Do you remember the very first time that you tried bubble tea? It was likely some time in the late 90s or early 00s, which is about when this beverage started to become more ubiquitous in Canada. Invented in the late 80s in Taiwan, this drink is incredibly synonymous with Taiwanese culture. There are now massive bubble tea chains and unlimited versions to try. However, I will always have a special place in my heart for Edmonton's Dream Tea. Voted #1 Best Bubble Tea Shop 2018 in VUE Weekly's annual poll, Dream Tea is kind of like the "original" bubble tea shop in Edmonton. Their very first location opened in Old Strathcona (technically Queen Alexandra) back in 2003 and they have continued to expand ever since. Now with six locations in the city, Dream Tea is a wonderful example of an Edmonton-born business that has been providing amazing bubble tea for the past 18 years. I've visited Dream Tea many, many times over the years and "my location" has always been the original one in Old Strathcona. The shop has always operated more like a cafe and very much like a casual place to hang out. Their cloud logo and bright blue lettering is easy to spot when you visit the strip mall shopping area where they're located. They've done a few renovations over the years (the space has been modernized quite a lot) but the vibe has always remained the same; it's a quirky cafe with comfortable tables, a busy and social atmosphere, and there's usually awesome Asian pop music playing. And the board games! Dream Tea might very well be one of the original board game cafes, because being well-stocked with games to play has been part of their business model since the beginning. The staff is friendly and ready to whip up any one of their 100+ drinks on offer. With literally so many options to choose from, bubble tea can sometimes be overwhelming (especially for first-timers). Dream Tea attempts to simplify the experience by creating clear menu categories and even offering a "Dream Tea Top 10 Picks" list. Do you want something fruity? Maybe more tea based? They've got everything from real fruit bubble tea (great in the summer), avocado drinks, milkshakes, slush drinks, fresh fruit tea, milk tea, and even just normal coffee. Almost all of these options include tapioca. The tapioca (the black pearls that you see in the drinks) are the whole thing - that's what you come for. However, these have also expanded to include other types of jellies and even pudding. You could never try all of the possible combinations because there are just too many. When I first started to get into bubble tea, I personally enjoyed drinking many of the milk tea varieties because they seemed to be the most like actual tea. I mean, it is called bubble "tea," after all. Dream Tea has a drink on the menu called Original Milk Tea, and that's honestly where I would start if you want to get in on the ground floor. From there, I eventually moved myself over to the Mixed Flavours Bubble Tea section because this seemed to be where Dream Tea was creating their most signature beverages. These drinks are all given special names and are made up of an array of ingredients and flavours. It wasn't long before I discovered Dream (Taro + coconut with tapioca & lychee jelly - $5.90) and it has been my go-to ever since. I mean, this bubble tea is named after the restaurant. It's gotta be the one. It is typical to be asked how you want the texture of the ice to be prepared and how much sugar sweetness you want incorporated. I usually don't change anything and have them make my drinks "regular" across the board. Dream is a perfect bubble tea in my opinion. It's purple, which is fun, and the combination of taro and coconut are such an ideal mix of tropical Asian flavours and delightful sweetness. It's cold and creamy. I also love that you not only get the delicious chewy tapioca balls but also lychee jelly, which is probably one of the best jellies. (It tastes exactly like lychee.) Instead of trying to make bubble tea something else, enjoy it for what it should be! This version accomplishes exactly that. I also wanted to note that I was thoroughly impressed to see that Dream Tea has switched their straws to compostable ones. The big, fat, colourful straws used for bubble tea are quite iconic, however they create a whole lot of plastic waste. I appreciated seeing that Dream Tea is conscious of this and is doing their part. There is also a food menu. The idea is to offer snacks so that when you're sitting around playing board games with your friends, you've got something to munch on. The items aren't quite enough to make an entire meal out of, although you can certainly try! Sure, they've got several types of fries to choose from but I was much, much more interested in focusing my efforts on their most authentic dishes. They have some great Asian snacks, including items from Japan and Korea, but it had to be Taiwan all the way for me. Taiwan Style Fried Chicken (Salt, pepper & Chinese

The atmosphere of this place is very hip. There's lots of seating and is a nice place to catch up with friends. We ordered the matcha snow bingsoo, mango snow bingsoo, and green apple boba drink. The bingsoo took a very long time to be served, and the ice wasn't shaved down in consistent pieces. I did, however, really enjoy the mochi on the matcha bingsoo. The green tea boba was tart and refreshing, but there was nothing too unique about it. When I used the restroom, it was incredibly messy and there was no toilet paper. The area to put trays and dirty dishes was also piled very high, so it seems that the servers may have been too preoccupied making the desserts and drinks to keep up with other parts of the restaurant. At least there's a lot of variety to order from.

