Two and a half weeks later, 2 Aug, I bought back the bowtie and cumberbund set unused, still in it's box. These were scrutinized and a credit issued with 40 day time limit, despite no time limits previously advised. I retuned 43 days later to use my credit and look for additional items. The customer before me returned an item and was issued a full credit to his card. I selected some items and asked to used the credit. I was advised the credit note had expired, which I was aware of. I asked, as it was only 3 days over if there was anything they could do. I had just returned from 2 weeks in US, supporting a family member with cancer. Suddenly there was then a tirade from the man/manager/owner saying that I was manipulating him by mentioning I had been traveling and how did he know if my cancer story was true. I said I could provide passport and medical documents. He dismissed this and continued screaming at me. I tired to relay that originally they had said there was no time limit. More screaming. I mentioned that I witnessed that the customer before me had received a full refund to his credit card. Not listening.. That it was only 3 days over and there had been no mention of time limits of restrictions at time of original purchase. More yelling! I started to walk out and he told me he wasn't finished. But I was!

Customer service later informed me that the trousers were not actually in stock. They offered a replacement of equal value, but nothing was available in my size. I requested a full refund of the order, as paying £5 delivery for a single £25 shirt (when competitors offer free delivery) makes no sense. Instead of giving me the chance to cancel, they dispatched the shirt after discovering they couldn't fulfil the main item. They then refused to refund the delivery charge. When I raised all of this with customer service, they completely ignored the issue and simply said the trousers had been refunded -- with no acknowledgement of the inconvenience, the mistake, or the unfair delivery charge. I'll now be returning the shirt and my entire second order out of principle, and I won't be shopping with Hawes & Curtis again. Reading other customer reviews, I'm also now concerned about product quality. It's disappointing that the company is happy to lose a customer and see over £200 in orders returned rather than refund a £5 delivery cost -- especially when the stock issue was entirely their fault.

One I ordered with 37" sleeves & thought ...fine they'll be a little bit long as I wear a 34/35 sleeve. Well, lo & behold the 37" sleeve is perfect while the 34" sleeve is short. Hawes & Curtis does not allow exchanges. Nor do they offer easy returns as do other English shirt companies. One has to return the shirt with a $10 restocking fee AND pay the shipping - $10 via them or your own shipper of choice. So now I'm stuck with a shirt that doesn't fit because it will cost me half the cost of the shirt to return it to them in England! So while the shirt itself is very nice, I can't purchase from them anymore. They just lost a customer. Back to CT & Brook Traverner where they offer easy exchanges & returns.

(Yes, I have been told that I need to reevaluate my priorities.) Beyond Retro is honestly the best thrift store I've ever walked into. It's tucked away on a side street just a stone's throw away from the bustling Brick Lane Market. My first impression was that the store was extremely well-organized and clean... like so clean that it could've matched the standards of a soulless corporate chain. But the clothing here was nowhere near as sterile as whatever you can find at your dime-a-dozen Zara. Every single item in here was high in quality and had its own vintage, retro character. Hands down, Beyond Retro has the most well curated, eclectic selection of clothing ever. A lot of thrift stores suffer from the musty, outdated '70s closet syndrome, where you'll have to do a godforsaken amount of digging to find that single diamond in the rough. That won't happen at Beyond Retro. I wish I could have had a shopping spree here, but I guess I'll just have to wait for the next plague.

A sprawling vintage emporium with more of an emphasis on clothing than its obvious rival, Absolute Vintage, Beyond Retro sells vintage from the twenties through eighties at very reasonable prices. Its friendly staff are a breath of fresh air; its resident cat adorable; its stock varied and good quality; and its pricing so right on you'd be forgiven for thinking it was run by a philanthropist. Particularly noteworthy is Beyond Retro's premium vintage section which has a beautiful selection of vintage silk chiffon prom dresses and twenties beaded shifts and its astonishing Kimono rail which will not disappoint. As the name suggests, Beyond Retro is more than polyester sixties frippery and faux-vintage rock t-shirts. This place is the real deal and vintage fanatics would be mad to pass it up.

Canada had this chain for over twenty years before all locations shuttered for good in 1999. My go-to location was at Shoppers World on Danforth Avenue at Victoria Park Avenue. I still remember the last item that I bought at this store, which was a blue t-shirt. I visited London in December 2013. Out of all the flagship department stores that I wanted to go to, it was this M&S store on Oxford Street that had priority. I was staying at a hotel in South Kensington. I took the 74 bus to get to this store. I remember someone asking me where the bus stop was as I was heading over to it to take the bus to this store. I'm not sure why folks ask me for directions in a city that is new to me. It happens often. I felt accomplished that I knew something as a tourist! I remember how happy I was when I walked into this store. Hopefully, the floor plan and floors haven't changed since I was last there: - Lower ground floor - foodhall - Ground and first floors - women's clothing - Second floor - men's clothing - Third floor - homeware I don't recall being on the top floor. I could be wrong. I also don't know if the M&S Bank is still at this store. It was cool when I visited it, with comfy couches to relax. I spent some time in the men's clothing section. I bought a green cashmere sweater as a gift that was so soft to the touch. I loved the two floors full of women's clothing. I ended up getting socks that felt ridiculously soft that I had to have them. My spent the majority of my time in the foodhall. I hit the crisps section first. I got a few varieties of crisps: - Roast beef and onion - Roast chicken and garlic butter - Cheddar cheese and onion All of them were amazing. I am salivating thinking about them. So good! I also ended up getting biscuits (cookies). I got shortbread and white chocolate. They were amazing, likely due to the butter. I remember asking a woman at the checkout whether my Discover card was an acceptable payment option. It's also known as a Diner's Club card internationally. My Discover card that I've had since I lived in Minnesota worked here. Yay! I want to go back to this store. It has been renovated since I was last here. I'd like to check out the changes and get more food. (51)
