I'm seriously confused by what just happened here. After ordering a new license online but not having it arrive in time for a flight (where I also need to rent a car), I went to here to repay and have one printed in person. After being scolded by Sonnie for selecting the wrong driver's license button at the kiosk (and apologizing for it-I selected renewal which is what it's called online), she told me they'd have to order a new one, they could only mail it to me and there was nothing she could print at this location. She also told me that I better take my passport for the trip. I took another number at the kiosk, and after waiting a second time, a delightful guy was able to order a new one and get a temporary license printed. So I guess when your number is finally called, just hope it's not Sonnie because she may flat out lie to you... read more

I had to switch my out of state license to an in state license and thought I was going to be at the DMV all morning long. To my surprise... I signed in, within 5 minutes they had already called my number, they asked a few questions, you wait to take your picture and signature, and then you're done. My whole process from start to finish I would say was 25-30 minutes. I am impressed. I even brought my two year old and it went fast enough that he stayed occupied in his stroller the entire time. People at this location are friendly and very helpful, don't be afraid to ask questions! I definitely recommend this location! read more

To start- I want to say I am extremely mellow mannered and more often than not, go out of my way to be polite. I work close to this location and simply needed to transfer my out-of-state license to CO. The lady and security officer at the greeting/info desk were very kind, helpful and even compassionate. The info clerk checked that I had all my documents and even said, "I just feel so bad when I have to turn people away." A few minutes later a gal came in and told her she needed a new social security number, they went out of their way to explain the location and what she would need to have to get the new card. And then I got called to one of the clerks- Sunnie. I have never posted a negative review, but this woman was so incredibly unkind and clearly abusing the very little amount of power she has in her position. She was extremely unclear in her requests and instead of rephrasing, she would just repeat herself. As I handed her my documents, she said she could not accept the SSN card because it had tape it. I have used this same card, tape and all to get my passport and known traveler clearance from the US Federal Government. I explained that and asked her to reconsidered while holding the card in front of her. Then I made the mistake of accidently dropping the card on her keyboard- she accused me of throwing the card at her, said she had no obligation to assist me and that she could have me thrown out. Ummmmm what?!?!? I just stood there stunned. I grabbed my documents and said- "Can I have your name?" She replied- "Sunnie." She then said something of the effect that she could ensure that I wouldn't be allowed to receive service at this location. It was nothing short of appalling and quite shocking. I literally have never had anything even remotely close to this happen to me. As I walked out, I thanked the gal at the info counter and said I appreciated how kind and helpful she was. And I said it was too bad that the clerk was so incredibly and unforgivably rude. As I close the door the info desk gal and the security guard almost looked helpless, they shook their heads at each other as they whispered. I have a feeling this happens often. Here this woman has an opportunity to be welcoming to those new to her state, to be kind to those who need her help, to offer her expertise. She has a great job with the government with great benefits and she chooses to treat people with disdain. She is - to put it frankly - a vile human. I have actually read two other reviews on this platform specifically referring to this woman. How does she still have a job? No where else would this be tolerated. Shame on you CO DMV. read more

Every time I've gone here, the wait has been horrendous. They do driver's tests here, so there's a lot of people going in and out. Not only do you have to wait after you get your ticket, they try to line up the next 5 or 6 people to get to the desk. It's sad to watch little old ladies standing in that line for a while when it looks like they should be sitting to wait instead. It'd be nice if they could hire on more people to work all the desks they have available, but I'm sure with budget cuts, that's damn near impossible. read more

