This is my first - and probably only - Yelp review. That's how important I feel it is to share my experience with Drive Rite Academy. For context, I previously had a driver's license in another state, but as a busy, hustling New York pedestrian these past few years, I somehow managed to let it expire (which I will NEVER EVER do again, btw). Then, recently, due to an illness in my family, I resolved to get my license again so I could be of greater help and support. I managed to get it done within a week, and I have Drive Rite Academy in great part to thank for that. OK. So in New York City, unless you happen to live with parents who own a car, we are all kind of up-a-creek-without-a-paddle when it comes to practicing driving. Without a license, you cannot (A) own, or (B) rent a car. While you could borrow one from a friend - I mean, eek. What if something were to go wrong? (And many, many things can go wrong; driving in New York City is its own beast!) That's how I landed at Drive Rite Academy's doorstep. In addition to doing their 5-hour Pre-Licensing Course some weeks prior (Dave does a great job, by the way, it's not easy to make any subject interesting for a stretch that long!) I also did their Super Rush Road Test Service, 4 brush-up lessons, and their Road Test & Car Service. The reason I had to complete all of the driving - brush-ups and road test - within the space of a week, was that between work, travel, family and life commitments this Spring, I only had one week on my calendar where it would conceivably be possible. And this is where Drive Rite's Customer Service Team really shined (hi, Robert, thank you again for everything!). They were able to help me implement a fairly ambitious plan on an extremely tight turnaround: Through Drive Rite's Super Rush Road Test Service, the team was able to schedule a road test appointment for me within my one-week window - set for a Friday. Then, I worked with Robert to schedule 4 lessons for the days in the run-up to the road test, one each day from Mon-Thurs. Each day I hauled it from Manhattan to Drive Rite Prospect Heights to work with Sue and Avery, and brushed up on parallel parking, 3-point turns, and general cruising. (Something to note for folks like me, who have already had a license in the past: "being a good driver" does not automatically equate "being able to pass a NYC road test." The former is about being able to perform in a variety of circumstances; the latter is about being able to perform with exacting precision in a compressed period of time. The NYC road test is only 5-10 minutes, which might sound like a breeze, but the margin for error therefore is very, very slim. So even if you're a NASCAR-grade driver, I'm reasonably sure that a couple of refresher lessons will still prove helpful, especially if you don't have easy access to a car to practice.) Sue and Avery were both awesome in different ways. Sue was very relaxed, and vocalized corrections as necessary. Her selective feedback helped raise my awareness to many things I had previously learned through driving experience, but forgot that I knew. Avery (AVERY JONES, to be specific!) was extremely rigorous in breaking down the mechanics of driving, and assigned a number of lighthearted catch-phrases ("ABC: Always be curious!") that were easy to remember and recall. Avery also taught me how to parallel park in a scalable manner that could be applied to almost any car or space, so I learned a host of new things, as well. Both instructors provided valuable insights about what I could expect from both the road test itself, and the site where the test was set to take place. On the day of the actual test, a lovely lady named Mrs. Welch served as my escort. While transporting me to the Red Hook Road Test site, she provided me with a few last-minute but important DOs and DON'Ts of the road test, answered a few outstanding questions I had, and was overall a very soothing presence. I was definitely a little nervous after investing so much time and energy in the process, and knew it would all culminate in a few brief Friday moments! Indeed, they were brief, they were intense - and they were enough. I passed. :) Getting a driver's license in New York City is considerably harder than it might initially seem. Your road test will (likely) be in a car you've never driven before, in a neighborhood you (very likely) don't know, and you only have 5-10 minutes to prove that you can be solid and stable, both mechanically and emotionally. I'm really glad I did it, and I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to - especially not on such a tight timeline - without the support of Drive Rite Academy. They are a really great and caring team of people, and I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with them! read more

