Exceptionally beautiful and extremely detailed Gilded Age mansion. I have only seen Low Art tiles at antique stores, so to see it in an actual home is special. Our tour guide Abby* was knowledgeable and sweet. The tour lasted about an hour and you were free to ask her more questions after the tour. If you decide not to go with a tour guide, you can opt for an audio guide. There are information stands throughout the home, however, I recommend using some tour aid to further your knowledge of the home's history. The pictures do not due it justice! The Driehaus Museum is a wonder of architectural beauty! After our visit to the Field Museum, we wanted to find something a little more low key and less crowded. When you enter the Driehaus Museum, you will drop your jaw in awe. The marble entrance hall is impressive with a large staircase positioned in the middle. The house has such a rich history of being owned by a famous banker in the Gilded era. He built the house for $450K which would be equivalent to $180M today! They have a great bag check and coat check and all the staff are extremely nice. Admission is $20/adult. Pay the extra $5 for the guided tour, you will not regret it! Our guide took our small group to the reception room where there are beautiful tiles up to the ceiling and a magnificent fireplace. The architecture and designs became more impressive as you visit the studies where Tiffany stained glass and lamps are the norm. Some of the art in the museum is extremely classical with cherub faced women and pretty men in fantastic paintings. It's interesting to learn the history behind the 2 families who owned the house and how much love Driehaus put into restoring it. The bedrooms and ballrooms were tastefully done and blend art from different cultures. They have a rotating art collection and we had a history of seating (different chairs) when we were there. If you are in the Chicago area, don't miss this worthwhile mansion-museum for all you art and architecture lovers. read more

This museum isn't for everyone, but if you like old houses rich with history like me, Richard Driehaus Museum is for you! Unlike Hearst Castle, they don't charge an arm and a leg for admission. They offer discounted admission to students and seniors so pricing isn't too bad (audio tour is extra though). The guides, located on each floor, are friendly but unobtrusive. They even offered to help me take a solo pic on the glamorous staircase. Pro tip: You can ask the guides about the dumbwaiter and old servants' quarters and they might be able to take you to peek into the now admin offices. I like that they have rotating exhibitions so it's extra bang for your buck. I was there when they were showcasing the French posters, and it was a neat treat learning more about this art form from the Belle Époque period. 4.5 read more

Located on Erie Street, this magnificent mansion was preserved as a time capsule of Tiffany treasures and antiquities. Most of the appointments and furniture were donated by the Driehaus family. At the moment, in addition to the regular antiquities, there is a beautiful stained glass exhibit. It is a "must see" on how well stained glass can be a work of art. The Driehaus Museum (a restored Nickerson Mansion) is a Gilded Age masterpiece. Built in 1883 and restored in 2003-2008, the mansion is stunning. I was visiting Chicago with some people who aren't as in to architecture and history and historic homes as I am and we didn't have a lot of time before our next stop, so we didn't do the guided tour. I regret that. Because as beautiful as the home is, I wanted to know a lot more than what was on the signs in each room. On my next trip to Chicago, I'd like to go back and do the guided tour, because the self-guided tour is quite limiting. If you love Gilded Age architecture or design, you're sure to be impressed! I lived in Chicago for years and continue to visit every year, but I just checked this museum out for the first time. My sister and I got student discounts which helped, and luckily we didn't even need to show our actual ID to get the discount, just had to say our school. I liked how they had exhibits there, something else to enjoy! The house is beautiful and I loved learning about the history behind it. My family decided to do the self-guided tour. I think that was the better choice for us because from what we saw the guided tour looked long and like it involved a lot of standing in the same spot for a long time. Wow this house is stunning. It has been restored to the gilded era of beauty. Simply breathtaking and has some of the most beautiful features I have ever seen. Richard Driehaus bought the house as established it as a non profit. His office is across the street and the street is named after him. He has an exquisite Tiffany lamp collection. The smoking room was breathtaking with turquoise tiles lining the walls. While this house is not the largest it is in immaculate condition. read more