Busy place! But they have board games!

Bubble tea haven! If you haven't experienced the addictiveness of bubble tea before this is the best place to start. Not sure what to try? Go for one of the top picks- I'm so glad they have that labelled really well now it makes it super easy to experience with new friends. But some of my favourite go to choices: sunflower and dream. A couple weird choices you might not think of getting but are SO good: sesame, red bean, and taro (if love purple and sweet totally get a taro). Sago and jelly? Don't worry if you don't like these gummy things that make you feel like your chewing your drink just ask them not to put it in. Personally I'm a fan and used to ask for double the amount of both- I've hence lowered that addiction so my bubble tea looks more normal now. Dream Tea house off whyte Ave is one of the best locations- with a new Reno this place is beautiful and they have board games you can sign out to play(just make sure you bring ID). Parking is good for a couple hours but be cautious they watch the time limits really closely here. On a side note this place is busy! Expect a bit of a line but they can seriously pump out the bubble tea's fast! And don't forget t get yourself a stamp card- for every 9 drinks get the 10th one free!

This bubble tea joint has been open since my high school days, and it brings along nostalgia and memories of various events through my life - so it was only appropriate that I visit when I'm back in town! It has definitely come a long way 10+ years ago, especially with the new renovations and additions to the menu. I was excited to try out some of their new drinks! Atmosphere: 3.5/5 New renovations and conveniently located off whyte ave, with good parking availability since it is in a mall. Neat paintings which I haven't noticed before, and as a fan of Asian pop music, it is always nice to catch some familiar tunes from back in the day. There are also various games that can be signed out. However, it can get quite busy and loud later on in the night. Another thing is that it can be difficult to find a garbage can within the restaurant itself to dispose of our drinks once we are done. Food: 4/5 I generally like the bubble tea here - I suppose it is because this is one of the first shops that opened so it is still the "original" in my mind. Huge menu with various creative concoctions! Nowadays, I tend to go for the unsweetened original bubbletea with 1/2 tapioca, but I have also tried some of their fruit teas, their sea salt milk cap, and jasmine milk tea. The milk teas are a little milky to me, but there are always options to add less sugar, ice, or substitute with various forms of milk, which is a nice change from the past. There are now coffee options, as well as various snacks. The most recent additions are bingsu... which is also a new trend in the dessert world nowadays! Unfortunately they seem huge- so I have been hesistant to try... but the watermelon one ordered by the table next to us looked delicious! Service: 3.5/5 Overall friendly and efficient staff Price: 3/5 Reasonable for bubble tea and size. I do wish they took credit card though. Overall: 4/5 Overall I enjoy this location perhaps because it is so convenient, open at later hours, and brings back lots of memories. When at a loss of things to do, it is nice to just be able to sit down and chat over bubbletea. I am curious about the new additions to the menu and would definitely like to try other items some day!

A Mango Dream Bubble Tea with Lychee and a small serving of fries for only a dollar extra, great deal!

I was pretty impressed by the bubble tea I had here, and I intend on coming back for more in the future. The service was good, a nice cozy atmosphere with card games to offer for groups, and they have a menu of decent food to appreciate for an added bonus! Definitely drop by if you're a fan of a good casual time with friends!

One of my favorite places in Edmonton, Dream Tea offers quality bubble tea and is just a fun place to relax with friends on a lazy weekend night. Their menu is quite extensive, and if you don't know what you want at first, it might take awhile to peruse all the choices. They offer everything from basic bubble tea to shaved ice and sandwiches. But you can always ask one of their friendly staff for help in choosing a selection. The atmosphere is fun and laid-back, even more so if you can snag some sofa-seating. These are usually reserved for large groups of five or more, so go early or make your reservations. If you don't really like large crowds, avoid the late-night rush by coming before 11pm. After that, you might be waiting awhile for your order, as it will be peak bubble-tea rush hour. They even have an occasional line-up for quick come-and-go orders. The staff are usually pretty efficient though, given the size of the crowd. There are also magazines, jenga and Chinese checkers games on hand, if you find your conversations winding down. Don't be surprised if you run into people you know, as this is a hot-spot in town. And if you become a frequent visitor like me, be sure to get your Dream Tea stamp card. Get nine drinks and your tenth will be free. So come and tap into the tapioca goodness at Dream Tea House! Who knows, you might even see me there ;) P.S. If you happen to be at West Edmonton Mall, they also have a smaller location just outside the T&T Supermarket interior entrance.

