So, I'd be remiss not to dine here. As for beer, Whitstable was on tap and described to me as "like a Guinness." I was in the mood for a Guinness and I think this beer was more satisfying for my tastes. Slightly malty and refreshing. Good creamy head on it. Smooth flavor, texture and clean finish. Now the haggis seems to come in a starter size and entree size. I went with the smaller size as I wanted to save room for Sheperd's Pie. I can't help but think of Bart Simpson asking Groundskeeper WIllie "what's haggis?" Willie goes on to describe haggis in an unflattering manner. And jokes like this have perpetuated the idea that haggis is gross. But this haggis was the single best thing I ate during my London food holiday. Shaped like a meatball with a tight snap on the exterior, similar to the snap on a sausage. Nice complexity. The grains in the haggis were not mere filler, but lent a crunchy textural nuance and complimented the meat with an oaty flavor. Soft and savory. The hot messy interior is made for gravy. Gravy adds concentrated umami beefiness. Mash is very smooth with a perfect balance of salt and savory potato flavor. The consistency is both very smooth and on the denser end of the spectrum. Shepherd pie plays on a similar potato and meat theme with the addition of cheese. First, there is the crust, a soft, gooey, stretchy layer of cheese, which lends an addicting fattiness and tang to the pie. After penetrating and pulling back this top layer, the meaty lamb aroma is intoxicating. A layer of potatoes tops the mince and seems to be stewing in a gravy. Eating it becomes an addicting mess of meat gravy cheese and mash. If you are in London and looking for a classic meal, make a trip to Boisdale of Bishopsgate.

My coworker and I arrived at 8pm on a Thursday and planned to eat in the bar area but after speaking with the hostess we were surprised to find that a reservation didn't show for their table and we were seated in the downstairs dinning room. We had some Lagavulin scotch, a haggis appetizer, and the evenings special which was a stuffed chicken. It was all absolutely perfect! Then we ordered a couple Montecristo Cuban cigars to enjoy after dinner outside in the entry alley. I've eaten all over the world and this was a perfect experience! Make the effort to find and enjoy a dinner here!

Welcome to Highgate, Popeseye. What a great addition to Highgate/Archway food scene you are…read more As Archway locals we in our household are lucky to have myriad of eateries to choose from at all hours of the day and night, so the fact that we have ventured to Popeseye twice in a month after we found out about its relatively new opening should speak volumes in itself. It is just a perfect addition to the neighbourhood - right on the main road, easily accessible from the tube but quiet, and unlike many quick grab and go eateries in the area, genuinely a lovely place to sit down, even if it should be for a full nice evening or say, a date. All that for nonprohibitive prices for a steakhouse, and we have a winner. Atmosphere is really lovely and cozy: what really serves this space right is that it is partitioned into two parts - so even if it is full, you retain quite an intimate atmosphere (that being said, on Tuesday's jazz and steak nights, when all the visitors tend to gather in the back area around the band, don't be discouraged by the seemingly empty front part which you get to see from the front windows are you are walking by!). But let's be real, atmosphere and location is nice, but steakhouses are about meat, meat, meat! Popeseye has not dissapointed me on this front. The five weeks hung grass-fed beef steaks are very flavoursome and juicy. The cuts are generous and the steaks are finished just right. So far I've tried a sirloin and their 'Jazz and Steak Tuesdays' special of 6oz rump and they were both exactly as should be. All steaks come with a generous side of fries and a big selection of sauces for the table (standard and dijon mustard, hollandaise, ketchup, horseradish, etc.). The Tuesday special for £15 includes the 6oz steak, fries, sauces, and one small glass of wine - definitely a good deal. (NB for the jazz lovers - from what I've seen, the musicians have been quite liberal with their interpretation of jazz, but hey - this is not a jazz bar and they were still good musicians and on tune, so I don't see a reason to put my judgmental hat on). Everyone was too full to sample the extensive whiskey and desert menu, but look - if you are smart and unlike us, don't order the phenomenally cheesy, home meals memories inducing mac and cheesy for the table, maybe you can give that a shot :). Both times service was knowledgeable about their meat, pleasant and efficient. I left as a happy meateater and I will be back.