We stopped by yesterday and were very impressed with the house but also the staff! I do suggest the 1-hour guided tour to get the most out of it. Beautifully restored mansion from the 1880's - a true Chicago treasure! We took the guided tour and learned much about the history, architecture, design, and furnishings of the house. It was quite fascinating. I was quite taken by the attention to detail in the wood carvings, silk wall coverings, parquet flooring, and ceilings. The Tiffany lamp collection alone is worth the cost of admission. I delighted to also see the temporary exhibit showcasing chairs from around the world. They had a chair designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (for the Johnson Wax Building), and another chair fashioned by Frank Gehry! They also have a lovely gift shop with quality items at a range of price points. I highly recommend a visit, and do splurge ($5) for the hour-long tour too! HELPFUL TIP: The name "Driehaus" is pronounced so that it rhymes with "treehouse." read more

Visited during Open House Chicago and I definitely want to return. I had been wanting to stop in for a while but it always seemed like a somewhat inconvenient spot to stop in. However, bright and early, we stopped in. First of all, we had a special request upon arriving and the team working there couldn't be nicer. They were very very accommodating and got us helped and where we needed to be swiftly and with a smile. Upon entering, we were in awe of the lovely home, furnishings, Tiffany lamps, stained glass skylights, etc. We only visited the first floor, but it was a sight to behold. If you love old homes, this is worth a visit. There is period furniture, and some of the rooms have original pieces from the original homeowners. How this building was used as an office in between being a residence and now without getting ruined is beyond me. It is lovely and don't forget to see the skylight while you're visiting. Not Tiffany, but just as beautiful, if not more than some Tiffany windows. Not sure how busy this is during a non-Open House Chicago week, but I assume it's a sleepier museum than say the Art Institute, but it's a perfect stop off in the city and definitely worth it to see a gorgeous old home preserved beautifully. read more

They are part of the Roam system so if you have a membership from another city they will accept it for free admission. Filled with history and also a rotating featured artist. While walking the streets of Chicago, we stumbled upon the Driehaus Museum. This looks like a normal BIG house, but it's full of history and relics that will shock you. This 3 story (well 4 if you count the basement) hits you as soon as you walk in the doors. The marble entry staircase is divine, draped in red carpet . As you enter the house you are greeted by staff members that lead you to the back of the house aka the office for your tickets (the old kitchen). Prices are a little steep, but they have plenty of discounts to help you out. They also have a staff member on each floor to help with any questions, if you don't make the tour. We took the self guided tour, and everything is labeled well with signs and even pictures with dates and history. Full of The gilded age décor, impressive collection of Tiffany lamps, amazing artwork and statues fill this house up. They also offer rotating exhibits throughout the house. On my visit, it was the history of chairs. Sounds strange at first, but I was surprised at how much I loved this exhibit! ***they have a few chairs for your pleasure on the 3rd floor for you to sit in by the gift shop. All-in-all, If you are walking along State and Erie, take the time to visit this house. You will be impressed for sure, and get a little history lesson at the same time. Located in the Nickerson Mansion, this museum is one of the most underrated gems in the city. It is half awesome gilded age mansion, half art gallery. The price is a bit steep at $20 ($5 extra for a guided tour or audio), but it is $10 for kids or students. But it is definitely worth it. We needed about 1.5 hrs to explore it all, and we loved every second. During our visit, they featured a French poster exhibit, where we toured the features of the house on the first floor, then ventured upstairs to check out the posters. The guide was extremely knowledgeable about both subjects and really enhanced our enjoyment of the experience. No matter what art is being featured, the house is reason enough to take a tour. It is what they called a "show mansion," in which each room is a unique work of art unto itself, intended to show off to wealthy visitors. The rooms are filled with intricate woodwork, one memorable room has deep aqua tiles on the walls, and the real showstopper is a gallery featuring a spectacular stained glass dome. Bonus points for the photo op on tbe top floor, where they set out some old school clothing, including large fancy hats. Great stuff. read more