Okay so this is going to be a long one, but I have so many good things to say and I wanted to provide as much detail as possible so you know what you're getting into! For you skimmers, the bottom line is that Drive Rite proved to be accommodating, helpful and equipped with fabulous instructors. It was a lot of money for me to spend, but I got my money's worth and more! A little background on me, I had my permit for close to five years before I decided to take lessons. Having been in an accident as a kid, I was a nervous driver and wanted to be sure that I got lessons from people who I'd actually learn from and feel comfortable with. I traveled the 1.5 hours on the subway from Queens to Drive Rite because they were most highly reviewed driving school I could find online and they were not wrong! I signed up for the 10-course package that included the 5 hour course and the car for the test day. My instructors were Ron, Kelly and Emmanuel. Emmanuel was who I had my first few lessons with and he really put me at ease. He had a "go for it" attitude that made me feel more confident in my driving. I probably had the most lessons with Kelly and she was great! She didn't hesitate to correct things I wouldn't have noticed I was doing incorrectly and was really great about giving good feedback! She also didn't let me feel insecure about things I shouldn't have worried about because no one can drive 100% perfectly! Finally, I also had Ron for a double lesson. I believe he is the most experienced instructor and he was amazing! I had him later in the driving lessons and I think it was a good way to fine tune my skills before the test. His method of teaching is to make you do things over and over until you get it right which really worked for me! On the test day, I definitely thought back to his little tips and tricks! As you can tell, I had a variety of instructors from the Dean Street location and they were all fabulous! I've already recommended this school to many of my other city kid friends who want to drive! My 5-hour course was taught by Ricky and I found him really entertaining. The 5 hours flew by (how??) and it was much more pleasant than everyone had told me. He keeps things interactive! Drive Rite is also exceptionally accommodating. In addition to having a wide range of times during which you can take lessons, my permit was set to expire in less than a month and I hadn't realized you can't actually renew your permit and have to reapply (silly me!). I had to get back to school out of state and didn't have time to wait the two weeks to get the permit and then schedule a road test. I called the office and they were really helpful about getting all my lessons in before the expiration date AND working with me to get a test date (I paid the rush fee to get it within 3 weeks). The one negative thing I have to say is that you have to be more persistent when you're trying to get s rush test date. This may have been only my experience, but when I called the woman failed to note in my file when my permit was going to expire and I got a test date after that. I ended up recalling and they put me back on the list, but I heard of other people getting test dates before I did even though they had requested much longer after me. Luckily, Kelly (aka the most amazing person who went the extra mile) had a student who had a test date they didn't feel comfortable with and was willing to switch with me. She emailed the office and the next day, I had a test date for the following day! With little time to mentally prepare, I was so surprised when I passed on the first try (two days before my permit was set to expire)!! I was so nervous but the instructor (Issa, who I hadn't met before) gave me lots of tips pertaining to my specific test site and answered questions. THANK YOU THANK YOU DRIVE RITE!! read more

I completed 13 lessons and paid over $900 to prepare for my road test. What Drive Rite delivered was negligence, not instruction. The day before my test, my regular instructor Neil was replaced without notice by a new instructor, Sujata, who arrived with zero knowledge of my progress -- she asked if I had ever driven before. She spent the first 15 minutes on her phone, covered basics I learned months ago, and introduced techniques the night before my road test that directly contradicted everything Neil had taught me. The stress triggered a full panic attack and I had to exit the vehicle. When a passerby stopped to check on me, Sujata told them "she's fine" and did nothing. I called Drive Rite that same day and explicitly told them: if Sujata was my instructor on test day, I would fail. They kept her assigned anyway. I failed my road test. The examiner told me my nerves got the best of me -- which is a direct consequence of being destabilized by an unprepared instructor the night before. After the test, Sujata drove away while I was still exiting the vehicle -- leaving me stranded in traffic. No concern for my safety whatsoever. When I called to escalate, the representative told me to calm down. I later discovered through the chargeback process that Drive Rite's own internal notes from one week before my test rated my chances of passing as "50/50" -- information they never shared with me. I also discovered they had flagged my anxiety disorder internally as a behavioral concern while making zero accommodations for it. These notes were withheld from me as a paying customer and only surfaced when Drive Rite submitted them to dispute my refund