Ron is without question the best contractor that I have ever worked with. He is detail oriented, a good communicator, VERY knowledgeable (he's been doing this for decades), and very obviously committed to doing a good job and making sure that people are happy with the result. He's also a genuinely nice person to work with. Being a detail-oriented person myself I had lots of questions for him throughout the process. He always took the time to explain things to me and if needed alter how he was doing things to fit our needs. He even took the tine to answer other questions about the house that weren't related to the job. The quality of the renovation depends in large part on the quality of the subcontractors. Ron works with a set group of contractors / companies (plumbers, tile installers, furniture makers, etc.) which he has developed a close relationship over the years. I have consistently been impressed with the quality of their work and they are all genuinely nice/reliable people. It gets tiring over the weeks having strangers in and out of your house and everyone to a person that he works with has been a nice person, obviously committed to their work but also happy to stop and explain exactly what they're doing and why. I think it's a testament to the relationship that Ron has built with these contractors that many of them have told me privately and unbidden how much they respect Ron and enjoy working for him (or in the case of companies to which we have been referred have smiled when we told them who had sent us and told us that we were in good hands). One final note. It is apparently common practice for tile workers to pour off their tailings into people's back yards, despite the fact that this practice is banned by the EPA and illegal in some cities (it is in West Linn where I checked). Given our extensive gardens I balked at this; Ron was surprised that I had an issue with it, but then worked to come up with a workaround that we could all agree on. I'm just putting this in so that if you care about this (it will definitely affect the plants in your yard and also can contaminate the ground water) you can request that whoever you work with develop a different strategy (we let it settle in barrels, poured off the cleanish water into some gravel, and sent the rest of the goop to be disposed of).

HM's representatives were great and very accommodating; they showed up on time and kept us comprised of the progress at each point along the way. Plus, the workmanship was excellent, and we are extremely happy with the result. But what distinguishes Hamish Murray from other good contractors is his honesty and integrity. About a year after the end of the project, I contacted them about leakage through a new retaining wall. Hamish himself came out to take a look. He decided it needed to be excavated and waterproofed, and that a drainage pipe should be installed. Moreover, he is doing all this new work for free, because he believed it was a mistake on their part not to do it during the construction period. Now THAT'S integrity! I would give them 10 stars if I could.

Fast forward 20 years and we reached a point in life where we could afford to turn our place into what we always knew it could be. Hamish Murray was extremely flexible when it came to the bidding process and the various hoops we had to jump through to for the bank to finance our construction loan (check out Clackamas County Bank.) With Hamish Murray the price they quoted you is the price you're going to pay. While we made them suffer through countless change orders as we added mid-project upgrades, never did I hear that something was going to cost more than was originally quoted. I grew up working on wooden boats and old houses on the east coast, so often when I look at modern construction it doesn't feel like it has the same craftsman attention to detail as you'd see in early 20th century work. That's not the case with Hamish Murray. The subs they used cared deeply about their craft and you can tell in every corner. If something looked at all sloppy, it was redone without question or cost to me. Concrete was re-poured, cabinets were repainted - the level of quality assurance was what you'd expect out of a builder making their own home. Every morning as I have my coffee I feel like I'm on vacation in a fancy boutique hotel, but its my kitchen! Every night as tuck in the kids and lock up, I feel like I'm already in a dream. Hamish Murray made it happen, and we're deeply thankful.

It's also hard to verify whether you need what a contractor proposes since you often can't access the roof, or know what to look for... But Aaron and his crew took all that worry away. From the first call, I knew they were different. Fully responsive. Clear communication. Two of his crew went up (three story house!) and came back down with a load of helpful images. Aaron then outlined the plan in terms anyone could understand. They got the work done, on time, and shared photos post-repair. And he guarantees his work for 5 years- I believe that is rare or unheard of. I just felt really good working with this crew.

However, just two years into living in our 2-1/2 year old home (we're the first and only owners), multiple appliances have failed, parts of the furnace needed replacing (multiple times), the generator constantly malfunctions due to incorrect installation, the tankless hot water heater has had issues AND was installed incorrectly (to the point we've had to have it re-plumbed for simple maintenance), the rain gutters are too small for the home, faucets have broken, and rain water drainage issues have caused damage to our neighbor's property. This list goes on... We feel deceived by Renaissance's apparent corner-cutting during construction, despite charging a premium. If considering them for an existing or custom-built home, caution is advised.

I did some research and seen the Craftsman Design and Renovation van around the neighborhood. I called and the office person was wonderful and she said the owner would call me back to discuss next steps. Well today I talked to the owner and outlined my process so far. I had mentioned I started my search at Home Depot and had an idea of cabinets and countertops. He said he was a design build firm and people come to them to design, this was said in what I felt was a dismissive tone. The conversations started to take a turn. I said "don't customers have an idea of colors?". He then went to tell me that his company does remodels in the ballpark of 50K. He never asked me the size of my home or my budget. I guess my money is not good enough. I can only imagine the communication on a project if this is how the first impression went. UPDATE: the owner of Craftsman Design and Build got wind of this post and called to make this right. He did sincerely apologize. He called because he wanted this post down/revised. I understand that a bad review here can be hurtful to a business. I use reviews here to learn and choose where to spend my $. I am updating my rating a smidge because he did reach out to me.