Pro: Fairly short wait time. Con: Information Desk woman is rude and doesn't actually give any information. There are no ATMs so bring cash or risk being at the Info Desk's mercy. The "Suggestion Card" provides a measly 2in x 2 in space to write complaints and offer suggestions. The rest of the card is filled with big bold font thanking you for your suggestion and Uncle Sam type graphics. A total waste of paper. Bitch-fest: I came here with all of my docs to change my name on my DL. I stopped at the info desk to make sure that I had everything. The woman was a bit rude but no problem for me. She said that I had everything required and I sat down and waited. Soon after, it was announced that their debit card machine was broken. I looked around and there were no ATMs in the building. That sure would've been a nice, considerate thing for Uncle Sam to do for its citizens. I asked the information desk woman where the nearest ATM was and she said that a school nearby has one but it's out of cash and that the school told her to stop sending people over there. Then she told me, "But there's also a bank a few doors down". Ok. Why not just tell people to go there? The bank's ATM was in a drive thru lane but I got the cash so whatever. While I walked over to the bank, my number was called. I previously had overheard this happen to a few others so I knew to check back with the info desk to get her to put my number back in the queue. Thank goodness for overhearing others or this woman would've wasted more of my time. She put my number back in and I sat and waited for a short time. After my number was called the clerk told me that I had to change my name with the social security administration office first. You would think that after all of the interactions that I had with the information desk woman, she could have given me that small, but important, little detail. At this point it was almost 4pm and the nearest Social Security Admin office was closed. What a complete waste of time. I highly recommend just driving to Boulder to get these types of things done. There is less wait time and more informative and helpful staffers in those offices. read more

Look I know it is the DMV, and they always suck... but I thought I had stumbled upon something golden here... the last 3x I am in and out in 20 min! So I take my lunch today thinking sweet... yeah no. Only 2 people were working the counters (slower than all get out), the counters were actually all empty for 5 min as they went and did who knows what, the line time... 11:15pm to 2:32pm NO WHERE near acceptable... now granted I work right around the corner so I went back to work when I got my ticket... but thinking they were moving at a rate of 10 people per 30 min I still ended up sitting on my butt there for 1.5 hrs. Granted I made a friend with a little boy so we played peek-a-boo for a good 30... but still... boooo! read more

This is the worst DMV I have had the displeasure of ever being in. These people look for reasons not to be able to help. The two people that went beyond their call of duty to make sure the people that are paying the their salary leave without getting what they need deserve to go work at a real job where they need to care. Would not last a minute. My advice...go to another office. Twice I could not get what I needed done at this office and went to other office with the exact same paper work and walked out with a smile on my face. It's the DMV... Pretty much as expected. Clerks are semi rude to everyone. I went early at opening time got my license replaced in 30 minutes. Take 2 forms of proof of residence and bring cash. The credit card machine was down and so was the ATM 2 doors down at the driving school. read more

The manager made the girl in front of me cry for no reason because he said she wasn't talking "calmly" enough, then he told me the same thing and threatened to call the cops on me. I came to this location to replace my driver's license and it was pretty simple. I believe it took me about an hour. All in all, a typical DMV experience. Just come prepared and you'll be fine. The clerk that helped me was very kind and efficient. There were two children, both under the age of 5, who were squeaking and crawling about around their dad's legs while dad was having a conversation with another adult. Everyone once in a while one of them would let out a shriek or maybe yell, "daddy!" It didn't seem to be bothering anyone but all of a sudden, a woman behind the counter YELLS at them. "IF YOU AREN'T ABLE TO CONTROL YOUR CHILDREN WE WILL HAVE TO ASK THEM TO WAIT OUTSIDE. THERE ARE CUSTOMERS TESTING." lulz yeah, okay lady. The dad looked at her politely and nodded, he was obviously very patient and mild mannered. They made a couple other comments out loud and were just being jerks about these poor kids and this poor dad who didn't have any help. I just don't get it. If they're running around unattended and screaming at the top of their lungs, then yes, I understand coming out from behind your shelter of a counter and politely reminding the parent that they might be disturbing customers. But to yell and call out and embarrass someone who obviously doesn't mean you any harm... what's your problem? Chill out. Oh, also, the "manager" who was also behind the counter yelled at a completely different man (whom I guess had a bad experience earlier?) as he was leaving the building. And then ANOTHER employee, a young woman, yells, 'DON'T COME BACK HERE." lol WHAT is going on. I can't believe I'm giving 5 stars to the DMV, but they earned every one. Went there on the last Friday before Christmas expecting to spend most of the day there, got my ticket and started waiting. I was pretty amazed when I was next in line within 40 minutes. Then something happened that completely blew me away. One of the DMV folks came out and told us that they "were getting concerned" because their computers were saying some people had "been waiting for an hour," that their ticketing system was not getting it done properly so they were going to line us up First-in-first-out order and knock it out. This fine bureaucratic specimen then proceeded to tell everyone what were acceptable documents to prove residency, and capped it off by saying, "if you don't have your required documents in order, just leave now and stop wasting your time, our time, and your fellow patron's time." ! Wow! Everyone was pleasant and professional. Nobody left to take their break in the middle of serving someone. They *came out from behind the counter* occasionally and answered questions before people got to the front to waste time because they didn't have their act together. And knock it out they did. Their totally fair reshuffle only cost me another 25 minutes or so. Within that 25 minutes, everyone who was there when I got there was gone. These fine folks beat every DMV I've ever dealt with anywhere in the world, by several laps. Bravo! read more