request. Their chargeback response also repeatedly misspelled my last name and referenced an instructor named "Jada" -- a name that does not correspond to anyone I was ever assigned. This is the level of care they apply to official documentation. Drive Rite took my money, withheld critical information about my own readiness, ignored a direct warning that the instructor substitution would cause me to fail, and left me stranded in traffic. Their refund policy does not cover service that was never delivered. I have filed complaints with Capital One, the CFPB, and the New York Attorney General's office. Avery Jones is truly a gem of a driving instructor! After a hiatus of 12 years since my driver's ed days, I found myself lacking confidence behind the wheel. Enter Avery, and everything changed. His approach is nothing short of transformative. One of Avery's standout qualities is his knack for turning complex driving maneuvers into simple, memorable acronyms. Take "ABC" for instance - "always be curious." It's not just a catchy phrase; it's a mindset that has kept me calm and focused on the road, preventing any nervous spirals. His mantra of "driving is science" serves as a constant reminder of the physics at play, especially regarding momentum, ensuring safe and efficient driving. In just two lessons, Avery worked his magic and demystified parallel parking and 3-point-turns for me. These were skills I struggled with for years, but under his guidance, they became second nature. Beyond his expertise, Avery is just a genuinely lovely person. His patience, encouragement, and positive demeanor create an environment where learning feels effortless and enjoyable. I am immensely grateful to have found Avery, and I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone in need of a skilled instructor who understands the needs of new or nervous drivers like myself. Thanks to Avery, I now feel confident and empowered behind the wheel. Additionally, Isaura is an exceptional instructor who made the 5-hour class a truly engaging and informative experience. Her interactive teaching style kept us all involved and focused throughout the session. Using a variety of tools, from diagrams to toy cars, videos, and photos, she brought every aspect of driving to life, making even the most complex topics easy to understand. Isaura's passion for teaching and her wealth of knowledge about all things driving-related shone through in every aspect of the class. Drive Rite Academy is as good as it gets. These guys are innovators; more driving schools can take a page out of their book. They have a prime location right by Atlantic Terminal so the commute there can be done from any part of Brooklyn. It was a bit difficult to get inside. On the intercom press the phonebook button and scroll down until you see Drive Rite then press call. Their office is stunning, looks very modern does not look like a classroom what so ever and it is right by the entrance. Christina is very accommodating and will address any of your questions professionally. I know because I asked quite a few. Sylvia was the instructor for my 5-hour prelicensing course and the time flew by. The room itself looked very classy and professional with super comfortable chairs. Sylvia had many funny stories to tell us of things that we should not do and how to be better drivers. She kept the entire class engaged, and honestly the class was fun (except for that one gory video). I was never felt pressured to share more than I wanted to and in the end everyone left the class in high spirits. Booking classes is easy since you can do it by yourself on their website, on the phone or in person. The prices are very generous and you get your money's worth (buy a package you save a bit of money). The cars are all brand new and clearly marked with very nice vinyl wraps. The cars are always clean and have no odors. Kevin and Monique are fantastic instructors. They made me feel safe, and relaxed behind the wheel. You can not go wrong with either instructor, just be sure to book in advance because Drive Rite is getting super popular. Thanks to them I passed my road test with flying colors. If I was allowed more stars I would give them to Drive Rite Academy. A brief run down of my encounters. I say encounter, because I spent more than 5 minutes with each of these people named, for different reasons; and each one of them deserve to be recognized for their contribution to my life at this Drive Rite Academy. My 1st encounter was with my Driving Instructor Sabrina....Job could have taken a lesson from her in patience. Many can benefit from her professional yet understanding demeanor. Not only did she assure me that I could do this, (63 and getting my 1st drivers license) but she helped bring my confidence level up to where I truly feel I can do this. I WANT to do this. My 2nd encounter was with Executive Assistant Geminesse....her reception to me was professional and direct, understanding my fears she addressed my issues (e-mail confirmation) resolved my issues, and then followed up with a polite email response. Great manners, fantastic presence, and a sense of humor that puts you