Dream Tea House has the very best bubble tea to be found in this city if not anywhere! I am completely addicted to the stuff thanks to this little shop and its sister shop in West Ed. Dream Tea makes the good authentic stuff and is bang on every time. They have sweet milky concoctions in every fruity flavor, iced teas, as well as fruit slushies, all with loads of tapioca. They pack their drinks into a tight plastic sealed cup that is spill proof until you pierce it with a straw so they are really easy to carry out. The shop itself has a good amount of seating and is open late (11 most nights, 1 on Saturdays), and has games that you can borrow. This is a great place to come hang out with a group of friends and have a game of Jenga!

Dream tea is one of the older BBT stores in Edmonton. Certainly it was here before a lot of the bigger chains came to town. The space has changed quite a bit over the years and so has their menu. They serve bingsu like desserts as well as more traditional bubble tea. The selection for BBT is wide from fruity mixtures to milk tea they have most of what you may ask for. Overall the quality is quite good and the prices are reasonable. Their mango shaved ice dessert is very tasty and one of my favorites. I often order milk tea bbt without sugar and I have to say it's not the best at dream tea. I actually find Cha time has the best sugar free milk tea. They also have a small selection of board games. Ultimately worth a visit.

It seems like the latest food trend that has been hitting YEG lately is shaved ice dessert! I've seen it pop up in various eateries (Dream Tea, Seorak, Hanjan) these past months. Dessert cafes with a focus on this Asian dessert are slowly appearing around the city as well (BlackBall and soon to be Snowy Village). Shaved ice dessert consists of soft shaved ice with different toppings. The shaved ice is usually covered in milk and its texture is suppose to have a resemblance to snow - cause who wouldn't want to eat dessert snow?! Dream Tea recently started serving Dream Snow Bingsoo which is basically Korean shaved ice dessert. It's only available at their Whyte Ave location. They do have their regular shaved ice as well which has been offered for quite a while. It differs from Snow Bingsoo because the toppings aren't as extravagant. Their regular shaved ice has bubble tea-like toppings such as tapioca, red bean, and lychee jelly. The Snow Bingsoo focuses on fresher toppings such as fruits, cheesecake, and house-made whipped cream. The wait time for their Snow Bingsoo is about 10 to 25 minutes, depending on if it's busy or not. There are currently 7 different flavours offered: Matcha Snow, Mocha Cheesecake, Strawberry, Cotton Candy, Mango, Injeolmi (Korean rice cake), and Oreo. It costs around $8-$9 for one, depending on choice. Each Snow Bingsoo is good for sharing with 2 to 4 people. On my trip, I tried 4 flavours of their Snow Bingsoo: - The Strawberry Snow Bingsoo consists of shaved ice topped with fresh strawberries, thin roasted almond slices, house-made vanilla whipped cream, then drizzled with strawberry syrup and condensed milk. I'd say that Dream Tea doesn't skimp on the toppings when it comes to their Snow Bingsoo! - The Matcha Snow Bingsoo had matcha powder, small mochi pieces, thin roasted almond slices, then it was topped with a scoop of matcha iced cream, drizzled with white chocolate syrup and condensed milk. We asked for extra condensed milk on the side because we felt like it needed a bit more sweetness. - The Mango Snow Bingsoo was the most simplest. It had an abundance of fresh mango pieces, topped with home-made whipped cream and drizzled with condensed milk and mango syrup. The majority of my friends and I agreed that this would be our top Snow Bingsoo. The fresh mango was very sweet but most of the flavour did come from the mangoes. The shaved ice itself lacked a bit of condensed milk. - This was my second time having the Oreo Snow Bingsoo. On my first trip to try the Snow Bingsoo, I had shared this with a friend. This Bingsoo was mainly topped with crushed Oreo pieces, thin almond pieces, whipped cream, then drizzled with chocolate and caramel syrups. I love Oreos so I liked this Snow Bingsoo but during my first trip, my friend found it to be too sweet. The Snow Bingsoo is worth a try if you've never had Asian shaved ice before. In regards to the shaved ice itself - it was a bit bland but the toppings made up for it. A little more condensed milk with the shaved ice would've given it more taste instead of feeling like you are just eating soft ice! Dream Tea has recently had renovations done as well so the inside feels more like a cute cafe in Asia, compared to before.

