Tricia was very friendly and navigated me through their diverse assortment, gave me a sample and helped me with my selections. Wow. First off, if you don't wear a mask prepare to be chastised until you find one to put on. I am NOT opposed to wearing a mask, but the sign did not read "mandatory". Then you get down the stairs and the very these woman behind the counter begins the shaming. Lady, just put "MANDATORY" on your door so there is no confusion!!She asks you where you are from and then begins making negative comments about it even though clearly she has been no where. Lloyd Drew's mother, May Cech, was my grandmother's sister(Barbara Cech). When I was in elementary school, our family visited Lloyd and Helen's candy kitchen. Lloyd was my father's cousin(Glenn Enzfelder). We were on our way to a reunion of his dance band at the Roof Garden, Lake Okoboji, and were invited to spend the night at Aunt Helen's house! One of the greatest memories of my childhood was being allowed the next morning to go down into the basement and tour the candy kitchen, and sample the amazing chocolates. I always remembered that visit and those great candies. Aunt Helen is gone, but from what I read, the quality is just as good as it was in the 1950's David Enzfelder. read more

Stopped in while road tripping to Chicago along I-80 -- needed to get a box of milk chocolate caramels as a gift. We've been here a few times and always love it, and we're more than happy to pay their prices for these delicious hand-dipped treats. Got a peanut butter cup and a toffee chocolate for myself -- delicious. Owner let us sample their new salted, dark chocolate caramels. AWESOME. Expensive? Yes. But where else can you get hand-dipped chocolates made with REAL chocolate? Not too many places, especially in Iowa. How often do you pay attention to road side signs when speeding down the interstate? Often we comment on the places that look interesting but usually time Constraints don't allow stops to check out businesses. Today we stopped in Dexter, IA to give Drew's another go. Our last stop was 5-6 years ago. We were not disappointed. We learned that this little Business HS been around for 90 years. We also learned that a swimming party wiped out their homemade ice cream supply yesterday. The freshly made toffee candies (made this morning) did not disappoint. The ice cream making had to wait because of these toffees. The free samples lead us to buy a box of toffees. Yum. Not sure of the exact price of the box. We also got a peppermint party, milk chocolate covered caramel and a dark chocolate and cherry individual candies. They were all yummy and fresh. Our total was $18 and some change. When you get to Dexter, drive straight through to the Drew's Chocolates sign almost at the edge of town. This little business is down the stairs on the left side of the house. It's a tiny little shop but the candy is amazing. Parking is limited to a half circle gravel drive in front of the house. We hope to get back soon for some of their sweet treats. read more

The Chocolate store is a treasure in this small town. There is good signage on the interstate and leading in to town, and the location is easy to find on the west end of Dexter. The store is in the basement, down some stairs - clearly marked. It is very small inside but also very cozy. We enjoyed looking at the different options that were available. Chocolates are boxed by type, or you can also pick up a pre-packaged assortment box (small or large). you can also build your own box with whatever chocolates you wish. We purchased a large assortment box that contained one of almost everything. It has been fantastic to try each piece and they are definitely a treat. This will be my new spot for getting special, local gifts. read more

When I was a small child and traveling from Des Moines too my Grandparents farm in southern Iowa it was a very special treat to stop at Drew's. I remember as if it were yesterday. Going down the stairs, staring into the glass candy case and picking out our favorites. I am now 75 years old and this candy remains the BEST I have ever eaten, and I've eaten ALOT of chocolate in 75 years! I believe only one thing has changed...the house used to be green. I live in Des Moines and we have several places to get chocolates, including Chocolaterie Stam and Chocolate Storybook. I will still go out of my way for Drew's Chocolates, because in my opinion they taste the best. The orange creams, coconut creams, and sea salt caramels are my favorites. Every holiday, my mom from NW Iowa orders chocolates to give out as gifts at the independent senior community she manages, and when my sister visits from Tucson, AZ, she insists on getting chocolate covered chips from Drews. When traveling from Des Moines to Omaha, we saw a sign for Drew's Chocolates off the next exit. We decided to veer off and check it out. It is a super cute little house with the chocolate shop on the lower level. We were greeted by a really friendly man, extravagant Valentines Day displays, and a lot of yummy looking chocolates! The man behind the counter gave us some samples and told us about all the different products. He then also told us a little bit about the history of the shop which was really cool to learn. I picked out eight different chocolates from the case (and let me tell you-it was hard to pick only eight!), some chocolate espresso beans, and a solid chocolate bar. When he told us the total I was surprised at how fairly priced they were! The man then told us more about their Valentines specials and that they do homemade ice cream in the summer! We will definitely be making the short drive from Des Moines again to get these tasty, delectable chocolates! read more

Ive never had a bad experience at drews. Im not the biggest fan of sweets and candies but the chocolates here amazing. I would recommend them to anyone. The price is not outrageous for the amount and the quality you get. I love the sea salt caramels, peanut clusters, and peanut butter cups. Definitely recommend drews chocolates. read more

There is no chocolate like Drew's Chocolates. Seriously. The sea salt caramels are to die for! My mother and I stopped and got a box and Jason, the owner, let us sample many different kinds and then helped us choose which flavors to get. They were all wonderful. My favorite thing that they make is chocolate covered potato chips. I think you have to special order them, but I always do when I am going to be in the state because they are so hard to find. I have tired them at other places here, like Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, and they are not on the same level at all. Maybe it's because they are hand dipped and in small batches. Worth every calorie. And as a bonus, they ship! This can be a little dangerous, but a great idea for those of us who live far, far away. It's a good thing that I moved across the country or I would be a lot fatter from eating these yummy treats all the time! 5 stars and worth the drive from Des Moines for sure! read more

A friend raved about this place a couple decades ago so I thought I would check it out while in the neighborhood. Easy to find, nice presentation in the basement of a residence. Display case is full of many interesting examples, but when you ask for items the attendant fills your order from an area in the rear. The creams on display were almost the size of a mounds bar, but upon opening the box (after leaving) one finds the products mere fractions of the display case examples. IE, raspberry cream was about the size of a jelly bean covered with chocolate, the caschew cluster ? One nut covered with chocolate, ditto with peanut. Pass on the peanut butter cup. Dark chocolate with sea salt? About the size of a postage stamp and about 1/4 inch thick. Two small boxes with a few ounces of what most people would consider scraps for nearly thirty bucks. Is the chocolate good? Certainly, but the portions are a rip and make no sense in relation to the cost of the materials involved. read more
