It's a beautiful equestrian center, but I didn't feel welcome there at all. Even though I'm an intermediate level rider and have been taking lessons for a few years, my first riding lesson with Val was conducted totally on the ground with the horse. I had some physical issues due to arthritis, and had to postpone/ cancel a few lessons. After a few weeks, Val ghosted me. I called, texted, and emailed, requesting when I would be able to come back and take riding lessons (Val had told me that the horse she wanted me to ride had some physical issues, and wouldn't be available for riding for a while). She never even bothered to respond to me... very unprofessional. Don't bother going there unless you are a highly experienced competitive rider and have a very expensive horse to board there. Very unwelcoming and disappointing place.

My initial euphoria with this barn was based on the outstanding care my colt received after he was…read moregelded. I brought him back to my original barn and found his behavior issues were still a problem, so he returned to The Hideout with full care board plus $250 per month of "training" and turn out with other horses. After two months, he has actually reverted. There is no indication that he received any training. It took 90 mins to get him out of the barn and loaded onto the trailer. He doesn't respect boundaries, won't lead without crowding, rushes doorways. He had a total of four months training at The Hideout, with no appreciable results. Perhaps young horses are not their forte. Val and her staff are caring, competent horse people, but paying for training my young colt was a waste of money.

She can also ride sidesaddle, and has trained many riders in preparation for the Mongol Derby. Her understanding of what a rider needs to do for each individual horse, in order to achieve maximum performance, is astonishingly deep. New riders become expert riders surprisingly fast. But what I enjoyed most as an experienced rider coming to Horsehaven is how Solange can prove, through demonstration and practical trial, how tiny changes in seat, balance and aids can greatly improve the horse's movement.

Recently we boarded horses at this facility owned by Lisa Powers. At first things seemed ok until…read morewe found out that she wasn't giving the horses hay even though we were promised 5 flakes a day, her pastures have no grass in them, she keeps moldy round bales and scummy water. She barely puts any bedding in the horses stalls the pastures are filthy full of garbage and re-bar she always complains that everybody is doing something to be mean to her and if you argue or complain she will tell you to leave. If your horse becomes ill or is injured she will not call a vet. She will then tell you she called a vet but won't tell you the vets name and the vets name is rubbed off of all prescription medicine bottles. I have never seen someone care so little about horses and not be on animal police we called the Ohio department of agriculture and will be in contact with many other animal rights societies because this woman has killed a horse due to negligence and if you take your horse there you will be as unhappy as we were.

Family Stable is the friendliest, most helpful stable I have ever experienced…read more They have trained, safe, desensitized horses to ride and are willing to offer help whenever needed. Everyone there works as a team. The owner, Mike, and his three sons are down-to-earth people who take the best care of customers. So are their other staff. Riding around Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds and in the Metroparks of Berea is a relaxing, fun experience. There is a little creek we sometimes cross, which people and horses like. The only drawback of the stable is the lack of pasture turnout for boarders. This could be good for me because I hope to stable my fat pony there so he does not eat too much pasture grass. I also hope to have Mike's son Hakeem (sp?) help me train this pony because Hakeem is a gifted horse trainer. He must get this from his father, Mike.