at ease. Very easy to talk to. My 3rd and at this point most prolific encounter was with the 5hr. Certification Instructor Sylvia...This Instructor has a gift for teaching, and most appropriately belongs in the position she now holds. Thorough, empathetic, knowledgeable, and funny to boot. Very approachable, and has a knack of hearing what you want to say, giving her that edge to help you flesh it out. Sylvia, in my opinion is by far an asset, and a boon to all who she instructs. I passed the road test on February 14, all thanks to Drive Rite! Background: I have driven in the suburbs but never in city areas and haven't driven at all for the past 5 years. Details: I purchased the Silver Package which includes the 5 hour class, 6 45-minute lessons, and a car for the road test. After you take the 5 hour class, the school automatically signs you up for the road test. I took the class on Sunday January 7 and my road test was scheduled for Wednesday February 14, a little over 5 weeks out. You need to call or go on their website to book driving lessons (both very simple). An email is sent to confirm each booking and a reminder for each lesson is sent 24 hours prior which is very convenient. Detailed information for the road test is also sent via email. It was my first time taking the road test and I passed with zero points deducted. The People: Administration and instructors are extremely pleasant and knowledgeable. IN 8 WEEKS I WENT FROM ZERO DRIVING EXPERIENCE TO PASSING MY ROAD TEST ON THE FIRST TRY! I have experienced several instructors and Rebecca is by far the best. Rebecca has a calm, assertive energy that was a perfect fit for me. She also gave me the freedom to fail a bit in the beginning, which ultimately made me a more independent driver. Rebecca gives tough love when you need it and support when you are uneasy. I am in my 30s and seriously never thought I would have my license, but with Rebecca's instruction, I gained the confidence to get this done. My only source of practice was through my Drive Rite lessons, so I ordered the platinum package plus a couple of extra classes. From the first lesson, Rebecca sat me down and helped me develop a clear plan. With her help, we figured out which lessons worked best with my work schedule and how many lessons I should take each week. Having that structure made the impossible become tangible. Drive Rite as a company seems a bit disorganized, so be on top of them! Double and triple check who your classes are scheduled with and the details concerning your road test. There were times when I specifically requested one instructor, yet I was scheduled with another. I very clearly requested the Sea View location for my road test but was scheduled in Red hook. But overall, the driving instructors are what make the school, and this school is nothing without Rebecca! She is quite popular and hard to book but she is well worth the wait. read more

I highly recommend Drive Rite for anyone looking for a driving school. At the age of 29, I decided that it was definitely time for me to get my license. I searched around for schools near my job or near my house and the reviews at Drive Rite really stood out. I decided to take lessons at the newer location on Dean Street, since it was easy to get to from my job in Manhattan. I got the Gold Package, which included 10 lessons, 5 hour class, and the road test. Pretty much everything I needed to get my drivers license. My first lesson was with Jenny. She was thorough in explaining everything about the car and really made me feel comfortable as a beginner. My next couple of lessons were with Kevin. Really cool guy. He also made me feel super relaxed. It was almost as if I was driving with a really good friend. My last lesson was with Simon. He really prepped me for the road test and made sure I got all my skills down. After this lesson, I felt confident and calm about my upcoming test. I'm happy to say I passed my road test on June 1, and I couldn't have done it without Drive Rite. These guys really know their stuff. I had a positive experience with every staff member that I encountered, which is amazing. Also, shoutout to Christina at the office for always being so friendly and helping me out with scheduling. ***I passed in my first try!!!*** I promised Jay that I will write a review so I am writing :). I had everything (pre-licensing course, road lessons, road test) with Drive Rite Academy and I highly recommend this academy. I compared many academies in terms of prices, location, reviews and then chose Drive Rite Academy. For pre-licensing course, Dave is nice and well prepared for the course. The course can be very boring especially if it is long but Dave showed us many video examples and it really helped. For road lessons, I had Emmanuel, Jay, and JR. They are all good instructors. I read all the reviews and asked these people based on review and it was worth it. Emmanuel corrected me when I made mistakes and answered all my questions. For someone who just started to take the lessons, I strongly recommend Jay. He is always calm and relaxed so you can feel less nervous. For someone who is about to take a road test, I recommend JR. I met him a day before my road test and I had many questions about the road test site (Mine was at Red Hook) and he gave me clear answers which were very helpful for the test. I also requested a car for the road test and Kaleem drove me to the test site. He has very positive energy and that made me feel positive before the test. He also gave me the idea how the test will be and how it works. The test was exactly the same as he explained to me. Thanks to Drive Rite, I have a driver's license!! read more