The wait was an hour long and as I come up to the desk I am informed that I don't have the right documenation. Greaaaaaat. But to my surprise, the lady at the desk said if I come back within an hour I can come right up to her. Ok, easy enough! Needless to say, I got my ID transferred that day. I would prefer negative stars if it was possible. I will start by saying that the DMV gets a bad rap to start with so expectations were low to start, but these employees performed as if they were going for the gold medal of terrible! My daughter has made her driver's license appt over 2 months in advance due to the covid backlog so to say we had prepared our documents carefully is an understatement. When we arrived, the employee that greeted us at the door was gruff and rude right out of the gates. We put up with the attitude because we had to. When we got inside and were shown to the individual that would "help" us, more attitude and he acted as if he had no idea why we were there (even after we provided all the details at the door and it was clear they could see it on the computer). I will spare the details of the wrong signature we had on the driving record (mine instead of my husband's) but it was a deal breaker and there was 0 attempt to help us get it corrected, just complete rudeness, lack of any compassion and a "you'll have to leave and make another appointment. (Btw the first available was now early March). The supervisor there was also less than helpful and equally rude. A really nice woman in line offered us her spot because now my husband had arrived and could resign the document, but we were abruptly told that was not allowed since she had signed up for it and not us. It gave the door employee great pleasure as well to insert his weird authority. As a last point, my very upset daughter went back online immediately to try and find another appt while we were there, only to find she couldn't book one because the system said she had one already (btw at this point, nearest available DMVs taking appts before end of February were in Montrose and Craig). I ran back over to ask door employee what to do since she couldn't book and he said, "oh you just have to trick the system and change your name a bit" hmmmmm just saying, rather than have us falsify info, maybe you could have just easily gotten it done the right way now. In closing, I would recommend steering clear of this place unless entitled government employees that can't get a job anywhere else are your jam. Craig CO DMV as a contrast was awesome. read more