(Driehaus has a vast collection!) In addition, the property also hosts ongoing special exhibits, "L'Affichomania"/ "The Passion for French Posters" is on display through January 7, 2018. "Le Chat Noir" ring a bell? It's amazing to not only see works that you recall but to discover them in this historic home of the same era is quite the delight. It's quite definitely a "Museum within a Museum" since the home itself is an attraction, but the admission fee ($20 at the time of this writing) covers also your entrance to view the ongoing installment. On a cold winter day I had lunch plans in the area and was looking for an additional activity and happened upon the Driehaus. Originally I wasn't sure what to expect or if we would even add it to our day but so glad we did. This place is amazing and I had no idea it even existed a few hours before our visit. Defiantly spring for the tour as this place has so much detail and our guide was a wealth of knowledge. The tour is an hour and moves along at a nice pace so you aren't falling asleep like some tours. Lol. Currently they have a special exhibit of Tiffany running thru mid March and it's incredible. I was amazed how close you are able to get to the pieces which was a treat to be able to see the detailed craftsmanship of the Tiffany glass. The museum always has a floor dedicated to rotating exhibits so it's not only an estate it's also a gallery. The history of this place from its origins of a private home, to office space to its restoration are all part of its intrigue. I will defiantly be recommending this tour not only here to my yelpers but to friends when they visit. It's quite outstanding. read more

My friend and I popped in bc he is a chicago native that has never been. We both enjoyed it! 1st level has all the rooms for entertainment you would be familiar with in Downton Abbey. This Home is a Work of Art!! I came here with a friend and we spent over three and a half hours exploring, admiring, and learning everything we could about this place and life during the Gilded Age. This museum houses many elaborate pieces, including glassworks by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Lincrusta-Walton wall coverings, numerous hand-painted panels on the ceilings, and sculptures/paintings exclusive to the practicality and intent of every room. -- FIRST FLOOR The Smoking Room: where the men would retire after dinner for a smoke and some conversation. The Reception Room: where guests would wait be greeted by the family. The Dining Room: where meals were eaten. The Front Parlor: the formal entertaining room for guests. The Drawing Room: where the women would withdraw for tea and conversation after dinner. The Library: where catching up on the latest periodical or novel can happen in peace. The Gallery: this room housed a lot of artwork purchased by the Nickersons. SECOND FLOOR Adelaide Nickerson's Bedroom: this room houses works by Alphonse Mucha. Mrs. Nickerson's Bedroom: this room showcases works by Jules Chéret. The Sitting Room: this was the private space of Mrs. Nickerson where she could do whatever she wanted without being disturbed. This room displays the work of Eugène Grasset. Mr. Nickerson's Bedroom: this room features works by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlein. Roland Nickerson's Bedroom: this room illustrates the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. THIRD FLOOR The Sewing Room: another parlor for gathering, it is now a room filled with photographs of the families and lifestyle photos of the home. The Ballroom: the center of the hall, where formal dances and events were held. --- This museum is full of treasures from the private collection of Richard H. Driehaus including a seasonal change of exhibits like the current "L'Affichomania: The Passion for French Posters". These larger than life posters and objects are brilliantly vivid and instantly transported me to 1890's Chicago and 1890's Paris. We missed the guided tour this time around, so will be back to attend the 'Best of Both: Combination Tour' and get the inside scoop another time. Gorgeous house and details from the Gilded Age. Staff was very nice and informative - chiming in at appropriate times when myself and others in the group were questioning certain things amongst ourselves. Took about 2 hours to do a self-guided tour the house and see the Tiffany stained glass exhibit. They also offer guided tours as well as audio tours for a small fee. There were blurbs for every room and for many of the artifacts on display. I especially liked the samples of the tile that guests could touch and feel. read more