As a native New Yorker, especially one who lives in Manhattan, I have never had a yearning to become a driver! Somehow being at Drive Rite Academy, working specifically with JAY, has changed my narrative towards driving 180 degrees. Geminesse, the first face of Drive Rite at Dean Street, is incredible. She works in the office and is insightful, patient and personable. It is evident that she takes her time and devotes all her attention to each client that walks in the office and/or calls. I choose the gold package which includes my 5-hour course, 10 driving lessons and a car for my road test that Geminesse requests from the DMV on my behalf. I randomly selected my driving instructor based on my availability and I have been BLESSED to work with JAY!!! Jay is in high-demand and I completely understand why. He uncovers the natural driver that is within all of us. He used my love for math to make sense of the rules and skills of driving. His calming aura, clear directions, and comical remarks make driving with him a wonderful experience. I am always so saddened when my lesson has come to an end. Once I take my road test, I plan to continue taking lessons with Jay to build confidence to be on the highway and enhance my skills behind the wheel. If you are a novice driver, like me or have intermediate skills and you would like to brush up on your driving, Drive Rite Academy is the place to be. read more

I can't speak highly enough about Drive Rite, and my experience with them. I got the Gold bundle (10 lessons, 5 hour class, and car for the test) and it was worth every penny -- I passed the road test on the first try. I recommend getting the 10 pack as a new driver, any fewer classes and I think I wouldn't have been ready. By time time my test date came around I felt confident and prepared, and that is 100% credit to their classes. All of their instructors are great, but I worked the most with Jay, and he was by far the best. He's patient, knowledgeable, specific and detailed in his instructions, good with giving constructive feedback, and fun too! I learned to parallel park perfectly with him. He makes learning feel much less scary, and driving with him helped me feel calm and confident behind the wheel, even when I wasn't in the car with him. It was such a positive, and even fun, experience. Request him! As a bonus to their great driving classes, the woman who works the front desk at the Dean Street location is efficient, helpful, and incredibly nice, and Dave, who taught the 5-hour class, made the time fly by. Their cars are clean and in good working order for the test. This business seems extremely well run, and I was happy to give my money to such a good company. I'll be taking more classes with them to learn highway driving, and I'd recommend them to anyone! read more

AVERY JONES at Drive Rite is a world class driving instructor. Before I worked with him exclusively, I was getting inconsistent feedback, and I failed my first test spectacularly. I was docked 65 points on my first road test in NYC. Then I decided to work with THE CHAMPION - AVERY JONES. His upbeat, methodical, super high energy style worked great for me. Avery is both meticulously detailed, while also super fun. You kind of know you're in the hands of a master, and I loved it. AVERY has so many catch phrases and memorable ways of putting things - "Driving is Science", "Momentum", "The ABCs of Driving (Always Be Curious)". Before you know it, you're internalizing all of this, and becoming a better driver. I passed my second road test, after working exclusively with AVERY. And let's be candid here, I passed NYC's hardest road test, BECAUSE OF AVERY. My exam was in Red Hook, which is the most notorious testing site. And I was tested by a SUPERVISOR, by a boss, and they are notorious for being even harder on students that the regular tough instructors. Well in spite of all of these obstacles, I still passed. And that was all because of AVERY. You know why? Because he's THE CHAMPION. AVERY JONES is hands down the best driving instructor in Brooklyn. read more