People at this DMV are REALLY REALLY REALLY rude, and have no education. I called to explain my situation. I'll just explain below if you have sometimes to understand how incompetent people are over there. I booked an appointment for a drive test on Sept 18th at 8:15am. I had the paperwork I needed to do it, and came with a car and the owner of course. When it's my turn, I'm going to the office and the person there ask me for some documents. Then I explain my situation. I will be here for a year as a trainee with a VISA J-1, and need a drivers licence. The guy starts to explain me (as if he is bored with people with wrong informations) that I don't need to pass any test in here, I just have to transfer my drivers licence in Colorado. From there, I tell him that this is not what the website explained. He tells me, annoyed "Yes this is what the website explain, you might have read something in the wrong website". So I asked him what document I will need to bring at my next appointment to do a transfer. He tells me the i94 document. I didn't know what it was, and he was incapable to explain either. Today, because I could get a day off on Wednesday October 1st, I am getting ready and I am calling the Lakewood DMV office (NICE PEOPLE BY THE WAY, THANKS GOD STUPID PEOPLE AREN'T SPREAD ALL OVER THE WORLD) and the people over there explained me really nicely that with my status which is VISA J-1 I need to pass a drive test and written test. It would be stupid to transfer my drivers licence, since I am not a resident. I am here only for a year, and I am going to lose my drivers licence from France. Unfortunately I am looking online for the appointment, and as usual for the next available appointment I would have to wait 1 month and 5 days. I decide to call the Golden DMV, I explained what happened to a ill-mannered guy "DON" and he put me on hold whereas I was still talking. Then he took back the call and started to say : "This is what's happening, either you pass the test, either you transfer your licence" Then I reply nicely " I already picked what I am going to do because Lakewood DMV explained it to me. I just need to know if I can get an appointment earlier, because mine was wasted because of one of your employee who gave me the wrong information". Then he put me on hold forever. She told us to bring anything with my SSN number on it, did the next day and then told us it would not work and to go to the social security office. The social security office was already closed when she told us this. Drove all the way there for nothing and will have to go back for the third day. Okay, yes, these are governmental offices and you would expect them to be penalizing. There was a woman who was a facilitator to help things from getting confused. Of course, there is still a usual 60 minute wait as you would expect from any of these places. I have never seen people haul to get things done quickly as you would expect in say - the line of Costco. No way. They still take lunch at noon, leaving some spots empty, so if you want to go there at lunchtime, it will certainly be a longer wait. Hopefully you will not have to go back. Check the website, check your documents BEFORE you go, and save yourself another trip. They are doing their best, they are pleasant there. I would go back here over some of the others around Denver. Parking is sparse. Be prepared to look for a while to find a spot. read more

A security guard greets you right when you walk in the door and makes sure you have all the appropriate documents for what you need, before you even get started. You sign in at a simple kiosk. I was only changing my name and address on my license, but I was only in there for about 15 min before getting called. Then only had to wait a short time to get my picture taken. Everyone was friendly, especially Angel, who helped me at the desk. I've never had a good experience at the DMV before, so this was a nice surprise! I understand DMV employees deal with a lot of angry customers but I'm not an angry person and was treated with a lot of unnecessary attitude. I handed my billing-proof of residence to her and she snapped at me saying "I'll tell you when I need something" and shook her head. My proof of residence was a bill from my landlord. My second piece of proof was a certified marriage certificate but since it had my husbands name in it she wouldn't accept it. Although this is frustrating, it could have been less of an ordeal if I was treated with less attitude. The wait time wasn't horrendous so that's the only reason I gave this rating any stars. read more