Not to be ageist, but halfway through my self-guided tour of the Driehaus Museum I whispered to my friend "we're the youngest ones here... by a lot". When you get to be my age, that's saying something. What it's saying I'll leave for the anthropologists to decipher but on a personal level I think my reaction to it had less to do with my age and more to do with my preferences. In a town which houses the Art Institute and the Museum of Contemporary Art I'll probably always prefer those over this. That said, "this" is beautiful. The Driehaus Museum is an immaculately preserved and restored mansion from the Gilded Age, replete with splendid period furnishings. The house is gorgeous, each room is impressive. When entering, a docent implores you to join a guided tour (available only at scheduled times) but allows you to guide yourself right now if you so choose. I opted to guide myself through the rooms and found everything I needed to know by reading the placards in each room. Additionally, since there are many tours walking through the mansion/museum, it's possible to listen in at any time, possibly picking up tidbits of additional information. The admission price ($20; even more if you want a guided tour) seemed a bit steep but discounts are offered for students and seniors. The Driehaus Museum is a fine and beautiful piece of period architecture, possibly one of the loveliest out there in Chicago. If you have an hour or two to spare it's a great way to fill that time. I can't imagine a return visit for any reason (despite the fact that they have rotating art exhibits in some of the rooms) but if you've never seen it then by all means you should, whatever your age. read more

I visited the Driehaus Museum on a Friday morning. It is a gilded age mansion turned museum. Staff in the foyer escorted me back to the ticket counter. Admission was $20, and I paid $5 extra for the self guided audio tour. You are able to check a large purse or backpack with the ticket counter folks, and there is also a coat room. The museum itself is beautiful. The house is constructed of a wide variety of materials, including a stained glass ceiling dome, carved wood wall panels, mantle pieces, and built-in furniture, and ceramic tile walls. Very grand. The audio tour was worth it, to get more details than what's listed on the placards in each room. There is also an option to go on a 60-minute guided tour, but I did not do this. The upper levels have an exhibition of French poster art currently, featuring pieces by Toulouse-Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha, and others. I enjoyed learning more about these via the audio guide as well. Museum docents were also available to answer questions and chat. If you're looking for a museum that can be explored in a short amount of time but still inspires awe at its magnificence, check out the Driehaus museum. It is just three levels and took me 90 minutes to walk through, listening to a handful of audio guide selections in each room. It was not very crowded either. read more

Between the 17 different types of marble, stained glass skylights, exquisite furniture and meticulous renovation, this is one of the finest examples of gilded age urban living I've ever seen. Went here to see the Downton Abbey exhibit and had a lovely experience. The staff was friendly and helpful and the building is beautiful. The exhibit was well done and the audio tour was paced well (I usually hate audio tours, but this one was great). They turned their ballroom space into a high tea room and it was amazing - beautiful and delicious service complete with champagne, tea sandwiches, and the like. The special Downton Abbey exhibit gift shop was perfectly curated as well. read more

This is an awesome museum that's tucked away in River North! It's a mansion from the gilded age and features beautiful works of art, pieces of furniture, and interior architecture. There is a ton of history packed into this place and I loved learning about each room and seeing how ornate it was for that time period. I 100% suggest getting an audio guide because it is much more engaging than the visual boards. I actually listened to the narration designed for children, which I loved because they made each room exciting and pointed out tiny details I would not have noticed otherwise. They also spoke from a variety of perspectives, such as a maid, a server, etc. The second and third floors feature various art exhibits, but the first floor is where the history shines. read more

I'm not typically a museum type, (too boring for me zzz zzz zzz) but I love architecture and this was an affordable way to take a peek into old Chicago that will not allow you to nod off or require a full day commitment. The guides and museum staff were quick to answer questions and were available throughout all 3 floors. There were so many beautiful and breathtaking things to look at.... The furniture, the art, the architecture itself was all simply amazing. I particularly enjoyed all of the jewelry exhibits and descriptions in an easy-to-follow handbook. I don't give out many five star reviews, but this is honestly one of the best museums I've been to in a while. It's a small, fully restored gilded era home -- right off the magnificent mile, in what was once a snooty residential neighborhood. Thanks to a combination of good luck and preservation minded forethought, it's still more or less in it's original condition, complete with over the top wall hangings, carved and inlaid wood everywhere, beautiful tile work, and some of the original furniture. I'm not a big expert on interior design... or history... but I was floored. It's like an american, urban version of Downton Abbey (same time period). The other cool part if the collection of Tiffany glass. I'm not a huge Tiffany fan (I find it a little overdone), but if you are, the collection they have is amazing. Plenty of obligatory lamps, but also several (at least 5?) full windows, various vases and desktop accessories, and several important pieces from the Chicago World's Fair. My favorite part was the downstairs bathroom (right by where you buy your tickets). I know this sounds crazy, but it's a fully restored period bathroom, featuring a Crapper toilet! When I went in, I wasn't sure if it was really a working bathroom -- I had to ask, and I'm sure I looked pretty silly. And I'm sure I sound pretty ridiculous now. But, it's pretty awesome: old fashioned authentic crapper toilet with an overhead tank and the chain pull flush mechanism. I thought it was pretty neat. I'm just weird like that. I went on a guided tour, which was definitely worth the extra $5. Admission isn't cheap, but it's worth it. The house has been beautifully preserved and is worth a visit. Tip: they offer parking validation for the ROW self park a few blocks away at 50 E Ohio. You can park there for up to 18 hours for $14 with validation (that's $25 off the standard rate). When you purchase your admission tickets, just show them the parking receipt and they will give you a sticker so you can get the discounted rate. My husband and I drove to Chicago for the day and left our car in the self park the whole time -- we visited the museum and then went out to dinner and wandered around, and the validation covered the whole time :) read more

