I went to Jackalope for the first time a few weeks ago to see Jes for a tattoo and it didn't disappoint. I booked an appointment a few months out for a flash design that spoke to me. Several months before, I received some basic information and instructions and then was emailed more information about a week or so before the appointment. I was a little anxious at first because there were so many guidelines and rules, but the check-in process was quite seamless, and you can tell that the studio cares about health, safety, inclusivity, and security - which is so important! Jes was kind and thorough in explaining the process and aftercare and I absolutely love her work. I hope to be back again! read more

I selected Jackalope Tattoo based on a friend's referral and because their values aligned with mine. After researching the artists there, I contacted Andrea - The Dapper Nomad - as I loved her work and she did cover-ups. Andrea did an amazing job on my cover-up tattoo! She was collaborative and unafraid to share her expertise to make sure the final product was something that was stunning and I would love. The original tattoo had a special meaning but was done in a very impulsive way, so I ended up disappointed as time passed. Andrea was able to take into account the sentimental aspects and rework it into a gorgeous tattoo that better suits me and its symbolism. Her talent, thoughtfulness, and expertise really made this an amazing experience. read more

I had been wanting a tattoo from a Jackalope artist for a long time. I love their shops values as they align with mine. A lot of the artists book up fast, but some of them do flash sales. This is how I was able to get in! Emily had a flash sale and I was picked. My experience at the shop was great! Emily was also very sweet and thorough throughout my tattooing process. Despite the fact that Sam cancelled my appointment, they would not return my deposit or let me view the work my deposit allegedly paid for. I got this, my first tattoo, at the age of 41, it took me awhile to decide what I wanted. I couldn't be happier with the experience or the results! Jacoba never made me feel less than for this being my first tattoo. From day one all the way through Jacoba provided excellent customer service, which seems rare these days. Knowing I could count on her made the whole process easier for me. I chose Jacoba because I wanted to get a realistic tattoo of my cat and saw one of her stunning examples on her instagram page. We met a few months in advance and she walked me through the process and then continued to gently push me for a better picture of what was ultimately my tattoo. I'm glad she did. I was a little nervous about what to expect but I knew I was in good hands and had the best experience, way better than I expected. While I can't speak to the other shops work always, I can safely say that the Jackalope ladies are the friendliest staff around. Beyond that, the arm piece that Katie did for me is AMAZING. I described what I was thinking, Katie nailed it first time with minor tweaks (we're talking one or two lines). But if I would have needed to scrap the whole thing and start from scratch, well I would have felt comfortable doing just that. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. I was in awe the second I stepped through the door. There are beautiful watercolor paintings all over the shop with DINOSAURS integrated into them and jackalope toys or stuffed animals all over too. What's not to love? It felt like this place was made for me (I have a ridiculous love for dinosaurs and had pet bunnies that I adored. Not kidding.) I got my 2nd tattoo here (with Katie) and have another appointment coming up to update my back piece (with Emi). My husband got his 1st tattoo here last month, my best friend got an amazing update on her back piece of her Archaeoptryx, and another college friend has tattoos coming up as well. Addictive? YES. My 2nd tattoo was (in part) an homage to my grandmother. She lived with my family growing up and was like a 2nd mother to me. I got a lyric from a popular children's song in Vietnamese. Katie (my artist) asked me all the right questions and we even had an awesome talk about cultural appropriation. She talked about how they sometimes get people who come in and want Chinese or Japanese characters without knowing what they mean (I reassured her that I am fluent in Vietnamese) or because they think "exotic" equals "cool". Meh. She talked about how she usually just asks people a lot of questions and get them to really think about why they want these characters or not. I am sometimes wary of people's cultural competence when it comes to Asian stuff, but Jackalope Gets It and I so appreciate that. These ladies are smart, nice, and the kind of people I aspire to be. I had first emailed Lauren to book (my first ever) tattoo on January 2. She did not end up replying again until February 5. I asked her to create a design for me in a style that I had seen on their Instagram. Though I didn't love the original design that they sent back, I told them what I would prefer changed, and they acknowledged this. We set an appointment for March 1. When I arrived, they had not completed the new design, and tried to tell me that they didn't know that I had requested any changes, despite their email confirmation that she would make them. After making me wait 45 minutes, they came back and said that they "weren't rocking with the design" and cancelled my appointment. I understand not wanting to tattoo outside of their typical style, but given that they had a work in that style on their Instagram and they had already confirmed that they were going to update the design into that style, it was extremely disappointing. I'm sure the other artists at the studio are really talented, but this experience has put a bad light on the studio as a whole to me. read more