This place does what it can, with what it has, the best they can. End of story. And they do better at that than anyone here gives then credit for. In my short time here I saw most of the general populace present that day act like absolute children. The general sense of entitlement in 2015 is sad. Their end of state gov doesn't get anywhere near the budget it needs to even self-sustain (let alone the millions and millions that all these other reviews seem to think is being paid to the employees), not to mention the well publicized cutbacks in employment. DUH. Obviously that leads to a few things if you just put the pieces together. I get that there is a wait, but I promise you, there are options to alleviate that if you SEEK THEM OUT. It's the freaking drivers license office, all 5 million people in this state above 16 years old need to visit one at some point or another, of course there is a bit of a wait. How does that not equate to people? Oh you Don't like it? Move to Alaska! I promise you, you'll be in and out. First off, don't go on a Monday or Friday! Come on people, it's not rocket science!!! How many people, just like you, said to themselves "I'll just pop in first thing Monday morning and breeze through" or "I'll just swing by half-hour before they close on a Friday (or any day) right after I leave work, surely no one else could possibly have thought of that too." Wait for a better time, or think ahead and make the appointment. If you didn't plan ahead, then plan to wait with everyone else who doesn't think ahead also! How childish is it to complain when people come in to honor their appointment they made weeks prior and you feel the need to stand and ask out loud "why do they get to go ahead of me!" Because they thought ahead, which was too much thinking for everyone else leaving reviews evidently. Does that need drawn out in crayon for most people nowadays!? I made an appointment (because I'm not an idiot), waited the month until it came (yes it took a little time) but on that day, I was in and out in 15 minutes. I researched the website ahead, as all logic would suggest. Low and behold, ALL THE INFO YOU NEED IS ON THE SITE! IT'S ALMOST LIKE SOMEONE DID THAT ON PURPOSE! BAM, proof of address required in two forms, right there in plain English. How hard is that? You all have mail, bills, info on your smartphones proving where you live. And if you don't have one single piece, as about 90% of people I watched in my short time waiting claimed, then you have much bigger issues than getting a license my friend. It really isn't cause for the violent and childish outbursts I watched 3 different "adults" display over the matter. All of which at one point yelled "how am I suppose to know that!" How does anyone know anything, dummies!? They seek the information beforehand! Since when has throwing a fit like a baby ever alleviated your need to be a responsible adult? Oh yeah, not since you were... a baby! Alright, the big one. I get that the people there are unfriendly. After watching, I would be too. Anyone with half a brain and ten minutes to simply look (aka, me) could see those people are angry IN DEFENSE. Probably 9/10 people I watched interact with a clerk there, above mentioned individuals included, had the absolute worst attitude for no reason other than "they didn't want to be here wasting their precious time" and they want everyone to suffer too. I would be a bitter person too if that's the majority of people I had to help day in and day out. Kind of makes you lose your faith in humanity if everything is cause for a temper-tantrum. Best part about that is, I treated the clerk with standard human decency, and he was quick to show me the same. The Golden Rule, what a freakin concept. He even thanked me at the end for being kind, as I did him. If this place is so hectic it's abnormal for someone to be kind to them, to a point where it requires mentioning, then people really are doomed. Moral of the story: use your head, life won't hurt so much. This place is what you make it, go in with a crappy attitude, ill-prepared, and ready to cause a scene, then don't expect to get exactly what you want. It really isn't that hard. read more

