It's cozy, crowded, and buzzing with life -- often standing room only and packed shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and travelers alike. If you're a whisky fan (or even just whisky-curious), do yourself a favor and try one of their Scotland whisky flights. It's like taking a mini tour of the country's whisky regions without ever leaving your barstool -- and without worrying about driving. The bartenders really know their stuff and are happy to guide you toward something you'll love. A quick heads-up: no football colors allowed, which keeps the atmosphere friendly and relaxed no matter who you support. And speaking of friendly -- the locals here are as welcoming as they come. This is exactly the kind of place where Scotland's famous pub culture shines. Prices are surprisingly reasonable too, so you can sample a few drams without feeling guilty. Whether you're a seasoned whisky nerd or just looking to experience the local vibe, this is the spot. Pull up a stool (if you can find one) and enjoy a proper Scottish night out

This may prompt you to feel like ordering a drink. You are in good hands and they can totally recommend something that you may like. Their selection is so huge they don't have a menu, you just have to ask for your label or take their recommendations. Naturally, most of the selection is Scottish whiskey, but if you somehow prefer otherwise, (say you are a local tired of Scotch... or just want to reaffirm nothing beats a Scotch?) they do offer whiskey from other countries, as well as beer and ciders, as well as gin, rum and the like. They do offer pies and other bar food, but we went after dinner and just couldn't stomach more food, tempting as they may sound.

'The new bar's called the Currrrly Coo.' It rolled off our tongues easily and was playful and fun. - I'm a 'Weegie so, naturally, I love to roll my rs! Now, wait a second...Here was me getting all excited about the latest whisky bar in town when I don't even drink the stuff! Alas, they have a great selection of other lovely things. My favourites being gin and that very, very tasty Elderflower Thistly Cross cider. I've been in the Coo a few times now and whilst it is still on the quiet side as a new bar, it seems to be growing in popularity little by little. Mandy, the owner, is an intense but lovely lady who is strict about her rules in turning the pub around from the rowdy, loud reputation it had previously. She certainly knows her stuff about whiskey, with a 'drammy' award for her previous bar in Creiff and plans for whisky tasting nights in the near future. With every visit, there's been a new quirk to her bar. - I love the book collection and the super teeny whisky bottles. Not to mention the painting of the 'Coo' in question in the corner. It would be nice to see some candles, I think that would really fit with the feel of the bar. When we had been booked as a band to play an hour set at the Coo, we were nervous. On our first visit we were the only people in the bar and Mandy told us of the folk music scene she wanted to welcome to the pub. It didn't sit well with the fact that the jukebox played generic pop songs. And that's one of the major factors for me for the pub. With some nice music, the bar changes completely! We put some Dylan on the jukebox and, with a little bit of folk, it certainly feels closer to the folk-whiskey haven Mandy's been dreaming of. Prices are a little on the expensive side but what you're getting really is premium. With 150 varieties of whiskey, a hefty gin collection and the most popular local ciders all in one place, you're spoiled for choice. Whilst at first I was unsure of the Curly Coo, I only hope that things improve because this bar has so much potential. Just be sure to take some money for the jukebox!

As someone who truly loved little about Scotch, it was a wonderful way to taste and compare smoky vs peaty whiskeys. Fun. Our table was upstairs and we sat next to an open door which allows for fresh cool air. It was a warm day in Edinburgh. Our server was wonderful, patient and really helpful. Our choices were truly delicious. We started with the fish board, olives, and mushroom skewer. We loved them all. I enjoyed the cod main dish, while my wife finished the starters. The side of asparagus was also excellent. The mouse dessert was delicious but very rich, it's enough for 4 people. The cost of dinner was also totally reasonable. I recommend this place highly.

The one weird thing -- we were unsure when we arrived how hungry we would be, and the menu is a bit limited. We decided to order just the cheese board and see where we were after that. We were told that once we placed an order, we would not be permitted to put in any more food due to a "small kitchen." I have never heard this rule worded in quite this way. I have been to places that prefer you place everything at once, but not that you would absolutely not be allowed to order more food if you found yourself hungry. We witnessed another table leave because of this rule. The server communicated this rule quite gruffly. The restaurant was also not very busy at all, so couldn't have been crowding concerns. I would definetly recommend for drinks and apps, but, for dinner, perhaps elsewhere.

