For a long time Steve and I have been wanting to go to the Westport Maritime Museum but never did due to always having the dogs with us but finally we made it here quite recently. The admission is $5 and that gives you the ability to explore the upstairs and downstairs of the main museum building, an adjacent building where a lighthouse lens is located and two other structures with large windows with whale bones housed inside them along with some other mammal bones. The cost of admission is totally worth with what you get to see and for me the main highlight was the lighthouse lens as I'm sure it was for a lot of visitors. Lots of clutter picked up from the ocean waters and used as artifacts which is fascinating (because a lot of this stuff came from various parts of Asia) and disturbing at the same time. Lots of other intriguing content to look at as well and a very nice gift shop. Great way to spend a bit of time while exploring the marina. I don't feel like you'd spend an enormous amount of time here. Maybe an hour to an hour and a half but it depends on your pacing but no need to wipe out a whole afternoon to fit this museum in.

Well we finally decided to stop and visit and we were glad we did. It was one of those "why have we never done this before?" kinda moments. It's not big by any stretch, though we were told that they would be expanding in the near future. Will definitely come back once they have. There is no entrance fee, only a sign in book and request for a donation, but it's only a request...that you should definitely donate to. Anyways despite the size, there is much to explore and loads of history about the area that you might or might not have known. It's also a beach comber's haven, the collection of stuff found on the local beaches is super fascinating! The volunteer working there was very knowledgeable and she was able to answer any questions or provide information about anything that was on display or the history of the area. One of the more interesting things to me was the debris that washed up all the way from Japan during the tsunami over a decade ago. They also provide a little gift shop area to bring home any keep sakes or mementos of your visit. So the next time you are on the 109 between Moclips and Pacific Beach and you spot the Museum of the North Beach, stop in and look around. You might even learn something you did not know.

It was super duper neat to have workers on standby to ask questions even though I was running the self-guided tour. I would allot 1 to 2 hours while you are here to see each mini exhibit and read the descriptions to each piece. Super duper neat stuff that focused more so on Kurt Cobain during his adolescence, which I liked. My favorite part was the video playing of the Final version vs director's cut of the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" music video. I did not know that the history of the music video ran that deep!

I was 16 when Nirvana made it big and wil always feel a connection with the band and the place they originated from for several reasons i can't get into now. This was the first year we were able to visit the museum since it opened a year ago. Last time I was there there was just a mural but now it was a full fleshed museum full of decent Kurt related artifacts and a great giftshop for grunge fans.(left with several books and tshirts based on vintage band tshirts Kurt wore). The artifacts were great but the experience wouldn't be half as amazing without the very insightfull tour guide. i have read 15 grunge books, 4 nirvana books, and it was stil full of inside knowledge I had never heard about. On top of that it was so amazing to hear the owners and people work there talk about their common pasion for everything grunge and Kurt Cobain. Talking to them really lifted to whole experience and I couldn't have enjoyed it more. Looking forward to going back next year to see what they added and do the tour of the Cobains resedence. My friend referred me here when my beloved furchild, Howard James, passed away earlier this year. So on the way to the ocean we swung in here. I was prepared with some ashes in hand and was warmly welcomed by the owners. I was ugly crying and struggling to describe what I was looking for, but they were compassionate and helpful and let me have all the time I needed to make some decisions while simultaneously talking about how amazing Howie was. They helped me pick out the perfect pieces to create to honor him - I ended up with two glass votives and a sleeping glass cat. I got to choose the colors and sizes and styles. And they are beautiful. Honestly, the glass I received a couple weeks later was beyond my expectations. Little pieces of art that bring me joy and warmth whenever I see them or light a candle within. I couldn't have thought of a better way to keep his spirit alive than this, and I am so grateful for Opal Art Glass for taking the time to create something so perfect and meaningful to me. Now that said - they do ALL SORTS of other glass creations and art too (ornaments, bowls, yard art, figurines, pendants, etc) and they are all beautiful and unique and the prices are fair. Truly a wonderful place to stop in for some gifts or art if you're around. What sets these guys a part from all the rest is they care - they care about their customers and care about the quality they deliver. Fast forward to Grayland on the West Coast...The Cranberry Harvest Festival celebrates the importance of cranberries to the South Beach area of WA state. While at the festival, you can sign-up inside the Grayland Community Hall for bus tours of Grayland cranberry bogs to watch the harvest in action and learn even more about the humble fruit. At the festival, you'll find various products made with cranberries.
