have just made my appointment to add to it. I will be sure to upload a picture of it soon to this page. Another great quality that Thad has is he is what I would call light handed. Yes, tattoos hurt, and don't ever believe someone who says they don't. But when someone has a light hand, it hurts just a little less. I have a tattoo on my thigh and the artist was very heavy handed and it hurt terribly. It also took a lot longer to heal and had very deep thick scabs, where my Tattoo with Thad healed a lot quicker than I expected. And finally, keep in mind the common rule, 'cheap tattoos aren't good and good tattoos aren't cheap'. All of the artists at EDL and extremely talented, and you will pay for their abilities. My tattoo cost just under $600, is about the size of my hand, took just under 4 hours, and is fabulous. Even my grandma likes it. Also, because these artists are so amazing, most of them have a long wait. Some you can get in with a little sooner, but some have a 6 month to 1 year wait because they are booked out that far. Book your consultation, and once you book your tattoo appointment, start saving your money. The good thing about the long wait is you have some time to save up! read more

No surprise all of the reviews are five stars here. This place is fabulous. I would get all of my tattoos here if it wasn't so hard to get an appointment! The best of the best. If I ever am inclined to have a larger, more detailed piece, I will be sure to spend the extra money and wait a little longer so the owner Shaun can do my piece. I don't recommend going here just for a small, non detailed piece, simply because it will cost you extra, and you can get the same result elsewhere. Like, say, if you want 'your name' tattooed on your butt, go someplace else. Everyone here is friendly and helpful. They will help you take your design and make it into something fabulous and beyond your imagination. Such talent. I have a number of tattoos and I have been in lots of shops in the Cities. Too many artists give the impression that they are doing you some sort of favor by even discussing your tattoo ideas with them for a few minutes. EDL is on the other end of the spectrum in this regard. It is easily the coolest shop I have every been in. VERY friendly folks, warm and creative environment, and a relaxing place to get tattooed! Shahn just wrapped up the the 3rd of 3 five hour sessions on a half sleeve. He is such a cool dude, and SO easy to work with. He truly wants to provide a bad ass tattoo that his clients want...not what HE wants. On top of that, he is an amazing tattoo artists that understands how to compose and create a piece that you will be proud to show off! I was happy to wait to be able to have an bad ass tattoo. What a horrible experience with Kelli. My sister and I were supposed to get correlating tattoos today that we scheduled 3 months ago. Our time slot was 12:30-6. $175/hr or $450 for a half day. We kept being told that we wouldn't be able to see a sketch til the day of the appointment, but that there would be a lot of "buffer" time in between appointments in order to make any adjustments if something wasn't to our liking. We also asked if there would be time to work with Kelli together and her assistant reassured us several times that although we wouldn't be able to be in the shop at the same time (for pandemic reasons, understandable) , that we could either FaceTime and talk through the sketches or that Kelli would come outside so that we could work out what the tattoos would be. Come 1:15, my sister is shown one single sketch (black line work flora with minimal shading as requested) while standing at the front desk and Kelli refuses to come outside to work with us together and it's too loud in the studio to FaceTime. Okay.... then my sister relays from Kelli that NO adjustments would be able to be made today because there "wouldn't be enough time." She was planning on tattooing the same sketch on both of us, and I wasn't allowed to see it or give my opinion until after my sister had it tattooed?. My sister goes ahead and gets the tattoo, and I wait outside until 4PM (that's 3.5 hours for all of you keeping track). My sister finally comes out shell shocked that she spent $450 on JUST her tattoo, and that's before the tip. The tattoo was supposed to take 40 min- hour and it somehow took 2.5 hours. At this point I call into the studio because I still haven't been allowed in even though my appointment started an hour previously. I let them know how frustrated I was and that I would be walking away from my appointment since there was no original sketch, no time for making adjustments, and definitely not enough time for a 2.5 hour, $500 tattoo. I've had seven different tattoo shop experiences and I've never had such an unprofessional artist. The tattoo my sister ended up with is beautiful but the whole point was that we were going to get them together and now it's also going to be this upsetting, frustrating memory where I didn't get mine. The art is not worth working with someone so inflexible and expensive. Highly do not recommend, especially when there is a waitlist. read more

Commissioned my first full chest piece with Dan Dittmer. Unbelievable. Turned out better than I could have imagined! Shop is awesome, Shahn, Jakoba, Jamaeka, and the rest of the squad are all great. Helpful, friendly, insightful and bursting with really good ideas. Dan has been at this for better than 2 decades, and it shows. Detail and color are amazing, incredible design and execution. He makes sure you're comfortable during the session, communicates every aspect of the process in detail, and really makes the whole experience awesome. I have 2 more sessions booked this year and have 3 on the book for next fall already. Love these guys! Be Advised : Dan and Shahn are at least a year out, so plan ahead. Just had my fourth sitting on a back/chest/shoulder piece and love this shop so much I'm not even waiting for it to be done to review. The other reviewers are right that it is a female friendly shop and everyone who works there is professional, helpful and nice. Each artist has their own mini-room with blinds that can be drawn shut if you prefer. All the artists are really talented. I would get tattooed by any of them. Each artist charges differing rates/hour and have varying wait times. Waiting a year for Shahn Anderson was worth it. He's the 2nd most experienced tattooer in MN and runs an extremely sanitary shop. I have gotten tattooed at other shops in the past but will never go anywhere else. Highly recommend EDL to anyone, but especially women! read more

I highly recommend EDT! In my late 40's, I decided to get my first tats with my sister and 18 year-old daughter. Based on a recommendation from a friend, we stopped by EDT. We were all impressed with the cleanliness and professionalism here. I showed pictures of the two tats I wanted and scheduled a consult with a recommended artist, Chuck. After I e-mailed him the designs, I was able to schedule an appointment for the actual tats only two days later, in thanks to a cancellation. Upon my arrival, Chuck already had the stencils ready and was very patient with me as I had him reduce them again...again (did I mention they were my first tats and I'm in my 40's?!). Chuck was awesome! He was very calming and professional, telling me what to expect and what he was doing. My tats were very small and yet he did an amazing job with detail and I am extremely happy with the end results! I highly recommend Chuck and this facility to anyone...first timers to vets.