I just got a new tat and realized I still hadn't reviewed Jackalope, where I got my last work done! So, backing way up, I found Jackalope several winters ago when I visited a tattoo convention in Minneapolis. I collected a lot of cards and looked through many portfolios that night, and then Jackalope rose to the top of my list several months later when I looked at even more portfolios online. Everyone at Jackalope is talented so it was hard to narrow down which artist I wanted to work with. But I eventually chose Bambi (who turned out to be the owner). Bambi is a busy lady so it was awhile before I could get a consultation, and a couple months after that before I had my first sitting. But it was worth the wait (and long bus rides!). Bambi was very helpful in piecing together many elements to make a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing half sleeve. I trusted her to make many decisions (and even freehand a few things!!), but she was also open to suggestion as the piece progressed. She was also fun to work with and easy to talk to. I got to know the shop pretty well since my half sleeve was completed over the course of six months. Jackalope is an all female shop, which is not why I went there, but it was definitely a change from the all or primarily male tattoo parlors I'm accustomed to (this was only the third time I've been tattooed by a chick). That being said, there were male customers and this is in no way an anti-male environment. I chose a shop closer to home for my last piece but I would definitely go back to Jackalope. Hands down the best customer service I've ever had. For it being my first tattoo Emi was insanely patient and respectful. From the beginning idea stage staff answered all my questions over Facebook, email, and phone. The amount of time and attention that was given to a potential customer was incredible. Never have I felt such an openness like that where I could ask any and all questions. Emi did a fabulous design and with email exchanges we created a piece that I am proud of. She was prompt in her responses, and before my appointment emailed me the design to ensure it was what we were going for. The shop was clean, open, and everyone was friendly. Katie tattoos me personally, but I would feel confident recommending any of the incredibly talented women who work here. I can't recommend it enough. It can be so intimidating walking into a tattoo salon, especially as a young woman, but Jackalope is completely different. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, the decor is cheerful and quirky, and the artists are talented and kind. Katie has tattooed me thrice so far and I am returning for a fourth in August. I have gotten so many compliments on her work and always recommend her for a great experience. She does such unique and beautiful linework and she is a master at making people feel at ease while they're in the chair. I'm an artist myself, but Katie has consistently exceeded expectations with what little direction I gave her in a way that blows my mind. It's hard to review a tattoo shop because it's so much about connection to the artist and the art, but what I can say is that I have 6 tattoos, each one was done a different shop. This by far has been the best experience with regards to personality, custom work, quality, planning, response time and just general shop vibe. 1) it's an all girl shop- which it's just a nice change I guess. 2) I'm a bigger girl and I can sit in the freaking tattoo chair fairly comfortably so that's something. 3) all the artists there are amazing, every piece of art, every tattoo, every portfolio I've looked at left me staring with my mouth open in awe. It was super hard to even choose an artist in the first place- because they are all amazing. But I chose Amo and I'm glad I did. She captured what I wanted and even more, more than I even realized. 3.5) Super flexible with my needs- this tattoo I'm currently getting is really emotional for me, and I had like a break down in the middle of it, she was super chill and we booked shorter appointments going forward- i.e I guess they are used to emotional girls and their emotional tattoos 4) they book out super far, which I think speaks to the quality and demand of their work, so if you want a good piece - look at the pages, see who's taking appts, then email the artist- and go here, nuff said. As a researcher, I thought long and hard before I chose Jackalope as the studio for my very first tattoo. I was happy to find a salon with all female artists and last week on a whim I called and much to my delight I was lucky enough to get a cancellation appointment for the next day. Of course I had read each artist's bio and was ecstatic when I learned my appointment was with Emi. I wasn't scared, per se, but I did see my hands trembling as I drove to this South Minneapolis fun, funky salon. Emi has a way of assuaging any fear and was kind and gentle and proved to be a very talented artist. When finished she gave explicit instructions for aftercare along with an invitation to contact her if I had any questions or concerns. I went to Jackalope Tattoo for my first tattoo and Katie was my tattoo artist. I am a technical person who likes to feel prepared for anything I get myself into. I did a lot of research to identify which place would offer a comfortable environment and which artist would be best suited to help me design my tattoo. I love Art Nouveau and had known that I wanted my tattoo to be an Art Nouveau inspired Medical ID tattoo for my Type 1 Diabetes. I liked Katie's portfolio online and thought that she would be an excellent person to design my tattoo. I had my consultation with her and I thought she was super fun. I showed her pictures of elements that I liked that I thought would help give her an idea of the style I wanted. I told her who my favorite Art Nouveau artist is and she said he is one of her favorite artists too. I scheduled my appointment 2 months out. At the consultation, I received the impression that she would be sending me sketches here and there as she thought of possible designs and then I'd be able to give her feedback on what I liked and disliked. I liked the idea of being a part of the design process. I told her I thought that black and red ink would work well for the color scheme and later that same day, I decided that a palette of greens and reds would be better. I have an art background, so I had drawn an example tattoo on my arm just to give the basic elements/layout I had in mind which consisted of the text "Type 1 Diabetic" and the