(I know I sound like I'm glowing, but it's only because we were just constantly pleased!) The fruit, French toast, and sausage were all fresh (and plentiful), and the freshly whipped cream was a happy asset for both toast and coffee. The first room I was given smelled horrendously of cigarette smoke, so badly that my eyes started watering within seconds of entering the room. I went back down to the front desk and requested a new room. The guy started doing some things on the computer, then another employee walked in and they started speaking in Russian or some other Cyrillic language for several seconds. Kind of weird, because the second guy had greeted me when I first arrived, and he seemed perfectly fluent in English. It just seemed weird that two people who both seemed fluent in English would switch, discuss something, and then the first guy completed the discussion with me in English. The second guy, the one who had originally greeted, had red eyes and looked high AF. Just a really bizarre experience. I got to my second room and immediately noted that it sounded like a window was open. I checked, and it was. There was a faint smell of cigarette smoke in the room, and I am fairly certain that this window was left open to dissipate the smell. I turned on the lights and noticed that the placard on the phone was yellow with nicotine stain. Wtf? This is a fairly modern looking hotel. Certainly renovated not very long ago. What modern hotel has nicotine stains? Then I needed to use the toilet, and discovered that the bathroom stank horribly of cigarette smoke. Like someone had been smoking in there immediately before I entered the room. And it still stank just as strongly in the morning when I woke up. I think someone had been smoking in the bathroom with the exhaust fan on, thinking that it would magically make the stink not go everywhere else. I went downstairs for breakfast and there were biscuits on the hot food display. Just biscuits. No eggs, no bacon or sausage or anything else for hot food. I grabbed a biscuit and some jelly. I went to get a glass of orange juice, and the machine just discharged water. This was at 7:00, and breakfast hours start at 6:30. It's not like I got down to the breakfast area right at the beginning of breakfast and they hadn't had time yet to bring the rest of the food out or restock the juice machine with concentrate mix. If you're traveling into Dubuque, avoid this place. It smells bad, the breakfast is literally just biscuits, and you can't even get a glass of orange juice to wash down your biscuit.

Let me tell you the story of how our mother-daughter haunted tour date almost got ruined…read more My grandma bought my mom, my aunt, and me tickets for Amelia's Galena Ghost Tours at 6 p.m. There was nothing anywhere saying we needed to arrive early. We got there right at 6, parking directly behind the DeSoto house where the website said we would be meeting -- but there was no bus in sight. We started running around trying to find it, even went to their store, only to find the door locked and no one around. About 20 minutes later, my mom called to explain that we had arrived on time but no one was there. The lady on the phone said they had waited 20 minutes for us, looked for us, and then left. But if she had really been waiting, we would have seen her -- and definitely would have seen the bus! When my mom asked if we could move to the 7 p.m. tour instead, the lady said no because she "can't just give up the empty seats," and she wasn't very kind about it either. Eventually, she texted us later saying we could join the 7:30 p.m. tour for free. We decided to wait at a nearby restaurant and have a drink before the tour. We left around 7:12 to find the bus, got on, and they departed at 7:20. (10 minutes early) Our tour guide, Emily, was great -- she was super sweet and friendly. The driver (maybe the boss?) didn't seem as welcoming; she never spoke to us once and only talked during the investigation at the haunted house they own.

If I had been more proactive, I would have avoided spending time and money on this tour. My family of 6 was over $200... definitely not worth the money. After the tour, I sat down to write/read the reviews. Each negative review repeatedly said the same thing, so I decided not to repeat what has already been said. Apparently, these negative reviews have not made any difference because nothing has changed. I guess I just don't understand how a company can be satisfied knowing so many customers are dissatisfied.