My wife and I were looking for something different to do while visiting downtown Chicago and discovered this place doing a Yelp search. What a gem this museum is. This is a fully restored home from the Gilded Age that houses a private Tiffany glass collection. We splurged and purchased the guided tour and it was worth it. The tour guide was very informative and friendly. The day we visited, the tour also included a jewelry collection from the same era, and it was interesting, but the highlight for me was the home. I love old houses and marvel at the architecture and craftsmanship that goes into building these places. They do allow photos, but no flash photography and NO touching anything. I was scolded for touching the marble wall in the entryway. If you haven't visited yet, and like historical homes, I highly recommend visiting. read more

We went here after my wife found this place and told me about it. Im a fan of the Guilded Age, so I was happy to come see this museum. The house is in downtown Chicago, about 2 blocks west of Michigan Avenue, so it has a good location and is easy to get to (at least if you're downtown). They insisted we check our bags (weird) when we went to buy tickets. I forget how much admission is, but I found it expensive. Fortunately, being an educator, I was able to get a discount on tickets which made the price reasonable. We started out on the first floor. It was beautiful! The house was everything I hoped it would be. I have toured Gilded Age mansions in other cities, and this was the best. Everything was beautifully decorated, the place dripped of opulence, and they had even decorated for Christmas, which was nice. I loved it! Then we went to the second floor. It wasn't nearly as nice or beautifully decorated. It was barely even furnished at all! Most the the rooms upstairs had exhibits on comics from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Since many of them commented on current affairs, I found they did not make much sense to a 21st Century audience. In all, I'd say I got maybe 60% of the comics. The third floor was more of the same. There were a few interesting things, like J.P. Morgan's cane and a gift shop, but mostly it was just comics and rooms that were nothing at all like the rooms on the first floor. So in all, I loved the first floor but the other two floors were just average and certainly not worth the money. Because of the first floor though, I'd say its worth visiting, at least if you can get a discount on tickets. read more

Its important that I mention that this place is not for everyone. If you are not thrilled by Victorian decoration and architecture, then move along. Ive been to museums like this in other cities. This stands out because of its sheer beauty. The staircase has gorgeous red carpet on top of white marble with these awesome carved lions on the end posts. The stained glass dome in the library is splendid. My favorite room had to be the obsidian black room, right before the library on the first floor. They keep the lighting low and yellow, for maximum aesthetic and a romantic glow. On one of floors, they have an endless loop of Chopin playing as background music. To me, it made the experience even better. Also, do yourself a favor and use the restroom. Even if you dont have to go, check out the old school pull chain toilet they have. I will admit the museum is a little pricier than expected, but Im a sucker for this kind of interior design. I really wished the previous owners left the taxidermy animal heads on the wall. read more

It is literally like being transported back in time to when the place was first built. There are excellent interpretive signs, and an audio tour. Such a pretty home to tour and the stories that came along with the tour were so entertaining. The Tiffany pieces were so pretty. All of the pieces in the home were interesting. The details in the wood were amazing. It was just nice to see how people lived all of those years ago. Defintiely something different to do on a free afternoon downtown. read more