classic symbol with the singular snake around the staff in the center. One month before the appointment I asked her when I should be expecting designs from her and received no response. Eventually, it was days before my appointment and having received nothing, I called to reschedule the appointment because I had wanted time to think about which design I wanted. When I called she said she normally drew up the design and sent it out a week before the appointment which she was following. I was confused, and it turned out that I had somehow gotten the wrong date for the appointment and it was a week away. 6 days before the correct appointment date I received three "designs" by email after 10 PM. The designs mostly consisted of what I had drawn up to show her the general concept. The parts of the design that were hers weren't very well thought out spatially, didn't look like Art Nouveau or didn't feel cohesive. I was very disappointed in what I saw because I had been expecting more thought out designs after waiting for over a month. I responded with all the feedback I could give regarding the designs she had sent me, and she didn't respond. The day before my appointment I became very nervous and decided to try my hand at designing my tattoo by myself. I have an art background but had wanted someone else to design my tattoo because an artist never truly feels like their work is finished and I was worried that I would never be content with my own design. I ended up creating something that I really liked. I thought about cancelling the appointment because the whole experience hadn't been what I had wanted nor expected based on the consultation. I sent it to her that night and she said she'd make the stencil for it. I went in for the appointment because I did really like my design but if I hadn't had an art background, I would have only had had her 3 designs less than a week before the appointment that weren't at all what I had been expecting from someone with an art background. At the appointment she said that concerning Art Nouveau her experience was drawing the female element and not the architectural elements like what I had drawn. Everything that I had shown her regarding what I was envisioning was architectural with no females present. I think she should have directed me elsewhere to someone who could create the architectural design I had requested. In the end, she did a really good job at translating my design onto my skin and was very fun to talk to during the tattoo process but, I was not pleased with the design process of my tattoo. She gave me an amazing deal on my tattoo considering that it was colorful and took 3.5 hours to complete. I think the price was to compensate for the frustrating design process. So, to those who are technically minded and like to have lots of correspondence and preparation for things, I'd keep my experience in mind and reschedule if you feel uncomfortable with the design process and timeline. I will say that the space was very clean and comfortable with friendly staff. read more

I got my first tattoo ever with Mo--she is so sweet and great to work with! The tattoo is everything I wanted and more. I'm so happy with it--very clean line work, precise and amazing! I had the absolute BEST experience at Jackalope today. The shop was clean and the staff was insanely friendly. I have had three other artists do work on me and this was by far the best experience I've ever had. Emi started work on my very large thigh piece and was a joy to work with. She designed an amazing tattoo for me, and when I asked if it could be made larger with some additional floral pieces added to it, she didn't even bat an eye. She took the time to make sure I was 100% happy with what was being put on my body and had me talking and laughing through the entire 4.5hrs of line work we did today! I chose Jackalope Tattoo based off these previous Yelp reviews and checking out the artists' portfolios. I went with Jacoba because I liked her mix of lines and abstract and the tattoo I had in mind had feathers and I saw she had done some awesome feather work. For my first ever tattoo, I could not have had a better experience. The consultation was easy and Jacoba was really excited about my idea and how she could make it better. When I came in for my appointment, her drawing was exactly what I had hoped for (but better). The shop is clean and small and all the women who work there are incredibly friendly. Jacoba's pre-tattoo advice was great (hydrate, lotion, eat protein before coming) and I was totally prepared for the work that was going to be done. The music playing in the shop was perfect and exactly what I would have listened to on my own headphones. I really just felt like I was in the right place with the right artist to have this design done after 4 years of thinking. I'm already planning my next tattoo! I am not new to tattoos but today was my first trip (and certainly not my last trip) to Jackalope Tattoo. I have been wanting to go to the small tattoo shop over in the Powderhorn neighborhood for sometime now and I finally had the opportunity today. I really liked how easy going and friendly the staff was. Shop owner Bambi made it really easy to try to fit me in on a walk in Sunday as early as possible despite being booked up until 8 in the evening and lengthy bus commute. Fortunately for me, Mo had an early afternoon opening and was able to fit me into her schedule. The shop is small but it is clean and fun to look at with a lot of art work by Bambi and the occasional jackalope, the store's mascot. Mo was super fun to work with, easily my favorite artist who has done work on my body. I love the results of her work. I'm writing this for a trans friend to protect their name. They are happy with their tat but deeply disappointed to have been misgendered, repeatedly, by an artist who only laughed when corrected. (Corrected about five times but continued misgendering at least five more times). This shop was chosen specifically because this shop offers itself as friendly to the queer/ trans community. So this is a specific alert to other trans people. You'll get a good tattoo but it may not be any more friendly to your person than any other place. read more
