I just finished up with my license renewal appointment. I arrived a few minutes early and I was out just a few minutes past my actual appointment time. Each employee I interacted with was friendly. I brought all required documents but didn't need to show any. I did update my changed address online prior to the appointment, so I think that helped speed things along. But this was the least stressful time at a DMV I've ever experienced. Now if only I liked my new picture better than my last LOL Maybe the color version will be better than the b&w temp paper copy. read more

Nothing says government inefficiencies like an elderly man getting to the DMV with all his paperwork complete, stands in line, gets to the counter and the employee asking "do you have an appointment?", his answer is no and she explains that he needs to go to a website to make an appointment. His eyeballs double in size as if he has no idea how to do that... they send him on his way. There are 16 visible employees, maybe half of them are actually helping someone, the other half are sitting there doing zero. Literally watching the clock. Like hand on face zoned into the wall, not even their computer... There are 4 people waiting in the chairs and another 5 on line. And this is why the people have no faith in government. Chick-fil-A could take over this and make it run like a well oiled machine. Their COVID measures would also be better. The line and chairs have to be six feet apart but if you are standing at a counter it's ok to be one foot away. Ya know, cause viruses only spread when you are in line or sitting. read more

Worst experience I've ever had. I walked in with everything I needed to get my license at 4:40. The people then yelled at me and told me they didn't take walk ins because they were closing in 20 minutes. Even though the website says they close at 5 and appointments are not needed. If I could give negative stars, I absolutely would. I would prefer the hours long wait in the waiting room over the several week wait for a new appointment if you happen to have the wrong type of appointment or the documents you bring are not up to their standards. The website contains all of the information one needs, I imagine. Who has the time to read every bit of the website and HOPE that you follow the correct links and that you are knowledgeable enough of the vocabulary to actually schedule the correct type of appointment AND have every document that you will need for said appointment? The first appointment, I did not understand what qualified as acceptable documentation, so was turned away. The soonest appointment was 6 weeks away. The second appointment, I brought a file box containing every document that I owned to be sure I had what I needed, only to be told that I had the wrong type of appointment scheduled, so turned away again, by a jerk who either didn't know, or wouldn't tell me the correct appointment type. I can wait another 6-8 weeks for the appointment I need, or I can drive two hours from home to the only other office in the entire state that has an availability sooner than 4 weeks. Normally I wouldn't mind the drive, but this is the third time I have lost wages and paid $5.00 per gallon gas for this appointment. I just called to speak to a live person and after sitting on hold for 40 minutes, was answered by yet another employee who couldn't possibly care less about my (or your) experience, and was told she can't even see the appointment that is booked, to confirm that it is the correct appointment type, because it is managed by a 3rd party. I can't imagine my parents or grandparents trying to navigate this system. They are lucky to turn on the computer and navigate to a legitimate webpage. They have spent a lifetime paying their taxes, and therefore their wages, only to be treated like dirt. read more