My initial review below from three years ago stands: wonderful experience!…read more However, the most recent dinner experience with my friend 2 weeks ago dampened it. The owner/manager was super jovial when we stepped in and during dinner. Wonderful food as always and an excellent Falanghina pairing. My friend enjoyed her tiramisu. Very good service. At leaving, I asked for one of the Italian chocolate bonbons priced at £1.50. And since I didn't have cash (it's 2026 for God's sake get over it ), that same owner/manager mood switched FAST. Suddenly there was a scowl and MOOD when he got the card machine. Didn't even respond when we said thank you as we left. We had spent almost £90 between the two of us. If we were in Italy, we would get the friggin bonbon or limoncello on the house. Once again crappy customer service rears its head. Shame on you. 3 years ago: Like others have said, what a great little spot, tucked away on a quiet street. Italians run the place so you know it's genuine. Cozy, quick service, very amiable (and a quite attractive waiter from Palermo!) My friend and I split the crab pasta, cod with lentils and the chocolate fondant. The pasta was fresh and perfectly al dente, with a delicious buttery flavour. The cod was plump and juicy, expertly cooked, and I was delighted with the huge amount of lentils. A treat! The fondant could be plated differently- honestly it looks like a poop smear- but it was utterly delicious to end the night, with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. The wine carafe was a bit too expensive at £23 (!!) but the suggested dry white wine choice from Sardinia was delicious. Overall a wonderful experience and I would return.

By night, it looked warm and inviting. But we never judge books by their covers. That's a fool's errand. Instead, we look at yelp and then at other reviews that the reviewers wrote. What we read was intriguing enough to walk across the street and in the door. There was one table in use when we walked in. We asked for a table and were led to the back room and told to take the two-top of our choice. A young woman, who was apparently being trained shared the responsibility of taking care of us under the tutelage of an experienced server. They were both wonderful although my wife told me to quit joking with the younger server because she could see that I was causing confusion or consternation or both. We ordered: Minestrone Soup - 5 - THE BEST Minestrone Soup that we've EVER HAD, EVER! Pappardelle with Pork Ragu - 5 - OMG, the PASTA! Ribbons of perfection. And the Ragu was pretty darned good too. Gamberoni Fregula - 5 - Never really a fan of couscous, Fregula is similar with the primary difference that it is made by hand rather than by machine. It was the perfect support and accompaniment for the large Prawns on top of the dish. Spinach - 5 - We needed some kind of veg besides what we got in the soup and this simple spinach dish hit the spot. Bread & Oil - 5 - It was good enough to take the leftover bread home with us to toast and butter the next morning. Apple Fruit Tart - 5 - Flakey, buttery and just the right sweetness to support the apple which still had a bite to it. And of course, the Vanilla Ice Cream was good too. Tiramisu - 5 - They have permanently ruined all future Tiramisu for us. No one has ever made such a delicious creation. It was NOT packed with drunken Lady Fingers. It may have only had three or four suspended in a creamy custard held together by a lovely thin tuille and then dusted in cocoa. We were seriously thinking about going back just to have Minestrone Soup and Tiramisu but decided that we had to try some of the other restaurants nearby. We did go to another Italian restaurant nearby and were so disappointed. That restaurant had shared tables and when we saw how disappointed our seatmates were with their orders, we suggested to them to go to Locanda del Melo for the Tiramisu and all would be better. They were intrigued so we walked them over and said our good nights as they entered the restaurant.

No, I decided I'd abandon the Time-Out guided Sunday masses and wonder the wrong way down Brick Lane in search of authentic options. And because of that my lunch for £2.40 consisted of two of the best spinach samosas I've ever had and two hearty but dry fish cakes. It was window placement of these savoury cakes, samosas and pakoras that magnetised me into Ambala. The rest of the shop was largely devoid of the Bangla sweets they profess, but do I look like I'm bothered? It was lunch time, I wanted something salty, satisfying and solid value and I found it in spades. Next time you do the sunday brick lane thing, give Ambala a look.