I don't drink alcohol, but their online mocktail menu looked great, and when my friends made the reservation, the staff confirmed they'd be happy to accommodate me and that I could order a drink at the bar. I was genuinely excited given the variety of mocktails listed. The space is gorgeous, and even without drinking, the whisky selection is fun to explore - the names alone are worth a chuckle. The staff were warm, and our whisky-tasting guide was both knowledgeable and entertaining. After we settled in, I headed to the bar to order a mocktail, and I probably should have stopped while things were still going smoothly. The bartender ended up calling over an off-duty staff member because they were "between menus." He was extremely friendly, asked thoughtful questions about what I liked, and said he'd come up with something based on what ingredients they had. The drink was delivered to me later in the tasting room, and it was... fine. Interesting, with a smoky note - perhaps an attempt to give me a peaty, Scottish experience - but not quite to my taste. When I paid, I'll admit the price surprised me, as my mocktail cost more than a friend's dram of whisky. My friend later mentioned that it also felt like a miss that I wasn't given a cheese tasting tray alongside everyone else, especially since our group nearly bought out the tasting. My place setting was empty until my drink arrived. I didn't think of it at the time or feel entitled to anything, but offering a "no-alcohol" tasting option - a mocktail or NA beverage plus the cheese pairing - would be an exceptionally thoughtful addition for guests who accompany drinkers. As the sober friend tagging along, the experience was perfectly okay and largely in line with what I expected - but with a couple of small tweaks, it could have felt much more inclusive.

How bloody cool is this place!? It's like something out an episode of Luther. Not in a serial killer hiding in the toilet type of way, but in a cool, dark, moody atmospheric type of way. I can imagine Luther standing downing whiskeys at the bar. Ok im rambling, but hopefully by now you understand I like this place. It is very dark inside, but it seems to be just enough light. There is no sign outside. It's to cool for signs or it's so popular that it does not need to advertise? Word of mouth is enough for this bar. They also don't have a menu online and the website is basic. This all flys in the face of most other bars now, who are all are busy trying to build their social media profile, giving you offers and trying to draw you in. Anyways enough background. Tempura prawns to start. They were huge and the sweet chill sauce that was with it was great to. On to the main which was a huge house burger rammed with chorizo, Chilli's, chorizo, an onion ring, etc. There is so many other burger places in Glasgow now, but the burger on offer here is as good as anything you will get elsewhere. Finally on the side there was a portion of great skinny fries and a bottle of anchor steamer. The menu was small but certainly had lots more I would like to try, there was a good variety of beer on offer and the service was great. Dinner made me happy tonight.

And I have to say it was love at 1st bite! Since the 1st meal, I went back quite a few times, each time service was great and friendly, Garvie just has a nice cozy feel to it. The 1st time I ordered a pint of beer and the Roast Breast of Chicken wrapped in Parma ham on top of truffle mashed potato with sautéed gem lettuce with peas and pancetta and peppercorn sauce, oh man was this dish perfection, and the truffle mashed potato was divine! Another time at the Garvie again, I ordered a flat white and carrot cake, oh sweet bliss, this was a darker carrot cake then ones I have had before and the frosting was not the cream cheese type nor a buttercream type either, it just was perfectly sweet and complemented the cake perfectly. Ever since my 1st visit I had been craving the truffle mashed potatoes and knew I had to go back one more time before I left, so my last meal at the Garvie was the Garvie & Co Club, it had chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato and topped with a fried egg came with a salad and I added a side of the truffle mashed potatoes, this sandwich was perfect, loved the fried egg on it, so good, the truffle mashed potatoes were still just as good at the 1st time. If you in the area, give the Garvie a try, I bet you won't be disappointed.

As long as we "weren't there for food" they could accommodate us. For the record: we were here for an hour, and no one else came in during that time. The whisky options were impressive featuring something from all the regions of Scotland, and we also appreciated their cider and cocktail options. In the end we each had one drink, but genuinely felt a bit disinterested and disappointed by the place on the whole after the hype we had read/heard.