It…read moreprobably helps that I live nearby and have frequented this part of town practically every day of the combined fifteen years that I have called Edmonton home. The vibrant history of the area is one of Whyte Ave's defining features, each part of the streetscape telling its own story. One such example is the Hulbert block; a three-storey, brick clad, Edwardian commercial building that was built in 1912. On the street level of this building Edmontonians have been enjoying cozy cafe visits at Block 1912 (the cafe's name a tribute to the year that the building was built) since 1992. This cafe is one of the most notable spots on the avenue and their 33 year tenure makes them an iconic and reliable mainstay. Named Favourite Coffee Shop 2023 in the Edmonton Journal, it goes to show that even after this many years people seek out the familiar and comfortable spaces in the city. After all, Block 1912 really does feel a lot like going home. I have spent plenty of time at Block 1912 over the years and I have always been impressed by the immense amount of space that this cafe occupies. Full of time-weathered quirks, there is never any shortage of things to see and discover in this original-exposed-brick hideaway. Deep within the cafe the lighting dims as there are only windows at the very front of the space making natural light sparse. There are different levels of seating and mis-matched chairs. An entire nook is lined with shelves of books. I happen to know that there are secret drawers in various pieces of furniture that are filled with hundreds of notes, left by past patrons. Artists and musicians are encouraged to pitch their portfolios to the manager in order to be featured in the space - whether it be on the walls or to perform during one of the regular live music evenings. Visiting on a Saturday afternoon, I hadn't been to Block 1912 in a while and was interested in exploring everything that their menu has to offer these days. And there's a lot! The counter for ordering is about halfway into the cafe and the glass case full of pastries is an immediate distraction. Did you know that they also make their own gelato?? Of course all sorts of coffee beverages are available but Block 1912 also serves alcohol. There's a full menu of sandwiches, small plates, and comfort food. The staff is friendly and happy to answer any questions. I wanted to order a coffee to stick with the cafe vibe... But I'm not a straight black coffee kind of girl. The Ganache Mocha ($8.75) caught my eye but then I saw the list of 46 (!!) flavoured syrups that there are to choose from! It's almost impossible to decide on only one and after much difficulty I selected Toasted Marshmallow as an add-on to my mocha. Seemed like flavours that would make a lot of sense together! (If you ever want to find out what a "pineberry" latte tastes like go to Block 1912 and let me know what happens.) I settled into a table right at the front of the restaurant so that I could enjoy the small amount of natural light that reaches the interior. Receiving my coffee, I have to say that they got the memo! I was impressed at how much my toasted marshmallow ganache mocha looked exactly the part - there were even mini marshmallows on top! Was it incredibly sweet? Yes. Was there even coffee in this? Who knows! But this warm beverage was what I had been hoping for. Chocolatey with a definite toasted marshmallow flavour, I was delighted that this drink felt like a specialty cafe creation. In the interest of having an entire lunch, I wanted to order something off of the sandwich menu. The Hot Italian Grill seems like the sandwich to get. But the Turkey Apple Brie Sandwich ($16.00) felt seasonally appropriate and I picked that one. A soup or salad is also included, turning this dish into a meal. There were two daily soups available and the Vegetable Beetroot Soup also seemed to match the falltime vibe. I liked that the bread was a lot more interesting than a plain white or brown type. Instead, this bread was studded with what appeared to be cranberries - an ideal match for a turkey sandwich! The brie cheese was gooey and melty. I barely noticed the apples. It was a decently good sandwich but there wasn't a whole lot of filling and I could have easily made something like this at home. I liked the flavour combination though. The soup was warm and flavourful with a fairly fine dice of veggies within. I was expecting a more prominent beet component (maybe not a full borscht but somewhat closer to that) and I'm not sure if I noted the beets at all. If there was any, they were chopped very small and completely mixed in with the other vegetables. I also had to try the Herb Crusted Chicken Pot Pie ($18.00) from the Comfort Food part of the menu. Who doesn't love a soul-warming comfort food on a chilly day? It was even raining! Also served with soup or salad, we decided to try a salad