Wanted to write a review on my experience so far with Drive Rite. My 5-hr pre-licensing course with Sylvia was a while ago but it was great. I really enjoyed it because she included a lot of real life experiences that I thought were extremely helpful and she engaged with all of us. 5/5! My first lesson was with Jenny. I thought she had a lot of good pointers and she took me in early, but we spent 50 mins and only got to go around the block once. I know it's important to know the car and all the gears, etc. But even with a number of things I kept telling her I already knew, I felt like it was dragged on and it wasn't the best. She did teach me good turning tips and had me step on the gas continuously to practice getting the power gauge to 2. I just wish there was more actual driving and less talking. 3/5 My most recent lesson was with Jay. I had back to back lessons with him and he was incredible. I couldn't have had a happier experience. We drove a lot and he gave me amazing pointers on how to park. He made me feel at ease instantly. Jay is an awesome driver and I highly recommend him to anyone. I'm a very nervous driver and he was able to keep me calm and I feel with him I improved drastically. 5/5!!! read more

I am incredibly impressed and very grateful to drive rite. Their instructors are absolutely amazing. I started w not just zero knowledge but also incredibly high anxiety about driving. I was literally terrified of it and had quit classes elsewhere at least two times before. Their instructors were calm, friendly, reassuring, incredibly good at guiding and always had helpful ideas or were happy to show something in a different way. They were able to explain in depth not just what I needed to do but why and how it worked, how to think through the driving so I could not only repeat the tasks mechanically but adjust them to driving conditions. I took a bunch of lessons w what I think must be most of the instructors : Andre, David, Donald, Jenny, Jim, Kevin, Monique, Ronald, Rebecca. Each and every one was superb. I literally was impressed w each and every one. I'd especially recommend Jenny, Monique, Rebecca, Andre. They all not just know the job and how to teach, but are enthusiastic and put in genuine effort and care. I went from scared of driving to fairly calm and on a rare occasion enjoying it and I pretty much owe that confidence and command of the wheel to them. Highly recommend! read more

This is a great driving school. I went to the Dean Street location, and I can honestly say that I had professional interactions with EVERYONE there. Gem, who runs the office took the time to help me figure out the plan that worked best for me. Dave taught the 5 hr. class, and his good sense of humor prevented the class from being torture. I had 4 different instructors, Washington, Jay, Dane, and Ellen. The majority of my lessons were with Washington who was great at giving me the experience of driving on streets that were more challenging than the usual route, and helped build my confidence. Jay was extremely patient and calming when I became frustrated with myself and ultimatley helped me become comfortable with parallel parking. Dane and Ellen were both good at explaining what I needed to do, and how to avoid certain pitfalls. I was leary about having so many different instructors, but each one offered something different that was helpful. I'm an older driver, who had not been on the road in decades-literally, and they all were very encouraging, including Gem. You really can't go wrong with this school and the people who work there. read more

AVERY JONES makes the claim of being the best driving teacher in New York, but what can I say, he lives up to it. Avery has a very unique way of teaching and breaking down concepts he wants to teach. He distills ideas into their simplest form, and has the right Avery-ism for every situation. He really gets into the mindset of a student without the benefit of experience and looks at the learning process through this lens. This is something he's uniquely great at, and really drives the process of learning with him. Driving is a science, as he says. Avery is very encouraging of asking questions and really understanding the why of everything he teaches. He is very generous with his time and attention, and goes the extra effort for his students. It was hugely beneficial for me to start my driving journey with Avery - in a way I got lucky. I really got to learn the basics and then apply them in practice, and he always knew the right learning velocity. Had a great experience with this school, very highly recommended. I am travelling and needed my license before the end of the month, and now after I took my road test in Red Hook (and passed), I am waiting for my license to arrive in the mail and I couldn't be happier. I bought the rush bundle option, which lets you get your road test in three weeks or less. I got my test date in one week. Two classes are included in the rush bundle, and I used those classes to brush up on my parking because I have a non-U.S license, so I needed the recap. I tried both branches and worked with Peter at Dean Street and Andre at the Flatbush branch, and the owner Simon is a class act; he personally took the time to give me a few pointers before my road test, which I truly appreciate. The whole experience from start to finish was seamless - from the automated e-mails that reminded me about my lessons to the great service at both locations, in addition to accommodating my (admittedly) many needs, the staff at DriveRite has really gone above and beyond. Really difficult to find such service these days, and I'm glad I chose this school. read more