I never thought I would live to see the day that I would rate the DMV as: "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" Before my visit I thought that five-star ratings were to be reserved for restaurants wherein patrons are allowed to ignite their own baked alaska and public parks with spotless restrooms and swans, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of my visit to the Orem Drivers License Division. Here's the backstory: my drivers license expired on my birthday and through an unrelated sequence of events I was unable to renew it before that day. I remembered going to the DMV in high school and being encountered by a crowded, smelly, grey sardine can where they took a chubby-looking closed-eyes picture of me and slapped it on my drivers license, also making me wait a long time before giving me the runaround at the desk. This time I would do things differently, because it was my party and I would thrive if I wanted to. The night before my visit I prepared by checking this website (http://www.dmv.org/ut-utah/renew-license.php) and filling out the attached form. I brought all the information and documents they request with me, along with my printed-out info sheet. The next morning (a Wednesday) I arrived around 10:00 and found a normal-smelling, clean, quiet office. There was no line. The woman at the counter called me a doll (not true, but nice try--I am a human and dolls can't drive), but other than that she and everyone else knew what they were talking about and were very helpful. I only waited for about 10 minutes before my number was called and the person at the desk was personable. She wasn't a doll, either, and the great customer service I was a beneficiary of truly proves that real humans work at the DMV. After printing out my new temporary license (which had a better picture than before, I will have everyone know), the woman behind the counter gave me back my old license as a souvenir with two holes conveniently punched in it so that I can put it on a string of fruit loops or macaroni noodles and transform my old ID into a trendy statement piece of jewelry. I am really impressed with the Orem DMV. As a summary, here are some tips: -be prepared with all the documents that identify you as who you are -go in the morning -go on a weekday -don't call the people there dolls. All things considered with covid, they have done a good job with maintaining the number of people coming into the business. They have an employee out front ensuring that you have a booking number, which you must show the number to the person to check in. Make sure you print out the latest paperwork a day or two before. We had an older version and they've changed it twice since. They have floor markings to stand. The seats are spaced out so there's only room for 8 people to sit now. They have an employee cleaning the counter area right after each person. When you check in a second time, they again ask for the booking number to confirm. This process expedites everything. I would love to see the online scheduling option stay. There are walk ins but they go to the back of the line. It took less than 15, even after having to refill paperwork. read more

Oh man. Another high quality, surprisingly painless, totally great experience there. I had to renew my license, and I was in and out in less than ten minutes (without an appt). Everyone working there was perfectly pleasant. They didn't try to make me feel stupid or unprepared. They treated me like a person. There was no line. I didn't even get to sit down before my number was called. I didn't get to open the book I brought to read! I heard a mother say to her son after he left one of the service windows, "This is certainly not California." After my own two 3+-hr experiences at the DMVs in California, I can say--she's definitely right. In my experience, this place is way better. read more

There was one woman in front of me and the person checking her in was so dang rude to her and myself, and she had no reason to be then when my name got called I was told that, I was missing a document which was true, but she told me that I miss read the information online and I should actually read the list of things i need to bring next time. How freaking rude is that. Also, everything on mine says that this DMV is by appointment only but all the people coming in after me had no appointments as well as this lady said I can just pop in at any time with my documents and take my test that. This is genuinely the worst experience I've had at a DMV and I lived in Vegas where the DMV is full of 500 people at one time and the workers there are not as rude as these ladies I came across. The time to wait was expected (aprx. 4hrs) and the 1st person to help me was nice, but even after waiting that long to take the Learners Permit test a whole hour before closing (4pm) i was turned away from taking the test and told to come back tomorrow. not everybody has multiple days off in a row to just constantly show up to the DMV for fun. read more

Utah you make it really hard to get a license for out-of-staters. This is the third time I have been to the DMV in the last week trying to get a Utah drivers license, ineffectively. If you are an out-of-state resident, make sure you have two pieces of mail from your NEW address. Even if you have lived in Utah for a year prior to getting your license, they will still require mail from your most current place of residence. But they won't tell you that until you have waited in line for an hour. ALSO. If you had a Utah driver's license before, but have since gotten divorced, moved out of state, and moved back, they will require a certified, signed copy of your divorce decree from the courthouse. No matter how many years it has been and regardless if your birth certificate, passport, and current driver's license all have your maiden name. You will waste another few days trying to find documentation. Hopefully this helps someone else avoid my same fate: leaving the DMV licenseless. read more

So so sorry I didn't go ahead and drive to the Draper office. First the employees in Orem are curt to say the least. They must hate their boring jobs and take it out on the poor, innocent, unsuspecting potential drivers. The girl who took my picture wasn't paying attention to her job, I didn't even know she took it. She never showed it to me and when the second curt employee handed me my temporary license I could see that it had a mentally disturbed person on it... not me. Didn't look like me at all... at least I hope it didn't. Too late now. I give up my beautiful driver license pic that the previous girl took with care for this. Second, the eye exam machine was SO FILTHY I couldn't see a thing. He tells me about the disinfectant wipes AFTER I PRESS MY FACE onto the filthy machine. Don't do it.