NUTTEA Canada - Edmonton, AB (corner of Gateway and Whyte Avenue)…read more Back in May, we were walking along the very charming Whyte Avenue and came across some cool artwork at the Old Strathcona Public Washroom (you can see the artwork by clicking on the following link == https://urbanedmonton.ca/.../old-strathcona-public-washroom/ ) . This washroom sits at the southern terminus of the High Level Bridge Street Car ( https://www.edmontonstreetcars.ca/highlevelbridge ) which sadly for us, wasn't going to be in seasonal operation for another couple of weeks yet (May through October). It was upon heading back to our car on Whyte Avenue that out of the corner of my eye I noticed this intriguing stairway leading to some type of shop, hmmm , must explore! Adding even further to the intrigue was the sign .. "Nuttea Nut Mylk Tea". What is this? What could it be? Something vegan, dare I wonder Well, wondered I dared, and I'm glad that I'm the wondering daring type because, ... here we are Turns out this charming little shop has a variety of mylks and teas, the mylks in a wonderful variety of flavors such as Jasmine Green Nut Mylk Tea, Mango Nut Mylk, Avocado Nut Mylk, Matcha with Nut Cream, and a large assortment of other delicious sounding flavors, everything 100% vegan using a variety of 5 different nuts, macadamia, hazelnut, walnut, almond, and cashews. We opted for the Black Sesame Nut Mylk (on the right) and the Earl Grey with Chocolate Nut Cream (on the left). Both were smooth, delicious with a uniquely satisfying and gratifying flavor! If you're in the area, definitely stop by and check them out, with soooo many flavors combinations, you're bound to find something to satisfy your taste buds.

I found out about Nuttea from an event a while ago. Although the store is hidden in the basement,…read morethe place was vibrant when I was there. In terms of tea, their focus is on using nut ingredients, which seems to be healthier than some other bubble tea places. Two signatures they have are Nut Mylk and Nut Cream. The Nut Mylk is a blend of Cashew, Walnut, and Macadamia and the Nut Cream is Cashew, Walnut, Macadamia, Hazelnut, Almond (pieces). I tried their Strawberry Nut Mylk. It was good and felt healthy. Their prices are a bit higher but it makes sense given the ingredients they use, so I'd give them 8/10

It's a bit cramped but it's not bad if the tabes are not full. I managed to bag the table with the plug in but its really cold by the window in winter. Really drafty! I ordered a soup to keep warm, it was red lentil and feta which was tasty. The portion was large and it came with two warm cheese scones. The scones were worth a star alone! I wanted a vanilla latte but they don't do any flavoured coffees. The normal latte was fine but small. It came in a cute glass :) It's a nice open spot for a short meeting, or a quick coffee and catch up. But not somewhere I'd spend a few hours working... not in winter... too chilly.

The girl at the cash till explained that instead of adding water to espresso, it's done by running more water through the espresso coffee grind and therefore making it much stronger than a Americano. So basically their version of a lungo. I enjoyed it but I can't say I'll order it again simply because it tasted like a stronger brew of a dark roast, which I can get at many other coffee shops. The cappuccino was delicious! I almost wanted to go back to ask what the secret was! It's possible that they milk with a higher percentage in fat or cream, which gave it a very nutty flavour. I'll definitely be coming back for a cappuccino the next time I'm in the area, as well as looking forward to trying their affogato and gelato when the weather is warmer.

We got a couple of things: an Almond Croissant, Bulgogi Poutine, a Lavender London Fog with oat milk, and a Peppermint Mocha with oat milk. My Almond Croissant was okay. I know almond croissants are made with leftover pastries, but there was no texture at all. It just fell flat, and lookswise it was physically flat as well lol. It was alright. I wouldn't get the almond croissant again. The Bulgogi Poutine was pretty good. The fries were delicious and crispy. The sauce on top of the fries was slightly sweet, salty, and savory. For me, the bulgogi could've been more flavorful and it didn't taste fresh but I liked the overall dish. Lastly, the Peppermint Mocha was alright. It wasn't spectacular. And I felt the same way about my Lavender London Fog with oat milk. I wish there was more depth in my drink. I think the tea could've been steeped a little longer. Flavor was there in my drink, but it wasn't strong enough. It was slightly disappointing since I've had amazing London Fogs before, and this one just wasn't up to par. Also my drink was slightly warm, not too far off from lukewarm. I feel like the price doesn't exactly correlate with quality for most things here. If we come back here, I'd be willing to try different things and pastries. But I don't think my rating would change much.