Placed is stuffed with don't wanna be here employees. Let's start with the older gal at the front, who (after me surreptitiously watching her off to the side for a bit) loves to make rude comments to someone walking in the door. Then, she snickers and shares the dimwitted comments of the people who just asked her a question (like, "where do I go from here?") with the $8.00 per hour "security" punk sitting at the desk next to her. Great fun indeed. And, as usual, the place has no signs of any reliable information anywhere. My experience -- I'm wanting to renew my HAZAT CERTIFICATION on my license, which has expired after 4 years. Any notice from the state on pending expiration? Hah! (And, it expires on a different day than your license does, but just for fun, is not noted anywhere). Fat boy in the far corner takes my info, my credit card, points in the general direction of the front door, and says you need to "go to number one". His exact words. Well, the L shaped counter has 9 slots for employees, numbered from 9 to 2. Where is number one? Rude older lady snickers when I ask her, and she points to one of six computers, which are indeed numbered, generally back in the direction I came from. Numbers one through three are on computers against the wall, which you wouldn't know if you hadn't noted that fact when you walked past them to get to the counter. Little numbers on the top of the monitors, facing the wall. Nice, very nice. So, I take the test. Oops, got one too many wrong. At the end of the test, the computer tells me to return to the counter. Back to rude fat boy, at the counter. Some free advice here: son, keep working here until you die; no company in the world will hire a jerk like you. Fat boy admonishes me and says you need to be in the "renewal line." Sign for that? Ha. Go stand in that line. The line 6 feet to your left. Does he point that out. C'mon now! Fairly nice lady takes my money, I take the test again. Aced it, so now I go back to the lady and she, nicely enough, tells me I need to get my picture taken. Then, as it so happens, nature calls, and I politely ask the same old rude bat at the front door where the restrooms are -- no sign naturally. She points me to a corner, bothersome question that it was, and says you need to take a key. This is the best part of the entire story. You must read this! There are two bathrooms, adjacent to each other. Both are unisex -- either gender can use them. You need a key which is on a huge red plastic thingy. The key fits EITHER DOOR. So, you put the key in one, turn it, and OOPS, someone is using it. A Male. Sorry. Whatever, I back out and put the key in the other lock for the other bathroom. Female this time. OOOPS again. Apparently, you are supposed to knock first, and then once you get in, turn the lock on the handle. Sign for that important info? Guess again! Then, WHY THE HELL DO YOU NEED A KEY? Keep out the derelicts? Ain't no derelicts in this DMV, you gotta have a car to get anywhere near the place. Sadly, this commentary is a waste of time, and I mean total complete. But, if you haven't had enough abuse, and you want even more crap - can service way worse than this, head over to 20th and Pierce. The help at the front desk doesn't want to be there, and they don't even bother to pretend. Certainly don't want YOU there, and neither do their supervisors. Even the guy behind the bulletproof glass taking your money is a turd. You can easily get 3 different answers to the same question (I'll wager their training sessions are absolutely unbelievable. Assuming they train, of course). Once upon a time, you walked in and pressed a button on a computer, then got a number, and waited for a clerk. No more, bucko. Stand in a windy line, ask the rude clerk, she gives you a number, then wait some more. Monday morning? 50 people waiting, a line out the door to even get a number. I wanted to see which was the worst DMV, because this was getting kind of fun in a sick way, so I headed over to the Athmar branch, on Mississippi, in the Denver ghetto. That used to be fun. 100 people inside, dirty, loud,take you two hours to get an address change. Surrounded by all these crap-can little businesses which "supply" a driving test for you. Colorado government "outsourcing" to private individuals. Free no longer! Alas. Athmar is now closed. Gone away. Poof. No sign on the door saying where they went, options, etc. Good old Colorado government. Nothing has changed. Nothing ever will. Want that pothole filled? That manhole raised so it doesn't rip the shocks off your car? Ha! You want a decent road -- head to Kansas or Wyoming. Not perfect, just decent. And by the way, apparently it is illegal to stripe I-70 from Idaho Springs to the bottom of Vail pass. Try driving that at night. Where does the road start and end? Who knows? Who cares? I went in to renew my license, and had braced myself for the usual experience. I was SEVEN MINUTES!! Seven! I took my number, sat down, put away my sunglasses and they called my number. The people helping were very friendly today. The two stars is for the ridiculous line system. They do not use the automated system, instead they place you in a line and make you stand. Silly with all those empty chairs and the automated number system. read more

If you're planning on changing your name, beware that the documents required on the official DMV website are not the same documents they actually require. After waiting outside for 45 minutes for the office to open, I was rudely told that I needed to wait for my new social security card - directly contradicting the information on their website. I even showed them where their website said a letter from social security saying you had a applied for a new card would be sufficient, but no dice. They wouldn't let me talk to anyone but the people at the front about it, even to suggest that they put the correct information on the website. I was just told that they just changed the rules yesterday. I've never managed to get anything done at this DMV and I'll be going elsewhere when my card does come. It's not just that it's the DMV, this location is a special kind of terrible. read more

Yesterday I needed to renew my expired drivers license. I had planned to spend 3-4 hours at the dmv. When I walked in the place was packed! The lady greeting at the door was very friendly and told me which line to be in. I was second in line! The first part of the process you verify your information and take a vision test. I waited for my turn for 5 minutes and the process took 5 minutes. I was then told to wait until my name was called to have my picture taken. I waited for 5 minutes until my name was called. The ladies taking my picture were very nice and even joking with me! After my picture they gave me a temporary paper license and told my license would arrive in 30 days. Went there to renew my CDL and the computers were down, said they couldn't renew CDLs at that time so I asked for a manager. He told the girl they could give me an extension then another person that was "in charge" came out asked what was going on and told the girl they couldn't do CDLs, so I called the guy back over and explained to him what was going on and by this point there was no professionalism at all but in the end they could give me an extension.
